4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to sum up this book.
Self pity is a sin, give it to God and get over it. This really helped me and is an easy and simple idea, but I do think that depression can go deeper than the author covers and it is not always so simple to do. I do believe that medicine is needed in some cases since there are brain chemicals messed up from years of wrong behavior. this book is inexpensive and I do recommend it is tried and followed first. It is cheaper than DRS, medicine or counseling and does not have the side effects. this is a book with a christian stance so will manly help those that believe in Jesus Christ. you never know though just try it out. is easy to read and short.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Therapy
"It is not uncommon for suicide to be the final attempt to rid oneself of the awful tyranny of depression." ~ pg. 21

If you have tried secular therapy for depression and it hasn't worked there is hope. Tim LaHaye offers a biblical approach that is very healing. Do you experience insomnia, lethargy, loss of appetite, loss of sex drive, anxiety, anger, fear, irritability, hostility, boredom, suicidal thoughts, hopelessness, weepiness or self-pity? Then you may be really depressed!

Tim LaHaye claims that by using his formula you will never be depressed again. The only incurable person is one who refuses to see that mental attitude is part of the problem.

What struck me as absolutely true is that many times depression is brought on by anger. Tim LaHaye believes anger is a sin and I also believe that to be true. Normally I'm offended by something, become angry and the next thing I know I'm feeling sorry for myself and I go through a period of depression, which can last for two weeks. Before reading this book I had not really connected all the dots. But after reading "How to Win Over Depression" I became very aware of what my problem might be. The author puts it this way:

Insult or Injury + Anger x Self-pity = Depression.

"Anger is the sin that besets more Christians and probably causes more spiritual defeat than any other sin." ~ pg. 97

This makes a lot of sense. While there are mental components of depression Tim LaHaye also believes you could be experiencing an improperly functioning thyroid gland. He doesn't really talk about very many medical treatments besides a short section on drug therapy and electrotherapy. This book was originally written in the 70s and was updated in the 90s. There are now much more effective treatments for depression so this book might benefit from another update.

Some of the most interesting parts of the book include:

How each decade of life influences your susceptibility to depression
Postpartum Depression
Physical fitness and depression
The Results of the Christ-Controlled Life
The difference between Discouragement, Despondency and Despair
Six Things that Influence Your Subconscious Mind
How depression is handled by the Four Basic Temperaments
Depression and Music
How to help children avoid depression
How to help a friend or family member who is depressed

"The human mind is so constructed that if we protract bitterness and hatred toward someone, these negative emotions will ultimately destroy us." ~ pg. 214

To be honest, I think this book will mostly benefit depressed Christians who are either sinning or have developed negative thinking patterns. Tim LaHaye goes to the heart of the matter and discusses the importance of victorious Christian living.

While a belief in God can surely help I think there are many times when medication is truly needed so you can get back to the right mindset and think clearly. If you are depressed and want a spiritual solution then I urge you to buy this book and to experience freedom from despair. As someone wise once said: "Understanding the problem is half the battle."

~The Rebecca Review

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a good read, but was written in the 70's
I love Tim LaHaye, and I really enjoyed this book. But I didn't realize it was written the year I was born. I feel the basics are the same, but a lot has changed in all these years. I'd still recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read for anyone in depression. So helpful
Older book, but the lesson learn so valuable.I would recommend it if you have depreewion or know someone that has depression it is a must read and must apply book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Human Design
I love this book, have already spent many happy hours with it and will spend many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
I found the subject matter very enlightening and fascinating. So did a friend that I shared thebook with.I found the type of depression that I had in the book.It was very helpful in my recovery from mental illness.

2-0 out of 5 stars You Can Do Better
If, like me, you struggle with depression, you can do much better than this book.

First and foremost, I must say that I find the authors' endorsement of the Transcendental Meditation religious-organization/movement/cult to be most disappointing.

Transcendental is merely one of many forms of mantra meditation. Most can be learned for free via the local library and the internet, but, if you want to learn the "TM technique," your experience will essentially amount to paying a ridiculous amount of money for a "special" mantra. There are many "free" forms of mantra meditation out there, and the claim that mantra meditation is the best sort of meditation is certainly debatable. The authors of this book, instead of teaching you anything about meditation themselves, basically tell you to "go learn Transcendental Meditation." The authors tell you that Transcendental Meditation is the only type of meditation that has been extensively scientifically evaluated for efficacy...but this is simply not true. Given the authors' bias towards this religious movement...I cannot help but distrust everything else that they say for fear of some ulterior motive or agenda.

Next we have the Yoga portion of this book. I expected the authors to explain many more yoga postures, but they didn't. They explain (w/ nifty diagrams, i must say) two cycles of yoga postures: sun salutation and moon salutation. Cool. I'm no expert on yoga, but...since "yoga" is supposed to be one third of this book's method for creating happiness, I expected a bit more. Actually, a lot more.

