5-0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker 30-minute meal for diabetes
I took out this book from the library before I purchased it.I was delighted with all the new ways to make quick meals.I purchased the book and have it out every day to review the colorful pages of the meals and pick out one or two a week to try.

2-0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker Did a Nice Book but could be better
I was able to find four recipes that were exciting to make.I am not an expert on this, but I thought that the book contained too much pasta and high fat to be appropriate for a diabetic diet. Some of the foods were a little too exotic or unusual for the average person in my opinion. There were lots of wonderful pictures and it was easy to read and understand.I also prefer to make all recipes from scratch, whereas this book uses some cereals or packaged items which may not be available in all stores.I really like the idea that Betty Crocker did write this book, and I hope that they do another book.It is good to be able to cook for the diabetics.Thank you very much, and enjoy cooking and reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Diabetic
The book is very good.Is Betty Crocker still alive or was it written by a ghost writer? All joking aside. The recipes are clearly written and you don't have to be Julia Child's to make them. For those of you that are stricken by diabetes you'll like this book. You will still have to exercise, take your pills or poke yourself with insuline but you'll eat better using these recipes. The order went through smoothly. I had to wait for the book yet amazon notified me of the delay and kept me informed as to when it was shipped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for diabeiics as well as those who are presently Hyporglycemic
This book is an outstanding resource and treatment guide for those suffering from Diabetes. It can dramatically prevent secondary complications from poorly regulated blood glucose levels. A must read for newly diagnosed diabetics and long term diabetics. Peter Germano Ph.DTAGS;Clinically informative, provides alternatives to information and dietary plans that are archaic and ineffective.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Dr. Bernstein's book is a great roadmap for Type II diabetics to follow. The only negative is his promulgation of artifical sweetners, which are very toxic. I hope in a future book he would consider promoting natural healthy alternatives such as Stevia.

5-0 out of 5 stars "GOLD STANDARD" on diabetes management

Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
Dr Richard K... Bernstein
2007 Revised version of 1997 book

Dr Bernsteins Diabetes Solution (Paperback)
1997

Left me first say that this is the best book on Diabetes that I have ever read.Because of this book, I went from an average blood sugar count of close to 200 mg/dl to closer to 100 mg/dl IN A WEEK'S TIME.While I am not a medical doctor I would say that this is the "GOLD STANDARD" on diabetes management. In fact, I intend to try to convince my doctor at the VA to read it.By reading it you could:
1st add years to your life
2nd save your toes from amputation
3rdsave your feet from amputation

And, in my opinion, prevent:
- Alzheimer's
- Kidney failure, and kidney dialysis, plus avoid
- Neuropathy and
- Blindness
All for less than $25.00.I'd say it was worth the price.

Here's some of what you can get:

PART ONE
Before You Start

1) Diabetes, the Basics
2) Tests. Baseline Measures of Your Disease and Risk Profile
3) Your Diabetic Tool Kit.Supplies you will need and where get them
4) How and when to measure blood sugar
5) The laws of small numbers
6) Establishing a Treatment Plan: The Basic Treatment Plans and How We Structure Them.

PART TWO
Treatment

1)The Basic Food Groups, or much of what you have been taught about diet is probably wrong.

I can't recommend this book high enough.I recommend it for anyone with Type I or II diabetes or even insulin resistance,

