Not as good as the series
Love the show - this book -- not so good.First of all, Michael comes off as a jerk with an attitude - and he is a good guy with an edge.

Also, the cussing was unnecessary.Movies and some books are so filled with F bombs, it distracts me.Impress me with your storyline and characters - not how much you can cuss.

I think this is a hard genre to write.Create a book on someone else's vision and try to make it your own.That is a tough sell. I'll stick with the TV series.

Also, as one other reviewer mentioned, lots of typos, etc.

I love the show in which this book was based, it is with out a doubt one of the greatest shows of all time. Of course I originally started watching it because of the great Bruce Campbell. But as soon as the show started I loved everything about it, so of course I had to get the books when they came out. Still not sure why I never reviewed this before but I guess the time is now. I have been doing a lot of reading lately, not to long ago I spent a lot of time in a hospital. I also spent a lot of time in Maryland so I brought a lot of books and got some reading done.

This book is amazing mainly because when you are reading it the book really feels like the show. It is narrated by Michael in the same way he narrating the show, I love how it was written. Written wonderfully by Tod Goldberg this is a highly entertaining read, especially if you like the show. He found a way to make this book feel like the show, it was not hard to get into this story at all. In fact when I was reading the book I was actually playing it in my head like the show, I could see it.

The story like the show has two different stories going on at the same time, one for each side of Michael's needs. One is for his need to find out more on his Burn Notice although this time it is a little more forced. Then another is a job he takes on with Sam who of course on the show is the great Bruce Campbell. And just like the show they mix both of them so well and start to mesh them together some how, I love it. One story involves a woman whose husband is missing, and the other involves a former lady friend of Michael's.

After going to a lunch meeting with his mother and noticing some suspicious people who are armed lurking about, Michael finds out an old friend is in town. Her name is Natalya and she was looking to get Michael's real love Fiona, and all because she needs his help. Natalya is in some trouble and basically puts it all onto Michael, but he may get closer to his Burn Notice. Also factor in that he kinda does not have a choice in the matter, so off with Fi and Sam he goes. A lot of great and exciting things happen in this book and Natalya just strikes me as sexy.

The other side to this story involves a case Sam brings to Michael's attention, a woman named Cricket O'Connor is missing husband and her money. Of course you can put two and two together but there is more to the story then there seems. So sensing that Sam really wants to help this woman Michaels comes aboard and takes on this case at the same time. So not only does he have to help find this woman's husband and money but also deal with Natalya. The action is fast paced and should not take long to read at all.

All of the humor, action, and style of the show can be found within the pages of this book. For any one who is a fan of the show there is no doubt in my mind you will like this. And for book readers who may not watch the show this one right here may just make you a fan. I guess I need to review the next book and let you all know about that one, but until then enjoy this one. I had a great time with this book and recommend it to all out there reading.

Let me start off with I'm a HUGE fan of the show. During the off season I picked this up to feed my fix till the new season. I wanted to like this book, I really did, but I couldn't get past the first 40 pages. My problem wasn't as much with the story as the writing itself. Love it.
I really enjoyed the whole book. The characters were fascinating and the way the story connected with the arcane society was interesting. I did not find the book disappointing in any way.

Depends what you're looking for..
For me, this was a case of having a great title, and then not doing much with it.I'm still looking for the Sizzle.

This book is almost completely centered around people with paranormal senses & good vs. evil.Very interesting.I also liked the characters.. each one of them.And, if that's what you're primarily looking for, (a drama) it's perfect for you.
I was disappointed because the book I read before it was Seduction, under Jayne's other pseudonym.It was intimate, romantic, lusty, explicit, ..lol wonderful.If you're looking for something like That, like I was, then I'd call the title of this review "Fizzle and Yearn", because the romance, I felt was more of an afterthought & made me long for the style she wrote with Seduction.
I am not well-versed with Jayne Ann Krentz's books or all her pseudonyms, but would appreciate some sort of guide to navigate through what seems to be very varied waters of they types of books she writes.

I enjoyed this book very much.The paranormal gives an extra boost to the very human way of setting up levels of power.The very fact of paranormal opens up all kinds of way people show their goodness and badness. The human mind works in wonderous ways.

Dialogue... *Cringe*
Jayne Ann Krentz is an author I go to when I can't find anything else to read. I generally prefer her historical-romance writing under Amanda Quick over her contemporary stories. Even though I didn't enjoy the first Arcane Society novel, White Lies, I decided to give it another try.

The Arcane Society in itself is an interesting an idea. It's a secret society of individuals who have varying psychic abilities, including extreme intuition, heightened "hunting" instincts, reading auras and hearing or experiencing traces of emotions left behind on objects. As you can imagine, anyone with these types of abilities could be involved in a complicated, out of the ordinary story.

In Sizzle and Burn, the main character, Raine, has been using her psychic abilities to solve cold-cases. Due to circumstances in her childhood, she was raised outside of the Arcane Society, and has little knowledge of others with her psychic abilities. When Raine becomes involved in an open investigation, she, along with private investigator Zack Jones, is drawn into the centre of an ongoing feud between the Arcane Society and their shady (conveniently named) rivals, Nightshade.

