Product Description
Every year, thousands of women and hundreds of males are diagnosed with Bulimia nervosa - an eating disorder and psychological condition caused by binge eating and purging what has been eaten. Emotional havoc ensues - guilt, depression and self-condemnation followed by physical problems - malnutrition, dehydration, organ damage and teeth erosion from the stomach acids used in purging. Dr. Brian McKay sees the obvious oral symptoms of bulimia nearly every day in his Seattle and Southern California dental practices. The frequency of these patients inspired McKay to write this book about the diagnosis, treatment and recovery from bulimia from a very unique perspective: The dental chair. With over 25 years of experience as a dentist, Dr. McKay learned the sad facts: 26% of all bulimia is first diagnosed by a dentist. In this landmark book - the first of its kind - he sounds the clarion call for a united effort between two professions -the Eating Disorder Treatment professionals and the Dental world to join forces and treat this debilitating disease and create a safety net for its victims. Discover the facts. Learn to take action. Find out how to care for bulimics everywhere in a caring, nonjudgmental, revolutionary approach. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Me
The book started out funny and interesting about her life and personality. However, toward the middle I realised this book wasn't helping me cope with my issue at all.I was basically just reading about her life and trials with binge eating. The book drags on and she pushes A LOT of holistic healing approaches that I don't believe to be beneficial for actual chemical disorders. It can be an entertaining read but it is not going to help anyone get over binging or even cope with it.I guess reading the book could be a distraction technique??

1-0 out of 5 stars I expected more
I was very disappointed in this book.If an alternative means trying every ridiculous thing that comes your way, then read it.Perhaps we are all spending too much time focused on ourselves in this culture. Evidently after a long journey with many twists and turns Lori feels healed.Age and experience were most likely the real solutions here.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not convinced
I've seen videos of Lori Hanson speaking and have been rather satisfied with what I've heard. However, the writing style of the book is somewhat irritating. It's full of exclamations that really lower the tone of the book and sound very immature. In videos she speaks with an eloquence that is seriously lacking in her writing. I actually questioned her level of intelligence, because the writing was so bad (before seeing the videos). Furthermore, while the author's story resonates with (probably)most of us who suffer with these issues, I feel (perhaps selfishly?) that addressing the behavior of a non-purging bulimic differs significantly from that of one who does purge. Moreover, I was honestly not convinced that the author is truly recovered, not in a way that I would find inspiring. I realize that I don't see her dealing with everyday life, but the way she presents photos of herself and describes her weight and appearance does not reflect the insight of someone who has successfully moved beyond a disordered mindset. She seems to enjoy relating numbers from the scale when they're low and makes statements like "I was probably 125 here- ugh!" when they creep up. It makes it very difficult to take her seriously. What person who is trying to recover and think positively of herself is going to find an inspirational voice from someone who is 'recovered' and still has such negative things to say about herself?

4-0 out of 5 stars You Can Do This!
"It Started with Pop-Tarts" is the first hand account of author Lori Hansen's life with bulimia. Most of the book is spent on her history, the triggers and life that made her vulnerable. Her battle is not just with food, but with alcohol as well. It takes her years to triumph. She explored many healing venues.

One very powerful healing tool is to know that you are not alone in your struggles. There are others who came before you, reaching out their hands to help you on your way. Lori is honest about her pain and her mistakes. Sometimes people look at those who are succeeding and think it was always like that, but it's also so important to know that others struggle, fall, and then get up again. I believe that this book could help someone in just that position--someone who feels down and needs the strength to try and get up. Life has a way of challenging us over and over again and we need to have the strength to get up--over and over again. This is what Lori Hansen's story demonstrates. Going for success, missing the mark, getting up, and into success.

This book shares an alternative approach that uses a wide variety of resources. She shares it all. She holds nothing back. She tells every book that guided her and every practitioner that helped her. This book will help people struggling quietly in their pain to understand that there is hope, there is a next step, and that it takes what ever it takes. Kudos to Ms Hansen for having the courage to tell her story so it will help others heal.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good read but not helpful for bulimics
I found the story in this book interesting.Lori's life was an interesting read and it kept me reading on.I did not find it helpful however for helping me with advice on eating disorders. Her eating disorder was more of a binge eating disorder. Alot of people consider bulimia a binge/purge disorder.I therefore could not totally relate to this book.I wouldn't recommend it to people who are suffering from bulima.I read "Learning to be me" and I found it alot more insightful and alot more relatable.