With meditation and yoga down, we have one more to go: Ayurveda. Ayurveda is...a "traditional" (alternative) medicine native to India. Now, I'm definitely no champion for the western pharmaceutical sort of health care...but I'm definitely no champion for superstition either. A bit of googling shows that there have been issues with toxic chemicals being found in traditional herbs used in Ayurveda. Advice pertaining to breathing and diet is really just common sense...and is nothing unique to the Ayurveda tradition.

Much of this book consisted of the authors trying to apply bits and pieces of modern scientific knowledge to the ancient belief system of Ayurveda, and then claiming, "Look! Members of this superstitious tradition already knew this stuff thousands of years ago." Fundamentalist groups inside Christianity, Islam, and other Eastern traditions are all guilty of using this tactic. Especially since much of the science that they talk about pertains to the highly complex field of quantum physics, I cannot help but suspect that much of what they say is pseudoscience.

In the end, what do we have? A book that claims to resolve depression and create happiness in three ways: meditation, yoga, and Ayurveda. They don't teach you a thing about meditation, but instead refer you to a ridiculous religious organization. The amount of actual yoga that they teach you is quite small. And, finally, Ayurveda is a superstitious system comprised of mostly common sense techniques that can be found elsewhere (especially in the age of the Internet) for free. Quite frankly, this book is ridiculous. I fear you would have better luck curing your depression by reading the copious amounts of absurd occult material on Amazon and the Internet: the occultists, at least, never run short of rituals to recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great alternative to using drugs
This gives lots of information on diet, herbs, and practices.
To aid you in lowering your depression, like any new venture.
I takes a while to feel results, usually other will see the
changes before you do. Positive feed back form other works
wonderfully, remember to set realistic goals. Its like putting
one foot in front of the other. Little bye little you will
break down your wall of depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of information in one book...
I haven't read this entire book yet,but I have been skimming it using it more as a reference for certain things and have been pleased with what I have found. I have really appreciated that the author has compiled the information on possible helps, but does not seem to have personal bias of his own.I was also very pleased that the side effects or drawbacks of these natural "cures" were also listed to help me make an informed decision of my own.I would definitely recommend adding this to your library if this is an issue you deal with.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book on depression
If you're looking to treat depression without using drugs, this is the book to get.The book is packed with almost every type of therapy known to cure depression. If there's any academic research on the subject, Baumel mentions the study and also tells us whether it's an uncontrolled or controlled study (something I appreciate as an academic). He usually explains how the study was conducted in enough detail that it can be replicated at home. This means that he included supplement dosages and length of time needed to see results. He also mentions how to purchase St. John's Wort and light therapy devices, which could save hundreds of dollars.

The way to use this book is to read the therapy, see if it matches your symptoms, decide whether you're willing to make the commitment (e.g., am I willing to take B6 for the next 6 months?), and then to try it.I had to try several different therapies until I found ones that worked for me.If one didn't work for me, I would read another section of this book and choose a new therapy to try.One problem with the book is that it covered some therapies in limited detail, and sometimes I needed to look up additional information in other sources.

Before getting this book, I tried looking up information online, but there was too much noise rather than real information to get any use out of what I was reading. This book cut through the noise and gave a concise summary of therapies that I could use to help myself.

In summary, the book is well-researched and an excellent resource.Using this book plus some free online information, I cured my moderate chronic depression in three months without drugs.Thank you, Syd Baumel, for writing this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fixes a lot of myths, a must have for Dr's and smart people
This is defintely an overall positive book on a very negative topic. The author here explains a lot of different ways that you can get the serotinin back to normal without having to deal with drug therapy.

The one problem about this book is that at times it is hard to get thru. The author throws in a lot of information that I'm sure a lot of us wont understand. I wish it was just a little more simplified. FOr example, in one chapter, he explains how a vitamen b6 can be more effective then an antidepresent in treating severe depression. However, he doesnt list the dosage or the amount of vitamen b6 that might be required to take. (that can be a bit of a problem for some).

Yet, this book is amazingly written, anaylized, and hopeful. Its good to know that someone really researched all of these facts and figures. He had a much different outlook on the whole deal as he broke down several vital stastics that the mass media and drug conpanies would never want to admit.

Despite its uplifting appeal, This is more of a book for a professional therapist rather then a client. I'd suggest for the client to read some important parts of this book to the therapist. A lot of this information is complicated and since Syd doesn't list the dosages and the "How exacltys" to get rolling on the correct bandwagon. Almost all of these methods are hard to persue solely.