According to the review on the cover--this book has so called, "snappy" dialogue between characters. Apparently to the reviewer, "snappy" is synonymous with "ridiculous". I found myself rolling my eyes at some of the text.

For example:
"...Help me with the b*tch."
"I guess that would be me," Raine said. She gave a really super version of her special, patented, screw you smile.

Don't lie! You just rolled your eyes, didn't you?

Anyway, this book was a solid three-stars. Even though the dialogue was somewhat cringe-worthy, the plot was okay and the characters were okay. It was a decidedly average read.

good read for burn notice fans
this book was just ok. i honestly liked the first book "the fix" more. Tod Goldberg totally nails the narrative style of the series and the attitudes and styles of Michael,Sam,Fiona and even Nate. However, the plot and story just kinda roll along with nothing really terribly exciting happening. I would recommend this book to die hard Burn Notice fans only. If you don't watch the show, you probly will not like this book.
I would totally love it if Tod Goldberg wrote a Burn Notice book with Michael Shanks character Victor in it.(yes, i know Victor's dead on the show-but the book series hasn't even touched on that plot line yet!) It could happen. That would be awsome! I'd pay well over market price for that!

A real life changing book
I had been vaguely familiar with Stu's accomplishments, but the learning philosophy behind his training method, getting to know your body, and the changes he introduces to your diet have brought about a complete change in my life.I absolutely recommend it.

Highly recommended!
This is a great book and it has taken me farther then I thought possible in a very short period of time. I enjoyed all the personal stories of how the concepts are applied in the real work and the explanations of how he discovered them. I have already used the techniques to run my first 1/2 marathon (pain-free!), so I can truly say the concepts work.

My biggest issue with the book is that Stu likes to repeat himself... a lot. I haven't counted, but I'm sure he explains the "breathing into the ball" concept in its entirety at least two dozen times. It's not a big deal since you can recognize the repetition and skim past it, but it is a little annoying.

My other issue with this book is that the science is a little dated, even for a book written 10 years ago. It seems he is clinging onto the understanding of the human body that he learned while in college and hasn't kept his knowledge up to date. As a result, the scientific explanations he uses to justify his techniques are not entirely correct. Don't get me wrong, the techniques do work; it's just the explanations of why they work are incorrect.

In conclusion, this is a great book and I highly recommend it!

Slow Burn: Burn Fat Faster By Exercising Slower
I have tried various exercise routines, and running has always been about as interesting as watching paint dry. I saw Mr Mittleman do a short video with Tony Robbins, and he talked briefly about his philosophy. I was impressed enough that I figured I would find his book which I did on Amazon and read it. To say this book has had a personal impact on my life would be a understatement. What he discusses is not only a good way to approach running but life itself, not only did I start a new workout regiment, but I also have made some changes in my life as well, which are starting to pay dividends.

This book has inspired me not just physically, but mentally as well. What you get out of this book is up to you, read it with a open mind and try it, you might just be surprised.

Not a book on how to do slow burn exercise
I was looking for a book to learn how to do Slow Burn Exercise.What exercises
to do and details about the time to be dedicated to each exercise, techniques
for slow burn weight lifting and I was in hope the book would show pictures

3.5 -- Good but not too memorable
Business-savvy eldest of 3 sisters gets unexpected $80million inheritance from unknown uncle & thinks its tied to 2 bomb explosions she's been involved in & amazingly survived without serious injury.Due to the major stressors in her life recently & long-time attraction, she has a 1-night stand with her BFF's playboy detective brother without expecting commitments but their one night somehow means more to hero. Hero takes it upon himself to protect her & find the culprit as he gets more emotionally attached to her.

This Garwood book has her trademark good writing & sensuality.The action part was fine. Although it was a quick read, it didn't engage my emotions to an intense degree.It may have helped to flush out H & H's earlier relationship more & how they end up having a 1-night stand & then being in love with each other.I prefer an action-romance, where romance is the primary focus.This one tried to even out the scale so this may be the reason why I had some difficulty remembering what this book was about when writing this review.

Recommended.

Fabulous!
Another terrific read from Julie Garwood.I really love it when she links characters in various books and the Buchanan family are some of my favorites.While the mystery of the who did it and/or why is consistent in her novels, Ms Garwood continues to find unique situations for her characters, and Kate and Dylan are no exception. From start to finish, this is one tale that you won't want to put down.

Slow Burn
Kate MacKenna can thank her wonder bra for her life being spared when a bomb went off at a party being thrown by Carl Bertolli. She had snuck into the shrubs to dispose of it when the blast went off. She wasn't injured badly, but the hits just kept coming when she was released from the hospital, and found out that her company was in jeopardy due to loans her deceased mother had put in motion. Not only her company was at risk, but also her own name due to the name recognition. The next hit came when her best friend Jordan Buchanan called, and asked her to come because she was having surgery.

