Editorial Review Product Description The first chapters provide the background to the clinical reasoning approach that informs the whole text, as well as an overview of therapeutic interventions. The subsequent chapters present clinical situations that therapists will encounter in the course of their work with individuals with cerebral palsy across the lifespan. Each chapter describes a case in detail, including the reasoning behind assessment and treatment choices, interventions and outcomes. The themes emphasized throughout the book are the use of the clinical reasoning approach of the intervention process model, the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health as a framework to help therapists inform patient and family decision-making, family-centred approaches in developing and implementing therapeutic strategies, and multidisciplinary team work. |

Editorial Review Product Description The medical treatment and education of children with cerebral palsy is complex and involves a diverse range of professionals. Moreover, there are a number of different approaches for treating pediatric musculoskeletal impairments, such as therapy, orthotics, and surgery. Dr. Miller?s valuable resource helps members of the medical team navigate the complexity of cerebral palsy care. Readers will become familiar with treatments that fall outside of their own disciplines while also benefiting from a review of current practices in their own fields. This comprehensive reference outlines the etiology of cerebral palsy and presents a description of muscle tone and movement problems. Dr. Miller discusses the theory and techniques used by physical and occupational therapists, and he provides suggestions for implementing an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Since the text focuses on improving decision making, recommended treatment algorithms address common questions, such as how to select equipment. Comprehensive coverage of understanding abnormal gaits, as well as the use of braces and wheel chairs, is incorporated into the text. Surgeons will especially appreciate the section that focuses on anatomy and describes surgeries and specific local treatments. Chapters are enhanced by beautiful anatomical drawings depicting key techniques. A companion CD-ROM includes videos of children with walking problems and more than 400 interactive study questions. Editorial Review Product Description Like the rest of the world, I have to deal with my strengths and weaknesses in my own unique manner. Many people look at the amount of accomplishments I have managed to achieve in my short life and are amazed that someone who is disabled could have done so much. Yet I am constantly thinking of how much more there is to do! And if I sat around and spent all of my precious time labeling myself with words like "disabled" and "handicapped," I’d be too busy to ever do anything productive. That is why I say that, in a way, we are ALL disabled. But how? Don’t we all have some area in which we need help? What about the computer illiterate who panics every time his computer makes a noise, opens an extra window, sends him an "error" message, crashes, or freezes up? In today’s technological age, this is definitely a disability that is likely to affect his job performance, his level of proficiency, and perhaps even the security of his very career. What about the person with extremely poor vision who years to be a fighter pilot, or fly domestic flights for United or Delta? Without corrective surgery, and perhaps even with it, their hopes of achieving their dreams are less than zero. And what about the would-be athlete who wants nothing less in life than to be an Olympic athlete, a star quarterback, or a diva figure skater—but who just doesn’t have the physical skills needed to achieve his or her dreams? After all, professional sports requires more than just heart, drive, and desire. It requires coordination, hand-to-eye skills, visual acuity, and in many cases, very specific physical requirements. After all, it would be difficult for a 6’4", 220-pound woman to be a petite figure skater, while it would be almost impossible for a 5’2", 12-pound man to be a defensive lineman for the New York Jets—or the next Michael Jordan! Vision, hearing, and coordination problems. Weight, height, physical fitness. Intelligence, IQ, the money to go to a good college. Nationality, race, religion. Fear, weakness, depression. All of these, and the list goes on and on, are disabilities of some sort. Hidden though they may be, and not labeled a specific name or definition such as cerebral palsy, they are nonetheless real and legitimate disabilities that people face on a day-to-day basis. My best friend in college once compared me to someone that was too short to reach the top shelf in the kitchen. She said that my shakes and the help I needed was no different than the short person who needed help reaching the top shelf. And she was right. All of us have weakness that must be dealt with, just like my shakes and someone else’s shortness. When this happens, a disability occurs. Plain and simple. We all have them, we all deal with them, it’s a part of life. It’s how we react to those disabilities, it’s how we break down the barriers they present, or work our way around them, over them, or through them, that determines how big or little those disabilities are. Understanding your Barriers more and Defeat Them
A motivational and inspirational life journey
TAKING THE 'DIS' OUT OF DISABILITY Despite your disability, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Despite your disability, you are a valuable and contributing member of society. Despite your disability, you are a unique and special individual the likes of which the world has never seen. Sound to good to be true? It isn't. That's the feeling you'll get while reading Rob Pritts' triumphant new self-help book, FROM CP TO CPA: One Man's Triumph over Cerebral Palsy. As a popular and inspiring motivational speaker on the subject of disability awareness, Rob Pritts makes no apologies for the fact the he has cerebral palsy. And why should he? From the start, Rob has never let CP slow him down or throw up barriers in the way of his many hopes and dreams. From a self-contained Special Education classroom to the University of Illinois, where Rob obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, to obtaining the CPA certification, Rob's experiences have allowed him to excel into what his former teachers call a "Special Ed Success Story!" And now that Rob has excelled at his life's ambitions, he is eager to share his positive philosophy with other people with disabilities in his new book: FROM CP TO CPA: One Man's Triumph Over Cerebral Palsy! From special education teachers to their students, from corporate CEOs to frustrated housewives, from churches to colleges, Rob's message is the same: Don't be discouraged by the cards you've been dealt. Instead, make sure you've always got a winning hand by facing each day with a positive mental attitude-and a humble sense of gratitude. Rob mixes personal stories of his life as a disabled child, student, graduate, and professional CPA with easy-to-digest lessons aimed at awakening the disability in us all. Followed by evocative journal prompts, FROM CP TO CPA becomes more than just a book, it evolves into an interactive journey through our very souls. Reading Rob's book is not always easy. Whether you're disabled, or someone without a disability, facing up to your own misconceived notions or perhaps even prejudices is a direct result of Rob's illuminating prose and self-effacing humor. Yet I dare you to walk away from this book uninspired, and as such it makes the perfect tool for facing life more positively when you've been feeling down or uninspired.
