As the disabilities host on Bellaonline, I recommend this book. This book covers Cerebral Palsy, and what it is like to have a child with cerebral palsy. It talksabout the family dynamics, how to encourage your child to be independent, how to handle friends, and how to discuss the disability.

I'd recommend this book to both parents and educators.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Newly Diagnosed "Families"
As a mom of a 16 month old with moderate CP, I found this book to be a great starting place. It will not overwhelm you with all the "badstuff" but introduces you to what life may be like with a CPchild.

It also discusses how having a special needs child will meshwithin the family, including dealing with extended family, siblings andfuture siblings (this was the only book I read that discussed this issue),schooling, etc. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book draws together a number of major epidemiological studies of the cerebral palsies from many different countries. The first chapter is a historical review by Dr. Tom Ingram, who translated much of Freud's original writings on cerebral palsy, and is an acknowledged expert in this field. The editors have then drawn together critical evidence from several countries on prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal risk factors contributing to cerebral palsy and have also considered the role played by social factors. An excellent chapter by Jonathan Wigglesworth examines how these adverse factors may modify brain development and result in handicap to the child. The methodological problems of classifying and counting the cerebral palsies and assessing their frequency are fully discussed, and the difficult question of how far the perinatal health services have an impact on outcome is considered. Altogether, this is a comprehensive book on this topic, and an invaluable reference source for anyone working in the field of cerebral palsy or epidemiology. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
This text shifts attention away from the anatomical and pathophysiological aspects of cerebral palsy and examines it within the framework of a child's normal development. The major tasks at each developmental transition from baby to young adult are examined in detail together with the interaction between the patient and the professional carer. The emphasis throughout is on a team approach and the book is written by various members of the team. This book should be of interest to paediatricians, rehabilitation specialists and neurologists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but worth it
This book, written in England, provides an outstanding description of the development of children and teenagers with cerebral palsy. The authors described the emotional, neurological, social, and motor control issues ina very clear and succinct way.I found this book to be more helpful inexplaning developmental issues than several American reference books whichare much longer than this book.I especially liked the description of theimportance of play for young children.

Also good was the clearrecognition that society unfairly puts the burden on individuals withdisabilities to adjust to non-disabled norms, rather than making theadjustments necessary to fully integrate disabled people. For example, howmany times do restaurant and hotel owners complain that it is "tooexpensive" to make their buildings accessible?

Well worth themoney. ... Read more