Kate dropped everything to be with Jordan, and as it turned out, Jordan was going to be fine. No one in her family knew what was going on, so Kate was surprised when her brother Dylan showed up. He knew about Jordan's condition, and knew Kate needed him, so he gave her his shoulder. What should have been a friendly gesture soon turned to out of control passion. They were agreed that it was just for one night, but he didn't leave her thoughts even when she headed home. Kate hadn't been home more than a few minutes when someone tried to run her down at the airport. When she received a call from a contractor demanding to meet her at the warehouse she was considering renting, she was sitting out front when it exploded.

When Dylan showed up on Kate's doorstep, she was shocked. Dylan was on leave from the Boston police department after being shot, but he was concerned by all the near misses plaguing Kate. He contacted the local PD, and learned these were deemed deliberate attempts. He wouldn't admit to himself why, but he wasn't leaving until he found out who was threatening Kate. They didn't have to wait long to find out what was behind the attempts because Kate found out she had just inherited 80 million from her recently deceased uncle. When Kate is abducted, Dylan is rushing against time to rescue her.

This is my first book by this author, and I really enjoyed it. Dylan and Kate are priceless together, and the years of friendship/torment really added to their dynamics. Well-written characters, and an interesting suspenseful story made this a good read.

Well Worth the Money
My daughter is homeschooled . I did o.k. in school--But math for me got alot harder after 5th grade. I really needed a book that would give me info. on not only WHAT to teach but, HOW to teach.This book is going to be such a big help for me.My daughter was in the talented & gifted program at her old school.I want to make sure that she keeps on getting the straight A's that she was getting. This book takes some of the pressure off of me by giving me ideas, activities, and (really important to me) ways to assess my daughter's understanding of new concepts. Because if she doesn't understand it, she will in no way excel. Anyone that homeschools, that didn't get straight A's in math will benefit from this book. When I bought this book, it was under "Brand New WITH My Math Lab".It never said that it had been used.When I got the book, the access code had been used.Now I have to buy the $40 access code.

Action-Packed Swoon Worthy Romance (B+ Grade)
Assassin's Heart (Book 2 in the Order of the Sicari) by Monica Burns is filled with incredible world building, strong, warrior type characters and an amazing romance. Assassin's Heart stars Lysander, a facially scarred and brooding Sicari fighter. The beginning of Assassin's Heart takes place a year before the events of the first book, Assassin's Honor. Lysander has been taken captive by his enemy, the Praetorian. He is tortured horribly by one of the Praetorian who scrapes away the skin on part of his face and blinds him in one eye. Even though Lysander is in incredible pain and expects to die, he has no regrets, especially since he had an amazing night of lovemaking with the healer Phaedra (Sister to Ares, the hero in Assassin's Honor). He loves Phaedra with everything he has inside him, but his torturer tells him something that will destroy him. Lysander's mother was raped by the Praetorian torturer and from that violent act, Lysander was conceived. Everything Lysander thought he knew was a lie, and now he feels dirty and less of a man. He is saved by his fellow Sicari, and Phaedra wants to heal his face, but he rejects her healing powers and her help. He wants to live with the scars his father has given him as punishment. Everything is explained in such detail that I'm simply amazed by how Monica could do it all.

I'm usually not one for flashback scenes, but the ones with Maximus and Cassiopeia, both Lysander and Phaedra dream about are very well written and fit in the story. I also loved how Monica had me aching for two characters whose story must be written because they made such an impact on me. This deals with Atia, one of the heads of the Sicari Order. She is the mother of Cleo, another Sicari. Atia hides many secrets. One being of Cleo's father who has no idea that Atia gave birth to her. He is Marcus, a Sicari Lord, who had to give up Atia decades ago because of his important role. Now he's back and wants Atia. He won't allow her to walk away from him as he did before. But there's another man who protects both Cleo and Atia, who also wants her as much as Marcus does. Their relationship is filled with mistrust and hurt. And there's a major shocking twist with their son that Marcus took away who could possible destroy the Sicari after all these centuries. At times I was more interested in Atia and Marcus, versus Lysander and Phaedra, and can't wait to see what Monica has in store for them.

Assassin's Heart is very rich and descriptive. The men are full of smoldering sexiness and their women are their equals in every sense of the word. If you're lacking an action packed, swoon worthy type romance, do give Assassin's Heart a read. You will definitely enjoy the masterful talents of Monica Burns who never fails to disappoint.

My review:
I read a lot and read this book in one sitting! I just couldn't put it down after I started reading, I was so enthralled. The story that Ms. Burns weaves together was one of tragedy, torture, sorrow, adventure and love. Anyone who likes paranormal romance is going to love this book. I just read Assassin's Honor the day before reading this book and couldn't wait to see what Ms. Burns had in store for us.

Lysander's story is so tragic and sad it made me want to cry for all he's had to endure. He was tortured by the Praetorians and they sliced off part of his face, but later we find out he has even more to endure and it seems like it might be too much for him. He has secret's and he's sure that if anyone finds out about them they won't trust him or love him.

