This little book is packed with power! Dodie Osteen is a living testimony of God's healing power! We've purchased several copies of this book to give away to our family and friends, especially those who are struggling with sickness. In fact, today, we just found out that our neighbor was diagnosed with Stage IV liver cancer and the first thing my husband said was...we need to get Ms. Dodie's book for him! God's word is the BEST medicine. I encourage anyone in pain (physical or emotional) to read this inspirational book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quick Read for Such a Tremedously Big Subject
This books explains how the death and resurrection of Jesus wasn't just for salvation but the Bible says over and over again that it was also for healing... no disclaimer. It is interesting how people will have faith that just a simple prayer can save their soul and give them eternal life but they don't have faith that this same principal also applies to healing.Simply put, healing is not a miracle but actually a promise from God through the death and resurrection of His son, Jesus Christ.FYI... The best information I have found online about salvation and healing is at [...] and here are 2 other Amazon books to get on this subject...

--- Anointing for Healing by Hemry/Lynnes... quick, short stories of documented incurable healings from God this is a great book... skip over the long and boring 30-some-page introductory and go straight into the quick short stores of the healing... anything from rare cancers, MS, ALS, autism, etc.

-- Jesus The Healer by EW Kenyon... this is the authority on healing, a must-read

5-0 out of 5 stars Written by a chemo survivor and an oncologist
When a family member was diagnosed with breast cancer 10 years ago and found out she'd have to go through chemotherapy, I ordered this book.It was a Godsend. It helped with all the practical things you need to know that the oncologist doesn't tell you, like what to bring along to chemotherapy sessions, little things other than the major anti-nausea drugs that can help with side effects, what will happen at the session and when, plus all kinds of other tidbits you probably never even thought to ask. There is a lot of very practical, down to earth information here.As a breast cancer survivor herself, the author knows the types of things you are curious about and presents them in plain, easy to understand everyday language.

This is a great book for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer and their caregivers. It's a book that I've bought for numerous people over the years because it was so helpful for us.

I do not know what I would have done without this book. It explains so much.Because of thisbookI have understood everything the Dr tells me. First went through lumpectomy and 4 sentinal node removed, then I think 10 more lymph node removal. I have painGo pump and a drain. Now awaiting pathology report to see what treatment. Now am reading on all the treatment possibilities, and will understand when the Dr explains the next steps. This book is so uplifting and makes me smile and I feel good just reading it. thanks.

Those were my exact words when I found out I had Breast Cancer. The author is very knowledgeable and has good insight into how women deal with certain issues.I appreciated her approach and her humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give me some sanity !
My wife( a cancer survivor) bought this for a friend who is undergoing various treatments. The friend was receiving advice-solicited and unsolicited-that ranged from ludicrous to "my cancer was worse than yours"....In any event, this book is wonderful for people who are experiencing emotions that are bewildering, frightening and hilarious at the same time.
If this fits your description, get this book now...it will prove to be objective and truly helpful as well as providing valuable everyday hints and tips on coping. A great read for a difficult situation( failing on more appropriate language)

1-0 out of 5 stars Some cancers disappear untreated, study finds
Some cancers disappear untreated, study finds
By Gina Kolata
Published: Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Cancer researchers have known for years that it was possible in rare cases for some cancers to go away on their own. There were occasional instances of melanomas and kidney cancers that just vanished. And neuroblastoma, a very rare childhood tumor, can go away without treatment.

But these were mostly seen as oddities - an unusual pediatric cancer that might not bear on common cancers of adults, a smattering of case reports of spontaneous cures. And because almost every cancer that is detected is treated, it seemed impossible even to ask what would happen if cancers were left alone.

Now, though, researchers say they have found a situation in Norway that has let them ask that question about breast cancer. And their new study, to be published Tuesday in The Archives of Internal Medicine, suggests that even invasive cancers may sometimes go away without treatment and in larger numbers than anyone ever believed.

At the moment, the finding has no practical applications because no one knows whether a detected cancer will disappear or continue to spread or kill.

And some experts remain unconvinced.

"Their simplification of a complicated issue is both overreaching and alarming," said Robert Smith, director of breast cancer screening at the American Cancer Society.

But others, including Robert Kaplan, the chairman of the department of health services at the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, are persuaded by the analysis.

The implications are potentially enormous, Kaplan said.

If the results are replicated, he said, it could eventually be possible for some women to opt for so-called watchful waiting, monitoring a tumor in their breast to see whether it grows. "People have never thought that way about breast cancer," he added.

Kaplan and his colleague, Dr. Franz Porzsolt, an oncologist at the University of Ulm, said in an editorial that accompanied the study, "If the spontaneous remission hypothesis is credible, it should cause a major re-evaluation in the approach to breast cancer research and treatment."

The study was conducted by Dr. H. Gilbert Welch, a researcher at the VA Outcomes Group in White River Junction, Vermont, and Dartmouth Medical School; Dr. Per-Henrik Zahl of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health; and Dr. Jan Maehlen of Ulleval University Hospital in Oslo. It compared two groups of women ages 50 to 64 in two consecutive six-year periods.

One group of 109,784 women was followed from 1992 to 1997.

Mammography screening in Norway was initiated in 1996. In 1996 and 1997, all were offered mammograms, and nearly every woman accepted.

The second group of 119,472 women was followed from 1996 to 2001. All were offered regular mammograms, and nearly all accepted.

It might be expected that the two groups would have roughly the same rate of breast cancers, either detected at the end or found along the way. Instead, the researchers report, the women who had regular routine screenings had 22 percent more cancers. For every 100,000 women who were screened regularly, 1,909 were found to have invasive breast cancer over six years, compared with 1,564 women who did not have regular routine screening.

There are other possible explanations, but researchers say that they are less likely than the conclusion that the tumors disappeared.

The most likely explanation, Welch said, is that "there are some women who had cancer at one point and who later don't have that cancer."

Dr. Barnett Kramer, director of the Office of Disease Prevention at the National Institutes of Health, said, "People who are familiar with the broad range of behaviors of a variety of cancers know spontaneous regression is possible," he said. "But what is shocking is that it can occur so frequently."

Although the researchers cannot completely rule out other explanations, Kramer said, "they do a good job of showing they are not highly likely."

A leading alternative explanation for the results is that the women having regular scans used hormone therapy for menopause and the other women did not. But the researchers calculated that hormone use could account for no more than 3 percent of the effect.

Maybe mammography was more sensitive in the second six-year period, able to pick up more tumors. But, the authors report, mammography's sensitivity did not appear to have changed.

Or perhaps the screened women had a higher cancer risk to begin with. But, the investigators say, the groups were remarkably similar in their cancer risk factors.

Smith, however, said the study was flawed and the interpretation incorrect. Among other things, he said, one round of screening in the first group of women would never find all the cancers that regular screening had found in the second group. The reason, he said, is that mammography is not perfect, and cancers that are missed on one round of screening will be detected on another.

But Welch said that he and his colleagues considered that possibility, too. And, he said, their analysis found subsequent mammograms could not make up the difference.

Kaplan is already thinking of how to replicate the result. One possibility, he said, is to do the same sort of study in Mexico, where mammography screening is now being introduced.

Donald Berry, chairman of the department of biostatistics at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said the study increased his worries about screening tests that find cancers earlier and earlier.

Unless there is some understanding of the natural history of the cancers that are found - which ones are dangerous and which are not - the result can easily be more and more treatment of cancers that would not cause harm if left untreated, he said.

"There may be some benefit to very early detection, but the costs will be huge - and I don't mean monetary costs," Berry said. "It's possible that we all have cells that are cancerous and that grow a bit before being dumped by the body. 'Hell bent for leather' early detection research will lead to finding some of them. What will be the consequence? Prophylactic removal of organs in the masses? It's really scary."

But Dr. Laura Esserman, professor of surgery and radiology at the University of California, San Francisco, sees a real opportunity to figure out why some cancers go away.

