4-0 out of 5 stars Complete information for specialists
I used this book during the preparation of my thesis. For this purpose, it was sometimes too detailed and complex. I think this book will be helpfull for congenital heart specialists, since all information is included for every heart defect, very well-organized. Every chapter on a certain malformation includes the history, physical appearance, auscultation, additional investigations and a clear summary. A lot of illustrations of ECG's or x-rays and pictures clarify the text. The book is (as the title says) specifically focussed on the clinical recognition of a malformation. For other purposes, such as studying longer-term outcome, the book does not provide the information. ... Read more

Product Description
To the adult cardiologist, the language of congenital heart disease can be confusing and the spectrum of disease bewildering. Many find the prospect of meeting an adult with complex congenital heart disease in the emergency department disturbing, and rightly so. This book aims to dispel confusion and equip cardiology trainees, general cardiologists, and acute medicine physicians with a sound understanding of the principles of the physiology and management of adult congenital heart disease, so that they can treat emergencies and recognize the need for referral to a specialist unit.

With easy-to-understand diagrams and key clinical points, this handbook provides both rapid reference for use when the clinical need arises and also an insight into the basic principles of congenital heart disease, giving the reader a good grounding in the care of the adult with congenital heart disease. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Congenital malformations of the heart are often dismissed as a form of complex heart disease, which is too difficult to understand, and is best referred to the specialists. The authors of this handbook, however, aim to dispel this myth. The advent of cross-sectional and, more recently, three-dimensional echocardiography, enables the structural malformations to be visualised virtually non-invasively. Without a thorough understanding of the arrangement of cardiac structures, interpretation of these images can be very frustrating, not to mention having to cope with difficult terminology. Contrary to popular belief, however, the reader does not require any knowledge of cardiac embryology in order to understand the morphology of a malformed heart. This book takes the reader through the subject in a straightforward fashion, beginning with recognition of the normal cardiac chambers, progressing through the process of analysing the layout of the chambers in a sequential way, and then dealing with the more common cardiac defects in turn. Each chapter deals with the anatomical arrangement illustrated with diagrams and complemented with echocardiographic images of the most important cross-sections. The text is succinct, and is accompanied by numerous diagrams and cross-sectional echocardiographic images of the highest quality. The most common defects are described chapter by chapter, emphasising the salient anatomical features. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Mis Titled
This is an excellent pathology book covering practical pathologic aspects of congenital heart disease. If you are looking for a book on echocardiography, this is a nice supplement, but not a primary echo text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This gem of a book will become a classic that belongs on the shelf of everyone with an interest in congenital heart disease. It distills the essence of the elegant papers, lectures, and texts on the subject that have been presented by Dr. Anderson and his esteemed colleagues through the years. The photographs and diagrams of congenital heart disease are indispensable to the beginner who seeks to understand cardiac morphology, and will be a permanent addition to the library of anyone who hopes to pass such knowledge on to others. The only somewhat unfortunate thing about this book is that it's title is somewhat misleading, in suggesting that it is, somehow, a handbook for those who seek to learn how to press the buttons on the echo machine and produce beautiful images without perspiring like the rest of us. The title almost trivializes the value of this volume. An earlier reviewer expressed these concerns, but that neophyte pediatric cardiologist has, by now, I would hope, realized that he unwittingly bought a book that he will need to guard from theft by junior colleagues in the future. In anticipation of that I am ordering several more copies, myself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good add to paediatric cardiology fellow library
I bought this book for my first Echo rotation in paediatric cardiology fellowship. This book concentrates on morphology of CHD in cross-sectional description with some echocardiography empasis. I must say that the echocardiographic findings were not clearly described or shown as I expected from the title of the book.. I think it is a good add to beginner library as morphology book, which can help to understand the anatomy of complex lesions better when you do Echo However, you will need another source to learn the echo finding for different CHD. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Undoubtably the best Pediatric Echo textbook to date.
Of course, this book has been out for 10 years, but this is (in my professional opinion) the most complete, concise textbook on the market since being published. It is practical in the description of complex malformations and seems to meld Andersonian and Van Praag-ian explanation of morphogenesis and terminology, but remains non-biased toward either. It is descriptive of defects in a logical and pragmatic way without confusing the reader with technomorphojargin. I purchased this book 2 years ago as a guide for student preceptees and pediatric cardiology fellows and it has proven invaluable as a resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars meritorious echocardiography text.
This outstanding work on paediatric echocardiography is a reference book. It exhaustively deals with embryology and correlates them to congenital heart diseases. This information makes the task of cardiologists easier enabling him to seek the abnormality, and their associated defects. paediatric echocardiography is oftenlikened to looking for a black cat in a dark room. This text, I believe throws an illumination on the elusive cat. it also deals with all congenital diseases in great details along with comments on surgical aspects and their aftermath as seen on echocardiography. Truly this book has great merits for all echo-cardiologists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Didactic and precise
The book is what it claims to be, and have given me as an ultrasound technician an enormous amount of help. I especially liked the extent of anatomical detail given in the text. The illustrations, both line drawings and echocardiograms are of high quality. ... Read more