Phaedra is a healer for the Sicari and she's been in love with Lysander for over a year, but he's keeping her at arm's length because he doesn't trust her to love him if she ever finds out his secret. They both have to get past the hurt of the past year when they are thrown together much to the dismay of Lysander, when they go in search of The Tyet of Isis. An ancient artifact they want to get before the Praetorian's get their hands on it.
Neither Phaedra or Lysander know that the other have been having dreams of the first Sicari lord and his wife and we get pulled into another heart breaking story as their dreams get more vivid and we find out they are dreaming about their own past lives.

As well as the past life story there is a romance story from other characters in this book that comes alive in a shocking way. Atia the Prima Consul and Marcus a Sicari Lord have a secret past and Atia has been keeping a huge secret from Marcus as he is about to find out. Their history and romance that barely conceals itself under the surface is sure to explode in the coming books from Ms. Burns. I liked this second book in the Order of the Sicari series even more than the first one if that's even possible. I think this series can only get better and more exciting as time goes by and we read stories about the rest of the characters.
This story within a story could have been so confusing if a less talented author had tried to write it, but Ms. Burns is incredibly talented and has found a way to bring a whole new world to the paranormal genre that fans are going to be talking about for years.

If you liked Assassin's Honor, you'll love Assassin's Heart.

Enchanting
The story
The Sicari are deadly enemies of the Praetorians. The praetorians are evil murdering religious zealots. Lysander get caught in a praetorian trap and ends up finding out his father is a praetorian, that's why he is a telekinetic and telepath. The praetorian raped his mother. Crushed and scarred for life Lysander won't let his love, Phaedra, heal him for fear of her finding out what happened. Phaedra's parents were killed by praetorians. To protect her he won't let her near him, he shoves her away for a year. Phaedra is recruited for a mission in Rome - praetorian territory - to find the Tyet of Isis. Phaedra and Lysander must work together where neither is able to ignore their feelings.

Thoughts
I really liked the plots in this book. I enjoyed the story line. There are glimpses of the past with Maximus and Cassiopeia. Lysander has dreamt of Maximus since he was a child. I liked reading their story line. This book is filled with mystery, betrayal, love, sacrifice, unity and family. It was intriguing to read Atia's story, her love and her love lost. I can't wait to read more, especially Atia's and her daughter Cleopatra's story. There is a lot of push/pull between Phaedra and Lysander. At one point I thought enough is enough, but that was the end of it.It was interesting to read where the Sicari and the Praetorians came from and more of the inner workings. I can't imagine the pain of being tortured by your father, awful. Lysander grows in this book, Phaedra as well. I can't decide if I liked this or Assassin's Honor more. They were both great. THe only complaint I have is throughoutthe book cuss words and terms of endearment are in Italian? Anyway, I had to look up the translations, curiosity got to me.I would have been nice if they gave the translations in the book so we the readers could know what they're saying.

Second in the series just gets hotter!
It is fabulous! This is the second in the series by Monica Burns. You don't have to read the first to love this one, but you will want to. Hot, sword carrying heros, a link to the ancient past, steamy love scenes... it has it all. Did I mention paranormal powers? Hot, Hot, Hot! Read Assassin's Honor or Assassin's Heart and you will be hooked on the Sicari.

Quintessential documentary on baseball.
Absolutely awesome, indepth documentary.I only have one complaint:It seems that it is a rather biased view of the Dodgers move to Los Angeles.I don't see how a documentary can be made on this subject with absolutely no mention of Robert Moses and the battle between him and O'Malley.Other than that, I love this set and watch it over and over again.

It brought me back to loving and following the game I loved for years. For that alone it is worth everything bright and beautiful.

Dekker Does It Again
Once again Ten Dekker comes up with a gripping story. I have read most all of Dekker's books and loved them all. This is no exception.

Very one dimensional simplistic tale
Boring one dimensional book.I had to read it for a book club and felt like I was being clubbed over the head with a moral lesson of good and evil.The main character is "split" into 2 halves and that is how the story is told for the majority of the time.It came across as a fourth grade reader.The characters were flat.The plot was uncomplex.Not my kind of book.

Paralyzing in its Intensity-The Dichotomy of the Soul?
I read Burn back in 2009, when I received an ARC at an author sponsored program, and gave it a second read a few days ago.

Burn is a fast-paced story of two girls in a kumpania-a traveling gypsy group in the Southwestern United States, and what became of them when money and corruption came to their sheltered community.The two girls couldn't be more different.Katie, a full blooded gypsy, is a dark haired beauty with curly hair, dark skin and eyes, and a peaceful, mild manner.Janeal is half Roma, half gaji (a term the kumpania use for outsiders).She has beautiful chestnut hair andlighter features, but she has always felt "less than",as compared to Katie.Janeal has a wild and free spirit and very much resents Katie, despite the fact that they are best friends.Janeal's boyfriend, Robert, is also full gypsy, and is friends with Katie-a constant source of jealousy for Janeal.

Janeal has lost pretty much everyone in her life who loves her.Her father, the leader of the kumpania, is the only one she has left besides Robert, and these days, she's not even sure of him.To make things even more unbearable, she believes, perhaps accurately, that the only reason people in the kumpania even tolerate her is because her father is the leader.Lately, though, she's been hearing things about her beloved father, things she's sure are lies about drug deals and millions of dollars hidden in their camp.