"I am a breast cancer surgeon; I run a breast cancer program," Esserman said. "I treat women every day, and I promise you it's a problem. Every time you tell a person they have cancer, their whole life runs before their eyes.

"What if I could say, 'It's not a real cancer, it will go away, don't worry about it,"' Esserman said. "That's such a different message. Imagine how you would feel." ... Read more

Product Description
The first part of the book delves into the details behind the failure of conventional treatments and provides a shocking portrait of just how unsuccessful current treatments are. This will provide invaluable guidance to cancer patients struggling with treatment decisions. It also shows how successful nutritional treatments have been in reversing cancers. When comparing success rates, nutritional treatments are the winners. The second part of the book provides an explanation of how cancer can be reversed naturally through diet and lifestyle changes. It details how the typical "healthy" American diet creates a toxic cellular environment which promotes cancer. It also explains how to change that environment in order to rebuild your immune system, while simultaneously changing the basic biochemistry of your body so it can fight cancer. The remaining parts of the book explain the RAVE Diet, which has been tailored and optimized to fit the needs of cancer patients in order to get the maximum nutritional bang for the calorie buck. It is a how-to-book with practical tips and suggestions and over 200 recipes so you can easily make the RAVE Diet your everyday diet. And the simple Rules of Meal Preparation will show you how to prepare the meals you like very quickly without ever looking at a recipe. It also discusses the good, bad and ugly aspects of supplementation, why certain popular supplements should not be taken and why certain not-so-popular supplements should be taken. It also dispels some myths regarding supplements interfering with conventional treatments, as well as many other topics, such as the controversy over soy and breast cancer. The book is not only easy to read, but entertaining and inspirational. For anyone with an interest in cancer - or anyone interested in their health - this book delivers the goods. It may, in fact, be one of the most important books you'll ever read. ... Read more

Product Description

Why has the “War on Cancer” languished, focusing mainly on finding and treating the disease and downplaying the need to control and combat cancer’s basic causes—tobacco, the workplace, radiation, and the general environment? This war has targeted the wrong enemies with the wrong weapons, failing to address well-known cancer causes.

As epidemiologist Devra Davis shows in this superbly researched exposé, this is no accident. The War on Cancer has followed the commercial interests of industries that generated a host of cancer-causing materials and products. This is the gripping story of a major public health effort diverted and distorted for private gain that is being reclaimed through efforts to green health care and the environment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insider Reviews ofUS Cancer Policy
This book reminds me of the "yellow journalism" tactics revealed by my US History professor, Dr. James Alsobrook. This book uncovers the things chemical manufacturers would rather we not know.Who is sleeping with whom, dumping of toxic chemicals into our waterways. So called "Experts" for sale to the highest bidder. If you care for the environment or have concerns about the rising rates of cancer in the USA and the world, this book is a must read. Our current crisis in the Gulf of Mexico with BP is but a tip of the iceburg. Our federal institutions have been "sleeping with the enemy" for a long time. This book documents many instances of "Experts" using their influence and power to hide the actual study results obtained by "in house" researchers when the results did not please the chemical manufacturers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Are Cancer Specialists Specious?
This is one of the most important public health books you will ever read.

It is a damning indictment of how professional cancer researchers have been compromised and corrupted by their ties to major carcinogenicists, such as the chemical, tobacco, petroleum, and pharmaceutical industries.

The author, who is a religious Jew, is extremely broadminded and fair. For example, while condemning the Nazis as brutal mass murderers, she also is willing to acknowledge the progressiveness of some of their public health efforts (such as trying to ban tobacco and discouraging pregnant women from drinking).

This book also has some wonderfully humane insights, such as when the author prays at her ill father's bedside, describing a beautiful sunrise to him in his comatose state. Later, after awakening from the coma, he tells her that he had heard every word!

If you do not read this book, you will find that while ignorance may be bliss it also may very well kill you.

SOME QUOTES FROM THE OPENING PAGES OF THIS BOOK:

.... Whether about smoking in public spaces or the chlorination of drinking water, each volume [of NAS reports] navigated treacherous and uncertain waters, and each ended with the familiar message: we need more research before we can be sure. I watched the maturing of the science of doubt promotion - the concerted and well-funded effort to identify, magnify and exaggerate doubts about what we could say that we know as a way of delaying actions to change the way the world operates.

How did we get to this point? Since its formal launch more than thirty-five years ago, the war on cancer has been fighting many of the wrong battles with the wrong weapons and the wrong leaders. Officially declared by President Nixon in 1971, the American effort aggressively targeted the illness but left its myriad causes untouched. Less than a decade after the famed U.S. Surgeon General's report of 1964 indicted tobacco as a cause of lung cancer, the president announced a national attack on cancer. Left off the table completely were tobacco, radiation, asbestos and benzene - materials that for decades had been well understood to be hazardous.

Years before any modern industrial nation started an official war on the disease, in the 1930s, researchers in Germany, Japan, Italy, Scotland, Austria, England, Argentina, the United States and France had shown that where people lived and worked affected their chances of getting cancer. Hueper published a sweeping synthesis of industrial, pharmaceutical and natural sources of cancer - at an especially inauspicious time, right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The war against those things that cause cancer has always been hampered whenever nations have traded metaphorical wars for real ones.

If some scientists had figured out nearly a century ago that the world around us affects the chance that we will develop cancer, why have we made so little headway in controlling these causes? My goal in this book is to explain when, how, why and by whom the spotlight has been kept away from many of the things that produce cancer. I will show how two radically different sets of standards have been applied to learning how to treat the disease on the one hand, and figuring out what produces it on the other. Where animal studies on the causes of cancer exist, they are often faulted as not relevant to humans. Yet when studies of almost identical design are employed to craft novel treatments and therapies, the physiological differences between animals and humans suddenly become insignificant.

.... Since World War II, whenever and however information on the cancer hazards of the workplace and the environment has been generated, it has typically been discredited, dismissed, or disparaged.

.... Scientists who tacked industrial causes of cancer often found themselves facing subtle and sometimes not so subtle warnings. Those who resisted pressure to back off often found their funding cut. In some cases, scientific research was stopped dead in its tracks, and many careers, like Hueper's, were derailed.

.... For decades, critics of the cancer establishment have protested - some thoughtfully, others stridently - the limited nature of the cancer war and the revolving door of cancer researchers in and out of cancer-causing industries. If many of these critiques have been animated and angry, they were not necessarily, for that reason, wrong.

.... I have come to admire the bold and compassionate work that is being carried out by cancer caregivers and researchers today. There are remarkable efforts under way involving natural products and breakthrough approaches in clinical trials, pushed by cancer patients who often have nothing to lose and doctors who may be wrestling with the disease themselves.

There is no one who deals with the disease now who doubts that we need to open a new front. To reduce theburden of cancer today, we must prevent it from arising in the first place, and we have to find new ways to keep the millions of cancer survivors from relapsing. No matter how efficient we become at treating cancer, we have to tackle those things that cause the disease to occur or recur. I believe that if we had acted on what has long been known about the industrial and environmental causes of cancer when this war first began, at least a million and a half lives could have been spared, a huge casualty rate that those who have managed the war on cancer must answer for. This book explains how I have come to that reckoning.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I have worked quite a bit in epidemiology, and with smoking and work related lung diseases, and looked forward to this book. It was really disappointing. It makes two important points, neither unknown from before; 1) Working exposures matter, and 2) industry/financial interests works against public health.

What is problematic with this book are all the long and tedious digressions, where I almost feel insulted as a reader because of what the author feels she must explain to me. If the important focus is that knowledge on the effects of working exposures on cancer were known 100 years ago, and the effects of smoking on cancer where known by German researchers before and during the war; well then the bigger point is why that did not lead to political action in the Western countries. However, the author feels the need to go on spending an awful lot of space on explaining the atrocities committed by the Nazis, and how they could be right about smoking. For all the bad things the Nazis did, I didn't buy this book to read about that, and only a fool would think of a country as always wrong or always right.

