5-0 out of 5 stars Superb book
Though there are sections about cataract surgery, this excellent book will probably appeal to a pretty limited group of Eye M.D.s due to the subspecialization. It is aimed at people performing anterior segment surgery, but who do corneal and refractive surgery as well.Useful tips include gluing corneal ulcers and perfs, PTK, and PRK and LASIK.There are also tips for full-thickness grafts.Very useful and highly recommended.I hope the authors come out with a new edition in the future. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Work for Ophthalmologists
I study Medicine at Bologna (Italy) and I have a passion for Ophthalmology. I think that Albert & Jakobiec's Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology is a very fine work. This textbook has the correct range of structure and topics, although some of them are in need of integration, i.e. Surgery, Ophthalmic Pathology, Optics (involved exposition), Lens and Strabismus.
Every chapter is similar to a Scientific American article, but just not easy to read and sufficiently comprehensible. Therefore, the book is not appropriate for use by medical students and residents; yet the six volumes cooperate to make clear the physiopathology of many ocular diseases, chiefly because the Authors are very authoritative and experienced. There are few pictures, so I think it is necessary to buy a valid atlas (Spalton) to compensate for such lack. The strengths of the current edition are: Retina, Uvea, Eyelids, The Glaucomas, Conjunctiva and Cornea.
In my opinion "Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology" is a great work for Ophthalmologists who want to widen their knowledge. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Sloppy
As has been suggested, this is the ophthalmology textbook by which all others are judged. If you're set up on a high pedestal, then you are judged by high standards.

There is undoubtedly a huge amount of information, and yet the 4 volumes are not comprehensive (much as was/is the problem with Duane's, the other major player). In addition, some chapters are clearly written by the experts in the field while others read as if they have been written by their fellows, who clearly lack the perspective and nuance that is required in a book of this stature.

This textbook is sooooooooo frustrating. It is the organization that is the problem. It appears to have been something of a rush job, as there are all sorts of typos and wrong running titles on chapters, and wrong titles for photos. It follows the now-standard kiddie-friendly format of cartoon color coding for chapters, but has the volume subject(s) in barely discernible letters on the spine (one of which is actually wrong!). The contents page is then a confusing mishmash of color covering all 4 volumes with hard-to-find breaks between, while the index in each volume relates only to that volume! Exactly the wrong way round. The index should give every reference to the subject throughout all 4 volumes, while the contents should relate only to that volume. I have so far had about a 50% hit rate in being able to find the subjects I have been chasing, either 'cos they're not covered or the index simply doesn't show them. The online access, on the other hand, is first-rate, with hyperlinks to the appropriate articles included.

Could we please have a proper book for adults without the silly colours, and an index that is complete?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive textbook
This book is very expensive to buy on a resident budget but I'm saving up money to get myself a copy. I have been using it as reference in the library. I really love this textbook for several reasons. All the chapters are very well organized into different units in a logical way. Every chapter is written by an expert in that particular area and unlike other ophthalmology textbooks I've seen, it doesn't just focus on the eye. There are many great chapters with in depth discussions of various topics like immunology, ID, biochemistry, and other areas of science and medicine. As a result, if I'm looking to read up on a particular basic science or peripherally-related topic, I don't need to go open up 15 different textbook then try to put everything together myself--I can find almost everything I need in this book. Also, while textbooks become outdated very fast and it is important to keep up with current literature, sometimes you need a good source of information/reference that you can trust that integrates the facts for you. In my opinion, this book is very much like Osler's "Principles and Practice of Medicine" for Internal medicine....If you own a copy, you know what I mean...it's well thought out, logical, and classic. It's the best ophthalmology reference book I've seen and well worth the price. I'm going to buy it as soon as I can. ... Read more