This is Dekker's second novel with Erin Healy.Their styles were woven together to the point that it was pretty much impossible to determine who contributed what.When I'm reading something that is co-authored, it is very tedious if I can say, "ok, author A wrote this chapter", and then "ok, author B wrote this chapter".In my opinion, it is only effective and worth reading if they complement each other and flow rather than look like a jigsaw puzzle.Also, the chapters vary in length and flow with the action, rather than are of the same length, which seems to sometimes go along with the co-author thing.Regardless, it works well.We get the best of both.

I found the fast pace and the releationship between the main characters to be intriguing and unique; I have certainly never read anything like this before.This is one that will keep you guessing until the very end.Burn is an intense novel that will rip at your soul.One thing is for certain.You will not forget Katie and Janeal soon.They will leave you with a lingering desire to look within and ponder just how much room there is in one person's soul.

Great Book
I really liked this book.I thought the plott was unique and would read it again.

Disappointed
I am a huge Ted Dekker fan.I have been for many years now.I loved Circle Trilogy and still view Blink to be among the best of his work.I really enjoyed Kiss and thought that Burn would continue what appeared to be an excellent pairing of Erin Heatly and Dekker.I was wrong.But do not blame it on the prose.All the mechanics are top-notch.It's well written and nicely polished.The lacking boils down to the story, or for lack of a better phrasing, the inspiration missing in it.

I was bored to tears half-way through the book.I literally had to force myself to finish it.I saw every twist and turn miles before they happened.Suspense?Not there.Mystery?Not much.The characters all felt plain, lacking much depth.Nothing that could connect with me.And then there is the ending.Blah.Seriously, I do not know what to make of it.It certainly left me unfulfilled and not in the least bit satisfied.This was one of the worst Dekker books I have read to date.Next up is The Bride Collector which I hope will see Dekker return to form.The last two of the six part Lost books were equally bad (the first four were good).I like Dekker a lot.Slow down if you have to.Quality over quantity. ... Great read!
This was the first novel I've read from James Grippando, and wow! As soon as I started reading it, I wasn't able to put it down. It made me want to keep reading to find out what happened to Ivy, Michael's money, Saxton Silvers, etc. It's very mysterious and suspensful and a very good read!! I also liked the way the author writes from the point of view of the different characters that allows you to know what every character is thinking. A must read!!

Great summer read
Just finished this book......had a hard time putting it down - it's a great book to read sitting by the pool!

Skillful writing but too preachy
I'm a fan of Grippando's and was eager to read this book with a new hero and new twist.The good thing is that the plot moved very quickly and I found it hard to put down.Vivid characters, good scene-setting in NY and chases/kidnapping/dire threats all over the place.

My biggest problem with the book is that the complicated financial scheme which was at its heart had to be explained in GREAT DETAIL, and, it seemed, over and over to different characters.These explanations slowed down the action. The author also put passionate criticism of Wall Street into every other sentence - yes, it was high-flying; yes, it made alot of $$ for a few and was extraordinarily dangerous for many; yes, the ponzi schemes all came tumbling down.I'm not minimizing any of that - and I lost money in the market like millions of others - but the author became too preachy.It reminded me of the preachy tone of Steig Larsson's third book, THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNET'S NEST, where thelively plot was overtaken at many points by the author's preaching about government corruption.For a non-fiction book, that would have been fine.For fiction, it didn't fit and also blurred the time frames - too much of looking forward AND backward, with no sense of who or when.

In short, I'd recommend as a good read but don't believe it merits a five star rating.

Get back to Jack
I read 17 pages and could not stand it anymore.I love reading Grippando novels, not only those featuring Jack Swyteck, but all of them, but this one is too familiar, too pat, after only 17 pages.Disappointed.Maybe the author has lost the "eye of the tiger"?

The cover is merely a snippet of what is inside this book! Truly deadly!
The picture on the cover is so sad! An entire family murdered! I just had to find out what heinous lowlife could have done something like that! Surely he was a lowlife and tried to save himself in the end. The rest of the photos are also pretty shocking. What people can do to others and themselves is certainly a subject that volumes of photographs can be taken and compiled. Certainly sobers one to view the people in the photos.

Another Burns Classic
Chilling and disturbing, yet beautiful.Large, detailed photos and interesting text make this an engrosing read.I have 4 Burns Archive books and love them all.

A peek under the rock of crime
This latest book from the Burns archive presents an intriguing overview of death and disaster from two perspectives: individual criminal and State controlled killings between 1890 and 1950.The book also looks at punishment and police activity.

The first chapter: Crime Scenes cover death and other criminal activity in photographic detail with plenty of those remarkably unemotional forensic images that the authorities (and possibly juries) only get to see though in the past they must have been common in tabloid papers and detective magazines, least the less horrific photos.The fourth chapter: Executions has a selection of historical official death defined by the culture it has been carried out in.China favored beheading, Spain the garrote, Japan carried out the last crucifixion in 1864 and the Nazis extensively used the guillotine, which is something I was not aware of.

