1-0 out of 5 stars The diabetes Carbohydrate & Calorie counter
I did not like this book as it has too much out of home listings, and not enough on just plain food you cook at home.
I do not go out to eat much and perfer a book with simple listing of food to cook at home.

4-0 out of 5 stars very useful
Very helpful in detailing carbohydrates and calories which is a plus since I am trying to watch my weight and my mother is a diabetic.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the book you'd want.....
After some positive reviews, I ordered this book and I'm totally disappointed. I already knew the GI information from Internet: this book is just a compilation of same GI (glycemic index) tables, only printed version.
I wouldn't buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Carbohydrate and Calorie Counter
I was told by my doctor that I am pre-diabetic and advised to try to lower my blood sugar by diet alone. All I knew, or thought I knew, was that I should give up sugar.Speaking with a nutritionist taught me that dealing with carbohydrates was the key and I needed help. The Diabetes Carbohydrate & Calorie Counter begins with a discussion of diabetes itself, how to count carbs, plan meals, deal with eating out, specific chapters on sugar, fiber, and the glycemic index, and references to internet sites where it is possible to learn more. How to use a carbohydrate counter is discussed and finally a lengthy list not only of just about every individual food but brand name items as well. This is a comprehensive wealth of information that I find extremely helpful to have on hand. With it, I have managed to lower my blood sugar from a high of 120 to 90 and I am very pleased.I no longer feel lost at sea in dealing with my diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars gestational diabetes book
paperback, ok price, good subject material, educational, good service & delivery to a health clinic for client use

2-0 out of 5 stars Probably the worst book I've read on the subject, but you should read it anyway
This book does explain alot about the history of how the medical establishment came up with gestational diabetes but it really doesn't help much for women that have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes."Discuss with your doctor" is not helpful.I would have preferred a more helpful book than this from the source.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too simplistic
This book was written for those without a high school education. It did not contain any relevant information that you couldn't get from a basic pamplet, and included some condescending sections on stopping hard drugabuse and contraception. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Prevent and Treat Diabetes with Natural Medicine
This is not the same book that was advertised, little if anything is mentioned about using natural medicines.
the titles are of the books are similar, the copy I received is "How to Prevent, treat and self-manage Diabetes and related complications (2nd edition), by M. K. Ansari.

I don't know if they are one and the same book, if so I am very disappointed, would not recomend this book for those looking for natural options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learned more about the human body than just diabetes
Excellent book.It tells about the causes of biabetes, not just the symptoms. All medications only treat the symptoms, this book treats the cause so that you are not on meds for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars What to do when your Dr just gives you more drugs
I first found this book in my local library, after my Dr sent me to a specialist, and HE just started giving me more drugs for my diabetes. He also said he didn't know of any literature on the subject of diabetes, other than the grade-school-simple brochures that pharma puts out.

This book is a roadmap of how to strengthen your body and reduce the influence of diabetes, ALL WITHOUT PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.It is based on medical studies, biochemistry, not wishful thinking.I have not felt this good in years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifestyle changer
This book has changed my life. I am now acutely aware of what and how I am eating and how I am conducting my life to stay healthy and avoid escalating my pre-diabetic condition to type II diabetes. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make a change to a healthy lifestyle regardless of whether diabetes is a problem or not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice for the Kindle...
Unfortunately, this book doesn't have an active table of contents for the Kindle edition, so it's next to useless for that purpose. My husband was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes, and among the four books on diabetes and carbs etc. I've downloaded for our Kindles, this is the only one that wasn't easily searchable. I've already received my refund from Amazon. Too bad.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guide to Carbs
I wanted a book for counting carbs in my diet. This book did much more than that. I was pleasantly susrprised to learn that carbs were not as bad and that I was being led to believe would cause a weight loss if I stayed off them. They are good for you in many ways that I hadn't known about. It was a much better read than I had planned on and healthier eating ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Thorough and Informative
As a new diabetic, this book was a lifesaver. It even has carb counts for a variety of chain restaurants.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food Bible
this book was a gift to a very dear friend of mine. They now have Diabetes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This is a very helpful book even for the ones that do not suffer from diabetes.
I highly recommend.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bible??The book is less then a inch thick!
Maybe its the beginners bible and not the holy bible size they were talking about. This book is for beginners only!!The main part of this book is recipes. If I wanted that I would have bought a recipe book not a book to teach me about diabetes nutrition. This is not a complete anything!!!Try Prevention The Sugar Solution.I am returning the "bible".What a waste of my money having to return this book. Not sure why it has so many stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Food and Nutrition Bibld
This is a very informative book, with lots of tips.I've tried some of the recipes and they are good.I also purchased the book for a family member and they also found a lot of useful information in the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Deliver What It Promises
I would not recommend this book for people who are trying to get their life together after a diagnosis of diabetes. I bought this book because its subtitle is "A Complete Guide to Planning, Shopping, Cooking, and Eating". It is none of those things.
I was particularly interested in the SHOPPING promise because I find that to be the most difficult part of managing my diet. Other books didn't have anything helpful, and despite its promise, this book doesn't either. One has to read through every single recipe, write down the ingredients of what you want to make, and then go out and get it. Just like every other book. So tell me: how does this help with "shopping"? I expected lists of basic staples in a diabetic's diet. There should be lists of "must-haves" for your pantry. This book lies about what it contains, and is sadly lacking in what it needs.
An expensive mistake, don't buy it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DTour Diet COOKBOOK
This is an excellent companion piece to the DTOUR DIET.
Once you've gone through the recipes in the DIET book and are comfortable with the mix-n-match approach, this cookbook gets you many more recipes that are tasty and easy to prepare.

