Product Description
Reading this book is an enlightening experience! Weaving a rich tapestry of multicultural myths, ancient legends, and simple folktales, Anita Johnston teaches women how to free themselves from disordered eating by discovering the metaphors that are hidden in their own life stories. "Storytellers speak in the language of myth and metaphor," Johnston explains. "They tell us a truth that is not literal, but symbolic. If we hear the stories with only the outer ear, they can seem absurd and untrue, but when listened to with the inner ear, they convey a truth that can be understood and absorbed on a deeply personal level. In this way, stories help us connect with our inner world, to the natural rhythms and cycles of the earth, and to the power of our intuitive wisdom."In addition to being immensely enjoyable reading, Eating in the Light of the Moon is filled with practical exercises and profound insights. Twenty chapters explore different themes of self-discovery and empowerment on core issues such as:

Intuition: The Inner Seeing, Hearing, Knowing

Symbolism: Hunger as a Metaphor

Feelings: Gifts from the Heart

Moontime: Reclaiming the Body's Wisdom

Dreamtime: The Journey Within

Sexuality: Embracing the Feminine

Recovery: Out of the Labyrinth ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
Never once on Amazon have I seen 48 out of 48 five star reviews for anything.Generally there's someone who doesn't like something about whatever it is, but this book well deserves the accolades it's received.I was completely turned around in my thinking after just reading the first two chapters, & I love the idea that "food" is not the problem.I would suggest also reading "Reinventing Your Life" by Jeffrey Young as a sort of companion piece to this book.Loved them both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening to say the least
This book is more than fantastic. It has helped me more than any book, any therapy, any friendship through my ED. It's like I have a pocket guide that understands exactly how I see the world and relates to how I feel. I recommend this book for all women. 50 5 star reviews doesn't lie.

5-0 out of 5 stars self-help book
This book was recommended to me by a psychologist and I have found it very interesting. It was delivered quickly and was in the condition described.

5-0 out of 5 stars New insights into the issue
It is my opinion that when all is said and done, there will be found to be lots of reasons why people struggle with weight issues. I think, for example, that the massive amounts of chemicals in our foods and in our general environment contribute greatly to the problem of obesity. But there are certainly other issues to the problem and this book addresses the emotional issues in an artful way.

I don't actually have an eating disorder but I still recognized the issues and appreciated the solutions the author presents so well. Those of us who do not deal with our issues by using food, but rather by other also indirect (and futile) ways, can also benefit from this book by simply substituting our misguided attempts at life's solutions (other addictions, whatever) with "food," and there you have it.

The fables and stories are pure, very creative, and can be applied to many of life's problems in order to provide needed insight for life change.

So, yes. I think this book would be helpful for those who have eating disorders, and maybe even for those of us who do not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Dr. Johnston! From a grateful reader!
Words cannot fully express what an excellent book this is! I've read several self-help books on happiness, eating behavior, Louise Hay books, Eckhart Tolle books, etc. This book is so unique in the way it delivers its message. I really enjoyed every chapter. After reading it a second time, I continue to grow and learn from it.

Thank you so much Anita, from one person to another, your book has touched me in so many ways, I cannot express it all.

I recommend any women w/emotional eating issues to read this book. You won't regret it. And please, after reading it take a few minutes of your time to write a review on it (here on Amazon). I rarely write reviews but was compelled to b/c this book was so incredible!

I wish everyone w/an eating issue to find their way to a more intuitive eating path.Namaste. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This book is a must read for anyone who has been touched by eating disorders! Dr. Jantz walks the reader through the pain and issues, always from a loving, compassionate- and relevant - Christian approach. The reader is guided to greater tools of healing and recovery through this book; the journal and "workbook" aspects of it alone, shine a much needed light of God's love and truth to the individual and to the disorder. It is a must read for those afflicted in any way, as well as for those within the field of eating disorder treatment and recovery!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great concepts for treating eating disorders
I am aminister that does counseling with individuals struggling with a variety of issues including eating disorders.

Over and over again I find that the issues that Dr. Jantz address in this book are common among those I counsel. Especially the area of unforgiveness. I am convinced that unforgiveness is the #1 root of much mental illness, addictions, and emotional instability.

I really appreciate Dr. Jantz's whole-person approach to the treating of eating disorders. Too many times counselors and treatment facilities only deal with changing behavior and ignore the other areas of a person's life. Based upon my experience, unless all areas of a person's life is addressed they will not experience long term recovery.

Reading teh book you come to understand that Dr. Jantz is interested in more than a person having victory over eating disorders-his goal is for them to become a whole person in all areas of their life.

2-0 out of 5 stars wasn't as helpful as I thought it would be.
As a woman of God, I looked to this book for hope and faith that one day I'll overcome my eating disorder. I am currently 2 years into recovery from EDNOS.