Butagain this is a good book and I hope it gets more recongition then it has gotten in drugged america.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST OF THE CHOICES
As a psychologist wanting my clients to be educated on the biochemistry of depression and possible solutions, I have found this to be the best of all the alternatives I have read.It discusses all the treatments rather than focusing on one alone, as many books do.It is well written, easy to understand, and treats the reader as if he or she is intelligent enough to grasp a good deal of information.I think this book would help everyone in therapy, and would also help therapists in their attempts to help. ... This book has enough pictures that you would easily be able to locate pattern , although there is no full history as in the bigger book vs. the pocket guide , this is an excellent reference for starters, the back of the book has 12 pages of reproductions and how to tell them apart , the new photo legends helps as in you no longer have to guess is that the waste bowl or the cereal bowl , i would highly recommend this book small enough for travel and to kep near the computer so you can make an informed decision on what piece to buy

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a flea-market tote
The authors have written extensively about Depression glass collecting and some of the hardcovers are quite specific and weighty. Collectors and libraries seeking more affordable, toteable and general values and identification guides will find the 16th updated edition of Pocket Guide to Depression Glass & More 1920s-1960s an excellent pick. It pairs an organization by maker with color photos of typical glassware lines, and the latest prices arranged by glassware color. Perfect for a flea-market tote.

Product Description
Between 1929 and 1945, two great travails were visited upon the American people: the Great Depression and World War II. This book tells the story of how Americans endured, and eventually prevailed, in the face of those unprecedented calamities.
The Depression was both a disaster and an opportunity. As David Kennedy vividly demonstrates, the economic crisis of the 1930s was far more than a simple reaction to the alleged excesses of the 1920s. For more than a century before 1929, America's unbridled industrial revolution had gyrated through repeated boom and bust cycles, wastefully consuming capital and inflicting untold misery on city and countryside alike.
Freedom From Fear explores how the nation agonized over its role in World War II, how it fought the war, why the United States won, and why the consequences of victory were sometimes sweet, sometimes ironic. In a compelling narrative, Kennedy analyzes the determinants of American strategy, the painful choices faced by commanders and statesmen, and the agonies inflicted on the millions of ordinary Americans who were compelled to swallow their fears and face battle as best they could.
Both comprehensive and colorful, this account of the most convulsive period in American history, excepting only the Civil War, reveals a period that formed the crucible in which modern America was formed.

The Oxford History of the United States

The Atlantic Monthly has praised The Oxford History of the United States as "the most distinguished series in American historical scholarship," a series that "synthesizes a generation's worth of historical inquiry and knowledge into one literally state-of-the-art book. Who touches these books touches a profession."
Conceived under the general editorship of one of the leading American historians of our time, C. Vann Woodward, The Oxford History of the United States blends social, political, economic, cultural, diplomatic, and military history into coherent and vividly written narrative. Previous volumes are Robert Middlekauff's The Glorious Cause: The American Revolution; James M. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (which won a Pulitzer Prize and was a New York Times Best Seller); and James T. Patterson's Grand Expectations: The United States 1945-1974 (which won a Bancroft Prize).Amazon.com Review
You can think of Freedom from Fear as the academic'sversion of The GreatestGeneration: like Tom Brokaw, Stanford history professor DavidM. Kennedy focuses on the years of the Great Depression and the SecondWorld War and how the American people coped with those events. Butthere the similarities end--and, in terms of the differences, onemight begin by noting that the historian's account is over twice thesize of the journalist's.

Whereas Brokaw made use of extensive interviews, Kennedy relies onpublished accounts and primary sources, all meticulouslyfootnoted. This academic rigor, however, does not render the bookdull--far from it. Certainly the subject matter is interesting enoughin its own right, but Kennedy offers attention-grabbing turns ofphrase on nearly every page. He also unleashes someconvention-shattering theses, such as his revelation that "the mostresponsible students of the events of 1929 have been unable todemonstrate an appreciable cause-and-effect linkage between the Crashand the Depression" and his subsequent argument that, although it madeorder out of chaos, the New Deal did not reverse the Depression--that,he says, was the war's doing. All in all, Freedom from Fearcompares favorably to its companions in the multivolume Oxford Historyof the United States in both its comprehensive heft and its vividreadability. --Ron Hogan ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I will rate it five stars because I want recommendations based on it, but...
... the fact is that I'm halfaway through this book, and I see in it a kind of closet militant neocon view, a tendency, e.g., to exonerate Herbert Hoover from its all-too-obvious failures and to portray FDR as a muddled pragmatist - which of course he was, and in that resided his main merits, in that it allowed a scion of the American aristocracy to act against the narrow interests of his own class and age. Also, there are things in this historical period that simply aren't mentioned: as a Brazilian, I noticed that the issue of American-Latin American relations in the period is simply not mentioned or will get only the most scant account, "Brazil" or "[Getulio]Vargas" - and with it the all-too-important question of the airbases in NE Brazil and their relevance to the war effort in the Atlantic - simply not being in the Index. The History of the American Left and its relation to the New Deal is simply dismissed, the author repeating again and again a jejune comment on the law-abiding character and passitity of the American masses. In short, an ennormous book, full of information, and with an obvious political ax to grind.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great book--defective Kindle edition
I was well into this book when I received an email from Kindle telling me that the book was defective, they sent me a new copy---also defective. The book is still

on the Kindle inventory--it should be pulled until the publisher corrects the defect---

