He is so lucky
Reading The Family Business has left me speechless. Anything I say may sound to me like nonsense after reading this amazing text.

Now I understand disable people much better, their physical difficulties, their emotions... I understand what loving a disable child is, what loving an adopted a disable child, like William, is. There are things you guess or infer somehow, but when you read this book, you see what you could not see before. I also understand what happens in the daily life of the disable child's parents and siblings. The author's conversation with Robbie, one of William's three siblings, in chapter 7 is really good. Robbie talks in a sensitive and sensible way.

Robert and Evie's doubts on inclusion in mainstream school or specialist education... no wonder they worry about that; social isolation is painful for the one who suffers it and it must be heart breaking to see a son suffering it. The choice, when he is one's son, does take a lot of thinking and worrying. Both possibilities have a fine side; the mixture Robert Marsden makes here sounds quite sensible to me.

As for William's future, I sometimes wonder what will happen to children like him when his parents lack strength to help him or when they die. I like what Robert Marsden says on page 117.

The second half of page141, where William says why he is so lucky, is a lovely piece. It is not surprising that it has been picked out to be on the back of the book.

It is amazing how Robert and Evie manage this experience and how loving they are to their adopted son. It is a good lesson to see how they accept the fact of having so little time for themselves.

Reading Robert Marsden's book is one of those key emotional experiences that have helped me to fix priorities; it has refreshed me a few important things in my role as a parent, as a teacher and as a human being in general.

Robert Marsden faces doubts and problems in a clear way and he goes straight to the point. I suggest that this book should be read by parents with a disable child, by parents in general and by anybody as we will all eventually come across a disable person. It will help us understand much more.