However, although this book isn't as bad as "the best little girl in the world," I was not pleased. I felt like it was going no where. I didn't really get any answers at all. The continuous repetitive thoughts going through my mind basically read "okay, but... I already knew that... what's next?"

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
If you are not a religious person, don't waste your time. Too much God and not enough healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope, Help, and Healing for Eating Disorders
This book gave me hope and has started to Heal my wounds from the past. The questions written in the book that you ask yourself are tough and do bring up painful memories. However, this is how you begin to heal and learn to forgive so that you can be set free from Anger, Unforgiveness and Shame and guilt. You do what you do to cope for a reason and a way of escape.

Product Description

Eating disorders present diagnostic and treatment challenges to clinicians. While such disorders need both medical and psychological treatment, patients may be too medically ill for a thorough psychiatric evaluation and may be misunderstood by many primary care physicians. In this revised and updated edition of Eating Disorders, Philip S. Mehler and Arnold E. Andersen provide a user-friendly and comprehensive guide for primary care physicians, mental health professionals, and others who encounter individuals with the problem.

Mehler and Andersen identify common medical complications that people who have eating disorders face and answer questions about how to treat them. They also cover such serious complications as osteoporosis, cardiac arrhythmia, electrolyte abnormalities, immune compromise, and gastrointestinal sequelae. Incorporating case studies, medical background on the complications, suggestions for diagnosis and treatment, and a list of selected references, chapters cover important topics including team treatment and nutritional rehabilitation. The authors also address special areas of concern, such as athletes who have eating disorders and the pharmacologic treatment of obesity.

Mehler and Andersen encourage close medical follow-up for patients who have eating disorders. This book will help primary care and mental health professionals to understand and to more effectively address the complex concerns of patients with eating disorders.

Praise for the first edition

"An excellent guide to the medical issues connected with eating disorders." -- Psychiatric Services

"This book provides useful and practical information to practitioners who are new to the care of patients with eating disorders while serving as a reference for those with more experience." -- Annals of Internal Medicine

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book for significant others and all loved ones
I'm a recovering individual. I'm sure this book is great for all loved ones, but I specifically tried to use it with my boyfriend. When there is a question in the book, such as "Should I confront my loved one when she/he is using symptoms?" the book offers a few suggestions, because no two individuals are alike. I highlighted the information that I wanted my boyfriend to take and turned over the corners on pages that were particularly important, to say, "You are not doing this and it's super important that you do!". Some of the great advice that I can remember is that you can confront someone about using symptoms but do not confront them WHILE they are using symptoms. For example, if your loved one is binging and purging, do not talk to them about it until later, in a safe and comfortable environment. It also said that some individuals want to be stopped from purging, while others do not, and that is a conversation one should have with their loved one. It gave tips for how to deflect questions such as, "Do I look fat?" It teaches skills where most loved ones are, unfortunately, sorely lacking.

If your loved one is trying to recover, I might give them this book and have them highlight some things, to see if there are any areas where they really want you to change some unhelpful behaviors. Keep in mind that some of the highlighting might be performed by the individual's eating disorder, but it IS her/his recovery. If you think some of what is highlighted is ridiculous and it's just to protect the eating disorder, then that may be a great thing to bring up in family/couples therapy. If your loved one is still in the midst of an eating disorder, not yet ready to work on recovery, then I would read this book without asking her/him to highlight anything. She/he might just use it to manipulate you, and they might not be ready to talk about their eating disorder at all.

I highly recommend this book to significant others, parents, siblings, and friends. It is a super quick and easy read. I recommend it to all my recovering friends when they ask me, "How can I help my family understand my eating disorder?"

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information, but very basic
Heaton and Strauss have written a book on a very complex topic - eating disorders - and have done a good job in breaking things down so that a caregiver or anyone who is concerened can help through practical means - in conversation, actions, etc... I felt that they provided some very good suggestions as to specific words that are helpful, and words that don't encourage.

I bought this book, as my mid-twenty year old girlfriend has anorexia. Unfortunately, I found that while good information was presented, it was very basic. For example, the first chapter talks about blame and how blaming others can complicate a situation. While this is true, I didn't need to be reminded of this simple fact.

There is no fluff in this book what-so-ever. It is simply filled with tons of suggestions of things to say or not to say, along with a description for each comment. I found it frustratingly simple, with, as I've said before, many topics that felt like common sense. I feel that this book, however, would be a fantastic resource for younger friends of a person with an ED, maybe for the middle school and early highschool years.

On average, I read about half the book within about a 3-day time period, and skimmed the rest.

Chapters include topics on:
Blame, understanding change, being in control of what you can and should be in control of, conversation basics, talking about body image, talking about messages from the media, talking about touch (for romantic relationships), talking about diet, talking about exercise, talking about professional help, talking to young people, managing emergencies, handling relapses, and a "dos and don'ts" chapter.