    5-0 out of 5 stars excellent time-saver
I chose this book specifically because the recipes are arranged in a weekly format, and provide a weekly shopping list. Most of the recipes are flavorful and easy to make.I also like the monthly dessert recipe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthy Calendar Diabetic Cooking
The book I ordered was delivered on time and I am pleased with my purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Menu Cookbook
I don't have diabetes.I just like menu cookbooks but it's hard to find one that's tasty and healthy. This book gives you a main dish and sometimes a side dish for every day of the year, but I was disappointed. Some of the main dishes are under 200 calories per seving with no side dish recommendations, much less a recipe for one.I even saw a few that were less than 150 calories. Is 150 calories a meal or a snack?I'm sure this is a valuable resource for people with diabetes, however be aware that you will often have to plan your own side dishes. You need to look at the calories per serving. For example, the first "meal" in September has 145 calories per serving. There is no side dish. The main dish for the next day has 327 calories per serving. Now this one does have a side dish, bring it up to 401 calories per serving.Go figure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good beginner's book
As someone who did not know how to dice an onion a month and a half ago, this book gave me some basic and tasty recipes that are simple to make and loved in our home such as the spicy sweet potato fries, crab tostadas, and tortilla soup. I've since learned how to handle a knife, and thanks to youtube videos, I can now dice an onion and julienne a bell pepper and a lot more. So I'll be moving on in my quest for new recipes, but some of the dishes in this book will remain a permanent fixture in our home. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where has this been all my life!!!!
As a working mom, I don't think I'm alone in feeling like "if only someone would tell me what to make for dinner, I wouldn't mind cooking". This book not only does that, it gives me a grocery list for each week's menus. I simply make a copy of the list, cross off what I already have at home and head off to the store! Knowing that we have a plan and all the ingredients are at home means no last minute stops at the grocery store or fast food for dinner.

Our family consists of my husband who is diabetic, a teenager who is trying to be a vegitarian and myself. Between work, school and family obligations we found ourselves grabbing fast food or going out to eat several times a week. Now with minimal planning we can have healthy meals at home. There are so many quick recipes in this book that we can often find a meal to fit into those nights where we are on the go or coming home late.

I have recommended this book to so many family and friends. These healthy recipes would be valuable to any family, not only those with a diabetic member. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Job Well Done
Real - Life Guide To Diabetes.......I think the book is absolutely wonderful. It's informative in a fun way it keeps your intersect, it's 2009. I don't have diabetes but my husband has Type 2 and I pick it up from time to time because I think I worry more about his health than he does.
Great job to Joy Pape and Hope Warsaw I wish them much success they deserve it. The girls left no stone unturned......Again Much Success Phyllis Shulman

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about diabetes in one place
The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes by Hope S. Warshaw and Joy Pape doesn't take its name lightly. It's chock full of practical, useful information you can integrate into your daily life right now. I've had diabetes for nearly six years and, even though I read everything I can about the disease, no one source has EVERYTHING you need to know all in one place. This book does. From exercise to medication to nutrition, it covers all the bases and then some. You have to think about what you're going to eat, when you're going to exercise, and when you're going to take your medicines. This book will show you how to create an optimum life plan and how to deal with things that come up that can wreak havoc with your plan, such as illness or travel.

The design of the book makes it easy to read. Each chapter has a "What You'll Learn" section right at the beginning. Scattered throughout the guide are sections like "By the Numbers," which provides important statistics; "Wonder," which answers questions about diabetes; and "Tips and Tactics," which tells you how to deal with many aspects of diabetes in plain language that's easy to understand. There's even a "Red Flag" section that provides warnings and cautions people with diabetes need to know.

This book is so comprehensive that you'll never have to search for most of the information again. I hope the American Diabetes Association and the two authors update the information regularly.

I think the best thing about this book is that it gives people with diabetes hope - hope that, even though they've been diagnosed with diabetes, they can still live a pretty normal life and reduce complications of diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best diabetes title in a long time...
It's been a while since I've read such a great title about diabetes. Certainly no other diabetes book I have reviewed is so well laid out, incorporating compelling visuals in full color to complement the easy-to-understand yet substantial content written by two of the most respected figures in today's diabetes education world.

The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes has something for everyone: those with type 2 diabetes (the majority of patients living with this chronic condition) as well as those with type 1 diabetes; those who have been recently diagnosed as well as those who've had diabetes for a while (but can use a refresher).

The three sections that make up The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes are proof that the authors know what they are talking about. The 21 chapters constitute a complete reference that touches on diabetes basics (dealt with in section 1, Build Your Strong Foundations), how to manage your diabetes through monitoring, diet, medication and lifestyle changes (covered in section 2, Create Your Real-Life Diabetes Plan) and an advanced section that touches on matters that range from sexuality and traveling with diabetes to health insurance and protecting your rights (discussed in section 3, When Life Happens).

