From the author: Objective: This study was designed to determine the prevalence and demographic distribution of problem gambling, pathological gambling, alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence in the United States, and to examine the co-occurrence of gambling pathology and alcohol pathology in the United States. Method: A representative sample (N = 2,638) of U.S. adults age 18 and older was surveyed in the year 2000 using computer-assisted telephone interviewing. Respondents' gambling pathology and alcohol dependence were assessed by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Results: Current pathological gambling had an overall prevalence of 1.3% as measured by the DIS and 1.9% as measured by the SOGS, with a higher prevalence among minorities and lower socioeconomic stares (SES) respondents. Current and lifetime alcohol pathology was more common among males and young adults than among females and older adults. Current pathological gambling and alcohol dependence were correlated, and the highest correlation was found among higher SES respondents. Conclusions: The rate of current pathological gambling in the United States is higher than reported in past surveys. Minorities and lower SES Americans have higher than average rates of current pathological gambling. However, when higher SES persons are classified as current pathological gamblers, they are more likely than lower SES persons to be dependent on alcohol. (J. Stud. Alcohol 62: 706-712, 2001)

Description:
The National Opinion Research Center DSM Screen for Gambling Problems (NODS), a population-based telephone-screening tool to identify gambling problems according to DSM-IV criteria, was examined as a potential outcome measure for gambling treatment studies. The NODS was administered to problem gamblers as part of a 1-year follow-up after a brief treatment. Internal reliability was fair to good and the factor structure and item-total correlations supported the existence of a single construct with three subfactors, measuring negative behavioral consequences, preoccupation and impaired control over gambling and tolerance, and withdrawal and relief gambling. The NODS total score correlated moderately with gambling behavior and outcome as predicted. The total score also correlated highly with the total score of the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) although the NODS and SOGS categorization of nonproblem, problem, and pathological gamblers showed poor agreement. The NODS, as designed, provided a more strict definition of disordered gambling than the SOGS. In summary, the NODS shows promise as an outcome measure of gambling problems. ... Read more

From the supplier: "Pathological" gambling may resemble a socially constructed disorder rather than a medical diagnosis in many treatment centers. A study of 12 subjects being treated for "pathological" gambling found that none of the them fit the medical diagnosis of "pathological" gambler. The model may serve clients interpersonally and clinicians occupationally.

From the supplier: Local governments have turned to legalized gambling to generate more revenues. However, gambling, whether legal or illegal, has its concomitant social costs. Gambling can become just as addictive as drugs, alcohol or smoking. There are approximately nine million adults and 1.3 million teenagers who gamble, and gambling addiction affects the poor more often than the affluent. A bill has been introduced in Congress to look into the gambling problem.