Two chapters: Crime Scenes and Police Action fill up well over half the book.The police, in the past, seem to be strong on posing with the bad guys (dead or alive) knowing that popular papers would run the photos.Editors knew their readers could never get too much true crime reporting.Apart from the dead bodies in Crime Scenes there are several that would seem rather bland: part of a fence; an open window; a street scene but one of the strengths of the book are the very detailed captions that make the most dull photo come alive.

I've given the book four stars because I was rather put off by the editorial style.All the photos are presented in a rather minimalist format with plenty of white page space (it does look rather incongruous to see historical images displayed like this) and it certainly would have helped if the subbing had been more rigorous: there are plenty of paragraphs several hundred words in length, unfortunately set in a rather small typeface with a long line length.Basically this is not the easiest book to read.I would have thought an index would have been essential in a publication like this.

WARNING I think it is worth mentioning that throughout the book there are plenty of photos showing dead bodies (including close-ups) and in particular the Crime Scene chapter features several with severe mutilations.

Americana - the Charles Burns way
Big Baby is a series of comics Burns did in the mid 80s and early 90s about an alien-looking kid nicknamed Big Baby. They're drawn in Burns' inimitable and unique style, all inky blacks and glaring whites, and show you the early formations of some of the ideas that led Burns to create "Black Hole".

"Curse of the Molemen" is about a neighbour who's having a swimming pool put in as a warped test of his wife's fidelity - will she cheat on him with one of the workmen? One of these workmen teases Big Baby that there's molemen in the hole and so one night Big Baby goes to the hole and imagines a subterranean prison with evil looking creatures holding humans captive. The story ends happily though and on an ambiguous note - did he imagine the molemen?

"Teen Plague" is similar to the themes of "Black Hole" and features one of Burns' most disturbing creations - a talking eyeball on a human body!

"Blood Club" is about a ghost boy at a summer camp and Big Baby's attempts to put the spirit to rest.

The stories all feature elements of growing up and childhood which many of us can relate to but Burns twists them with monsters and other-wordly beings.

It's an interesting book with a great central character and some fun, disturbing stories. If you've read Burns before and liked him, you'll love it. Amazing artwork too. A good read.

Great stuff from one of the very best
I've never read a bad comic by Charles Burns; The art is incredible and his storytelling is subtle, smart, and engaging.I consider him one of the top five cartoonists working today (Dan Clowes, R. Crumb, Adrienne Tomine, and Chris Ware being the others) and "Big Baby" is another fine example of his talent.As always with contemporary comic books, it's a bit expensive for about a half hour of reading, but it inspires immediate rereading and is just to good to miss.Highly recommended.

Burn's Best
I have been a devout reader of Burn's Black Hole comic since I first found it on the shelves a couple of years ago.That he is a mesmerizing artist goes without saying.Black Hole has a very meandering plot at times, and it gets somewhat overshadowed by it's technical virtuosity.Big Baby, while it has less scope, is much more concise and places the reader directly in the path of evil.The final story in this volume "Blood Club" is a really haunting tale that I believe is his best work.One minor note, the image above is from Blood Club but it is not the actual cover on the book...It has Big Baby playing with some toys.

Transforming Leadership
With not a lot of political background but a love for reading leadership, I thought this book was excellent.I came away from the book understanding political leadership and the dynamics that are at play.I was really inspired by the call to creative leadership but more so reading the development of the American documents and the leadership that went into it.Great foundational book for political leadership.

Burns has a unique way of weaving the events of History and Leadership Theory by presenting a logical praxis.It is in this unique capability that the reader will find him or herself finding not only a fair and balanced articulation of the events as they occurred but the leadership ramifications incurred as a result.Not shy being a professed liberal he makes the strong argument that the Democratic Party has drastically missed the leadership boat due to the party representative's purpsoseful diluting the message of the liberal stance by having Presidential Leadership for the Democratic Party run alone, basically severing ties with party affiliation while maintaining a clear centrist positon not only through the campaign cycle but throughout the President's Administration.

This should come as no surprise as many Americans sense a leadership void in our country which is the result of nothing less than centrist politicians attempting to appease all parties simply in an effort to clinch their respective nominations.

Still Burns makes the compelling argument in this volume that transactional leadership (Leading by Dealing: the phrase being mine) is simply not enough to carry through the transformation so needed in our current political landscape.

The book is dead on and exposes the dangers involved in this practice while Burns argues the essentiality of leading at a higher level and how these changes take place only through transformational leadership.

A caveat pre-emptor is in order here: For those of you seekig a formula for leading at this higher level you simply will not find it.Perhaps this is because Burns believes in the empowerment of people by providing hard core examples throughout the entire landscape of history and perhaps it is for other reasons.However, the end result is the reader comes away with the clear distinctions between transactional and transformation leadership, those in power who utilized such a leaderhip style and the net effect of such leadership.

