Abstract:
Biased attention for threatening stimuli has been associated with many forms of psychopathology. Attention to threatening faces presented below perceptual thresholds was assessed in patients diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder using a pictorial emotional Stroop task. Patients were tested in two different identity states, in one of which they claimed strong awareness of trauma. Attentional bias for social threat proved state-dependent in the patients and deviated from the patterns observed in controls. ... Read more

Description:
Dissociation comprises a range of psychological processes, which have largely been the subject of psychodynamic discussion. Dissociative phenomena are for the most part unaddressed by cognitive theorists. Current measures are atheoretical and our understanding of dissociation has been hampered by the absence of clear psychological models. This paper describes a new cognitive model of dissociation and the development and validation of a theoretically based measure-the Wessex Dissociation Scale (WDS). The WDS has adequate internal consistency, shows convergent validity with the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES-II), and is equivalent to the DES-II in its associations with severe psychopathology. However, the WDS has some advantages over the DES-II, in that it is sensitive to milder manifestations of dissociation, demonstrating links to less severe pathologies. The findings described here provide preliminary support for the usefulness of the cognitive model, and the varied consequences of dissociative processes. The clinical and research utility of the model and the scale are discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
In this thought-provoking account, McHugh explains why trendy diagnoses and misguided treatments have repeatedly taken over psychotherapy. He recounts his participation in court battles that erupted over diagnoses of recovered memories and the frequent companion diagnoses of multiple-personality disorders. He also warns that diagnoses of post-traumatic stress disorder today may be perpetuating a similar misdirection, thus exacerbating the patients’ suffering. He argues that both the public and psychiatric professionals must raise their standards for psychotherapy, in order to ensure that the incorrect designation of memory as the root cause of disorders does not occur again. Psychotherapy, McHugh ultimately shows, is a valuable healing method—and at the very least an important adjunct treatment—to the numerous psychopharmaceuticals that flood the drug market today.
An urgent call to arms for patients and therapists alike, Try to Remember delineates the difference between good and bad psychiatry and challenges us to reconsider psychotherapy as the most effective way to heal troubled minds.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Good Laugh If Not For My Tears
McHugh's disregard for an actual disorder is heinous. Did anyone notice he only focused on the far distant past for most of the book? Did anyone notice in most of his references to the the disorder he referred to it as MPD and not DID which has been the actual diagnosis name for many years now. Did anyone notice the only cases he referred to consisted of cases where the supposed perpetrators were going to be taken to court? There are far more abuse victims with or without DID who would never consider confronting their perpetrators, let alone taking them to court. Why should we, who have been abused and taught to keep secret all that was done and who did it, ever believe anyone would believe us? Why would we ever believe the perpetrator would admit their guilt, whether male or female? And, yes there are male AND female perpetrators. DID is all about hiding what happened. It's about hiding it from yourself and it's about hiding it from the world. The majority of those with DID do not openly present it out in the world. And if I were going to make up a life for the period I couldn't remember, wouldn't I make up something happy?

For me, I had returning memories before I ever went to any type of mental health provider. I hadn't talked to anyone about the memories. I ended up suicidal, not sleeping and not eating, trying to push the memories back down and being suicidal is why I ended up in therapy. I had to be drug there by a caring friend. With the three therapists I've had in the last 15 years not one has hypnotized me. Not one has told me "Try To Remember"! Not one has suggested that anything has happened. It did happen and I fight remembering it every hour of every day because I wish it hadn't happened.

I'm DID and I fight the diagnosis because I'd rather be crazy than have remembered what happened and have what happened be the cause of the DID. DID is a brilliant coping mechanism. It is not fun and there is no "payoff" for pretending to be DID. If it is not used or needed by the time a child is around 10, different coping skills have been formed and it will not be used. It cannot first start being used when an adult. Even though the others may not present themselves in a way they can be noticed until adulthood, they have been there since childhood. After all, it's about keeping the secrets as we were taught. Most who have developed DID are extremely intelligent, creative and highly dissociative.

