5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Straightforward Read!
This book is an excellent source for getting information about lots of cultures and how to assess and provide intervention ethically. The language and vocabulary used makes it easy for anyone to read this book.I highly recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Seller was Dishonest
I was happy to receive my purchase but was more than a little disappointed when the book advertised as "New" was in fair condition at best. The price was cut in half when I brought this to the seller's attention, but I could have done without the hassle.I cannot help but feel that the seller was dishonest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Communication Disorders in Multicultural Populations Review
The book is a collection of research study essays that survey cultural aspects of communication disorders. These essays cover cultural diversity issues, communication disorders and their development, and clinical issues. I feel that the book has good content, but lacks sufficient research on older people and leaves many questions for the reader or reviewer.
The book contains good information about culture and communication disorders. The book discusses five ethnic groups and the background of each. I think that this information is helpful to Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists to know and consider. In addition, the book contained well-written essays about how communication disorders develop in different cultures. I feel that the information in the last chapters is very useful to the therapist.
On the contrary, I think this book is lacking in some areas such as it focuses on children, while more sufficient research on older people needs to be prepared. This research is needed so that Speech Pathologists and Audiologists can treat adults more appropriately. Overall, the book leaves the reader with good information but at the same time longing for ample attention on adults and wondering about how the different cultures react to certain aspects of communication and treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful
This book may be heavy for those that are not familiar with the Lahey paradigm. As I have had Dr. Moses for 4 different classes, and the main paradigm for language acquisition at LIU is the Lahey paradigm, this book brought everything he lectures on together for me. Some important aspects of intervention that this book describes include (a) how to collaborate with other professionals (b) how to take into account all aspects of a child (i.e. sensorimotor) and most importantly(c)down how to develop and write goals. This is going to be my bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Moses & Klein breaks it down
This book breaks up each theory and explains it to you directly. It doesn't throw you off with tangents, like some other textbooks do. Moses & Klein try to take into consideration where the student is coming from, i.e. how much you already know and how much you need to know.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is a hard read
Good information is included in this book but it is no walk in the park to glean the knowledge from it.There are better books in print that do the same thing with a lot less confusion on the part of the reader.

1-0 out of 5 stars book lingo at upper grad level but information for undergrad
I used this book as a student because my teacher required it but the whole class had trouble deciphering what was said in the core of this book.As a result the grades for the class was lowered substantially. This book was written for undergraduate students before they start clinic but the terms found in this book are really what only a graduate post-graduate would understand. If you are looking for a book that will help in clarifying goal steps and procedures I admantly do not recommend this one, it will only confuse you more just like it did the rest of my peers. ... Product Description
This new book offers a unique combination of scholarly information, invaluable resources, and time-saving protocols on assessment of communication disorders in children. Most resource books offer limited research and scholarly information, thus making them unsuitable as textbooks for academic courses on assessment and diagnosis. Similarly, most traditional textbooks do not include practical, easy-to-use, and time-saving resources and protocols that the practicing clinicians can readily use during assessment sessions. By combining the strengths of traditional textbooks and newer assessment resources and protocols, this one-of-a kind book offers a single, comprehensive source that is suitable as a textbook and useful as a practical clinical resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great SLP Assessment Resource!
"Assessment of Communication Disorders in Children" is a superb all-around assessment resource for speech pathologists! It has a case history form and a protocol for each area of evaluation (speech, language, fluency, voice [yes, resonance is lumped in with voice], and assessment of nonverbal and minimally verbal children). The authors also include a literacy primer.

Hegde and Pomaville explain and discuss the limits of standardized and non-standardized assessments and give clear, practical advice for assessing "ethnoculturally diverse children" (a major reason for their preference of non-standardized assessment methods for ALL children, regardless of background). Take note that, for reimbursement purposes, their strong inclination toward non-standardized assessment is not necessarily practical, but their advocacy is strengthened by reason and research, and they do offer lists and brief descriptions of many standardized and non-standardized materials that are available.

In areas of disagreement (e.g., quantitative analysis of stuttering), the authors explain their reasons for their own interpretations as well as opposing views, and they interpret the research in what seems to be a balanced light.

Unlike many other assessment resources, this one doesn't gloss over the non- and minimally-verbal kids. It provides a solid chapter on best practices for their assessment and includes an explanation of the evolution of AAC.

The authors avoid chapter titles like, "Evaluating a Child with Autism" or "How to Assess a Child Who Has an Intellectual Disability". Instead, they categorize assessment from a communication perspective (e.g., language, voice, fluency) and then mention other behaviors or disabilities that are often concomitant. Each chapter also has a differential diagnosis section to help you distinguish between the subcategories within a communication area (e.g., straight artic. vs. phonology vs. dysarthria vs. artic. secondary to structural anomalies).

Included with this resource is a CD with fully customizable protocols and forms. You can easily add your own letterhead and the client's information and then incorporate these forms into your own report.