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom from Fear, by David M. Kennedy
Excellent, scholarly writing. A pleasure to read, this book will be a permanent part of my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of turbulent times
David Kennedy does a superb job of detailing the sociological and economical issues of 1930's America. There isn't much to be said than what hasn't been said already. One can see why it was awarded the Pulitzer.

But I do have criticism of the book. His take on the US "provoking" Japan is unbalanced. yes, the US did certain things that can be said to have drawn Japan's ire. But they were in done in response to aggressive acts by Japan. Japan all throughout the 1930's had displayed a disregard for international law that was on par with Hitler. The Kwantung Army's unauthorized invasion of Manchuria, the departure from the League of Nations, Peking Incident in 1937(the real start of the Pacific War),and the border conflict with the USSR in 38-39' were all acts of aggression that had to be addressed.

Japan like Germany, used valid disputes that could and should have been resolved peacefully, to justify policies of expansion at the expense of other nations. Japan's anti-colonialist rhetoric was a mere cover for the installament of colonialism directed by Japanese--similiar to what Al Queda has done.Tyrannical regimes throughout history have highjacked legitimate grievances for their own designs. We saw that with North Vietnam, China under Mao, Russia under Lenin..we should always be leery of those who profess altrutistic purposes for it is exceedingly rare that any nation or group of persons goes to war without some personal benefit at stake.

Furthermore The Japanese were no less dismissive and disdainful of the peoples of Asia than Britain was.See how the Japanese treated the Chinese. From the raping and pillaging of Nanking to the grotesque practices of Unit 731 to the sadistic impulse to get the peoples of Saipan and Okinawa to kill themselves because of a lie.

Yet, Mr. Kennedy would have us believe that it was the US's fault for war. What a gross misrepresentation of the facts.

Mr. Kennedy then goes on to castigate the US for the terror bombings of Tokyo and the Atomic bomb dropping, saying that Japan was "already defeated". Really? Those that mattered in Japan didn't think so(i.e.the military) In fact, if it were not for the intervention of the Emperor AFTER the droppings of the bombs, Japan would still have been fighting. As even he noted, Japan still had significant capability to inflict a great deal of pain.2 million men under arms, 5,000 kamikizes, and the potential use of hundreds of thousands of civilians as human bombs in a bloodbath that would make Iraq look like an sideshow

He infers that it was the US's demand for unconditional surrender that put Japan in this corner(once again blaming the US for Japan's actions in the face of facts that suggest otherwise) But again, as he even he noted, Japan's military--those who were really in power--wanted to a fight to finish. This was reflected in their absurd terms of peace. The basically wanted a events to stop where they were. No changes at all.

Needless to say, no President could have survivedpolitically acquiencing to such terms.

The fact is that Mr. Kennedy and others who criticize these decisions operate in the security of homes decades after the events happened in positions where they are reponsible for no lives but their own. As for most critics of these wartime strategies, he has no military credibility whatsover for anyone to take his critique seriously. What it amounts to is the same self righteous moralizing one gets from academics who were not there and thus had nothing on the line. They were were not the Marines, Midshipmen, and GI's who would have to gone into Japan. They were not the political leaders who staked not only their political survival, but infinitely more important, the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans upon the defeat of Japan. Truman was placed in an extraordinarily difficult situation from a moral and ethical standpoint. He had to measure the lives of Americans versus that of Japanese. As an American, he had only one choice.Such is the universal cruelty of war.

In order to be forthright, I will note that I am a grandson of a Marine wo served in the Pacific so I am emotionally invested in the subject the decision to drop the a-bomb. I will never apologize for it saved my grandfather from having to undergo the horrors of combat as well as saved his life. He had a wife and a son to come home to. He would begat three more children--including my father. Who knows what would have happened if he had to go into Japan.

"Freedom from Fear" is a great book. I know its hard to tell from the above criticism, but overall it is excellent. I strenously disagree about he conclusions over some military aspects, but that is a matter of opinion, not a judgment of the quality of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great first half of the book
I've been working my way thru the oxford history of the US and this one wasn't one of my favorites. The first half of the book that delt with 1929 until the start of WWII was very insightful and interesting. The coverage of the war left me desiring more. I've read several of these oxford books now and they are usually page turners but this one felt heavy and just didn't seem to convey the history in usual flow from this editor. The thing I love about these books is the ability to uncover some real pearls of interesting facts.Well, it's still worth reading but not at the same level as the others. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't just complain in your diary.Use it to help you recover!
I am surprised that this fantastic book has only 1 review.I just found it when I was wandering among the bookshelves in a local book store. As a patient living with depression I am not unfamiliar with cognitive behavioral therapy.I tried it for a while to deal with my anxiety but the book I was using back then was a bit too academic, although Overcoming Depression does use some of the same terminology and techniques.

