Positive Options for Chrohn's Disease
Be aware.... I had one problem with it. I've had crohn's for eighteen years and am something of an expert. Every crohn's sufferer Iknow avoids too much fibre as it acts like glass to our poor inflamed guts. Dr Hunter at Addenbrookes recommends a low fat LOW FIBRE diet as treatment. Whilst pears, apples, cherries, mango, melons and pineapple may be fine, other fruits such as citrus and bananas may cause further problems. With vegetables, spinach, carrots & sweet potato, should all be fine, but onions, tomatoes, potato skin, and really anything high in fibre should, I believe, be avoided. To ensure adequate nutrition, peel all vegetables, avoid fruit and vegetables with pips and seeds or remove carefully, or try eating in pureed form or as soups. Finally, if you have very severe crohn's or have had it for any length of time, this may not be the book for you as it deals with the basics and implies that there is a successful treatment for all, which unfortunately, isn't always the case. If you are looking for reassurance and support after a few hard years of recurring disease, this may not help. However, a good, varied book, written by one who actually has the disease for once.

Editorial Review Product Description Volume 1 is on IBD and Ulcerative Colitis, and Volume 2 is on IBD and Crohn’s Disease. All areas that were covered in the 2nd edition have been expanded and updated. New sections include the rapidly expanding knowledge of genetics and the role of the intestinal flora and environmental factors in etiology and pathogenesis. Among the 168 chapters, there are 20 on biologic therapies and 30 on surgical management. The consultant/authors clearly state their approach to important issues, such as the duration of immunomodulator and of anti-TNF use and the options for managing isolated low-grade dysplasia. A strong focus on the individual patient is woven throughout both volumes, including the benefits and risks of potentially life-altering therapies and surgeries. Entire sections detail concerns about the well-being of each person. This book provides information for health professionals who help both pediatric and adult patients navigate through the lifelong shadow of a chronic, probably genetically determined ordeal. |

Editorial Review Product Description Customer Reviews (2)
The Best Available Salt and Neimark provide a complete analysis of the mind/body/spirit connection, taking you from the causes of your problem to the resolution of it that only knowledge and action can provide.Their approach employs all of the latest research in mainstream medicine as well as some bold and positive understandings that are unliikely to appear in the conventional literature. The only slight "negative" may be many of the illustrations, which are frankly insipid and unilluminating. On the other hand, they do provide some "breathing space" for the reader, possibly providing the text with a lighter tone and feel.

Editorial Review Product Description I will use laymen's terms and easy to understand English but I will have to use some technical and medical terms to tie it all together. Any technical or medical term that needs clarification will be defined. Also included are some reference information, medication information, medication side effects, vitamins and supplements, nutritional information, some support organizations and some helpful websites. Many books have been written about Crohn's disease by those who have only studied or treated it and most books are written by more than one person. But for those of us who live with it from day to day, every day of our entire lives, we know what it is like to be sick by ourselves with no end in sight. This Handbook has been written from that perspective. Even when I have my Crohn’s somewhat under control, I too endure the long sleepless nights, the pain, agony, suffering, loneliness, public embarrassment, and the fear that those who don't have this disease won’t really understand what we are going through. It is hard to explain that we are sick when we appear to be perfectly healthy. As I have found in my research of Crohn's disease and other chronic illnesses, most people with Crohn's don't complain too much about being sick, but the sick feeling never goes away. I have also discovered that there are many support groups with many people who suffer greatly from Crohn's and you should make every attempt to become involved with some of these groups. The only way to know more about your disease is to know more about your disease. Hopefully, this Handbook will assist you to understand Crohn’s disease a little better and help you to cope with and overcome that never-ending sick feeling. Good luck in your endeavors and may better health and happiness be with you. Customer Reviews (9)
Very useful handbook!
Never showed up
Read this Book!
Thank you for the book My cousin has had Mr. Pilkington's book for about 12 weeks. She has been able to eat foods that Mr. Pilkington describes in his book with much success and she is gaining weight and is feeling much better. Simply put, Mr. Pilkington tolerated my showing up unannounced, listened to my story, gave me a book, signed it and gave me his cell phone number. Then he told me that my cousin could call him anytime to talk about the problems she was dealing with. Mr. Pilkington's book is very well written and Mr. Pilkington and his wife are some of the nicest people I have ever met. When I showed up unannounced at their home and they took the time to talk to me, it was a true showing that Mr. Pilkington is really concerned about helping people with crohns disease. I would like to personally thank Mr. Pilkington and his wife for being so cordial and friendly when they did not have to be, and, I would like to thank him for being concerned about my cousins health. Thank you Mr. Pilkington.I appreciate the time you spent with me and I will recommend you and your book to everyone and anyone that I know that has crohns disease
Letter From The Honorable J.D. Hayworth to Robert Pilkington I appreciated receiving your book The Complete Crohni Handbook, and have added it to my personal library. You're right about the fact that an understandable book for the layperson was needed, and I thank you for stepping forward to fill that void. Dealing with Crohn's Disease is a hardship that the rest of us cannot comprehend, and your determination to live each day with happiness and a positive attitude is a true lesson in life. Please accept my best wishes, and may God bless and keep you. Sincerely, J.D. Hayworth |