These digressions take away focus from what is an important point - how powerful financial interests have long bought influence with corrupt politicians - all over the world - working against public health.

Thus, if the book was 2-300 pages shorter, then it probably would have been much more powerful. As it is, it is a chore to finish. Sad, since the subject matter is very important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read in years!
This book is just amazing. I met Devra Davis when she came to speak to my Environmental Biology class at Kutztown University while I was studying biology. Her lecture got my attention and ever since that day I wanted to read her book. Since graduating, I have had time to start reading again for fun and this was the first book I've opened up. It really opens your eyes to things that never even crossed your mind before. It also forces you to take a second look at how you live, and also big corporations and the government. I believe this book has made me more driven to pursue a career in environmental science and also want to lead a healthier lifestyle. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in this sort of thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary research, excellent writing, powerful message
The best tool for health is good information put into practice - and Devra Davis has put together in one place a wealth of thought-provoking data that gives you and I more of what we need to make wise choices.

Too many of us place too much trust in corporations trying to sell us something, and not enough in our ability to push corporations to change what they're doing.

After watching what lengths the tobacco companies went to - and still go to - in order to profit through deception, Americans ought to be more skeptical about what other corporations tell us about the safety and benefits of their products.

In The Secret History of the War on Cancer, Davis brings up the excellent question of why we as a nation spend so much time and money trying to treat and cure cancer, and virtually ignore figuring out how to prevent it in the first place. What she reveals about the connections between businesses, charitable organizations, and politicians is an undeniable web that puts money and power over the health of the public. What I learned about Donald Rumsfeld's role in the history of aspartame (see pages 419 to 426) caused me to quit drinking any diet soda with it that same day.

Davis provides thoroughly researched details of the history of the identification of cancer, and shocking information on what has been done over time with what scientists have learned.

I found the central plot of The Secret History of the War on Cancer more gripping than any novel - because the corporate/government/medical decision to focus on treatment rather than finding the causes and working on prevention impacts me, my family, friends, neighbors, and everyone around the world who either develops cancer themselves or knows and loves someone who does.

Until reading Davis' book I had no idea that at one point the annual Pap smear I undergo was such a source of controversy in the medical field.Private insurance companies wanted only medical doctors to do the testing, not unlicensed, and therefore less expensive, staff.Surgeons saw Pap smears as a direct threat to the number of uterine biopsies they would do. As I read in today's newspapers about modern day arguments over "traditional" colonoscopies vs. swallowing a tiny camera, and the huge debate in England over whether mammograms are worthwhile - it is easy to see the pattern repeating. One person's health is another person's empty waiting room.

Davis lays out jaw-dropping cases involving industrial pollution, asbestos, artificial sweeteners, workplace chemicals - all clearly organized and solidly researched.

She has made me a much more careful consumer of products - and of news. In July 2009 the FDA admitted that they removed Dr. Sanjay Kaul of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from a drug advisory committee after receiving a complaint from the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.Eli Lilly representatives weren't pleased with Kaul's "independent analyses" of a clinical trial involving their product.(FDA Wrong to "Disinvite" Sanjay Kaul From Prasugrel Panel, Agency Tells Congressman; July 14, 2009,[...])

Because of Davis's work, I pay more attention to what I hear, and I make efforts to be a more critical thinker, gathering more information and working through things logically rather than simply accepting what I'm told to accept. How many Americans have asked their congressional representatives why the FDA has been given the authority to regulate tobacco products, but has been forbidden to ban them?

Personally, I think it would be very interesting to hear all the different responses, even though we've already been provided with the real answer - in Davis' book, and in the court case decided 5 to 4 by the Supreme Court in 2000, which said the FDA didn't have the authority to regulate tobacco products.Page 2 of the decision from "Food and Drug Administration et al. v. Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. et al.," says:"[the FDA's] express policy is to protect commerce and the national economy while informing consumers about any adverse health effects." Justice Breyer, who wrote the opinion for the 4 dissenters, noted at the time, "The upshot is that the Court today holds that a regulatory statute aimed at unsafe drugs and devices does not authorize regulation of a drug (nicotine) and a device (a cigarette) that the Court itself finds unsafe. .. The majority's conclusion is counter-intuitive. .. Consequently, I dissent."

Note that in 2009 - despite the new regulatory powers given - the FDA still cannot regulate nicotine to the point of banning it to protect the health of Americans.

Read Davis' book, and among everything you will learn about cancer and U.S. businesses, the message that it is not only the FDA whose "express policy is to protect commerce and the national economy" becomes crystal clear. We need to be more vigilant on our own behalf for the good of our health, and Devra Davis' book helps us do that. ... Really lifts your spirits and makes you feel more connected with others who are enduring the same journey. It's also a good book to pick up and put down (in case your not feeling up to a continuous read)...Warning!Can cause spontaneous smiles.

4-0 out of 5 stars First smile after my cancer diagnosis:)
This book brought me my first smile after my diagnosis of DLBC lymphoma.I read it while on a trip through Eastern PA, and while I may not subscribe to all her ideas, I couldnt help but see her point of view and enjoy her candid humor.I did find her website to be the best I have ever found for any type of cancer, & I highly recommend it.This is not the book if you believe in passive heathcare practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something for the Under 40 Cancer Patients
This book clearly defines the difference between most younger and older cancer patients, particularly in the area of language.Since I'm in the (much) older group, the title turned me off, but I read it on the recommendation of a friend.Once past the language, I found the book loaded with information and wit. While I don't agree with all her recommendations, she thought of many things that never entered my mind when I was diagnosed. She refuses to be a victim, but continues on in her determined, proactive way.Good for her!!We need more written for this unfortunately growing group of women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome!
Great book! I bought this book for a very special friend who happens to have cancer. She loved it and it gave her hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Crazy Sexy Cancer Survivor
I saw a short clip of this book on the today program. I am a Certified Holistic Educator and I thought what a wonderful zesty way to present and help people who are on a cancer track. I read it first before passing it along, and I feel anyone could benefit from the wit and wisdom there in.
I love this book.

Product Description
Cancer Ward examines the relationship of a group of people in the cancer ward of a provincial Soviet hospital in 1955, two years after Stalin's death. We see them under normal circumstances, and also reexamined at the eleventh hour of illness. Together they represent a remarkable cross-section of contemporary Russian characters and attitudes. The experiences of the central character, Oleg Kostoglotov, closely reflect the author's own: Solzhenitsyn himself became a patient in a cancer ward in the mid-1950s, on his release from a labor camp, and later recovered. Translated by Nicholas Bethell and David Burg.

4-0 out of 5 stars cancer, then and now
Very interesting. Good description of cancer therapy, which hasn't changed much since the '50's.Well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed
As with the opening "Arrest" chapter of Gulag Archipelago, and the start of The First Circle, so with Cancer Ward: the reader shares the protagonist's horror as he is yanked from all he knows and flung into a hellish and alien environment, a madhouse where he lands among residents, many terrified like himself, many old-timers who seem to know no other life but that of getting shoved around like cattle. I read this first in German, in which I am NOT proficient, yet the sense of panic came through loud and clear. Solzhenitsyn is a real-life, modern-day Ishmael, one who escaped alone not merely to tell us but to show us , to make us feel the horror of life interrupted, then turned into a living Hell created by a state gone mad," like a blind red rhinoceros[quoth Chad Walsh] ", turning life into a lethal obstacle course known to most of us in the West only from nightmares and Stephen King. Comfortable in our lives, we read books like Roots and Sacred Hunger, and The Pawnbroker, and Cancer War, and come away changed, wiser and sadder most likely, certainly more wary and vigilant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book
Okay, so I should probably hold off on writing a review until I've actually finished the book. However, I picked Cancer Ward up a day or so ago and I am finding it to be a fantastic read. I'm actually bringing it with me as reading material on my upcoming plane flight to my honeymoon destination--now, isn't that romantic? Well, perhaps not...but it really is that good. I'll leave the plot summary and character commentary to others--I just want to say this is a darn good read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Reading
The reason i call this "delicious," is because the writing is so fantastic, wonderful, beautiful, awesome... that you can feel, taste, smell, see everything you are reading.Reading a book like this makes you feel blessed that you HAVE EYES.