I think one of the worst parts of depression is the shame associated with admitting that you have something wrong with your thought patterns.Ironically, this kind of thinking spirals in on itself and makes your depression worse.I was grateful to the author for pointing out that animals in captivity can also become depressed for many of the same reasons as humans. He points out the biological and evolutionary causes of depression and offers a very convincing approach to untying the Gordion knot of emotions that come with depression. He mentions self-compassion and a whole body (psycho-bio-social) approach to dealing with your depressive mindset.

Of course not everyone relates to the same author the same way and it could just be that my depression fits his therapy better than other authors. But I can say that I found his writing style to be "highly accessible...very readable and extraordinarily useful" as it says on the jacket cover.Using this book with a good therapist and with or without drugs, I think should help a number of people pull themselves out of the quagmire that is depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars compassionate and intelligent
I must have looked through dozens of books when I was first diagnosed with depression. This one is absolutely the best. Insightful and caring without being swarmy or condescending (why do so many authors treat people withdepression like they are children?). You'll see yourself in this book--Iknow I did. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Help for anxiety
I read the older version of this book and also this one.The new one is much more thorough.I really loved it.So many times, the automatic answer is medication and this offers a way to combat depression and anxiety through meditation on the word of God, and also through herbals and vitamins and exercise etc. It's a great book and I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars There is only One Bible, and that is The Holy Bible.
This book was quite informative, but little too much of not important information is included. It made me tired, I was trying to figure out what the author really is saying.

4-0 out of 5 stars very imformative
It was vety informative and helpful. Iam in my third week taking the natural supplementaion suggested and now starting to feel some improvements.Glad I purchased this cd.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Big Help
The book is an easy read filled with helpful and useable tools from Dr. Colbert. He includes reasons and definitions of anxiety and depression which aids you in understanding what you or a loved one may be going through. In addition he offers many helpful tools that you can use to feel better quickly, including but not limited to various scriptures from the bible. Dr. Colbert's books are all biblically based and I highly recommend them even if you are not a bible believer or reader. The only thing that disappoints me is the cost of natural supplements, which he can't help, but he does recommend them as a tool in coping with unhealthyness. If I were financially able I would try the supplements, unfortunately I am not. To those of you in the same boat as I am in, I suggest sticking with the "free" tools as he suggests, especially reading your Bible daily, and researching it for scriptures that you can confess over yourself as well as encouraging yourself.Again, even if you don't believe in God or the Bible, what have you got to lose.I'd rather do something and get a little, than do nothing and continue with nothing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Its detailed and specific for those of us who are looking for alternatives in treating depression and anxiety!
Its full of all natural things to try in treating depression and anxiety. Its a quick read, very practical to understand and full of wisdom on treating depression and anxiety without drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars HONEST and INSIGHTFUL
Thank you for your story in an honest and insightful manner.
My hat's off to you...... we need more honesty like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and thought-provoking
I have suffered with major depression for over 16 years now, but was officially diagnosed with depression just a couple short weeks ago. The title of this book is what immediately caught my attention. I knew I had to find a way to read it. I decided to check to see if my local library had a copy. It didn't. But I was able to get a copy from a public library in another city through inter-library loan.

I saw myself so often in this pages of this book. It made me feel less alone. Reading Ms. Thompson's book was like having an intense personal conversation. This book is extremely well written. Ms. Thompson has some great insights. I love her brutal honest. She gives an honest and complete disclosure. She talks openly about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I would highly recommend this book to people who suffer with depression themselves. But I would also recommend it to those who are struggling to understand the struggles of a friend or family member who struggles with depression. There are things in this book that caused me to think about my own situation in a new way. Some of her insights are profound. It couldn't have been easy for Ms. Thompson to write this book. After all, she was a well-known journalist. She was risking her career by writing with such brutal honesty. But I am so glad that she was able to overcome her fear of rejection. She has done all of us, especially those of us who suffer with major depression, a great service. I am so thankful for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best personal account of depression I've ever read
Like other great heroes, Tracy Thompson probably does not consider herself heroic.Nonetheless, she is very much a hero of mine."The Beast" helped me soldier through the blackest days of my life, for which I will be forever grateful to Ms. Thompson.

"The Beast" is an exceptional and excellently written description of a deeply private, highly accomplished woman's journey out of a dark night of her soul.