All in all, this book is well worth the money you will shell out for it. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

The text discusses several newer methods including technology-based approaches. The emphasis throughout is on instructional techniques that are firmly grounded in research.

Product Description

This is the leading text for courses in clinical phonology–thoroughly revised and updated to include the most current and up-to-date information in the field. Even the newly added subtitle, Speech Sound Disorders in Children, reflects recent changes in the field, including new terminology. This classic text does not prescribe a single approach to phonological disorders but rather presents an eclectic perspective on the nature, assessment, and treatment of this communication impairment. The addition of a third author, Peter Flipsen Jr., a highly-recognized scholar in the area of clinical phonology, brings important, new information for readers and fresh perspectives to the text.  Among the many highlights and special features of the sixth edition are: An entire section devoted to the classification of speech sound disorders; The latest information on Childhood Apraxia of Speech, including a detailed discussion of the 2007 ASHA position statement; A revised and updated comprehensive chapter on Normal Development; A full section on measuring clinical change set within the context of evidence-based practice; An outstanding summary of phonological acquisition information written by leading researcher in this area, Sharynne McLeod; Comprehensive coverage of dialects and phonologic characteristics of speakers with first languages other than English, prepared by leading authorities in this area, Brian Goldstein and Aquiles Iglesias; A completely updated chapter on phonological awareness, co-authored by Laura Justice, Gail Gillon, and C. Melanie Schuele; A fully comprehensive and current review of etiological variables, thorough discussion of the assessment of phonologic disorders, and an updated review of broad-based intervention methodologies; and every chapter features introductions, summaries, charts, and graphs to guide learning and aid students’ comprehension. The sixth edition of Articulation and Phonological Disorders: Speech Sound Disorders in Children proves once again its “classic” status, and its rightful place on every speech, language, and hearing clinician’s bookshelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
The book was in great shape and made it here safely. The only problems was the sender did not send a receipt paper. Thanks for the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not an Introductory Guide
There is no doubt that the authors of this text are indeed experts. All concepts have an angular approach and base nearly each written conceptual description with its source, scholarly journal, theorist/investigator or experimental finding.

Sentences are overloaded with information-- there are no fillers and no glaze-over sentences.Any simplistic language that is easily processed in any text for a reader's occassional "breath" are instead substituted with the most technical or clinical term, followed by an overwhelming complexity of language that requires every ounce of concentration and comprehension exercisable.I believe EACH sentence was written with the purpose of leaving someone in complete jaw-dropping awe.

Students opening this book will most likely have encountered the foundational framework for many of the concepts presented and may find just the right amount of challenge and stimulus needed to reactivate their knowledge or expand on it with it's lengthy, thorough, and small-print font. However, I HIGHLY discourage anyone seeking an "introductory guide" or "overview" of articulatory and phonological disorders to begin their studies here.Authors have clearly written this book for the "continuing" student, not the "new" one.Even the introductory chapter is written with the assumption that you have a background in linguistics and/or phonetics. That being said--this book, I imagine, was intended for 4th-year or graduate level study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for a Follow-Up Book
Paul Wider has done such a fine job with this book that he should soon write another. It has been an honor to participate in this project with him as an editor. Wider has provided such a gift to people who struggle and suffer with this disease. His wit and wisdom, as a fellow sufferer, carries a note that sounds thoroughly convincing thoughout this volume. The "Tools" section is especially rewarding. Anyone who cares about someone who deals with depressive illness should read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Depression and manic Depression -P. Wider
I feel sympathetic toward this author because he is also bipolar and he wrote a book to help others with his best intentions and best resources... however, I found it to be almost childish in its lack of sophistication. I think a young teen or older child would be able to use the book to get started on the road to recovery with bipolar illness. For me, I read the whole book in about 20 minutes. It is full of lists, little drawings and charts and a very personalized and narrow perspective on tools and techniques to help oneself through the ups and downs of the illness. It's not a very good book. In fact, it really is poorly written and lacking in substance. Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
This book completely changed my life!I've been in therapy and on medication for depression for about 20 years with no lasting success. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized that I was suffering from bipolar disorder, not simply depression. With the help of this book, therapy, and medication specifically for bipolar, I am a healthy, happy adult now and am so thankful for Dr. Wider.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Enough
I bought this book hoping it would give me insight into why I was feeling depressed. But it didn't. It gave pratical advice and just wasn't good enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gaining a REAL Insight to some of your lifetime problems
My father saw an ad in a local newspaper that the author, Paul Wider, was speaking at a nearby Borders bookstore.I listened to his presentation and purchased his book.Having listened to him speak and as he lives nearby,I was able to see him regularly.

For those that can not see him,the book is an excellent restatement of his thoughts and helpful solutions to the entrenched problem of mild depression. Also, as I read the book, I would time and time again see myself.

It is possible that the reader may not be as devoted in his religion as is Mr. Wider. But that should be put aside by the reader as everything else in his work is compelling and worthy of deep thought as to how you might have some of the same issues.

The issue of depression is addressed in a very pragmatic, direct and practical manner.