Product Description
Eating disorders are but one of many specific pathological responses to the pressures of the modern world. In group therapy, patients battling bulimia nervosa can learn from one another how to heal the emotional wounds that have put their health in jeopardy. Group therapy addresses the four etiologies of eating disorders by teaching the sociocultural context, discussing both the psychological and familial constellation of each member, and providing a forum to address the physiological aspects of the disorder by discussing the benefits of or disappointments in medications. The only eating-disorder treatment manual for group application available, this book presents an integrative treatment model bringing together psychoeducational, cognitive behavioral, relational, experiential, and interpersonal methods. The introduction begins with a detailed discussion of bulimia's cultural roots as well as its epidemiology and etiology, moves to a survey of available treatments, and concludes with a rationale for use of the integrative group method.Following chapters provide instructions for leading a time-limited therapy group for bulimic patients, including a discussion of screening procedures for prospective members and a guide for processing group dynamics. These precede the core of the book: step-by-step descriptions of the twelve structured therapy sessions. Interspersed throughout are group reading assignments and reflective essays. ... Read more

Product Description
The publication 4 years ago of Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e), written by two eating disorder specialists at London's world-famous Maudsley Hospital, was a milestone in the treatment of bulimia. For the first time a self-help book was shown, by rigorous clinical trials, to cure a significant fraction of women suffering from bulimia, and to reduce the therapist contact time needed by others.Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e)offered an efficient way of treating bulimic patients, which would be valued by any resource-conscious health service.

The authors of Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e) have now written this Clinician's Guide, to help health care professionals maximize the benefit that patients obtain from the self-help book. Based on the authors' wide-ranging experience of treating eating disorder patients, it provides a step-by-step account of how the chapters inGetting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e) can be used to ameliorate various aspects of bulimics' difficulties, with examples drawn from real patients' case histories. Particular emphasis is given to the problem of motivating patients who are reluctant to change their behavior, using Miller and Rollnick's motivational interviewing approach.