3-0 out of 5 stars a little disappointed
the book was new as stated, but I was a little disappointed in the contents. It is an unrealistic diet for my husband. It does contain a lot of useful information about diabeties for someone new at this medical problem.

2-0 out of 5 stars Recipes with too many and not-on-hand ingredients
I didn't find the recipe portion of this book to be beneficial since most of these recipes call for items that I don't usually stock in my pantry or refrigerator. It would be okay if the same ingredients were used in several of the recipes, then I wouldn't mind purchasing these food items since I would be using them up in other recipes. That's not the case, you have to purchase items that you normally would not have on hand in your kitchen and then it would take a long to finish them.I have other recipe books for people with diabetes that are MUCH better than this one.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK
I HAVE NOT USED THIS BOOK LONG ENOUGH TO GIVE A PROPER REVIEW.RECIPIES SEEM GOOD. THE CARB.COUNTS ARE TOO HIGH FOR ME.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes DTOUR Diet Cookbook
The Diabetes DTOUR Diet Cookbook is broken down into three parts.Part one is an introduction to the DTOUR diet.Part two is the recipe section.Part three is full of additional resources like sample menus and eating out suggestions.

The recipes are broken down into Appetizers, Breakfasts, Soups & Sandwiches, Salads & Sides, Meats & Poultry, Seafood, Vegetarian, and Sweets & Treats. Each chapter contains a number of beautiful, full color photographs of some of the recipes included. Each recipe is written on one page with no carry over to the next page which makes it very easy to follow and to cook from.

The recipes are very well thought out and include an ingredients list and easy to follow, numbered directions.Recipes also include nutrition information including calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, sat fat, cholesterol, sodium, fiber, calcium & omega-3's.There are also notations included throughout to let the reader know which recipes are quick to make.

I was extremely happy to find out that the cookbook doesn't use artificial sweeteners in its recipes. The recipes use traditional sweeteners like honey, granulated sugar and confectioners sugar. The recipes do generally recommend using ingredients that are low fat and low sodium which makes sense in a diet cookbook.

A number of the recipes have sections with suggestions on how the recipe can be made ahead or stored for future use. This is a great help for busy cooks who don't have a lot of time in the kitchen. I also enjoyed the notations that let me know how I could use up any leftovers from the meal or what else I should serve with it for side dishes.

I loved the variety of different types of recipes.I found old family favorites like New England Clam Chowder along with exotic sounding dishes like Sesame Ginger Tuna Kabobs. There are man pleasing recipes like Slow Cooker Beef Pot Roast with Root Vegetables and kid pleasing recipes like Ranch Chicken Fingers. Not to mention all the yummy desserts in there to please ME like the Milk Chocolate Panna Cotta! Oh boy now that sounds good!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great starter book for those trying to lower sugar intake!
I had checked this book out from my local library but liked so many of the recipes that I decided to buy it.I have tried the Turkey Sloppy Joes & the Chicken Spaghetti, and when I go off my vegan detox diet (after I return from my overseas vacation), I plan to make one of the crab dishes as well as the Sweet Potato Pound Cake, Key Lime Pie (yes, I do have a sweet tooth), and some other poultry dishes (I don't do pork at all and very rarely eat beef, seafood, or game meats).I was very pleased with the recipes I've tried already - though they do take a great deal of preparation - as they were flavorful, filling, and relatively easy to make.I recommend this cookbook for anyone with diabetes who grew up on Soul Food and feel that they might be missing out when given their diagnosis. My mother was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes several years ago, and I'm trying to get her to re-learn how to cook Soul Food faves, as well as re-train her taste buds to accept new dishes - like the recipes in this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I recently purchased this book and have tried a number of recipes in it. I realize lots of people have different palates. After the first few, I figured perhaps it was just me, but after a number of them, now I'm disappointed.
I expected tastier food than is prepared if I follow the recipes the way they're written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Delicious Recipes!!
I have tried several recipes from this book and was pleasantly surprised that the dishes were delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down Home Food With Less Fat/Sugar
"Authors Gaines and Weaver show the reader how much of the hypertension, heart disease, and diabetes plaguing the African-American population can be avoided by making easy changes to traditional soul food recipes without losing too much of the flavor. The basics of healthy food preparation and menu planning are incorporated with suggestions for cooking with traditional herbs and spices, along with advice for reducing fat, calories and sodium. Portion sizes are given to aid in blood sugar control and weight loss, as well as complete nutritional information and official ADA exchanges.
Now you can experience palate-pleasing soul food recipes such as Barbecue Pulled Pork, Hoppin' John, Hoe Cake, Soul Slaw, Collards with Smoked Turkey, Chicken and Dumplings, Key Lime Pie, Rice Pudding, Sweet Potato Pound Cake and more in The New Soul Food Cookbook."(review from the National Federation of the Blind website, Marilyn Helton reviewer) ...