Each chapter is short, and, as I said before, have many of the "comments" in bold, with an explaination.

For me, this wasn't helpful, although it did affirm a lot that I already knew or felt. I will be searching for a more exhaustive resource, probably this time, one specifically on anorexia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really focuses on what the title suggests!
I found this book as a second try and I'm glad I did! When I had the need for a book on this subject I checked one out of the public library in my hometown. It was so bad I returned it after reading about half. I found this one on Amazon and ordered it without reviews but I'm happy I took a chance.

The focus of the book is on talking, communication and understanding. How to be the best support for a person you love. It empathetically explains what you can expect to help out with and kindly lets you know when to hold back or have patience and realize that you cannot control what someone else eats.

That said there is a lot that you can do to be supportive and encouraging. I have read each section and found myself better understanding what the person suffering from the eating disorder is actually thinking. How they are processing what we are saying, for good or bad.I realized that this is one disorder where it is so easy to try your best to be supportive but fail because your words are inadvertently hurtful or misunderstood.

What I also loved about this book was the lack of filler. It does not spend pages quoting side effects, endless paragraphs of examples that take up space or chapters dedicated to rehash. They wrote a book that filled a need and not to make money on a "hot" topic. It also lets you in on the fact that with an eating disorders there is no easy cure. Many of the books I looked at seemed to hint that if you followed this or that program you'd have this problem crossed off your list, and fast.

The author explains the long term situation, the 3 steps forward 2 steps back path that this disorder usually takes.I appreciated knowing that it might be a long road and not to expect miracles. I learned how to listen, so I'd know when to bring up certain subjects to get the ball rolling again or for the fist time.

Very insightful and informative.
Thank you Ms. Heaton and Ms. Strauss

Product Description

I've never had anorexia, but I know it well. I see it on the street, in the gaunt and sunken face, the bony chest, the spindly arms of an emaciated woman. I've come to recognize the flat look of despair, the hopelessness that follows, inevitably, from years of starvation. I think: That could have been my daughter. It wasn't. It's not. If I have anything to say about it, it won't be.

Millions of families are affected by eating disorders, which usually strike young women between the ages of fourteen and twenty. But current medical practice ties these families' hands when it comes to helping their children recover. Conventional medical wisdom dictates separating the patient from the family and insists that "it's not about the food," even as a family watches a child waste away before their eyes. Harriet Brown shows how counterproductive—and heartbreaking—this approach is by telling her daughter's story of anorexia. She describes how her family, with the support of an open-minded pediatrician and a therapist, helped her daughter recover using family-based treatment, also known as the Maudsley approach.

Chronicling her daughter Kitty's illness from the earliest warning signs, through its terrifying progression, and on toward recovery, Brown takes us on one family's journey into the world of anorexia nervosa, where starvation threatened her daughter's body and mind. But hope and love—of the ordinary, family-focused kind—shine through every decision and action she and her family took. Brave Girl Eating is essential reading for families and professionals alike, a guiding light for anyone who's coping with this devastating disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave Girl Eating
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and could not put it down.It is extremely well written and very insightful.I was educated on newer treatments for anorexia. It is a honest view of the myths that plague this condition.I was enlightened about how society is quick to pass judgement on a family when the disease caused the appearance of a "dysfunctional family".I would recommend this book !!Bravo!

5-0 out of 5 stars Painfully accurate, yet helpful read
As someone closely involved in an on-going, year-long battle with anorexia, I can attest to the accuracy of Harriet Brown's "Brave Girl Eating".This is the 4th book I've read so far on this horrible illness and the impact eating disorders (ED) have on the individual suffering and the family. This may also be the most helpful and supportive book I've read for several reasons.

First off Harriet Brown has lived the nightmare and writes from a completely different perspective than that presented by the professionals in the field. "Brave Girl Eating" is a reflection of what it is like to live with ED as it takes its toll on the individual with the disorder and the family. As I read Ms. Brown's recollections of meal-time battles, visits with doctors and therapists, the "re-feeding" process, and adapting to life with ED, I found myself frequently nodding in both agreement and sympathy.

Journalist Brown has also done her research and clearly explains the various schools of thought on what causes eating disorders (the jury is still out) and how to best approach treatment. Ms. Brown is clearly an advocate of the Maudsley approach which is a Family Based Therapy (FBT) approach: one in which the family is NOT blamed for the disorder AND is very much involved in the treatment and recovery process. She references Lock, James, and le Grange's Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder (also *****) which was the first book I'd read on eating disorders and is also a great resource.