All in all, this constitutes a must-read for all people touched by diabetes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous & helpful
The Eating Well Diabetes Cookbook has features that make it stand out as one of the very best diabetes cookbooks. First, there is an explanation and simplification of the carbo-counting necessary. The recipes follow these guidelines. Then there are two different levels of menu - 1,500 or 2,000 calorie menus. Also, recipes are marked for high-fiber, quick to prepare, etc.

All these features in addition to fabulous recipes. This is simply a great cookbook - the fact it's compatible with the diabetic diet just makes it better. Every meal I've tried so far has been delicious and tasty. They don't rely so much on "fake food" as they do on fresh taste. If you can only afford one basic Diabetes cookbook, I highly recommend this one above all others. I'm not diabetic but heard the diabetic diet is the most healthy. Now, I agree.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook for the Adventurous Cook
The scrumptious-looking cover belies the contents of this cookbook. There are very FEW recipes I would consider fixing, mainly because they contain ingredients I do not like. I have used "stickies" to mark pages that have some interesting recipes, or that I can alter to my taste. I recommend you check out cookbooks that you can visually peruse before purchasing, at your local bookstore.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Flavor and Easy Recipes
All of the recipes we have tried thus far have been terrific. They are simple and quick and full of flavor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The days when a diagnosis of diabetes condemned to a life of the bland and the unappetizing are long gone.
The days when a diagnosis of diabetes condemned to a life of the bland and the unappetizing are long gone. Compiled from the pages of 'Eating Well' magazine by Joyce Hendley and the publication's editorial staff, "The EatingWell Diabetes Cookbook: Delicious Recipes And Tips For A Healthy-Carbohydrate Lifestyle" fully lives up to the promise of its title by offering a culinary wealth of diabetes-friendly recipes that are as delicious as they are nutritious and dietarily sound. Beginning with the encouraging introduction that 'Eating Well: It's Not Dieting', followed by 'Diabetes 101: The Essential Facts', and 'Food Matters: Eating to Manage Diabetes', "The EatingWell Diabetes Cookbook" presents a compendium of information about calorie counts and menus as well as food and exercise diaries. Then the individual recipes are organized into chapters of 'Healthy Starts', Muffins & Breads, Snacks & Appetizers, Soups, Salads, Vegetarian Main Dishes, Chicken & Turkey, Fish & Seafood, Side Dishes, Sauces & Condiments, Desserts & Treats. The thoroughly 'kitchen cook friendly' recipes range from a Greek Potato & Feta Omelet; to a Spicy Mushroom & Rice Soup; to Grilled Rosemary-Scented Chicken; to Citrusy Couscous Salad with Olives; to a One-Bowl Chocolate Cake! Enhanced with a Glossary, a Resources list, 'Healthy Pantry Essentials', Ingredient Notes, Cooking tips, and an Index, "The EatingWell Diabetes Cookbook" is an ideal addition to personal and community library cookbook collections for diabetics -- and anyone else seeking to prepare and consume nutritionally healthy, appetite satisfying, palate pleasing meals.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I have found very few book on Diabetes that explain how and what to cook for a diabetes diet. This is one of them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly creative, fun, positive story for kids with Type 1
This story is really entertaining, funny, and yet educational too. It's one of the better books on this topic that I've seen!

3-0 out of 5 stars okay but better for small kids
GOt this for my son when he was 7.He was already to old for it.Good for a smaller kid if you read it to them and their attention span is long enough. I do thank anyone who writes a bookfor diabetic kids as there is so little of substance out there but sadly, this didn't do it for my (or the other) t1 I brought it for.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious and very cool!
The author of this book should get an award. It is very creative and the drawings are fabulous.Super funny and definitely puts a positive spin on Type 1 diabetes.I loved it, and sent copies to family, friends, and school staff.I also thought it would be a great way to break the ice with anyone who is making fun of a diabetic child at school.