If you suffer from depression or if you wish to better understand depression in order to support a loved one, I encourage you to read "The Beast."

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books abot Depression I have ever read
This is a book from the inside out, meaning the author writes well about the subject because it comes from within. I have read several books about depression, and this is the one that has impressed me the most. Honest, well-written, and it tells it like it is. At times I found myself disagreeing with the author's actions (but who am I to judge) as if she was a character (see, it reads like a good book, a novel even, definitely not self-help and never ever patronizing), but I always appreciated her honesty and "straightford-ness." Somehow I found this book at the time I needed it the most, when I had given up all hope of getting better. I'm still not convinced I will, but this book has me rooting for the author. I am ever grateful and thankful it exists.

If you suffer from depression, just want to know more about it, or someone you love suffers from it, please READ THIS BOOK. Most of the time, in anthologies and even some "memoirs," I think: this person has no idea what they are talking about, I can't relate. Not here. This book is accessible and, I truly believe, helpful to anyone who reads it. Do yourself a favor and read this book. It is an asset to the field. And, subject not withstanding, it's a good book on its own. In other words, as a memoir it is interesting, entertaining, and you'll slow down your reading just to make it last longer (and to me, that's often the mark of a good book and an excellent storyteller). Best of luck to the author. And for anyone who reads this book because they "need" it, I get it. More importantly, so does the author. Good luck, then, to all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for those who suffer
I read this book shortly after it was released. My first thought was "Wow, someone understands how I feel."It is an excellent book for those around us who do not understand depression and the mental and physical problems that accompany it.I have read this book several times.I have also recommended it to many including my counselor.Tracy Thompson helped remove the stigma associated with mentai illness. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for medical depression
I have no idea what the other people who reviewed this book were smoking. This book is very shallow and not for serious medical depression.I was very disappointed and can't recommend it to anybody suffering from clincal depression.Don't waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go ahead and buy it
This book is VERY helpful. It's both scripturally and medically educating. To complement each day's reading, in the back of the book are daily perforated cards with the scripture and memory joggers for the day.Well-written by 2 men who still face depression, but don't let it overtake them.I'm on day 22 today. The card says "LifeFilter 22 / I Can Dilute My Depression through Sharing / "Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14).On the back it says "Today / 1. Remeber: God does not want me to be alone in this world. That's why he is always with me. / 2. I resolve to leave isolation and share meaningfully with some positive, wise Christians. / 3. If necessary, I will find a godly counselor and let him/her partner with me in overcoming my depression." It's a cool approach and has taught me a lot. This and "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" are the books that have helped me the most. That along with medication, counseling, time, and talking things out with friends. There is hope. You want there to be hope. You can have a life again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book On Conquering Depression Out There
First I'd like to say that if I could give more than 5 stars, I would for this book. This book is a wonderful book on how to conquer depression, an illness that has plagued me for over 9 years. It is written by two professionals who both are strong Christians and both have suffered from depression which makes you know they understand what you are going through and there is hope. I also appreciated the fact that I didn't have to sift through what I felt was Scriptural and what I felt wasn't as this book is very Biblically based and glorifies God throughout the whole book. If you are suffering, have suffered, or know someone who is suffering from Depression please purchase this book for them. I only wish I had found it years ago when I went through my first major depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!
This book is really great! When I was first diagnosed with depression, I didn't understand a lot about it.This book really helped me to understand what was going on with me emotionally and understand what was chemically going on in my body. When the authors say they understand where you're at, they really do!They've been there too. From a Christian perspective, this book is very bibically based. It is the best book I've found on depression yet, at least from a Christian perspective.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent work - well done!
Thank you Mark and Bruce for putting together the book "Conquering Depression".I believe it to be the best and most practical book I have ever read on the subject. For once I have found a book outlining a workable program, that develops tangible skills, and that forges and sharpens mighty weapons to defeat and overcome depression.A book that addresses the tri-part nature of man: his spirit, his soul (mind, will and emotions) and his body.I am convinced that should people who suffer the dreadful effects of despair and depression follow the 30 day program outlined in your book, they will be empowered to overcome and defeat their depression.Again, well done ! ... Product Description

In The Optimistic Child, Dr. Martin E. P. Seligman offers parents, teachers, and coaches a well-validated program to prevent depression in children. In a thirty-year study, Seligman and his colleagues discovered the link between pessimism -- dwelling on the most catastrophic cause of any setback -- and depression. Seligman shows adults how to teach children the skills of optimism that can help them combat depression, achieve more on the playing field and at school, and improve their physical health.

As Seligman states in his new afterword for this edition, “Teaching children optimism is more, I realized, than just correcting pessimism . . . It is the creation of a positive strength, a sunny but solid future-mindedness that can be deployed throughout life -- not only to fight depression and to come back from failure, but also to be the foundation of success and vitality.”

