From the author: Chronic cavity wounds are not commonly seen in pediatrics, and little literature is available on their management. A pediatric patient with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDMS) who had a chronic cavity surgical wound with an enterocutaneous fistula presented a nursing challenge. The patient had complex medical and surgical problems that greatly influenced her ability to heal. Nursing management of the wounds had to be innovative and flexible to adapt to these challenges. Factors affecting the patient's wound healing included JDMS; decreased mobility; persistently low serum magnesium, zinc and albumin; malnutrition; infection; and prolonged glucocorticosteroid therapy. Nursing management of her complex wounds included the following strategies: absorption of excessive exudate, wound support, debridement, wound irrigation, wound bagging, healing by secondary intention, and control of hypergranulation.

5-0 out of 5 stars This will tug at your heart
Exposed is a story that will tug at your heart strings. This is a nice hard back book that is a quick read.

The story is that of the author's, Helen Leung, and her disease known as Dermatomyositis, and Dermatomyositis is one of a group of acquired muscle diseases called inflammatory myopathies. The disease, which has a somewhat severe onset, affects both children and adults. Females are more often affected than males, Dermatomyositis is characterized by a rash accompanying, or more often, preceding muscle weakness.Eventually, people have difficulty rising from a sitting position, climbing stairs, lifting objects, or reaching overhead. In some cases, muscles further away from the trunk of the body may be affected later in the course of the disease. Problems with swallowing (dysphagia) may occur. Occasionally, the muscles ache and are tender to the touch. Affected individuals may also feel fatigue and discomfort and experience weight loss or a low-grade fever.(Being a nurse had to explain a little of the facts of the disease so you can come to an understanding of this disease and its effects).

The story begins while Helen is at a young age, she discusses her somewhat abusive family life, her illness, and her diagnosis and the hardship and struggles and the attempts to cure her.She visited many physicians both in New York and China. As the years pass Helen begins to accept her illness. She is very courageous and overcomes her disease, even though she spends the high school years confined to a wheelchair. She is strong and her will to overcome all that she faces is amazing, she talks of other students starring and whispering, but determined to be strong she uses all their stares and whispers to full fill her dreams and desires to succeed against it all.

I highly recommend this compelling read, and commend such a strong lady, both her and her book get 5 stars, and her story is an inspiration to us all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
I was very excited to read this book. This memoir is about a young girl who grows up with dermatomyositis (dur-muh-to-mi-uh-SI-tis), which is an uncommon disease marked by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash.It is a very quick read at only 142 pages, but is very fascinating.

Helen is diagnosed with the disease when she is very young. She describes how she functions with not being able to walk and at times not even being able to hold up her head. She describes the feelings of her family and her frustration at not being able-bodied.At times it is very intense and you can feel the anger and the rage that Helen has for the world and why she questions God about why she got this disfiguring condition.

I found that a lot of the things that Helen railed against were some of the same things that I was unhappy about when I was younger. One of the things I could identify with was not having a date for the prom.A lot of teens don't go to their senior prom.I think, as does Helen, that we as a society have put too much pressure on going to it.She remarks that she felt alone many times in her life even when she was with many people.I have felt that way also.

Pick up this book so that when you meet someone in a wheelchair or who is "different" than you, you can put yourself in their place and make their life a little bit easier for them.EXPOSED is a good, quick read that will give you empathy for others.

3-0 out of 5 stars an engrossing read
If you are looking for a quick and easy read, that will leave your heart aching, I'd recommend you go get a copy of Exposed and sit down and read it.

The story is that of Helen, the author, and her life long struggle with the disease called dermatomyositis. The book starts with Helen at a young age in her borderline abusive family, moves on to her illness, her diagnosis and her parents' struggles and attempts to cure her.Throughout her childhood, she visited a mulititude of doctors; both in New York, and in China.

As Helen grows, so does her acceptance of her illness.Rather than succumb to it, she overcomes it.She goes through high school in a wheel chair, and while her peers aren't exactly kind to her, Helen uses their stares and whispers to fuel her desire to succeed.

Exposed is honest and raw; a tale about beating the odds that will stay with you for years to come. ... Read more

Product Description
Myositis refers to inflammation of the muscles ("MYO"means muscle and "ITIS" means inflammation). Myositis is a mysterydisease in several diseases:

Polymyositis (PM) means inflammation of many muscles.

Dermatomyositis (DM) means inflammation of many muscles and skin

Inclusion Body Myositis (IBM) means inflammation of many muscles with"Inclusion" (abnormal protein deposits) and vacoules (holes) in themuscle cells and fibers.Virtually 95% of physicians are unlearned about this chronic, lifetimemuscle disorder. So little information is given to the patients afterthey have finally been diagnosed, but offered no further informationabout the future expectations might be.