I'm an AVID reader, and this book is really special.the only reason i couldnt give it the full amount of Stars is because of the names in the story...ugh!Maybe it's because of my age or meds i'm on, but with the Russian names being two names, and then also some kind of first name... i was very confused.I wish the author or translator could have just used ONE name for each character... and stuck with it.I know that's not how it's done - lol - but it would have made it so much easier for me to follow the story.I had to keep going back to try to figure out who was who, with which illness. It was well worth it, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solzehnitsyn masters fiction, as he mastered non-fiction in Gulag Archipellago
Is there anything worse than living in Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union? ...unfortunately the author learned the answer to this question is: "living in Joseph Stalin's Soviet Union with cancer". I'm not a fan of medical dramas, but it would be unfair to pigeonhole The Cancer Ward as strictly a medical drama. It is much more an exploration of the lives of the different men who inhabit a 1950's era Soviet oncology ward. The men come from a mix of cultural, ethnic, and social-status backgrounds, and at times the author does use them to advantage for commentary on elements in Soviet life, but Solzhenitzen never allows the social commentary to overpower his handling of the characters. He is a cancer survivor too, and he draws heavily from his own experience. The book is at its best when showing how cancer recasts one's priorities, particularly the last several chapters, which follow Oleg after his discharge from the cancer ward. It is here that Solzhenitsen so artistically renders the world transformed through the eyes of a cancer patient.
This book is not like Gulag Archipellago, but is wonderful in its own, much more personal way. The fact that Solzhenitsyn produced both of these works is a testiment to his craftmanship as both a storyteller and a first-person historian. ... Read more

Conventional treatment protocols are simply not working-and they may even be harmful. In this book Dr. John Lee, an internationally renowned expert in natural hormones, teams up with breast cancer researcher Dr. David Zava to present a revolutionary hormone balance program to reduce your risk of breast cancer and help eliminate a recurrence if you already have the disease. Learn about: * Conventional HRT and ERT-how synthetic hormones may trigger cancer * The current breast cancer drugs that may hurt as much as they help-and why doctors use them anyway * Risk factors for breast cancer-including the long-term dangers of birth control pills * The unsettling truth about mammograms and radiation therapy * The remarkably protective benefits of natural hormones * The potential dangers in our homes, our water, and food. With its revolutionary program featuring natural progesterone, this book offers a progressive approach to hormone balance that is both eye-opening and empowering.Amazon.com Review
An informative and absorbing read for both medical practitioners and their patients, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Breast Cancer takes aim at "the breast cancer industry" with a barrage of thought-provoking ammunition.

The book is equal parts criticism and suggestion. Current health treatments, including HRT, receive serious condemnation, and authors John Lee and David Zava carefully provide plenty of medical research to back up claims that excessive estrogen is a main source of cancer-causing irregularities. While the names of all the different natural and synthetic hormones can get overwhelming for the lay reader, with perseverance your new vocabulary of terms like androstenedione, estradiol, and cortisol will enable you to communicate more effectively with your doctors. The authors credit these hormones not just with a role in cancer, but with culpability for everything from insomnia and acne to fatigue and migraines. A full chapter extols the virtues of natural progesterone cream, and urges women to order their own saliva tests for proper evaluation of their hormone levels.

Diet and exercise recommendations are simple, outlining reasons to limit fats, sugars, and meats while increasing vegetables and adding a multivitamin. These recommendations extend to adolescents and urge getting off the couch and beginning a gentle exercise program to women of all ages and in each stage of life. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

If you are a breast cancer patient, or someone you know has breast cancer, READ THIS BOOK!Although the information is slightly dated (first published in 2003 before the release of aromitase inhibitors), this book definitely provides important insight into the underlying biological reasons that MAY be the cause and/or promoters of breast cancer in some women.Fascinating read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Lee was ahead of his time
Love this book. Lots of easy to understand information. Dr. Lee was in the forefront of many doctors with his ideas. Too bad most doctors just want to hand out pills rather than try to help women. I have purchased other books by Dr. Lee as well and they are all great.

Product Description

Bestselling author Barbara Delinsky, whose life has been shaped by her mother's breast cancer as well as her own, creates with this book exactly the resource she wished she had for herself during her treatment: one that is filled with the helpful tips -- both practical and inspiring -- that only the women who have already been there can tell us about. Here, readers can find answers to such questions as: Are there certain foods that really satisfy on treatment days? How do I address my surgery with my coworkers? Will I still feel feminine? And what about a sex life? Warm and reassuring, Uplift arms readers with the various means by which countless women diagnosed with breast cancer have faced their fears, survived their illness, and bravely gotten on with life and love, career and family.

All of the author's proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to breast cancer research.Amazon.com Review
A book as uplifting as the disease it discusses is tragic, Uplift is an inspiring collection of voices of breast cancer survivors. Barbara Delinsky, author of The Woman Next Door and other novels, and herself a survivor of breast cancer, presents inspirational snippets from more than 300 women sharing breast cancer tips and experiences. Reading this book is like listening to the friendly hubbub of a crowd of women all offering advice and comments. They share practical tips about comfortable clothing after mastectomy, treatments for radiation burns, nausea remedies, wigs, advice for friends, and more. They share stories of supportive husbands, boyfriends, and family members who continue to love them. "I will love you till the day I die, whether you have one breast or none," says one husband. "Breasts don't laugh, smile, share brilliance, or give kindness," says another man. Every experience is positive and supportive, but not gushy. The humor chapter will make you laugh aloud.

Delinsky envisioned this book as "the support group that I had never joined but could have used, the one that offered all the practical little secrets of survival that have nothing to do with doctors, machines, or drugs and everything to do with women helping women." She succeeds. (Delinsky is donating all her earnings on this book to breast cancer research.) --Joan Price ... Read more

The book incorporates extensive explanation of the theory with scientific research and the exact practice of the therapy, as well as a presentation of fifty documented case histories. 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book...
Although some parts of this book may be difficult to read, its an excellent book.I found some very interesting pieces of information in this book that apply to improving your health with or without cancer. The content of this book is old, but the information is still current today. The type of research Max Gerson did, is not done today....Medical research today is only interested in inventing the next pill, not addressing the root cause of health problems. One interesting claim in this book is that the pancreas produces enzymes that fight disease and illness.Eating large amounts of meat loads down the pancreas and limits its capacity to fight illness. This book and others have convinced me that we eat too much meat today.I have changed my diet to mostly vegetarian, eating meat only at 1 meal per day.I find parallels with the diet regemin in this book to other books such as:Norman Walker's juicing book, Herbert Shelton's books, and Weston A Price's book on nutrition and physical degeneration. It also ties in well with the concept of Acid Alkaline Balance. If you're serious about your health, whether you are sick or not, I highly recommend this book.It adds more pieces to the puzzle.I found amazing pieces of information in this book that I've seen nowhere else.If I had cancer, I would follow their regemin to the letter OR attempt a prolonged fast per Herbert Shelton's book... the choice would depend on the type of cancer.I don't think you can say any treatment works in 100% of the cases, but this seems way more appropriate than the conventional approach to cancer....The conventional approach has you kill your body with poisons while also killing the cancer... I find that approach highly risky.Even if a person were to go the conventional route with chemotherapy, I think you would benefit highly from the nutritional advice in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why did America keep this from us?
If you want to understand the nature on how to cure "incurable dieases" then read this definately. Moderate medicine did not and would not help me. The first week of doing the diet therapy some symptoms that I've had for years all of a sudden started to dissappear. The doctors could not tell me whats happening to me but that I should stop it immediately. If you don't have the money to do the whole therapy at least by the book and read it. You could be saving your life if not someone else's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Gerson's Greatest Work!
This material is the BEST Max Gerson material for the medical professional or anyone else who wants documentation of The Gerson Therapy and how it helps the body to heal cancer and other chronic diseases.