Most of all, it helps our kids feel like superheroes (because they are) and has a good lesson about helping others all around the world who may not have the same medical amenities that we have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect book for any Diabetic Family
I could not keep myself from crying as I first read this book to my diabetic child, I kept getting severely choked up on many pages, and had a hard time finishing this story without sobbing. It is wonderfully written and illustrated in a fun comic book style.I wish we had this in our home right after diagnosis.A friendly way to explain diabetes to children, and to give strength and inspiration to a diagnosed child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book but for older kids
I was looking for a book to share with my daughter's Kindergarten class, to help them understand her diabetes. This book was a tad long for their attention spans. Still a fun book, so I will save it to share when she is older. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Xcellent BOOK!!!
This book explains the "mainstream medicine's theory" of diabetes very, very well. You are better off buying this book than going off and searching for all the information out there.I borrowed this book from the library before I bought it.Also, between this book and "There is a Cure for Diabetes" by Gabriel Cousens, they both cover the subject of Diabetes and treatment/cure as much as two books probably can.I haven't read too many other books on diabetes, but the ones I have read are pretty much useless and there's so much info in these two books that it's pretty much comprehensive.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but the book arrived in good time, was in the exact condition described in the product informatin and I appreciate getting it.Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars this book might save my life
It sounds a little over the top but I mean it. This book might save my life. Not that I have uncontrolled diabetes, I don't. I just have diabetes. But after reading this book I began following most of their diet and supplement recomendations and I've found that my numbers have been changing and stablizing for the good. The book is detailed enough with scientific information to give you an overview without being too technical for the average person. The recomendations they make are concrete, even specifying which brands to use for certain products which is an incredible time saver.
Why might it save my life? By following their plan I believe I'll lose weight, stablize my blood glucose, lower my blood pressure and be healthier overall. I'll revisit this review in six months and let you know how it going. Thank you Drs. Murray and Lyon, you've made this world a better place.

This book has been designed to help children with diabetes appreciate the importance of taking their insulin injections and being aware of what they eat. Although parents are of course primarily responsible for the care of their child s diabetes, it is important that the children themselves are aware that they too must take some responsibility. This book encourages children to follow the instructions given to them by their doctors and parents, to eat healthily, and to see their insulin injections as something brave that they do, that other children cannot! Instead of viewing diabetes and their daily injections as something negative, the story encourages them to think of it as something that sets them apart from their peers in a positive way. ... I learned from this book how my beta cells producing less insulin over time is completely normal for people who have had diabetes for some years. It is the progression of the disease. It is a chronic illness, which will never leave me. But controlling blood glucose levels is critical to halting the nasty complications of diabetes. Very informative and a great introduction for me to get serious about accepting my illness. I can't wait to read more and take action.

I ordered this book and several others like this one to help me figure out how to control my diabetes. The books are great. The ease of the ordering was fantastic and the books came very quickly. Thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I bought this book almost immediately when I was diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. It (along with general info from with web) got me acquainted with how I should eat with my diabetes, and made me feel more comfortable with my ability to cope with my condition.

This book contains a wealth of information on what kinds of things you can eat, as well as various tables and lists of things you can eat along with relevant data on each item in many cases.

Overall, this was an excellent book for me, and I am sure it would help others in my same situation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informatively Fair
Family memeber with diabetes currently came to reside within our household and not being sure of the disease we found this book a fair informative guideline to helping the family member with the control of their sugar and keep the other memebers lifes unchanged but helped us all eat healthier.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but there are probably better titles
The information in the book was okay, but the exchange lists and diet information we formatted poorly and were a little simplistic. That was the main reason I bought the book so I was a little disappointed. On the other hand, it did contain some good basic info.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource
This book stands out from others because goes beyond just telling you WHAT to do to manage your diabetes, it also tells you the WHY.By helping you understand the reasoning behind dietary and exercise guidelines, the author gives you the knowledge you need to make intelligent decisions when presented with situations not covered by guidelines alone. She seems to understand that everything isn't always black and white in life, and you have to make choices based on many factors.

I'm newly diagnosed.Since I'm not on any medications (and hope to keep it that way for as long as possible), the two tools I have to manage my diabetes are exercise and diet. This book addresses the diet aspect very well, while touching on the importance of exercise. It's not a scientific text, so it doesn't go into excruciating detail. It's an easy read. She helps you understand how the body works without diabetes, and then explains what happens differently when you have diabetes. You'll come to understand how different foods affect your blood glucose level - and WHY.Which allows you to understand and develop your own meal plan if you don't have access to a nutritionist. If you do, you'll better understand why your nutritionist makes the recommendations she does, and you will have the knowledge to discuss various options with her.