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to raise balanced children!
This book was purchased based on my father's suggestion.
As I have a one year old he thought it was a great tool to understand and guide baby's behaviours and to raise balanced children.
The many examples in the book help understand how to better handle challenging situations and how to impnac positevely our children's life. I am so glad I bought it and I will raccomend to all the ones that what their children to have the ost positive attitude in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective in helping middle school parents and children
I am a 6th grade counselor in a private school. After reading this book I used it to prepare a workshop and to help several families abandon child management systems that were highly stressful and unproductive. The workshop got very high ratings and requests for follow ups. Several families reported a significant improvement in their quality of life following interventions based on Dr. Seligman's ideas.

I believe that Dr. Seligman has good intentions when he applies this book to depression but that this emphasis limits the book's potential. It has much broader value and can help almost any family improve the middle school and teen years experience. I am looking forward to helping many more members of our community with the use of this tool.

If you are having difficulty with the 11 to 15 year old developmental process or you just simply want to look at some really good ideas this is a book for you. It is an easy read and well detailed. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Build lifelong resilience
This book is great for parents who want their children to grow up with an optimistic attitude.Wish I had this advice when mine were small.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
I like Dr. Seligman's theory on positive explanatory style.Parents read this book first and work it into your child's daily life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Its a lot of "pie in the sky"
It's a lot of "pie in the sky" and no real hard data/science.The book claims to have "real/hard data", but when it is compared to a non-soft science field, its claims don't hold water.

One my larger issue is if their program taught children to be optimistic, or just taught them to answer questions (their tests) optimistically.I.E. Giving the researchers the answers that they want to hear.

When raising a child you basically have to "try your best, and hope for the best".

Product Description
Real help, from women who've been there.

After she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl, Sandra Poulin felt like crying. And she did-for months. But they weren't happy tears-Sandra felt worthless, could hardly sleep, and had thoughts of death. Like too many mothers around the world, Sandra had no idea that this common but baffling condition had a name: postpartum depression.

What kind of mother, people wonder, could feel depressed after having been so richly blessed with a baby? The answer: every kind, women from all walks of life, from all over the world, young and old. And here, in a unique collection, are their stories of battles with PPD, with intimate details about the symptoms, the struggles, and the strategies that helped them emerge victorious.

Written by mothers, for mothers, this collection is an uplifting, enlightening- and perhaps even lifesaving- book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great if you are suffering or have suffered postpartum depression
I definitely recommend this book for anyone that has experienced or is experiencing postpartum depression. I wish I would have had this book when I had my first child. After reading this book I even gave it to my husband to read and he was able to get some valuable information from it as well. I think it helped me understand that I was not alone in my struggle and removed the mystique of what postpartum depression is exactly. It helped my husband understand what I had gone through and helped him to play a more supportive role in my future pregnancies which I think was key in me not going through postpartum depression again. Now when I hear of a first time mom being pregnant I always recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding help for the suffering mother or mother to be
It was such a relief to be able to read something that was so honest and had real life stories of other mother's experiences with PPD. To know you're not the only one who feels this way and that it can be treated or possibly avoided was so comforting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Goodness for this book
Thank Goodness for this book. While PPD (Post Partum Depression) has gotten a lot of coverage in the media........I was totally unaware of "Perinatal Mood Disorders" (Mood Disorders that occur during pregnancy).I suffered from Panic Attacks during my fifth month of pregnancy, and the experience was very upsetting to have to deal with during what you think is supposed to be a happy time.My doctors seemed to confuse "Panic Attacks" and "Axiety Attacks".Everyone kept asking me if I was worried about the baby or my ability to be a parent. That was so not what this was about. My first attack literally woke me up from sleep and my heart was beating furiously and my mind was racing, and I couldn't go back to sleep. The continuation of these types or episodes, coupled with my OB/GYN treating me like some kind of "head case" only perpetuated my fear about what was going on.I was really scared about what was happening to me, and fearful about the advice I was getting (to start taking anti-depressants during my pregnancy).Thankfully, my panic attacks stopped as abruptly as they started and I did not require any medication for the duration of my pregnancy. This book, and knowing I was not alone or "crazy" was a huge comfort to me during a very troubling time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book
This book is a quick and easy read. I read it after having suffered postpartum depression and was able to highlight several passages in the book of the exact things I thought, felt, or did. I only wish I had this book before I had the depression so I knew what to expect. It would have also been a valuable tool for my husband to have so he would have known what signs to look for. I would recommend it to anyone who has suffered, thinks they are suffering, or wants to know ahead of time what to look out for.

Product Description
Do events of the 1930s carry a message for today? Lessons from the Great Depression provides an integrated view of the depression, covering the experience in Britain, France, Germany, and the United States. It describes the causes of the depression, why it was so widespread and prolonged, and what brought about eventual recovery.