This book is Dr. Gerson's great work, written just before he died by cynide poisoning. When he died he was working on his second book which would have been the "results of one hundred (100) cases in the cure of advanced cancer". Sadly this is the only book of Max Gerson, MD, that was published before his death. You can read more extensively about Dr. Gerson's life in Dr. Max Gerson: Healing the Hopeless.

If you are interested in trying the Gerson therapy then you will want the companion workbook guide called the Gerson Therapy Handbook: Companion workbook to A Cancer Therapy- Results of Fifty Cases. Another option is to get the most up to date and latest Gerson work called Healing the Gerson Way: Defeating Cancer and Other Chronic Diseases.

In this record you can read about 50 patients cured of advanced cancer. The actual cases cover a 138 pages in this book and read like this: adenocarcinoma of sigmoid colon, inoperable cervix carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the kidney, ureter and bladder, spongioblastoma, pituitary tumor, testicle terratoma or embryonal cell carcinoma, melanosarcoma, neurogenic fibrosarcoma, osteofibrosarcoma, lymphosarcoma, myosarcoma, Paget bone disease, carcinoma of the thyroid, breast carcinoma with diffuse axillary lymph node involvement, basal cell carcinoma, prostate carcinoma with metastases in the lumbar spine, and cancers of the rectum, lung lobe, lip, foot, spinal cord, thalamus, brain, etc. The material is amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Surprising
I was a little skeptical at first but now I am trying to incorporate the therapy into my lifestyle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating healthy rewards

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have reading!
This book is a "must have" for anyone diagnosed or caring for someone who is diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Even though I have already had the surgery I found the book to be very helpful when discussing the disease with friends and colleagues. It takes a lot of soul searching to come up with the right course of treatment to follow. The many different experiences related here could make a difference in the way you feel or reassure you that you are on the right track. I found the detail to be very true to my experience and I only wish I had this book 4 years ago when I was diagnosed.
The one thing that I brought away from my reading was that I was not alone, and that was the major thought in my mind when the call came in from my Urologist! I urge anyone who has or supports someone who has prostate cancer to read this book!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE....

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't fall for this con!
My father-in-law sells Rife machines, and uses them to "treat" people. When my wife (his own daughter) was diagnosed with breast cancer 8 years ago he convinced her to forgo conventional treatment for several months and instead use the Rife machine he brought her, along with this book describing this "Miracle Cancer Cure" suppressed" by the government and mainstream medical. My wife went through his training and used the machine faithfully. Neither she, I, nor the team of medical professionals noticed ANY positive difference with the Rife machine. If anything, here original lump doubled in size while she was wasting time using the machine. She should have had her surgery as soon as she was diagnosed. After 16 surgeries, 2 bouts of chemo, and one bout of radiation therapy she progressively got worse. In the end the cancer took her from me. I know each case is different, but I am bitter about my wife not starting conventional treatment sooner. It may not have made a difference in the end but we may have had a few more years together. Please, watch out for the quack cures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Suppressed technology
The history of not just a therapy for cancer, but also of the invention of the superior technology of the so-called dark field microscope which was also invented by Royal Rife. I was taking conventional therapy for cancer but I added the Rife device which can be found on the internet with no trouble at all, and I attribute my recovery to the device. This book deals with the way Big Pharma suppresses its competition. It's all documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal Experience
My grandma(83) was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Both of Grandma's sisters died of ovarian cancer and we are fairly certain that we have a genetic disposition to the disease. Her cancer was discovered because she was feeling overwhelmingly tired and was sleeping all the time. My brother and his wife went to see her and said that she looked just terrible. The color of her skin looked faded and gray. The doctor observed that the tumor was very large and was the reason for her belly being so swollen. Blood tests revealed that her CA-125 level was 1400. The doctor gave her a month to live.

My uncle gave us, "The cancer cure that worked".

It has been widely known within certain circles, but not formally recognized that nurses who have worked in Leukemia wards have themselves died of Leukemia. Such was the case with my mother's cousin who was a Leukemia ward nurse. She died nine months after her triplets were born. The pregnancy was such a strain on her system the Leukemia virus finally got a foothold and took her.

It HAS been generally recognized that a certain cervical cancer is caused by a virus.

With his discovery that each kind cancer is caused by a corresponding virus, Rife developed the technology to kill the virus using frequency. Much like a wine glass may be shattered if exposed to the correct frequency the viruses were killed when exposed to their corresponding frequencies. Everything has a rate at which it naturally vibrates. When you vibrate something at this natural rate (or frequency) it responds strongly.

I found a video online of paramecium filmed under a microscope while being exposed to the Rife frequency. There were about 15 on the screen all of which were moving around and healthy. Then when exposed to their resonant frequency they began to vibrate and then burst on the edge and spill all of their contents into the fluid they were occupying.

My uncle spent about a week finding and programming his Rife machine to the ovarian cancer frequency. Grandma got Rife treatments several times a day and one chemo treatment before the doctor took her CA-125 levels again. They had dropped to 700. I think the doctor was surprised by the extremely positive response, except he didn't know that she was getting any other treatment. After the second chemo and continued daily treatments with the Rife machine Grandma's CA-125 levels dropped to 156. With the treatments, she started feeling better and was able to eat more and got her color back. She didn't believe that the chemo was doing any good so she told the doctor she wouldn't do any more chemo treatments unless she had her CA-125 measured again. The doctor was annoyed because he knew the level would be higher since she hadn't had any chemo treatment since her last lab tests, but agreed to do the tests anyway. The CA-125 level came back at 46. For us that proved that the chemo was not lowering the cancer levels but the Rife machine was.

What is especially interesting is that after the third blood test the doctor said that the levels for colon cancer were rising. He was baffled to explain why the chemo was making the ovarian cancer levels drop so significantly but the colon cancer levels were rising. We expressed frustration that the doctor had not told us about the colon cancer. Considering that the doctor originally expected Grandma to live only a month given the advanced state of her ovarian cancer, I'm sure that mentioning that she had an early stage of colon cancer as well would have been pointless.

For us it was an even greater confirmation that the Rife machine was working since it had been programmed to the ovarian cancer frequencies and not colon cancer.

We got in contact with a man who has been promoting Royal Rife's work and there is a newer Rife machine (F-scan) that detects viruses as well. Kind of like a sonar detects fish in a fishing hole. Mom got the newer machine, which would by default address the colon cancer. Grandma had over 50 hits and it takes about 2 hours to go through 2 minutes of treatment for each hit. Not surprisingly, to us anyway, the colon cancer levels started dropping as her treatment with the F-scan continued. The doctor seemed annoyed with the astounding progress. It seems counter-intuitive, but each chemo treatment is several thousand dollars. This particular doctor has had cancer patients undergoing chemo for several years... her recovery, despite his chemo, means lost revenue for him.

Laurence Welk came on a few days into the newer treatment and Grandma started doing the jitterbug in the living room. I'd say it was a miraculous change to go from "you have a month to live" to doing the jitterbug in your living room.