The four Myositis diseases have individual case reports from patientswith the diseases, telling how the disease affected them, theirfamilies, their working and the dark future that no physician had toldthem would happen.

The Myositis patients are telling their stories to help newlydiagnosed Myositis individuals learn more about the disease, what toexpect.Several Neurologists who have read the stories have said thebook will be a great teacher to the medical profession because thestories give a glimpse into the daily life, the philosophy on the mindand inner workings of the patient's body; whereas the medicalprofession can only ascertain what they learn through diagnosticprocedures. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book with real patient stories
I personally purchased this book after purchasing many Medical Textbooks dealing with Dermatomyositis, Polymyositis, Sjogrens, Psoriasis, and auto-immune diseases in general. Why, because I have these uncureable diseases and have been suffering with a more severe case for the past 3-5 years with no hope for a cure, no sign of remission, and still hoping for relief and a more mnormal life. My biggest problem has been getting my family, friends, and doctors to have some kind of idea what I am going through. I also had to deal with doctors who thought I was first imagining this and refering me to a psychiatrist instead of a rheumatologist or neurologist who could have started treating me a lot sooner and I would probably be able to use my muscles today.

This book has 50 of the greatest patient stories that can be applied to patients with all 385 Auto-immune disease and probably even cancer patients as well since these diseses are associated with cancer. Reading these stories will make a grown man tear up and have joy that I am not nuts, just depressed because of my pain and suffering. You will gain a better understanding of the Myositis diseases, patients who don't have all of the symptoms, patients who have most of the symptoms, and patients who have more symptoms above the medical definintions of the specific auto-immune diseases. For example when the doctor tells you that you have Polymyositis or Dermatomyositis and only the proximial muscles can be involved, and in fact you have the distal muscles also involved. Or when you are misdiagnosed with Polymyositis instead of Dermatomyositis because the doctors don't see the rash at its worse flaring time and finally you show up with Gottron Papules all over your knuckles, Helitope on your face (eyelids, bridge of nose), and V Sign on your neck and upper chest and then he tells you that is part of the Dermatomyositis, all you can say is Thank You for the new diagnosis. But I learned to understand why doctors proceed with caution on their diagnosis and then adjust as the disease progresses to be more defined signs.

Great book and in my opinion should be printed with a newer revision some day with more stories from those patients who can still write and provide insight to this kind of book.

Thank you to the patients, authors, and editors of such a great book.

This book was delivered as promised via Amazon.com. I could not put the book down for a few days until I read it. It told me everything I wanted to know about Autoimmune diseases and more, and gave me much more appreciation for my Rheumatologists Doctors Philip Sedrish and Marielisa Sedrish at Gulfcoast Rheumatology at Slidell Memorial Hospital. They have been doing everything like clock work with me and I have been a very trying case for especially for Dr Philip Sedrish. These doctors are definitely experts in Rheumatology and all the other Auto-Immune Neuromuscular and Skin Diseases such as (RA, PM, DM, IBM, Sjogrens, Scleroderma, Lupus, ALS, etc...) that go along with their specialty. They referred me to the best specialists: Dermatology - Dr Eric Tabor; Cardiology - Dr Ignatius Thomas; Pulmonology - Doctor Dennis Dale and Doctor Janine Parker; Opthamology- Dr David Slagle; Gastroenternology - Dr Anthony Albright. These doctors all work well with each other and me to address all my symptoms associated with Dermatomyositis, Sjogrens, and Psoriasis. Thanks to these doctors, I have not had to drive 100 miles a trip to the MDA Clinic at Children'sHospital in New Orleans or even further as may others end up doing.

Thank you to the authors of this book and my friends from The Myositis Association, Polymyositis and Dermatomyositis forum.

I recommend this book to anyone diagnosed with a Auto-Immune Disease and associated Cancer.

2-0 out of 5 stars testimonials from sufferers
This book is only testimonials from other sufferers. It will give you "ah hah" moments to let you know you are not alone with this affliction, but it doesn't really tell you anything to help your situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coping with a Myositis Disease
The Coping with Myositis disease is a great book & very informative.I had ordered this book for myself about a year or more ago & this one I bought for a friend. She was also exited about it.It's almot imposible to find information about Inclusion Body Myositis.

The quick delivery was amazing & especially around the holidays.Thank you very much for making this available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Coping with a Myositis Disease
This was a very interesting, although somewhat disheartening, book. It is a group of case studies told by the patients who suffer from myositis.Often the cases seemed quite hopeless, therefore, it was hard for someone also suffering the disease to have much hope. The book also should have been edited for grammatical mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic insight into Mysosis for a DM sufferer
There are very few publications out there providing supporting information for Myosis sufferers. This one provides a great insight into the disease as well as the specific variations ie (DM).The case studies are particularly interesting and useful. It's great to see how others are coping with their disease and how most are recovering well. This is an American publication, I have not managed to find any UK publications for this condition. ...