Peter Temin also finds parallels in recent history, in the relentless deflationary course followed by the U.S. Federal Reserve Board and the British government in the early 1980s, and in the dogged adherence by the Reagan administration to policies generated by a discredited economic theory—supply-side economics. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The key to prosperity is peace
In the middle of today's panic economics with a new massive depression lurking at the corner, we should read again the works of Peter Temin, the eminent specialist of the cataclysmic Great Depression of the 1930s in the Western World.

Initial shock
Building on his previous book (Did monetary forces cause the Great Depression?) where he brilliantly attacked Milton Friedman's analysis, he presents in these `Lionel Robbins Lectures' his overall view of the catastrophic event: the initial shock, the causes of the depression and the (too) late recovery.
What changed fundamentally the Western world politically and economically was the First World War. It changed completely existing demographics, agricultural and industrial production and capital movements.

Gold standard
But, after the war, political leaders returned to the `gold standard' ideology to resolve international commercial and financial problems. This regime imposed fixed values of national currencies in terms of gold. Balance of payments deficits had to be adjusted by deflation (a change in the domestic price level), not by devaluations (a change in the exchange rate).
When in 1929 a severe economic downturn arrived, the wrong medicine was administered: deflation and contractionary monetary policies (tight credit) which accentuated the downturn and, in fact, discouraged economic activity. The outcome was a massive Depression.

Recovery
The decline was halted by clairvoyant political leaders and economists who understood that governmental intervention (like public works) and easy credit were needed as countercyclical measures. They adopted `socialist' measures: public regulation or ownership of the basic economic activities (utilities, banking), wage fixing and the introduction of the welfare State (a safety for everyone).

M. Friedman, B. Bernanke, Smoot-Hawley tariff
Peter Temin criticizes M. Friedman's (the Depression was not caused by banking panics) and B. Bernanke's (banking failures did not decrease aggregate demand) analyses as well as those who see the Smoot-Hawley tariff as the main culprit (the fall in export demand was only a small part of the story).

Today, the political leaders have learned their lessons. By massive capital injections by the State and easy credit (zero interest rates) together with public investments, they try to avoid a monstrous depression (up to a fall of 30 % in certain industries).

This book is a must read for all economists and for all those interested in the history of mankind.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
Maybe this book is written for professional economists. If so, I doubt if it contains anything they don't already know. From a layman's point of view I find the book to be dull , pedantic ,and poorly wriiten .For instance this sentence, picked by opening the book to a random page,"The Credit Ansalt had unwisely operated during the 1920s as if the Hapsburg empire had not broken up."
The author seems more intent on promoting his own views of the Depressionand the advantages of socialism than in presenting a balancedview of an event that was due to many factors, most of which could be interpreted in several ways. Maybe I just expected too much but I was annoyed by his constant references to equilibrium , an idea that doesn't fit with the real world that is in a constant state of flux.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Study of the Great Depression: The Gold Standard is Largely to Blame
Peter Temin rigorously explains the economics of the Great Depression and the lessons to be learned from the economics of the Great Depression. He explains convincingly that the gold standard was mainly to blame for the Great Depression. It was a Federal Reserve contraction of the money supply that began a recession, and then it was the gold standard that turned it into a catastrophic depression. To be specific, the gold standard imposed a severe tightening of the gold standard, and stubborn efforts by political leaders in several countries to maintain the gold standard strangled the economy further.

The countries that left the gold standard quickly, such as Great Britain, recovered the soonest from the Great Depression. The countries that stayed on the gold standard recovered last. The countries that were not on the gold standard avoided the Great Depression!

This book is for economists or general readers with a strong interest in the period. Peter Temin established himself as one of the greatest economists of the Great Depression.

Also consider "Essays on the Great Depression" by Ben Bernanke, Chairman of the Federal Reserve.

4-0 out of 5 stars Taking the long view
Temin's account of the Great Depression differs in almost every from the standard texts.Austrian business cycles, monetary tightness etc. are all passed over as the author goes for the big picture....the long view of political history in Europe.

The Great Depression was the direct result, he says, of the breakdown of peace in the first decade of the twentieth century. The international spirit of co-operation that had existed throughout most of the second half of the 19th century evaporated with the European struggles for empire. So when crisis loomed in the late 1920s all the lifeboats were full of holes.Franco-German rivallry, the demise of the British Empire and isolationism in the United States all produced paralysis when leadership was needed most.

When leadership finally did arrive, it came in the form of social democracy and labour market rigidities which put a floor under the markets but extended the depression in ways not dissimilar to Japan in the 1990s.

If you like your economics filled with Keynes and history this is for you.If Friedman or Schumpeter is more to your taste, then this is worth reading just to see what the other side thinks.

Great stuff. ... Read more