Were it not such a sensitive issue, Barry Lynes would have received the Pullitzer Prize for it, for it is an outstanding piece of journalistic research. It was written in one long breath of three weeks. On the cover is written and rightly so: "A fascinating account", "Masterpiece of journalism", "This book is superb". It is foremost about the mechanism of suppression. It is about the deontology of great and powerful institutions and therefore a lesson in political history. Great institutions are always governed by the human condition: pride, ambtion, power, fear, the will to dominate, human weakness, outright stupidity, but foremost greed, greed for MONEY. We tend to think that the medical establishment is there to serve humankind. But no, it is an industry like any other, whose aim is to make a profit. Cancer in the U.S. is a 250 billion industry, which indeed is much, much money. Though some people are outside the herd, they are not the ones who determine the course of things. A final question. The Rife cure, does it work? I know it does. And so this book needs the largest audience possible. Give it to your friends! ... Read more

Product Description
Cancer can now be cured, not only the early stages, but also advanced cancer, stages four and five, including imminent death. We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure. We think of remission as the only possiblity. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. this is possible because the true cause of cancer has been found. The Cause of the malignancy is explained in the earlier book, The Cure For All Cancers. But removing the malignancy left behind the tumors as they were, prior to the malignant development. So, eliminating tumors became the focus of additional research, and is the subject of this book. The 21 Day Program described in this book does both. Once you win this battle, even advanced cancer can be cured. The success rate for advanced cancer is about 95%. So you can count on this method, not merely hope it will work for you. It is a total approach that not only shrinks tumors, but also normalizes your blood chemistry, lowers your cancer markers, and returns your health. The small failure rate (5%) is due to clinical emergencies that beset the advanced cancer sufferer. However, if you combine the advice in this book with access to hospital care, even hopeless patients can gain the time necessary to become well again. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars If I had cure for cancer I would be the most popular person on the planet.
Where are the accolades?

Where are the people she saved? The reviews of total and udder thankfulness for their lives? The wildfire 1st hand information... of you tell 6 friends and they tell six friends and within days it goes viral and millions are being saved?

I would be the most grateful person on the planet. Escaping a certain and terrifying death I might be appreciative and tell all your friends and others to. so where are all the accolades? My family would send her flowers. This book and info would spread like wildfire.

Some people who happened to go into remission as sometimes happens would think the book did it since the timing would seem not to be coincidental especially to the new age type people. BUT there are not even any of these people who believe anything.

I canceled my order for the book as soon as I gave this a little consideration.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was a gift for someone who didn't receave it for 8 weeks.
it was a gift and I haven't heard from the receiver I don't even know if she received it. every time I ask the answer is no not yet. So really I shouldn't even review just that I want to get the review out of the way. I guess it is the post office fault and has nothing to do with the book. but people should know upgrade how it is sent or it will take 8 weeks.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cure for all Advanced Cancer
Found it very informal information that I am using for my wife in the fight for her life! The FDA and big Government will lie to you and are not interested in cures. But Dr. Clark is on the right path. I strongly urge anyone looking for ways to stop this terrible desiese they will need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life alternatives
Why would you succumb to chemo and surgery if you knew it wouldn't save you? It will rob you of quality of life. Prevention is the key. Living a clean life when possible and cleansing to erridicate the enviromental toxins out of your control. Sure it works but you cant' live reckelssly and expect a miracle to save you. You have to save yourself with prevention. Still no guarantees either, but suffering is not an option I would ever choose. Let Medicine be thy food and food they medicine. Hippocrates I believe. Corn dogs and beer, nor perfumes and drugs fits into that catagory. We are killing ourselves in the name of greed and profit. I wish I could take my own advice as I have food addictions of my own.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please beware! Clark has ruined lives and is a fraudulent snake oil saleslady
I read "The Cure for All Diseases." Her claim that parasites are behind all diseases sounded plausible to me. (My husband has Crohn's disease, and just like ulcers, doctors have now discovered that Crohn's is also caused by an autoimmune response to a certain intestinal bacteria; this didn't sound so different.)

But some of the book didn't make sense and some was contradictory. So I decided to do some independent research using objective sources to find out more about Clark. What I found was absolutely frightening. Her health claims and case histories are fraudulent. Her treatment facilities are inhumane and have cost people precious time, money and health and in some cases even their very lives. She has had to run from the law, from Indiana to California and Mexico.

Please do some research before accepting her teachings or using any of her products or services. Wikipedia has links, articles and details regarding all of her activities and why her health claims are completely bogus. Another comprehensive site is Quackwatch org, which has ongoing lawsuits from and against Clark and her son. And just Googling her will reveal lots of information, testimonies, and legal documentation.

UPDATE: Clark died in 9/09 of cancer. ... Read more

This book is easy to read with up to date information. It gives practical advice for living with and preventing cancer.I have read several other books on the topic and found myself becoming confused by some of the scientific data.No confusion here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Before you drink the "kool-aid" read below....
(This is actually a review obtained from the [...] blog written by Dr Harriet Hall)...

In the interests of fairness and intellectual honesty, I've forced myself to read a lot of really bad books. The True Believer tells me his guru's book is the Real Stuff. He tells me I have a closed mind and won't look at anything outside establishment dogma, and if I only read the book and understood Dr. Quack's evidence and arguments, I would be a True Believer too. I have tried, really I have. I've given the Dr. Quacks every chance to convert me, and I've hoped to learn something new, but I'm always disappointed. I've come to the point that I feel like I'm reading the same book over and over: it is always a mixture of real science, pseudoscience, and speculation, based on cherry-picked evidence and argued with the same logical fallacies.

I recently got hooked into reading another one by a correspondent who had called me an "ignorant relic" for writing a "grossly ignorant article" about alternative medicine. I suggested he read R. Barker Bausell's book Snake Oil Science and a couple of others, which he promised to do. Then he said, "If I am willing to buy three books that you have suggested and read them and you are not willing to read what I have suggested, then that pretty much says all that needs to be said."

I was willing, even though the very title of the book suggested that its message was incompatible with the scientific evidence as I know it: How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine. The authors are big names in naturopathic and herbal medicine: Michael Murray, Tim Birdsall, Joseph Pizzorno, and Paul Riley. It's nowhere near as bad as some of the bad books I've read, but it is a good example of the genre and I'll use it to illustrate why I call them bad.

It offers "an arsenal of disease-fighting tools for prevention, treatment, and coping with side effects" (Yes, it offers tools; but do those tools work?) And it promises to "change your internal environment so cancer can't survive." (Wow! If it could really do that, every oncologist in the world would enthusiastically adopt these methods and the authors would be eligible for a Nobel prize.)

Its coverage of cancer risk factors and screening tests is reasonable, and it doesn't discourage conventional cancer treatment. It recommends conventional preventive measures like exercise, weight control, and healthy diet, and points out the need for extra attention to good nutrition during cancer treatment. It doesn't descend to the level of Andrew Weil's promotion of "stoned thinking" and intuition as a source of knowledge. It appears to be grounded in science and its recommendations are evidence-based. The problem is that it accepts evidence of exceedingly poor quality, and it accepts evidence that has been superseded by other contradictory evidence (which it conveniently fails to acknowledge).

A trivial example, but one that illustrates their loose approach: they tell us acupuncture dates back 5000 years to The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, attributed to the emperor Huang Ti in 2697 BC. They don't mention that modern scholars have determined that the book was written much later, probably in the second century BC. The older date enhances their claim that

TCM [Traditional Chinese Medicine] has been practiced for millennia, longer than any other medical system. There must be something valuable in it! [Logical fallacy]

They fully accept the claims of TCM. They fail to mention that the so-called acupuncture meridians have never been detected, and they speak of the mythical qi as if it were as real as blood pressure. They accept the totally unsubstantiated concept of "energy medicine." They think there is no fundamental clash between Western medicine and TCM, that just as light can exist as particles or waves, health problems can affect both chemical balance and energy balance. [false analogy]

They state

External hydrotherapy treatments have been shown to produce profound effects on immune function. In particular, applications of hot water have been shown to boost the number and activity of natural killer cells - key white blood cells in the fight against cancer.

As a reference, they cite this study. This was a preliminary study with only 10 subjects and no controls, and the number of NK cells only increased in 5 patients. A search of PubMed yielded only one other study of hydrotherapy and immune function, this one also uncontrolled and involving only 11 subjects.

You would have to put on the strongest rose-colored glasses to interpret these two questionable studies as evidence of "profound effects." And that is exactly what these authors do throughout the book. Their rose-colored glasses over-interpret the significance of every study that supports their bias while they filter out any contradictory information.