McHugh's failure to accept the truth does not change our truth or the truth of the multitude of other children who have been abused. This includes those who utilized extreme levels of dissociation forming DID in order to present a "normal" child to the world and those who, like my sister, did not have the ability to utilize DID, went over the edge and tried to commit suicide.

I find it curious for McHugh to be so entrenched with the FMS Foundation. But then maybe it's because there is no such diagnosis in the DSM as false memory syndrome. The title was made up by the group. I'm sure there are most likely those who were led falsely by therapists to believe they were abused. There are good and bad in all occupations as there are in all types of people. I would put McHugh in the inept or uneducated category after reading his book, but that is only my opinion. His book contains his own opinions and to me that makes it a work of fiction and he's entitled to his own make believe story. I only wish it weren't being so hurtful to those who have been hurt enough already. Why do so many people bury their head in the sand and not believe the horrors others can commit against children?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Devastating and Courageous Book
Dr. McHugh writes in a relentlessly calm and clinical style about the Recovered Memory fiasco in psychiatry. Many young women, under the influence of heavy sedatives and hypnosis, and intense, often daily, psychiatric counseling sessions, eventually "remembered" being sexually abused by their father, day care operator etc.Dr. McHugh courageously helps destroy these quack practitioners - and the pop psychology judges who encouraged these trendy diagnoses and ruined many lives - and he calls into question self-serving "expertise" that dominates our culture today.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great book about the tragedies caused recovered memory therapy from a reknowned scientist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Book
The average person, reading "Try to Remember", would probably not have a clue as to why this book brings such a profound sense of relief to those who have suffered from the decades-long misadventures of "repressed memory" therapists.Using unscientific theories and backed by a society trying to help children from abusing parents, too many psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers were caught up in a self-righteous, but uncritical, labeling of innocent people as incestuous "perps".The accusers -- those who had gone to professionals for help with their problems -- were betrayed by the methods used, and their families were often devastated. The huge numbers of family members involved are usually grossly underestimated, since for the accused to speak up (against general societal sympathy for the "victim") could mean leaving question marks in the minds of their friends and acquaintances -- "where there's smoke, there's fire!".
McHugh, a well-respected leader in the field of psychiatry, cuts through this web of passionate, but unscientific, theory and practice in a very lucid and readable book.He shows how it fits within a larger framework of the two main theoretical "camps" among psychiatric professionals, including the compromise between them in agreeing on superficial symptomatology, rather than underlying etiology, as the basis for the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual). This is no minor matter, since the DSM, the official classification of mental/behavioral disorders, is the basis for the treatment prescriptions arising from these diagnoses, as well as payment for the professionals.
On top of all this, he gives a clear recommendation about how to go about choosing a therapist. It is a superb book, tying together how the main streams of psychiatric thought produced an unscientific DSM, how the "repressed memory" craze arose from one of those streams, and how to find a more realistic therapist in a sometimes nebulous field.

5-0 out of 5 stars demolishes the dangerous psuedo-science that has motivated modern psychotherapy
An absolute masterpiece. McHugh demolishes the dangerous psuedo-science that has motivated modern psychotherapy, specifically the Freudian nonsense that spawned the "repressed memory movement" over the past two decades. Hopefully McHugh's important book will help us close this dark chapter in the history of modern psychiatry. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. ... Read more

The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson and first published in 1886. It is about a London lawyer who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr Henry Jekyll, and the misanthropic Edward Hyde. The work is known for its vivid portrayal of the psychopathology of a split personality; in mainstream culture the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" has come to mean a person who may show a distinctly different character, or profoundly different behaviour, from one situation to the next, as if almost another person, possibly because of the rare disorder "multiple personality disorder" (more recently renamed "Dissociative Identity Disorder").

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was an immediate success and one of Stevenson's best-selling works. Stage adaptations began in Boston and London within a year of its publication and it has gone on to inspire scores of major film and stage performances.