Finally, I found Burns'insistence on conflict being an essential component to real lasting change coupled with this transformational leadership to be quite persuasive and helpful.In addition, Burns consistent focus on the essential interplay berween leaders and followers demonstrates how one as a leader can supercede simplistic and standardized methodologies all pointing to the clear difference between transactional and transformational leadership.One final thought: Be prepared to make a change if your main operating belief is to be a simple broker, horesetrader, or anything of the sort and be prepared to become acquainted with the path least travelled which is longer lasting and influenttial in leader-follower dyadic interactions.

Was hoping for better - and the dialogue... Yikes
If the description of the stars were different, this would be lower.On Goodreads, 2 stars is "It was OK" and that's really all I thought of this book.Here, 3 stars is too many, but the 2 star descriptor of "I don't like it" isn't really accurate.So...

I was right - I should have read these in order.Having read this book, I now understand so much more about Primal Heat.Although, I still am not totally hooked on Ms. Sizemore's writing.This too was ok.Not stellar, not terrible.I will read the rest of the set that I have (since I got them free) but I doubt I will run out to purchase the ones I don't already have.

So, here we have Alec and Domini.Alec is supposed to be a vampire prime who has chosen to live in the daylight and take all the daylight drugs - enough so that he had a career as a Colonel in the Army - but the drugs aren't really working anymore.Domini is a tough private security person who also has visions.And she lives in fear of her Grandfather.They met, can't stay aware from each other, blah blah blah (another book that is totally formulaic for this genre).

So, the dialogue between the characters is pretty bad.Really, calling Alec a "d-boy" - has the author met anyone who was ever in special forces?I doubt they refer to themselves as "d-boys" (I know some special ops folks, no one from "Delta" so maybe Delta guys are the odd balls of the bunch, but none of the special ops folks I know refer to themselves in such corny cheesy ways...)There was little enough of the dialogue between the characters though to be able to deal.As a result, the love affair and the bond that was developing seems forced.I miss the books that first got me into this genre where you felt like there was a relationship forming (notwithstanding the formula that writers in this genre feel compelled to never deviate from, no matter how terrible the story becomes or how terrible some of the chapters with the bad guys seem to get).Lately, including with both of the Sizemore books I have read, it seems like they meet and 3 seconds later one of them is thinking/saying "I love you" - it's a little to quick, without development, even for the fantasy world that these books take place in.

Holly, Domini's friend is probably the most intriguing character in the book but we only get a little of her - during the middle third of the book.Domini's development is minimal.We know she was an odd ball - but only really becuase of Holly - but we never hear any good stories as to why.That would have helped me like her a lot more, I am sure.And Grandpa, we don't get nearly enough of.

Alec's family and the gathering had potential, but it fizzled when Alec let Domini escape the party.And we didn't see what the implications to Alec from his Matri/mother were.I think I would have liked to have seen that confrontation or conversation.

Where we learn the truth about Blackbird was kind of a let down too.It was so - anticlimactic in nature.It was taken too well by Domini, even for me (who totally leaves reality at the front door when I read this genre).

One the plus side, Alec's mom did some explaining and provided some background on the Prime thing.As well as on the whole Tribe/Clan/Family thing.So I understand more.Although there are still enough holes to drive 18-wheeler's through and I am not sure, based on how little Sizemore seems to want to inform the reader of the rules of the universe, that I will ever get enough of the details to be satisfied in this world.

I liked Alec more then I like most of the male vamps lately.He was written so as to not be quite so... well, the term I would use is so not PG rated - but lets say he's a better balance of masculinity and guy-in-love then most of the guys we read about (who are totally macho and so over the top caveman about "their women" that they almost can't be tolerated or taken seriously).

Finally, the steaminess factor - totally a low rating on that front.I would read those scenes, and say to myself "that's it?"Glad I got these free.

Great story
I really enjoyed this story. At the beginning I didn't expect it to be all that since it starts a little slow and it was to hard to believe some things (like about Domini being psychic) which made me lose some kind of interest; but as I kept reading, things started to make sense making the story so much better than I imagined. It's a very romantic and sexual book, it lacked some sense of humor between the characters for my taste. Other than that, it a really great story.

This book was mediocre at best
I Burn For You by Susan Sizemore is one of those coulda, shoulda, woulda books to me. It could have been better, should have been better, and would have been better if the author had changed a few things. It was very disjointed, choppy. It jumped around from one scene to the next without smooth transitions. I liked the characters, but everything else was dull for me.

This is story is about Domini Lancer who is a bodyguard who works for her grandfather's protection company. She is also psychic. Alec Reynard is her soulmate, as well as being, a vampire. He has been taking medication to allow him to be out in the sun and lead a fairly normal life. The medicine though has not been working the way that it should so he is scared to take Domini as his soulmate until he gets himself under control.

Domini is a human and doesn't realize that Alec is a vampire. She just knows that she is having dreams about him and is intensely attracted to him. Alec takes a job at her grandfather's company to be near Domini, and it doesn't take long for Alec to realize that someone means to harm Domini. He will do anything to protect her even if that means telling her who he really is and whisking her away to someplace safe without having his urges under complete control and no medication on hand.

