Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of cleft lip and palate. Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that affect the upper lip and roof of the mouth. They happen when the tissue that forms the roof of the mouth and upper lip don't join before birth. The problem can range from a small notch in the lip to a groove that runs into the roof of the mouth and nose. This can affect the way the child's face looks. It can also lead to problems with eating, talking and ear infections. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value! Excerpt: Great Ormond Street Hospital -The hospital works with the UCL Institute of Child Health, and is the largest centre for research into childhood illness outside the United States and Canada, and a major international trainer of doctors and nurses. It has the widest range of children's specialists of any UK hospital, and is the largest centre for children's heart or brain surgery, or children with cancer, in the UK. Recent high profile breakthroughs include successful gene therapy for immune diseases, following a decade of research. In October 2008, the hospital was rated by the Healthcare Commission as "good" for quality of care (a reduction from "excellent" in 2007) and "good" for use of resources (an improvement from "fair" in 2007). Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust is a member of the UCL Partners academic health science centre. In 2002 Great Ormond Street Hospital commenced a redevelopment programme which is budgeted at £343 million and the next phase of which is scheduled to be complete by 2012. The redevelopment is needed to expand capacity, deliver treatment in a more comfortable and modern way, and to reduce unnecessary inpatient admissions. Great Ormond Street Hospital launched its public consultation to become a foundation trust on 9 February 2010, and hopes to be a foundation Trust by early 2011. In 1929 the hospital was the recipient of playwright J. M. Barrie's copyright to the Peter Pan works, with the provision that the income from this source not be disclosed. This gave the institution control of the rights to these works, and entitled...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=866161 ... Read more

Excerpt: Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis), which can also occur together as cleft lip and palate, are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation. A cleft is a fissure or openinga gap. It is the non-fusion of the body's natural structures that form before birth. Approximately 1 in 700 children born have a cleft lip and/or a cleft palate. It has sometimes colloquially been equated with the phrase harelip, but this is considered deeply offensive, and is used incorrectly, as that term refers to the pulling of the lip towards the nose. Clefts can also affect other parts of the face, such as the eyes, ears, nose, cheeks, and forehead. In 1976, Paul Tessier described fifteen lines of cleft. Most of these craniofacial clefts are even more rare and are frequently described as Tessier clefts using the numerical locator devised by Tessier. A cleft lip or palate can be successfully treated with surgery, especially so if conducted soon after birth or in early childhood. If the cleft does not affect the palate structure of the mouth it is referred to as cleft lip. Cleft lip is formed in the top of the lip as either a small gap or an indentation in the lip (partial or incomplete cleft) or it continu...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=239890 ... Read more

Product Description
Traditionally, cleft lip repair has been carried out around 10 to 12 weeks of age. There have been surgeons who have done surgery in the newborn, but there has been no series where cleft lip repair has been carried out in the first 48 hours as a routine procedure over a long period with long term results. The author's unit has performed this operation routinely since the 1970s, and collected data on the speech, hearing, growth and appearance of the children, who are now in their 20s. The main argument against this procedure was the anaesthetic risk in performing surgery so early in life. Having analyzed all the arguments for and against, the author provides a detailed analysis of the work in this book. ... Read more
