Excerpt: Atrial septal defect (ASD) is a form of congenital heart defect that enables blood flow between the left and right atria via the interatrial septum. The interatrial septum is the tissue that divides the right and left atria. Without this septum, or if there is a defect in this septum, it is possible for blood to travel from the left side of the heart to the right side of the heart, or vice versa. Irrespective of interatrial communication bi-directions, this results in the mixing of arterial and venous blood. The mixing of arterial and venous blood may or may not be hemodynamically significant, if even clinically significant. This mixture of blood may or may not result in what is known as a "shunt". The amount of shunting present, if any, dictates hemodynamic significance (see Pathophysiology below). A "right-to-left-shunt" typically poses the more dangerous scenario (se...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=667634 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for a GREAT cause!Children's Heart Fund In Memory of Alex at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
It is our honor to share Alex's story with the world and to spread CHD awareness. We hope you are able to share Alex's story with your family and friends.

100% profit will go to Alex's Heart Fund at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center!

"Children's Heart Fund in Memory of Alexander Xavier Gallegos" at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

This fund will provide financial assistance to families of "blue babies" who, like Alex, are born with a heart condition that makes them turn bluish or purplish from lack of oxygen. Some of these families travel many miles so that their babies can receive the specialized care that they need at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The Children's Heart Fund will be managed by Alex's heart surgeon, Dr. Greg Fontana, and will help families in need with costs like medications, fuel, meals, and lodging while their babies are in the hospital.

Our hope is that the Children's Heart Fund will continue to grow every year so that it can ultimately be big enough to fund important medical research in pediatric cardiology as well. We would also like to be able to cover the transportation and escorting costs for one child per year to come to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center from Central or South America and receive otherwise unavailable heart surgery.

For now, however, we are grateful to help families in smaller, but still important, ways.

Thank you for your Support! ... Read more