They state that faith and the power of prayer have been "validated by several rigorous scientific studies" showing that prayer affects everything from the mutation rate of bacteria to the size of tumors. This is simply not true. Claims for the medical efficacy of prayer have been repeatedly and thoroughly debunked. Yet these authors say,

In our opinion, given the scientific support of prayer's beneficial effects, not praying for the best possible outcome may be the equivalent of deliberately withholding an effective drug or a surgical procedure.

They stop short of advising us which God to pray to.

For patients undergoing surgery, they say "It is very important to use gotu kola to prevent the formation of adhesions." They say it has "demonstrated impressive clinical results in promoting wound repair." The Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database, after reviewing all the published studies on gotu kola, concluded that it is "possibly effective" when used topically for wound healing and prevention of keloids, and "possibly safe." I couldn't find a shred of evidence anywhere that it can prevent the formation of adhesions internally. As far as I can tell, the authors just made that up, extrapolating from the idea of wound healing.

For cancer prevention, they recommend everyone take 17 supplemental vitamins, 14 supplemental minerals, flavonoids, daily green drinks (green tea, dehydrated barley grass, wheat grass, chlorella, spirulina), probiotics, fish oil supplements, and for extra protection against specific cancers, curcumin, quercetin, ground flaxseed oil, lycopene, etc. The evidence to support these recommendations is sketchy at best (I'm trying really hard to say this politely).

I'll stop with these few examples. It would take a book twice as long as theirs to properly critique all their questionable statements.

This book is a strange mixture. It contains a lot of good science and good advice, but it also contains statements that are clearly false, and much of it consists of unjustified extrapolations from preclinical or preliminary studies. It unwisely makes clinical recommendations for the entire human population on the basis of a few animal or in vitro studies.

It epitomizes the difference between "evidence-based" and true science-based medicine. It is easy to find studies that serve as "evidence" for any viewpoint, but the true scientist weighs those against other contradictory studies, assesses the study design and the quality of evidence, asks if the data have been replicated elsewhere, looks at prior plausibility and compatibility with other scientific knowledge, and tries to judge what the entire body of scientific evidence means. As Ioannidis showed in his landmark article, most published studies are wrong.

The book has the appearance of science and authority and it cites lots of references. It is written to impress the general public, and I'm sure it sounds very convincing to someone who is not well versed in the subjects covered. But its defects are obvious to anyone who truly understands the scientific method. The authors have an obvious bias; they are not objective, some of the things they say are demonstrably false, and the book is not a reliable source of information or advice.

There are two kinds of science book: one aims to educate the public by explaining the current state of evidence and the consensus of the scientific community. The other has an agenda: it uses (and mis-uses) science to persuade readers to believe something that the authors believe but that the scientific community as a whole has rejected. I have learned to tell them apart at a glance. Unfortunately, the general reader hasn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential but Expensive
It's great to find a book like this if you are battling cancer. I have used much of the information in my fight. I just wish the health care industry would get it together enough to help people with the high costs of these complementary medicines! After getting a call from the insurance company's collection agency it's hard to find the money for complementary medicine that has to come 100% out of pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for anyone concerned about his/her health
Cancer can strike anyone. This book is easy to read and has a tremendous amount of health tips for cancer prevention and treatment methods that don't involve poisonous chemotherapy and radiation burning. There are also chapters on how to naturally support your body during traditional treatment i.e. surgery, chemo, radiation.
Prevention is far better than having to treat the disease itself. Written in layman's terms. Especially good if you have a family history of cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A brave and empowering story
Sitcom star Fran Drescher has written a heart-felt book about her experience with uterine cancer from her first suspicions that something was wrong, through the tests and the waiting, and finally the terrifying diagnosis and life-saving treatment.

On the audio book, her distinctive voice reveals the horror of it all, punctuated often by her unique dry humor. Her story is candid and above all, informative and helpful. She had to go to nine doctors before she was properly diagnosed and she encourages her readers to trust their insticts and demand answers so necessary treatment can be done in time.

The audio book is only three hours long and is thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring. While cancer is the central theme, she also discusses her readjustment to single life after her long marriage and the loving support she received from family and friends. Heartily recommended.

I read this book on a whim and then I couldn't put it down.I love her and I love her writing style.Fran, you should definitely write more books.Fiction, non-fiction....just start writing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fran Drescher is Unbelievably Brave
First off the book was in excellent condition and I recieved it very quickly. The book it's self was wonderful, it tells you how Fran Drescher had to go through 2 1/2 years of painful and scary symptoms and 8 doctors before she was diagnosed with uterine cancer. When finally diagnosed, she fought and beat uterine cancer but not before having to get a full hysterectomy. She tells how she goes on today to be a woman's cancer advocate to teach women to listen to their bodies and get tested, because early detection is the key to fighting it. She was so truthful about her experiences and so entertaining, I couldn't put the book down and finished in a day and a half. Which is really fast for me considering I have 3 boys to take care of all day. Any available second I got I was reading it. When I finished it I felt more educated about woman's cancer, amazed at what she had went through and sad that she doesn't have a 3rd book for me to read. I would recommend this book to all my friends and have already started passing it around to family members and they loved it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Never be passive when it comes to your health."
I've never had cancer, but, just before age 22, I developed a rare illness - minocycline-induced pseudotumor cerebri. It lasted for several months and I have never felt worse. The symptoms were hard to describe and I didn't always appear (visibly) to be ill. It was a very difficult time for me.

It was caused by a medicine prescribed by my dermatologist. It was supposed to clear up my skin. I was NOT supposed to make me sick. In fact, the doctor didn't even mention that there were ANY possible "side effects." He was the doctor. I was just 21 and wanted clear skin. - It was inconceivable to me that a medicine for something so simple could possibly be dangerous.

I later learned, through my own research, that I was predisposed to be more likely to be affected by it due to my weight and other factors. (While I did weigh more than my ideal weight, I was not obese.)

This book gives an interesting perspective and makes me more determined than ever to take charge of my health and be my own advocate. Kudos to Fran for sharing what she learned and making us all more aware.

there is many other great remedies in the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some errors.
Dr. Breuss' basis for his belief in this cure and how he formulated it are pretty unclear.I find his narratives rambling.I am intrigued by his claim of 40,00 success stories using his method but have my grave doubts about the validity due to his unsupported statements and a few obvious errors. One error can be fourn in his explanation of the use of Sage Tea which he says is a powerful healing agent known as far back as the Romans.he says that to use it internally, one must boil the sage for at least three minutes in water. This, he says, is to boil away the oils which should not be taken by drinking. He also says that the long boiling will bring out the ENZYMES in the herb.Huh??If you boil anything at 212 degrees for three minutes there are surely NO enzymes left. Maybe he had an unclear view of what enzymes are or maybe, as one health consultant told me, it is the result of a badly translated text from the German, I cannot know. But this much is clear, that for whatever reason I cannot also have confidence in the text within this book.So how can I rely on the instructions or the claims of cures?I am taking these writings in this book with a 'grain of salt' and using what I can of the juice formulas and the tea recommendations but i will have some reserve about my overall trust in the Breuss Cancer Cure. Too bad