Product Description
You peer into the mirror and have trouble recognizing yourself.
You can't remember if you actually did something or only thought you did.
You feel as if you're going through the motions of life.

These are all symptoms of dissociation--a fragmented state of consciousness involving feelings of disconnection and amnesia that affects 30 million individuals in North America alone. The surprising truth revealed in The Stranger in the Mirror, a groundbreaking book based on eighteen years of pioneering research, is that millions of people have dissociative symptoms that have gone undetected or untreated. This hidden epidemic has occurred simply because people have been unable to identify their problem, or were not asked the right questions about their symptoms. Since dissociation can be a person 's standard response to trauma, its symptoms are a common reaction to such life--threatening events as a car accident or such intense, lasting traumas as rape. There is a strong possibility that you or someone you know suffers from some dissociative condition. Because dissociative experiences are often illusive and hard to describe, they are rarely reported to therapists.

The Stranger in the Mirror offers the general public unique guidelines for identifying dissociative symptoms, as well as for treatment and recovery. It not only debunks many myths surrounding dissociation but also offers some startling revelations. For example, normal people experience dissociative symptoms in everyday life, and dissociation is as widespread as anxiety and depression and may explain such intriguing phenomena as past lives and near-death or out-of-body experiences.

Based on rigorous scientific testing, Dr. Marlene Steinberg has developed a breakthrough diagnostic tool for dissociation, one embraced by the mental health community as the "gold standard." The book's questionnaires, based on this test, will help you identify your own dissociative symptoms and will alert you to possible underlying dissociative causes of such pervasive conditions as anxiety, depression, manic-depression, attention-deficit hyper-activity disorder (ADRD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or even schizophrenia. If you have concerns about your own or a loved one's psychological health, this is a must-read book.

Filled with gripping and moving case histories of people with multiple personality or other dissociative conditions, The Stranger in the Mirror will take you behind the closed doors of the psychiatrist's office on a fascinating journey through the therapeutic process, providing enlightening insights into how all of us respond to trauma and overcome it. The innovative method of treatment described in this important book--the "Four C's," comfort, communication, cooperation, and connection--can benefit anyone in search of a healthier sense of self and a heightened capacity for joy.

5-0 out of 5 stars the stranger in the mirror
I read the first page of this book and thought "wow", ive passed it on to my c.p.n. who comming into contact with me is just learning about D.I.D. and me, i think this book will be very educational for anyone whos entering into the complex world we live in with D.I.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read--highly recommended!
What I particularly noticed when I read this book was the amount of compassion Dr. Steinberg appears to have for her patients and dissociative individuals in general. Dr. Steinberg is the creator of the SCID-D, known as the "gold standard" for testing for dissociative disorders. She also has a great deal of experience in treating dissociative patients. Clearly, she is well qualified to write this book. Personally, I found this remarkable blend of professional insight and human compassion to be a delightful breath of fresh air.

No single text, in and of itself, I feel, can make anyone into an "expert" on any subject. Period. However, if one has a desire to learn about and understand dissociative symptoms and disorders, this is an excellent resource whether one is a complete neophyte in regard to the subject of dissociation, or simply desiring to gain a richer understanding of what they already know about dissociative disorders.

In my honest and humble opinion, I find this to be an excellent read which I have already recommended to others I know in my personal life. In all likelihood, I will probably read this book again soon as I have certainly kept thinking about the information presented within its pages since I read it. This is truly a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pivotal Life Changing Book
To express the impact this book has had on my life goes beyond words. It absolutely turned my life upside down and started me on a journey toward wholeness and healing, after years of being misdiagnosed, and spinning my wheels. I recommend this book first and foremost to anyone with chronic mental illness. The quizzes at the end of the chapters are extremely helpful as a preliminary assessment of where one might lie on the dissociation continuum. This book should be required reading for everyone training in a mental health or medical field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self-care is for everyone.
Everyone dissociates. When you drive home on auto pilot and don't remember the trip, when you walk into a room and can't remember what you went in there for, when someone is in an accident and goes into an altered state where they keep functioning even though injured until they're safe again, getting help and can experience the pain.

