5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
This book is a must-have for any communication science undergrad or speech-language pathology graduate student! I am currently in my final year of grad school, completing my first internship; and, I sure wish I'd had this during the past few years of coursework. I will definitely be using it as a reference during the rest of my internship and CFY. It will also be very helpful to use whilestudying for the PRAXIS. The book contains definitions, black and white diagrams, as well as very useful reference charts and tables in the back. Well-worth the money!

".....Speech, Language, and Hearing are fields of never-ending research.
NEW AREAS HAVE BEEN EXPLORED,

It became imperative that we publish a fourth edition if we were to continue our original purpose to
"provide a comprehensive dictionary/sourcebook containing definitions of the terminology in the fields of Speech,
Language,
and Hearing professions."....."

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Live Without It (but using 4th edition)
This was the first book I ever purchased in SLP. My prof instructed us to buy for building our professional library. At the time, I thought THANKS A LOT. I thought I had just wasted money on a book I didn't need for the class. Since that time, I have used this book for countless term papers, clinical reports, cross referencing more difficult texts, and looking up spellings regularly. My addition has several developmental charts and testing indexes. My only complaint is that the more medicaly based terminology is missing(ie: the anatomical structures are realy just the greatest hits of the larynx and brain, and I am a bit lost when it comes to none SLP or AUD measures at the hospital rotations). I hope this has been improved for the new edition, but at the same time would hate it to become to cumbersome to use. I am nearing the end of my Masters' and coming up on the Praxis exam. I intend to use this as a way to study across several topics in the field. All in all a GREAT REFERENCE! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars First Time buyer of Used book.
I am a first time buyer of used books. I was discouraged to buy these books because I was not familiar with what people perceive as used in this country. My wife is an international student and in our country used books are really really used...I was encouraged to try it and I did.Book in excellent condition for school use.I was very surprised by the good quality of the book and am looking forward to make another purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Counseling a great book
I found this book to have some really interesting ideas on how to approach things that may come up in your life as a clinical professional. However, I am thinking he could have written more about his experiences. The book was not too long and an easy read which is fine..but he could have expanded alot more on topics such as group counseling, approaches, and so forth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Professionals
I highly recommend Dr. Luterman's text book to any professional who works with the families of people with disabilities. I had read the book seven years ago as part of my graduate training in speech-language pathology. More than any other book, this one has had a lasting effect on my clinical practice. Dr. Luterman is an research audiologist turned counselor. When discussing the issues facing families, he presents research as well as personal anecdotes and quotes from the families he was worked with in his practice. The clinical anecdotes give a personal feel to much of the writing; for a text book, it is can beemotionally charged reading. The book describes models of understanding family adaptation to disabilities, and perhaps most importantly, the book describes basic counseling techniques. Whenever the going gets tough with a family, I find myself referring back to this book, especially the chapters on counseling techniques. One reason that I recommend this book so highly is that it contains information that is difficult to come by. I work with speech-pathology interns and graduate students, as well as other professionals - occupational and physical therapists, nurses and educators. Although many are very skilled in their discipline, they often feel defeated in their attempts to understand or deal with family issues. When I loan them Dr. Luterman's book, they consistently find it illuminating. ... Read more

Understanding Research and Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders is an engaging, student-friendly text that explores the connection between common communication science research methods and clinical practice. Covering both the conceptual and the quantitative aspects of research methods, evidence-based practice, experimental design, and statistics, this book both elucidates various models of research and practice and explains how these models are important to the greater field of communication science.

While some students and practitioners find many books on research, evidence-based practice, and statistical concepts to be intimidating, abstract, and dry, Understanding Research and Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders strives to emphasize not only the ideas surrounding evidence-based practice but also how its principles can be applied in clinical practice. The text also includes a number of helpful study aides such as learning objectives, learning activities, and a glossary, all of which help shed considerable light on these challenging and sometimes daunting subjects.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not happy with this one
The "like new" copy of the textbook I received had lots of highlighting and much marginalia. That was disappointing enough but I received the book in very poor condition - corner smashed in and pages rumpled and compressed together so they were very difficult to disengage and flatten out to turn and actually READ.Cover ripped. Poor packaging for such a heafty but pliable tome. The discount (about $40) wasn't worth getting a brand new one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - So so Delivery
This is an incredibly interesting book with a profound amount of information on Communication Disorders. Each chapter is written by authors that are specialized in all the different areas of this vast topic.
All in all a good read, an essential necessity, especially if studying towards a Speech and Language Pathology degree.

The only negative aspect is the shipping(to New Zealand) which took two and a half weeks longer than promised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Communications Disorders
This is a well written text that is easy to take notes from.It is very thorough, but it is definitely written with the professional in mind, with many sitings and technical terms.

3-0 out of 5 stars some good points, some not that great
This text book is very comprehensive and updated (particularly regarding the chapters on genetics and multiculturalism). However, as an introductory text, it contains too much information in too many chapters, often on an intermediate level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Good
Considering they just came out with another edition, I didn't want to spend a lot on this older one-and didn't. Still has great info, and came with the CD. Came within a week of ordering it with expedited shipping and in much better condition than was stated ("good").

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
There are no pages torn out to my knowledge, there is very little highlighting, the CD was included, overall good shape.

3-0 out of 5 stars Website needs attention
Clearly written and concise in the book, but the online portion has some major problems: hints for the practice questions direct the user to unrelated pages in unread chapters, and some answers are switched so a student who supplies the correct answer appears to get it wrong.

This textbook describes the approaches to phonology that are most relevant to communication disorders. It examines schools of thought in theoretical phonology, and their relevance to description, explanation and remediation in the clinical context.

A recurring theme throughout the book is the distinction between phonological theories that attempt elegant, parsimonious descriptions of phonological data, and those that attempt to provide a psycholinguistic model of speech production and perception.

This book introduces all the relevant areas of phonology to the students and practitioners of speech-language pathology and is a companion volume to the authors’ Phonetics for Communication Disorders.
