Product Description
Majoradvances in the diagnosis and treatment of oral clefts have been made in the past 50 years, and recent genetics and epidemiological studies have led to new theories about the causes of cleft lip and palate. Addressing issues that are relevant to clinicians, researchers and family members, this book is a comprehensive, well-illustrated, and up-to-date account of the many facets of this common disorder. The authors describe the embryological and molecular mechanisms of cleft causation, present and illustrate the genetic and epidemiological methods used to identify risk factors for oral clefts, and describe treatments by the various professionals of the cleft team.A section is also devoted to the integration of research findings into public health practice, including ethical and financial considerations. The book draws together such diverse disciplines as craniofacial development, gene mapping, epidemiology, medicine, ethics, health economics, and health policy and management, and it will be an invaluable reference work. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars careless shipping
The expensive books have been sent without bolstering in a box too big for them. That issue produced damage to the edges of the books.
Annoying .....

2-0 out of 5 stars OK book, not worth more than $70-80
An OK book which covers lots of procedures, however one could NEVER get a thorough understanding of any of the procedures by reading this book. Each complex operation is way oversimplified into 4-5 basic drawings. An atlas should be a thorough description of a procedure, complete with pearls, indications, pre-op/post-op guidelines, and a thorough description with comprehensive drawings of the operative steps- this doesn't even come close. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Cleft lip and palate are common and distressing human birth defects but much still needs to be learnt about the care and management of these conditions and the long-term consequences of treatment. This work provides a forum for the development of a better understanding of the problems involved and for new ideas to be developed to significantly improve the treatment of this condition. All aspects including plastic surgery, speech therapy, oral and maxillofacial surgery, growth, psychology and paediatrics are analyzed and discussed as well as treatment failures and prosthetic rehabilitation. This second volume deals with the older patient and failure of primary treatment. Using computer graphics, the three-dimensional long-term results of various types of primary treatment are assessed and the problems of secondary treatment are discussed. The problem of patient compliance with cleft palate regimes and prosthodontics is addressed and the prevention of orofacial defects examined. The future developments, including the prospects for inter-unit co-operation, are also explored. The work includes discussions between experts with differing viewpoints and sometimes controversial opinions. It is intended to be a useful reference for those involved in the treatment of cleft lip and palate patients including plastic surgeons, orthodontists, speech therapists, paediatricians, psychologists, radiologists and medical geneticists. ...