This may not be the first thing you want to read if you've just discovered you need to live in a way that manages your blood glucose levels. There are higher level overview books; educational websites run by the Joslin Center or American Diabetes Association; or better yet, diabetes management programs taught by diabetes educators and nutritionists at most local hospital that will give you a solid foundation.Ask your doctor about local programs if he hasn't recommended it to you already.

With that knowledge under your belt, this is an excellent book to take you down to the next level of detail.

A great book!! It's core message: IF YOU TAKE CARE OF THESE FIVE CRITICAL ISSUES, THERE IS NO REASON YOU CANNOT LIVE A LONG, HEALTY AND HAPPY LIFE. It is not Diabetes that leads to complications and a short life, but the mismanagement of these five critical numbers. Spells out EVERYTHING you need to know about these five issues.Everything is super clear and well laid out.Gives great game plans for management, taking control of your own condition and issues, how to make the most of doctor visits.Debunks common myths about Diabetes and unveils little known truths.

This Book is wonderful especially for the newly diagnosed Diabetic, it is very informative and helpful.I learned a great deal. I would suggest this book to be a part of required reading for all diabetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read this book
I wish I could put a copy of Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master to Enjoy a Long and Healthy Life in every diabetes clinic. Better yet, in the hands of every person with type 2 diabetes.

Richard Jackson, MD and Amy Tenderich provide a realistic guide to diabetes, particularly type 2 diabetes, with this book. The focus is on the results of the five tests that determine diabetes health (A1C, blood pressure, lipids, microalbumin, and eye exam) and the importance of physical activity rather than providing another lecture about weight loss and forbidden foods. Countering fears about insulin is another important aspect of this book. If someone needs insulin to keep good results coming on the five key tests, they should not fear it - they should embrace it as a way to curb future complications.

I might not be able to provide a copy to every person with type 2 diabetes...or even every diabetes clinic, but I can lend my copy to those interested in learning more about their own or their loved one's condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars 'Almost' All You Need To Know About Diabetes
Lose 30 pounds. Get your blood pressure down. Lower your LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and get that HDL cholesterol up. Keep an eye on your blood sugar and have it checked often.

Does any of this sound familiar? Sure it does and you may have even heard it from your own doctor regarding your flailing health because of you are overweight or obese. It's the dreaded lecture that comes from physicians when they see certain health indicators come back as irregular.

But what if what you are dealing with is something even more life-threatening than just a bout with obesity, hypertension, or a poor lipid profile? What if it's one of the most dreaded of all diseases that makes you feel like your world has come to an official end? That's exactly what happens to some people when they are told they have been diagnosed with diabetes.

What did I do to cause this? How can something like this happen to me? Will I ever live a "normal" life again or am I destined for a life of painful insulin injections, expensive prescription medications, and endless doctor visits for the rest of my life?

These thoughts are not only very real to people who are told they have diabetes, but it can paralyze them even when they otherwise have their life under complete control. Diabetes has quite literally turned the life of millions of people upside down and leaves them with very little hope or help. Where can people turn when they are faced with such despair about this complex disease they have?

Whether you are Type 1 or Type 2 diabetic, then you have undoubtedly been given some all-too-familiar generic advice about handling your diabetes (like I illustrated at the beginning of this review) which is all meant to help you I am sure. Unfortunately, though, this kind of one-size-fits-all approach to diabetes is not only shortsighted, but incredibly ineffective.

That's where the mostly informative new book from Harvard medical professor and Joslin Diabetes Center investigator Dr. Richard Jackson as well as saucy and always on point professional journalist, blogger, and diabetes sufferer Amy Tenderich comes into play. It's called Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes: 5 Essential Health Factors You Can Master To Enjoy A Long And Healthy Life (Marlowe Diabetes Library) and will quickly become your handy reference resource guide for almost everything you ever wanted to know about diabetes.

I say "almost" for a reason which I will explain in a moment.

First, the good parts of this book. It is very well put together in an enjoyable format mixing a healthy dose of diabetes facts alongside some hands-on practical advice about how to best implement the proper lifestyle changes that need to take place for optimal diabetes management. While this can be a rather drab and boring topic to discuss, Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do a yeoman's job of keeping it fun and engaging.