Cancer Vixen: A True Story

When I read that this book was a true account of the author's experience with a cancer diagnosis, and that the author chose to do the book in a cartoon format, it intrigued me and I ordered it. After finishing the book, however, I did not feel that I fully understood the author's experience; that picturing her encounter with cancer with cartoons did not resonate with me as much as words would have. I learned from reading this book that I much prefer to read the words--apart from cartoon pictures--of a person's story. She did use words, of course, but it was not a flowing story of what happened, but rather a choppy mixture of cartoon pictures with words being spoken. If someone asked me exactly what she went through, I could not describe it.For myself, I prefer words, with some pictures or graphics occasionally inserted, but not a total story done in cartoons. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Revici, Gerson, & Budwig Were Brilliant
Revici is a must read for those who are searching for relief from any degenerative disease. Revici certainly garnered a lot of praise from from his peers.I know of no other doctor that was held in such high esteem.Yet the AMA/Pharma money mongers certainly tried everything to totally discredit him. Same for Gerson and Budwig.I've been curing myself of Advanced Prostate cancer for over a year, following Gerson and Budwig. Certainly Revici's method(s) would do so also, perhaps better, because they apparently rooted out the source and worked rather fast.My Doctor's are incredulous and tell me to keep doing whatever it is I'm doing.Seems they tell all people to do the same, who are curing themselves. Wonder if they teach them to say that in Med School? The book is well written and does not bash allopathic medicine. It is understandable by all, even though some of the tech talk may escape a few readers (including me). After reading this book, one will definitely have a much fuller view of medicine and their body.Perhaps more so than their doctor. There is no doubt that Revici's understandings and discoveries will have to be used in the future if humankind is to remain alive.
If I come to the point where I need additional help, I will certainly go to the Revici Clinic[...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Wake Up People
You would think that in the twenty-first century people would know better than to blindly trust the medical establishment that is making billions from keeping people sick. And yet, so many have bought into the paternal attitude of the AMA and the FDA. We no longer live in the Dark Ages when people like Galileo were persecuted for making scientific discoveries. It's time to wake up and start exploring and you will find the truth. This book is a good place to start.

The Doctor Who Cures Cancer is the well-written story of a brilliant and compassionate doctor who was able to cure cancer fifty years ago. His methods and the science behind them are thoroughly explored in the book. Then why are we still waging a war on cancer today--and losing? Simple. Follow the money. The medical establishment is making too much by torturing and mutilating cancer patients with chemo, radiation, and surgery. Think the FDA will protect you? No. They're the ones jailing and condemning people like Dr. Revici who cure cancer.

Get this book if you want to learn about how one doctor fought the system and cured people. But let it be just the beginning of opening your mind and raising your awareness about cancer and modern medicine. Read. Research. Question everything your doctor says--it's your body and you have a right to whatever treatment you choose for yourself.

(part 5) is a call to action as well as a clearly defined and timely reminder that organized medicine needs a wake-up call to successfully deal with disease...the other 4 parts of this book (Revici's life, discoveries, patients, and foes) focus more on Revici as a person (along with his travails and challenges) than on solutions to any current ailment a patient might have; however, many practical resources are given throughout this volume, including the name and address of the Revici Life-Science Center in Manhattan, as well as details about acidity-alkalinity and lipids research. The two appendices (chronology and illustrations) are extremely helpful in understanding Revici's theories. This is a must-read for a person who is undergoing Revici therapy and should be required reading for oncologists and immunologists everywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars We all need hope!
Thanks Amy for a great resource that I have given to many people in my congregation as they battle cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have if you or someone you know just has been diagnosed with cancer
Dr. Givler has not only the knowledge of a medical doctor, she has personally gone through a diagnosis and the treatment for cancer. When I first read this book, it was as a reviewer for several magazines. I have purchased many copies now to give to people and unfortunately, know there will be more as long as we have the dreaded disease of cancer. If you are facing a diagnosis of cancer, please think about getting this book--or get one for someone you know who needs it. It is warm without sappy sentiment, practical, and like having a trusted medical friend for the journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope in the Face of Cancer
This book was educational, inspirational, and very helpful.Since the author is a cancer survivor, she offers hope and encouragement from that perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for overwhelmed and newly diagnosed
I'm writing to tell you what comfort I received from reading your book.I read it the first time within two weeks of my husband's diagnosis and the start of chemotherapy.I have reread it again recently, and take it out when I need someone to reassure me God is in control, and to have faith.I often read sections to my husband that I feel will be of the most benefit to continue his incredibly strong belief he can beat it, no matter what the statistics say.

There is so much out there to read that I feel overwhelmed by all the information. However, very few books make you feel BETTER about this very "sucky" situation.Thank you to someone who really needed it, and appreciates it.

5-0 out of 5 stars All newly-diagnosed cancer patients should get this book!
This book is a fantastic resource for all cancer patients, but especially for newly-diagnosed cancer patients.Written by an MD who has cancer, it provides common sense guidance for many aspects of treating and living with cancer.I highly recommend this book for patients who have just been diagnosed.Read this book before you do anything! It is also valuable for cancer patients who have been diagnosed with a recurrence. An easy read, it is well worth the few dollars you will spend to own it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good information; interesting presentation.
This book was recommended by a friend who, like my husband, was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. Both of them really appreciated the information and the author's delivery. My husband feels that he gained a better understanding of the disease without being overwhelmed with lots of difficult to understand medical jargon.Reading the book also opened avenues of discussion for the pros and cons of different treatment options with his doctor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer I bought several books. The two most useful books were this one and Patrick Walsh's book 'Guide to Surviving PC'.The value in McHugh's book is that he had the advantage of being not only a urologist, but also a prostate cancer patient.Walsh's book is like the Bible for prostate cancer information. It's big and full of useful information.'The Decision' is a complimentary book to Walsh's.
Good luck with whatever procedure to you decide on.I choose surgery, and part of my decision was based on what I had learned from McHugh's book.If you're buying this book you are probably in a quandary as to what procedure to opt for. This book with be a big help in making that decision.Again all the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prostate Dancer
This book is very helpful in learning about prostate cancer.
Dr. McHugh has been a patient of this disease himself and knows the fears and anxieties of learing about one's own cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Decision" provides empowerment to men (and their wives)!!
First let me state that I have not been diagnosed with prostate cancer, yet!Over the last 15 years, since I was 50, I have experienced a roller coaster of PSA levels. The low numbers were still near or above 4 and the highs were above 8!These ups and downs have caused many hours of anxiety for me and my wife.During this emotional ride, I have had 4 prostate biopsies, all were negative!!My last PSA was high again and we are back to the anxiety and deciding on waiting until my next appointment in 6 months or having another biopsy just to be sure??Then during a routine visit with my primary care doctor I brought him up-to-date on my prostate adventure. He told me about Dr. McHugh's book about his own experience with prostate cancer. He suggested I read the book even though I had not been diagnosed with prostate cancer.I had read one other book on the subject sometime ago and thought it might be a good idea to read something new on the subject.

When I received the book and started reading, I could not put it down.It was such an easy read that it took me just 2 days to finish it!I was generally familiar with most of terms and topics from my own personnel experiences, but Dr. McHugh covered each step with just enough detail and in plain English that provides the reader with all the information and guidance necessary to make "The Decision"!

Fortunately, I don't have to make that decision, not yet anyway, but it did provide me withpeace-of-mind that if and when that time ever comes I will be able to make "The Decision" without any hesitation. The book provided me with all the information needed to feel empowered no matter what the outcome!

Dr. McHugh's humor, that he so eloquently disperses through-out the book, provided not only entertainment, but also relieved a lot of my current anxiety about my decision to undergo another biopsy. I would highly recommend this book to any man (and his wife) that has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, but also has some anxiety about high PSA levels.Thank you Dr. McHugh!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Been There, Had That!
My major life decision in October 2003 could have been made with better logic and less stress had this book, "The Decision," been available at the time. That was when my biopsy report confirmed I had prostate cancer.

Now having read Dr. McHugh's book and taking a retro-perspective of my treatment strategies, I am more confident than ever that my decision was consistent with both my wife's and my personal objectives for treatment outcomes. It is comforting to see that "The Decision" includes the wife's issues and concerns. After all this important decision has significant implications for both.

Dr. McHugh takes the reader on a journey though a difficult physiological and psychological health issue, with a writing style that offers ease of understanding, a clear exploration of treatment options and meaningful risk/reward analyses. All the pertinent anatomical data is there, along with rather humorous anecdotes relating to his personal experiences with management of the disease.

I consider this book a "must read" for any man who is faced with "what do I do now?" after being informed "You have prostate cancer.""The Decision" will provide a pathway that leads you to a fully informed status.

And Yes!The book is a real "page turner." ... Read more