The Clinician's Guide to Getting Better Bit(e) by Bit(e) will be invaluable for all those treating sufferers of bulimia. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An integrative approach for the treatment of BN
In coping strategies therapy (CST) for bulimia nervosa, the author brings together a range of models and theoretical assumptions (transtheoretical model, dose-effect theory and coping theory) that result in an interesting framework with the ambition of integrating these different strategies and approaches into a broad and effective treatment. The empirical evidence for these models and theories, as well as their application to BN is described in chapter one.The book is organized into two parts. In part one (comprising 3 chapters), the framework for CST is presented. Part two is devoted to the description of four doses of treatment (chapter 4-7) and some conclusions (chapter 8).By using the transtheoretical model, the intervention might be matched to an individual's readiness to change. This would reduce resistance, stress and time to implement a change by accelerating movement toward the action stage. As described in chapter 2, CST involves a range of therapeutic activities including education, self-management, problem solving, cognitive restructuring, or brief interpersonally and affectively charged interventions. Dose-effect theory where dosage reflects both the concentration and duration of treatment has been used to create a theoretical structure for organizing diverse approaches to treatment. There are four doses of therapy in CST: A 2-session dose, an 8-session dose, a 20-session dose and a dose of 50-100 or more sessions. The author suggests that the coping theory links dimensions of coping in a cohesive framework that is consistent with current models of psychotherapy for BN. Problem solving and cognitive restructuring reflects cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), social support and expressing emotions reflects Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and brief psychodynamic therapy and the disengagement factors reflect dialectic behavior therapy (DBT), trauma therapy and expressive psychotherapy. In chapter 3, a multifactorial model for assessing individual differences among patients with BN is presented by using a combination of factor analytically derived constructs and transtheoretical model with an interpersonal model of development and trauma, based on object relation theory. The author provides very helpful guidelines from his clinical practice, and the result is an unusual mix of empirical findings and clinical theory. The four doses of therapy are described in chapter 4-7. The initial evaluation for all doses is described in chapter 4. Dose 1 is the smallest dose of the CST lasting 1-2 visits. The instillation of hope is the core clinical intervention in dose 1. The core strategies are the most basic of the active behavioral processes and the problem engagement dimension of coping. They include self-monitoring of eating pattern and symptoms and meal stabilization. Patients who are in preparation phase (according to transtheoretical model) with sufficient motivation for behavior change are candidates for dose 2 of CST. Dose 2 (3-8 sessions) is most likely to be successful with patients who have little or no comorbidity or have a relatively circumscribed comrobid condition. The core strategies in dose 2 are reinforcement management, self-monitoring, helping relationship, stabilizing meal patterns, examining eating records, promoting coping skills, counterconditioning, and stimulus control. Dose 3 involves use of experiential processes and emotion-focused coping for patients who are not yet ready to engage in active behavior change. The author suggests that dose 3 strategies are most consistent with experiential and interpersonal forms of therapy (e.g., IPT, supportive-expressive therapy, time limited psychodynamic therapy and client-centered therapy). Dose 3 patients are likely to be in contemplation stage and to require enhancement in their motivation for behavior change before taking action.Dose 4 treatment involves efforts by the therapist to reduce disengaged coping for patients who are not yet ready to engage in positive change processes and engaged coping efforts. Treatments for disengagement include expressive psychotherapy, treatment for dissociative disorders, trauma therapy, and cognitive therapy for patients with personality disorders as well as DBT, of which only DBT is empirically supported. Candidates for dose 4 are likely to be in precontemplation stage and those with serious comorbidity or/and very high/low Body Mass Index (BMI). In CST, different symptoms are targeted with different amounts of therapy and the techniques of therapy are affected by dosage of therapy. The author suggests that the analysis of transference and countertransference can be extremely useful at any dose of therapy if the situation is appropriate, but it is emphasized as most crucial for stage 4 treatment. An important limitation in justifying the theoretical framework of CST is that CBT is restricted to manual-based versions of this treatment, and the powerful utility of the functional analysis that is the fundamental basis for adapting the treatment for the individual patient in clinical practice has been ignored. Since all doses of treatment might be covered by various forms of CBT and DBT, the behaviorally oriented reader might ask himself/herself what is the point of using psychodynamic concepts (e.g., transference) in the approach. Nevertheless, the present book makes a significant contribution by showing the possibility of integrating several empirical models from both a theoretical, empirical and pragmatic point of view. It is a thought-provoking work that gives rise to many interesting hypotheses and hopefully some empirical research. I would like to recommend this book to all clinicians and researchers working with patients with eating disorders. ... Read more

I’ve studied more or less every course on writing in the nearly twenty years that I’ve been educated, so I’d like to think I’ve learnt a bit on the subject. I’ve a passion for culture and hope to one day work as a professional language translator. What inspired me to finally pursue publication of Cinderella in the Attic was to not only give myself a voice but also to advocate for everyone who suffers from an eating disorder, depression, or anything that’s not letting his or her life be the most rewarding it can be. I suffered with bulimia and depression for most of my life completely in silence; it is with this book that I hope to encourage everyone out there who’s enduring a secret war alone to get the help they need. This book to me is not only about the illness I’ve faced but also in a way demonstrates just how inattentive we can be toward those around us when we get too caught up in the daily grind. In fact, it’s only now that what I’ve been going through all this time has come to light. It’s so important to love one another every day and pay attention to even the most minuscule details. It may save someone’s life. —P.H., 2006 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly honest!
I read this book without any expectancies whatsoever, and found it to be refreshingly honest! While the writer's uninhibited style may shock, her lifestory is inspiring and heart warming. It was written as is, with no artificial ingredients. A must read for anyone who is interested in human beings and human feelings.