And I really like the fact that the authors strongly urge people living with diabetes to implement permanent lifestyle changes. At the same time, they push the positive message that diabetics don't necessarily need to attempt to make multiple changes all at once, but instead slowly begin to work them into their individual routine incrementally. I agree with this bit-by-bit strategy because it is the best way to make the changes take hold and become a permanent habit whether it is with weight loss, diabetes, or anything else. Breaking out of those old habits takes time.

Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes hits the ground running right away in the first six chapters explaining why you need to be concerned about your health when you have diabetes and points to the five tests that every single diabetic absolutely must have checked regularly if they are going to lick this disease by learning to manage it well.

What are these five tests? Very simply put, it's the following:

    1. Your A1C
    2. Your blood pressure
    3. Your lipid profile (cholesterol)
    4. Your microalbumin (What?! Don't worry, they explain!)
    5. Your eye exam

While Dr. Jackson and Tenderich do not explicitly recommend people who are not diabetic to have these tests conducted, I think it is an extremely good idea considering there are tens of millions more pre-diabetics walking around and have no idea they are either already or becoming insulin resistant. Taking preventative action now would likely slow down the expected diabetes boom coming over the next few decades.

You can certainly appreciate the "been there, done that" feel of this book which does a fabulous job of removing the mystery and awe out of diabetes for good. Whether you have just been diagnosed with diabetes or even if you are a decades-long veteran living with the disease, there is plenty of useful statistics and data to keep you occupied for hours as you learn all the ins and outs of diabetes.

But I have one pretty major concern about the book that makes me say it is "almost" a comprehensive look at the subject of diabetes. While there is plenty of discussion about carbohydrates and how controlling your intake of them whether they are in the form of sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, or otherwise in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes, the lack of a real sense of urgency about trying to keep them limited as a means for managing diabetes is not emphasized heavily enough and given the significance it deserves. All the latest research indicates that reducing carb intake can bring about permanent control of diabetes and you just don't hear this message stated explicitly in this book.

For a book like this about diabetes releasing in the year 2007, how can you totally ignore the many years of clinical studies (like this one) that have been conducted by valient researchers like Dr. Eric Westman from Duke University and Dr. Mary C. Vernon from the University of Kansas and the co-author of Atkins Diabetes Revolution? What about Dr. Steve Phinney or Dr. Jay Wortman? And let's not forget Dr. Mary Gannon and Dr. Frank Nuttall, too! I could easily continue on with many more names, but these are enough to get you started.

Not only have these amazing researchers shown the vital statistics for their diabetic patients become normalized, but many of them were able to come completely off of all their prescription medicines for good. GASP! How can this be? You'd never know this was possible if you only read this book because there was no mention of ending diabetes drug use in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes--NONE! Just the strong "now take your medicines regularly along with a low-fat diet" message that diabetics have had to suffer through long enough.

Where was the promotion of this major "cure" for diabetes which was highlighted nationally by Adam Campbell in Men's Health magazine in November 2006 found within the pages of this diabetes book, hmmm? The glaring absence of this cutting edge information about diabetes is like talking to someone about how to drive a car that doesn't have a steering wheel. Sure, you may get somewhere, but not necessarily where you want to go.

Furthermore, there was nary a single mention of the most famous diabetes expert who has implored a low-carb solution to his Type 1 diabetes for decades--the amazing Dr. Richard Bernstein! This man has done more to add quality of life and even saved the lives of millions of diabetics through his bestselling books and personal practice. However, if you read Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes it's as if Dr. Bernstein and his common sense strategies for tackling diabetes don't even exist. Shame on them for this grave omission!

To be honest, it was quite scary reading over and over again in this supposedly all-encompassing book on the topic of diabetes that people with this disease need to consume as much as 60 percent carbohydrates daily, including regular servings of sugar if they want it "in moderation!" Say what?! ARGH!

Are they trying to make these people get sicker and sicker?! What kind of irresponsible advice like this is being given to diabetics?! Yikeseroo! How about just giving them a little arsenic "in moderation" while you're at it, too? Sheeez!