The whole storyline with Domini's friend, Holly was a snooze fest, and the book could have been lost 100 pages and it wouldn't have mattered. The first part of the book was not interesting and somewhat confusing about Alec's clan, his medication problems, and his life. The book should have explained things better. 3 stars!

A new take on vampire culture
Like a lot of people, I enjoy a good vampire romance, having been in love with Barnabas Collins most of my life! This book is one of many to pick from these days, and those of us who are into these tales couldn't be happier. How does it stack up to others? Well, it's steamy and sexy, with a unique look at an extended vampire family that lives within a hidden culture that is a bit different than the usual "gothic family in a castle" thing (though personally, I love those). The vampires here are also not dead/undead, but a different species, in a way, which I also found original and refreshing. The plot is a bit like the TV series "Moonlight," which I also loved. My favorite parts were the Convocation (wished that had gone on longer), the character of Grandpa and his Blackbird backstory, and a fantasy sequence early on where the heroine (how the heck do you pronounce her name, anyway? Doe-minny? Domin-eye?) dreams of herself as a medieval princess sent to be a vampire's bride. That one section was the hottest one in the book, to me. I must agree with some of the other reviewers that the hero wasn't all that attractive to me, and the heroine was a bit dull (and her comment about shooting feral dogs bugged the animal rescuer in me). There is also a unique (for romance novels) subplot featuring a Melissa Etheridge-type singer character that seemed to simply drop in the middle and was never mentioned again. I found that odd, though I understood the resolution (I think - it was a bit farfetched). The end of the book fell a tad flat - not to give too much away, but it seemed too easy for the vamps to triumph and why didn't the Miami cops show up? Overall some good parts and some duller parts. I liked it but probably won't go crazy looking for the next book in the series.

Less than zero
Too bad I could not rate this book a zero because it screams for it!To say I was disappointed is a gross understatement. I read the reviews from many readers and really expected a good read but in my opinion this book lacked everything I look for in Vampire Eroticism/Romance. The characters were dead-on one dimensional. There was no definable tension between Domini and Alec, no suspense within the story, and certainly no anticipation leading into the sex which, let's face it, all Vampire addicts crave and expect. I love this book!
With large, colorful pictures of vintage quilts and well thought-out directions and diagrams, this book is a treasure! I think this book will be useful for the beginner as well as the more experienced quilter. Eleanor Burns gives very thorough plans for cutting and constructing the quilts, and writes in an easy to understand manner. Her updated Double-Wedding Ring was a breeze to put together!

Wonderful Teacher Training for Why & How to Do "Hands-On"
Another reviewer mentioned that the vignettes are "too wordy." However, I think the format of describing actual lessons is the most valuable part of this resource. Anyone can abstractly and theoretically "plan" a lesson, but it's in the actual implementation of a lesson with real children that the learning does or does not occur. The authors are master teachers -- and we get to learn from them. We learn how the teacher organizes the materials, how she presents the new activities, how she evaluates what needs to be clarified by explicit instruction and/or group discussion, and how she resolves any problems that come up in the lessons. We also get to hear the conversations and reasoning of real children, who sometimes make amazing connections, but at other times fail to grasp what the teacher thought would be a simple concept. We see unedited examples of their work, we view the spectrum of responses, we observe the various ways in which children approach and solve the same problem.

I felt that the authors' honesty about what does and does not work in a math lesson was the strongest aspect of this book for teacher training. We even learn what the teacher had in mind to do, but did not do because the children struggled to cooperate or were not interested! This is a window into REAL TEACHING, not some formulaic script for a perfect lesson. If you want that, purchase Hands-On Standards (Learning Resources), which is also good, but different in concept. I learned more about teaching math from reading, studying, and implementing the concepts in A Collection of Math Lessons than I have from any other resource or course on teaching math. An excellent resource for anyone -- teacher, tutor, homeschooler, parent -- who wants to not just "use manipulatives," but wants to understand why AND how to do it with real children in real classrooms.

too wordy
This book is written "in vignettes."In many cases you need to read several pages of text to have a clear idea of the activity being described. There is no consistent format to the chapters and sections.This book is much more difficult to use than it ought to be.

Is It Possible to Dislike Babymouse?
In this, her twelfth adventure, the cupcake-obsessed rodent discovers a new sport: soapbox derby! But Babymouse lacks the focus to build a racecar, and so calls on her best friend, Wilson, to "help." But being Babymouse's helper is a demanding job, and Wilson might not have time to fix his own ride. When Chuck E. Cheetah, three-time derby winner, scoffs at Wilson's skill, what will Babymouse do?

Is it possible to dislike Babymouse? She is such a winning character that it is hard to imagine anybody having bad things to say about her. Like all Babymouse volumes, the joy in this book comes from Babymouse's uniquely scattered perspective; while it might not be good for Babymouse when she drifts off into fantasyland, it's great for the reader. Holm and Holm put Babymouse in a chariot race, in a hot-air balloon, even in the climax of a movie set long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away. These sequences are an opportunity for some of the most joyous and playful art in comics, all rendered in trademark shades of pink, black, and white.


The fun and energy in these books are second to none, and young readers (and a few older ones) will be happy to see Babymouse back on the track.