This books describes the author's diagnostic tool for evaluating dissociative experiences. She has developed a matrix of five categories of dissociation and five levels of severity. She stresses that if the dissociation is causing problems for an individual, the condition responds well to appropriate treatment no matter what the severity.

One goal is to de-stigmatize persistent dissociative conditions and to remind all professionals that everyone should be treated with respect, no matter what behaviour they exhibit. No one's personality should be treated as a freak show.

Another gaol is to encourage everyone to take care of themselves, to nurture their inner environment for a healthier life and she provides some great ideas on how to do that.

I believe the author accomplishes these goals. This is a very readable, fascinating, helpful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for therapists and laypeople
This is probably my all-time favourite book on dissociation.Readers will find an easy to understand description of all of the different types of dissociation and a discussion of the extent to which we all range in levels of dissociation.

Written mostly in everyday language, it is an interesting read for professionals as well as clients or the public in general.

Particularly interesting are the excerpts of the SCID questionnaire so that you can try to get some idea of where on the dissociative continuum you may fall, and what particular types of dissociation you experience. ... Read more

Mmmmm, I liked this one but do not, will not use it as much in my work. It was like remedial reading for something I skimmed over when in school. The book was recommended for background with dissociative disorder work and I'm glad I took the time with it. I disagree with some of the interventions used because others seem to cause less distress with clients and I'm not so much into the hypnosis stuff. I kind of took it with a grain of salt for being a good piece from the time frame the authors were doing the research and the work. For current ego state work I highly recommend April Steel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Ego States by Watkins & Watkins
I am taking a graduate course on Advanced Thereupitics Techniques.Though this book was recommended I consider to be a MUST READ book.Much basic understanding came from chapter two. It helped me understand Freud's cathexis and how it connects the conscious and unconscious mind. Cathexis is an energy that binds thoughts together.

My metaphorical understanding is as follows: Tom (Conscious) and Dick (unconscious) are in a locked room looking at each other. The lights (cathexis) are turned off and Dick moves without sound to another location in the room.In Tom's mind's eye, he pictures Dick exactly where he was before the lights went out. However, the darkness (broken cathexis) has broken the visual bond so they are no longer visually in touch with each other even though they are still in the same room.

This is just one example of the insight that I gained from reading this book. This book is helping me understand and use NLP and hipnotherapy techniques with greater effectiveness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material - Must Read
This book was lent to me shortly after I was diagnosed with DID.With all the research I have completed there has not been a more realistic portrayal of the disorder. It was and is comforting to know that the chaos I thought would be never ending was real and controllable.I now have my own copies of the book and lend them out to others who are either seeking information on DID for research or self information. This book is truly a help during a rough time of struggle.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book I've read on DID.
This vividly detailed book takes you in the mind of a man disgnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder (formally known as Multiple Personality Disorder). Cameron "Cam" West now with his Ph.D. takes you on a journey with the discovery of his condition; not just HIS journey, but his wife's, son's and everyone else inside of him.
If you come into this the same way I did, (Sybil? what's this talk of Sybil?) you may start off with a bit of denial, feeling the author to be as imaginative and descriptive as J.K. Rowling was when she wrote her infamous Harry Potter novels.
Once you come to grips with the fact that this is not a wonderful art of fiction, denial turns to astonishment, sadness, and horror, when you learn about Cam's boxed up history.
You feel as if you're sitting right next to Rikki, crying along with her, able to see poor Davey talk about what he felt just happened to him. You sympathize with twelve year old Dusty, not happy about being a little girl trapped in a man's body. You laugh right out loud as you read just how funny Bart can be. And for all of the hate and anger Switch has stored up inside of him, you still forgive him and feel compassion for such a strong eight year old. Every single one of Cam's personalities touches your heart in some way, not just his alters, but everyone you encounter. They touch your heart and tug at the strings long after this amazing, page-turning book is closed.