    Product Description
The adult population with congenital heart disease is increasing rapidly. More than 80% of children with congenital heart disease now reach adulthood, with some congenital heart diseases diagnosed for the first time in adults. The operations performed during childhood may have severe residual findings, which need to be repaired. Cardiologists of all subspecialties will meet these patients and should be familiar with the most common problems and the basic principles of care for adults with congenital heart disease.

This highly illustrated and well-written text is aimed at cardiologists and internal medical doctors, whether qualified or in-training, who are not specialized in the field of congenital heart disease, and will, nevertheless, meet these patients more and more often in their daily practice. The complicated subject of congenital heart disease is written in a very simple, easy and comprehensive way. The purpose is to give a brief overview of the morphology, physiology, diagnostic methods, therapy and prognosis of the most common congenital heart disease in adulthood.

Echocardiography is a superior method for diagnosing congenital heart disease in adulthood. However, the echocardiographer has to know what to look for and recognize basic disease patterns; otherwise he will miss the diagnosis. Adult Congenital Heart Disease contains many excellent drawings and echocardiographic documentation with practical suggestions. All the echocardiograms come from routine examination and only from adults, whose examination is often much more difficult than that of the children.

Written by international leaders in the field of adult congenital heart disease, this superb guide: ... Read more

    Product Description
Developed to integrate cardiac anatomy with surgical repair by reviewing individual heart defects within an easy-to-follow reference format, A Practical Atlas of Congenital Heart Disease is designed to allow the reader to examine a congenitally malformed heart while referring to its anatomic and surgical description on a single page spread.

Simple line drawings are used to identify the diagnostic anatomic features and to emphasize important surgical landmarks, allowing readers to differentiate the infinitely variable morphology in clinical practice. The anatomic pathologist will also gain an understanding of surgical repairs of postoperative hearts. For virtually every malformation, the position of the specialized conduction tissue is indicated.

The book provides examples of malformations and the relevant surgical considerations, reflecting clinical practice: anatomical specimens are shown in the anatomical position, while the surgical figures are shown as they would be seen operatively. This enables the reader to practice mental imaging of the morphologic and spatial relationships that are integral to congenital heart surgery. In addition, some of the illustrated cases and morphology presented in these pages are themselves rare and sometimes unique examples of particular congenital heart malformations. ... Read more

This video introduces the viewer to a philosophic approach for, and a morphologic background to, the diagnosis of children with congenitally malformed hearts. In each video of the series, the anatomy is demonstrated as seen in echocardiographic cuts, relating to the three-dimensional structure of the heart, and then the echocardiographic images themselves are shown, demonstrating the window from which they have been obtained. This first video offers an introduction to normality, showing the orthogonal planes of the heart relative to the body, and illustrates how the echocardiorapher interrogates each plane. Emphasis is then placed on normal anatomic features which underscore sequential segmental analysis. The explanatory booklet contains video time codes to guide the viewer. ... Read more

    Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Congenital Heart Disease," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Congenital Heart Disease in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Congenital Heart Disease when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Congenital Heart Disease, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