Yet, at the same time, the authors emphasize the critical nature of carbohydrate reduction in the management of diabetes. So which is it? I understand we are all different with a variety of factors that will work for the individual person, but come on! I'm a big believer in people finding what works for them in weight loss and health management at my blog, but I see no downside for diabetics who want to control their disease naturally through diet by livin` la vida low-carb.

What will happen if diabetics decide to take the low-carb pathway to reversing the effects of their disease is they will get better than they've ever been before, seeing their A1C drop into "normal" range and staying there, lower their blood pressure, significantly drop their triglycerides, raise their HDL cholesterol levels, and ward off many of the inevitable future health issues due to their diabetes. Not a bad deal if you ask me!

Of course, the lack of any information about the low-carb nutritional approach to combat diabetes in Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes may have more to do with the American Diabetes Association and their ill-advised recommendations than anything else. It is quite clear that Dr. Jackson and Tenderich relied heavily on their skewed advice for diabetics.

You see the unmistakable fingerprints of their needless warnings about lowering LDL cholesterol (with even MORE medications such as statins--EEEK!), avoiding saturated fat, lowering salt intake, and controlling fat, calories, and portion sizes in page after page of this book. It really was more than a little nauseating to read all of this information while "low-carb" was nowhere to be found. I can't tell you how incredibly disappointing this was to me because diabetics who read this book will be left in the dark about what very well could be the solution to their disease.

While I certainly can appreciate what Dr. Richard Jackson and Amy Tenderich have done with their book Know Your Numbers, Outlive Your Diabetes to help educate people with this disease get the basic information they may be looking for, it is the blatant omission of critical information about low-carb as a viable treatment option for diabetes that has me gravely concerned.

And if you are diabetic, you deserve to be armed with all the facts so you really can "outlive your diabetes." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Information!
I picked up this book per the recommendation of a nurse who works for the wellness division of my health insurance company. She was quite correct in this book tells you everything you need know about the causes and treatment of Diabetes. After reading the book, I had a much better understanding of what was happening in my body and my stress level went down considerably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to read and informative
I found, having prediabetes myself, the book to be very informative. After being diagnosed with prediabetes I was told to no longer eat sugar. No information was given to me about diabetes and how to avoid getting it. This book explained all of that to me. When you have prediabetes you have the opportunity to reverse it if you acquire the right information and follow it. Had I not found this book I would probably have diabetes today. This book teaches you how to choose the proper treatments, how to check your sugar levels and when, what tests are needed to aid you in your journey, what complications can arise due to low and high sugar levels and how to notice them and treat them, what food to eat, how much exercise you need, and just about everything in between. Whether your looking for information to aid you in helping your diabetes or to prevent you from becoming a diabetic this book is for you! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 50 Secrets of the Longest Living People with Diabetes
I was interested in reading this book because I have had diabetes for 47 years and because I have a very good friend who was one of the 50 interviewed for the book.It was interesting reading and I would recommend it to diabetics for some insightful
    education.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for diabetics
This is a really informative book for diabetics. It is so nice to know so many others are dealing with this disease. To read of their struggles over so many years of their lives and surviving and thriving is encouraging. There are many practical tips, also.Well worth the time and money to read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Might be good for new diabetics
I might recommend this book for someone newly diagnosed but it doesn't have anything new or insightful for anyone who has done any reading about the subject before. It tends to be repetitive which makes for a difficult read. If you read the first page and first 2 or 3 quotes at the beginning of each chapter you pretty much have read the entire chapter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, It's just not that good
I'm not a negative reviewer as a general rule. I order a book because I expect to like it and I did like this book, but I didn't love it. Printed on newsprint the quality seemed cheap as a book and rather thin on content.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must -read for anyone with diabetes...
This is one of the best books about diabetes and people living with diabetes that I have read in a very long time.As a person living with the disease for over 40 years, it was such an inspiration to read about other people that have lived with it even longer than I and to read about others who are dealing with the same issues that I deal with all the time.It is so important for people to know that diabetes does not have to be a death sentence...it is a manageable disease and the proof of that is in reading this book.