1-0 out of 5 stars Severely Disappointing
An avid reader of books of all types, including ones such as this, I was originally thrilled to come across this book. But once I picked it up, I had to force myself to the very end, which is not usually the case.In a word, awful; and I hope that it may have been due to translation.Where was the editor?Choppy and simple, it is not worth picking up because there are so many other more poignant novels of the same genre out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst I've read
I've read a lot of books on eating disorders and this one is by far the worst one I've read.I'm assuming English is not the author's first language because a lot of the book didn't seem to make sense.I was really excited to read this book, since I struggle with bulimia and depression, but I was really disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars It touched my soul
There are so many self-help books, this is one with a big difference: it will touch your soul. By baring her own struggles, Veliz shows us all how to cope with our own shortcomings and how to be true to one's self and listen to our own inner voice. It is only then that we can celebrate our own special talents. Her journeys and triumphs make for fascinating reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.
I got this book because I struggle with bulimia myself but found it to be more about her relationships with her family, her son, and her ex-husband than about her relationship with her bulimia. The writing style was hard to follow and confusing, which made the plot hard to follow as well and dissapointing. While it is a story of strength and courage, it isn't as focused on bulimia as it leads itself to be. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars TRIGGERING
Please do not read this book if you are in the midst or in recovery from an ED. The author's journey through her ED describes habits and tricks that will be triggering to you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking but true
One of the few things I've come across about anorexia which blows the myths to pieces. Chris was not "the good child" nor was she a "perfectionist," nor did she have a lot of the attrbutes often pinned on people with eating disorders.

She describes frankly the hellish journey from anorexia through to bulimia nervosa, in calm monotone, with no miracles or drama- this wasn't glamourised.

What struck me about this particular autobiography was that she wasn't dramatising her situation, nor was she asking for pity or admiration. She was just telling it like it is, intelligently, honestly, and in a sense that would make people without eating disorders possibly understand a little more as to why people do this to themselves.

A must have on the bookshelf for any counsellor, family member, parent or friend who wants to try and help or understand someone with either anorexia or bulimia.

2-0 out of 5 stars lacking
I have both me Leah and read her book.I met her on two occasions at conferences I attended.I also read her book. The book does look into the horrors that I know are part of the struggle with the 'demon'.However, I question the sincerity in the author.Due to the reception I received from her at both encounters, I question the sincerity of her attempts and wonder if it isn't all a grasp at further fame.

5-0 out of 5 stars An honest reflection from a wonderful person
Leah Hulan was my roommate at the 1994 Miss USA Pageant in South Padre, Texas (I was Miss North Dakota). The reflection and insight this book relects is real.Leah truly is a person we would all like to be like... and for her to have the courage and strength to share her story is a gift to the rest of us. The book is wonderfully written. This book would be helpful to anyone struggling with their own disease or for those knowing those who are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leah Hulan attacks the subject of eating disorders
I think this book is an excellent detail of how society puts pressures on young women to be beautiful and femimine, no matter how hurt and mistreated you are on the inside. Love yourselves, Eleni

4-0 out of 5 stars This book tells of a horrifying disease in which many suffer
As I read this book I remembered my aspects of my own eating disorder. I felt as though demons had taken over my body and I had to fight them off. There were days that I was as normal as the next person, but then therewere days that I could not remember even waking in the morning. I was in atreatment facility with Leah a few years ago. She seemed to have a grip onbreaking the cycle. However, it can still be a struggle when times getrough. She bares all in this graphic tale of her life as she lived it. Iadmire her courage to re-live those years.

3-0 out of 5 stars A disturbing tale
Leah Hulan is a friend of mine. This book details her struggle with a lifetime of rejection and loneliness. These maladies later manifested themselves in her ongoing struggles with eating disorders. She bares hersoul on the demons that have tormented her. While this is not the greatestbook ever written and tends to be overly dramatic at times, it is a gripingtale on Leah's struggle to find herself and take control of her life. Iwould recommend the book to anyone struggling with eating disorders or havesomeone close to them similarly afflicted. ... Read more

Product Description
Eating disorders, which include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and compulsive eating are conditions well recognized by the medical profession and the media, and are increasingly gaining understanding in the UK Church too. Helena Wilkinson, herself an ex-anorexic, and now a counsellor, maintains that eating disorders serve a purpose in people's lives, and addresses the underlying factors - such as family background, pain and fear of responsibility - that contribute to eating disorders. The book is a practical and compassionate guide based on extensive personal experience. Other titles by Helena Wilkinson include "Puppet on a String" and "Snakes and Ladders". ... Read more