I suppose I shouldn't brag too much since I'm quoted quite a bit in this book, but it is truly a book for anyone with diabetes. It is filled with amazing suggestions, (yes, even I learned some new things!) and it should encourage all who take the time to really absorb the contents.

Dr. Sheri and Dr. Steve are both wonderful people and certainly experienced in their field as they, too live with diabetes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost weight and inches
I tried this diet while my teenage daughter was gone for five weeks so I wouldn't be tempted to eat outside of the plan. Loved the recipies and meals, it was easy to follow and I visibly lost stomach fat and weight. I did break it up into about five meals a day by saving part of my lunch for afternoon snack. I think it worked because I was allowed to have fats I enjoy, like avacado. I recommend it with one caution: dietes are subjective and don't work if you aren't ready, and they won't work if the diet is impossible for you to follow. I learned that the hard way.:)

1-0 out of 5 stars Food was great but never lost a thing.Gained 2.5 lbs in 7 days so quit the program.Thanks.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time
I did not find this book informative. It basically dealt with folks who, while their sugar was high, were experimenting with what to eat and how it effected their sugar. These people were not on medication.

5-0 out of 5 stars Voice Of Reason And Hope
Whether you've just been told you have diabetes or have lived with it for years, there is something for you here. The writing style is easy to understand, and the ideas are reasonable and practical. There is a lot of good information here, and it is presented in a style that felt like I was connecting with a person, a friendly dietician who understood my confusion and frustration. The author recognizes the fact that people will need time to make changes and helps diabetics find a food plan that they can use with the whole family without agonized screams about serving cottage cheese and carrot sticks for dinner. :) I've bought other books that are either too academic or have meal suggestions that I'd never use. After using some of the ideas in this book, I was able to get my glucose levels into the normal range without too much trouble or eating food I don't like. I also lost 15 pounds to boot without really trying. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for the newly diagnosed
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes nearly 10 years ago. And I found this book very useful and practical. Medical understanding of diabetes is always changing, and this book is a good update for me on the nutritional end. It's even helped me win a couple of arguments with a nurse who is "close" to me, but hasn't studied diabetes since nursing school! Excellent value, and I've recommended it to the nutritionist with whom I work.

5-0 out of 5 stars No gloom and doom here!
As a recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetic, I am looking for lots of information on how to manage the disease in a healthy, positive manner. This book has really helped me.Author Leontos clearly explains the challenges in store but emphasizes positive ways to react.I particularly like her information on modifying recipes. This book is a real bargain for all the help you get!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Plan for Diabetics and Overweights
This small book serves the average person whether diabetic or one whoneeds to shed pounds. It is very easy to read with many suggestions tomodify recipes.Sometimes humorous, always practical and down to earth,it's helpful to all readers. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book has become indispensible to me
I/ve used this book for about six years on a constant basis. In fact my first copy became so ragged I purchased another. The recipes are delicious and most have become a staple in our home.I've had many other books about dibetes 2, but found this book was the one I refer to the most - not only for the wonderful recipes but Ms Hiser explains the subject so well and thoroughly. I'm living a heathier life and this book has been my main guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars How about something written in this decade
I had intended to purchase book, until I read a couple of pages in the preview. The author states on page 1 and continues on page 2, "predict by the the year 2000 etc, etc." That was 10 years ago. I want something more current for my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Diabetes;Living and Eating with Type 2 Diabetes
We found this book to be extremely helpful.Full of great recipes and valuable information. This copy was bought for a friend who was just told he had type 2.Would highly recommended this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Diabetes:Living and Eating Well with Type 2 Diabetes
This is one of the most practical and informative books I've found. It is easy to understand and has useful menus and recipes for the busy life of most people with diabetes or pre diabetes. I do not believe you will be disappointed with this book. Give it a read, you'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, even for the non-diabetic
My father has type II diabetes.I bought this book for him, but ended up reading it myself.I am not diabetic, but am at risk of developing it.This book is an interesting read, and has a wondeful meal plan and recipes.I have decided to start eating the way she describes, The Mediterranean way, just because it's a healthy way to live. It's just a bonus for me that it also helps prevent and control "the other diabetes".Get this book....it's fantastic! ...