"Brave Girl Eating" is a well researched and educational read as well as one that is heartbreaking and all-too-real. Yet it is ultimately inspirational and uplifting and I gained a lot of emotional strength from Harriet Brown and "Kitty's" perseverance and bravery. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Myth-busting, dramatic exploration of a family dealing with a daughter's anorexia
Reading Harriet Brown's excellent book I couldn't help thinking of The Exorcist -- in which the innocent child Regan is possessed by a demon, spewing obscenities, repelling all attempts to cast out the evil force that is threatening her life. Just as inexplicable and life-threatening is the sudden possession of 14-year-old Kitty Brown by the demon of anorexia which spawns self-hatred and the uncontrollable urge to punish herself through the withholding of food.

When I titled my review "myth-busting" I meant that, before reading this book I thought of eating disorders as the neuroses of the hyperprivileged raised by mothers who bought into the "a woman can't be too thin or too rich" credo. But Harriet Brown is grounded, well-informed; her family is functional and loving; the message she and her husband have always given to their daughters is of acceptance of the full range of healthy body sizes. So when Kitty starts limiting her diet to a few leaves of lettuce and a precisely-counted number of grapes, wasting away before her family's eyes, erupting into tirades that seem voiced by some alien within her that calls her a pig, disgusting, worthless, Harriet is mystified and fearful.

Despite inept therapists and obstructive insurance companies, and books that perpetuate outdated and downright damaging information, Brown rallies her journalistic discipline and her lioness-mother heart to save her daughter's life, and, by the book's end, has come to a place of hope. Not complete, easy triumph -- but hope. Her research leads her to FBT - Family Based Therapy, a grueling but effective treatment for anorexia that requires a family member to stay with the anorexic victim at all times, patiently coaxing her through every meal (which can take hours), making sure she doesn't purge afterward, helping to establish a zone of safety around the truly terrifying ordeal that eating has become.

It is amazing that this family weathered the trial of a mentally-ill family member and still stayed together, loving and supportive.Little Emma, ten at the onset of her sister's ordeal, is a voice of wry and often funny sanity. Jamie, Harriet's husband, doesn't understand, but remains a stand-up husband and dad. Kudos to this family. The book is a page-turner, and I would imagine a lifesaver for families and individuals experiencing this bizarre kind of hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing read
I've spent the past year researching eating disorders for my senior thesis for college (studio art major doing an exhibition of the physical and emotional effects of eating disorders). This book was truly insightful into the effects that Anorexia has on both the person with the disease and the families of people with the disease. It was an absolute page turner, and I found myself tearing up at some points. Excellent read, I would suggest it to anyone, anywhere, anytime.

4-0 out of 5 stars More than wanting to be skinny..............
I wanted to read this book because I am the antithesis of anorexia. I couldnt understand how someone could willingly starve themselves. Do I want to be thin? of course! But to deny myself food, its not happening! This book helped me understand that it is more a mental thing, a brain illness, an inner voice telling you that you should not eat. My inner voice says that too, but I dont pay attention, LOL! Then after a while of self starvation, you seem to lose all sensations of hunger. Weird. Kind of self preservation I guess, like some POWs from Vietnam cant or wont talk about their time there. They seem to forget their bad experiences or block them out, like an anorexic blocks out the hunger pangs, because food is too scary or harmful.

I'm glad I read it but I am still a bit fuzzy about anorexia and why some people get it and some people dont. Is it chemical? Is it hereditary? Is it how you were parented? Was it one comment or look from a stranger? Was it one snub by a boy you liked? Was it being teased by a mean girl at school? Is it because we, as a culture, put so much emphasis on looks and appearance through TV, magazines or movies?

I dont think we give young women enough credit for being smart, or strong or capable or independent. It shouldnt matter if you weigh 100 pounds or 200 pounds or more. The essence of who we are lies at our core, not in the outside covering.

I have to give a standing ovation to Harriet Brown and her family. She showed some fierce mother love to her daughter, instead of just putting her in some facility because it would be easier.I wish nothing but the best for the author and her family. They deserve it. ... Read more

Hello Marcia,
I am a nutritionist somewhat new to the field of eating disorders (2004). I am re-reading your treatment manual for the second time. I find it such a useful tool. I was justmoved to let you know how wonderful it is to receive this information.
When I am in doubt, your book sets me straight.
Thank you for putting all this out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 Stars on a 5-Star Scale: an Excellent Continued Education Cross-Trainer!
As a psychologist in practice, in picking up this book on nutrition counseling by a nutrition expert, I was expecting psychotherapy to be accorded its usual short shrift and after-thought status that seems so common for the nutritional literature on eating disordrs. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only is the book calling for a non-nominal coordination of nutritional and psychological disciplines, the nutritional angle itself is presented with an extraordinary degree of psychological savvy.

Case in point: in addition to the coverage of various psychological treatment paradigms, the book offers process suggestions for nutritional counselors on managing self-disclosure, splitting, idealization, countertransference. The first two chapters are smartly subdivided into basic nutritional counseling (more educational in scope) and advanced nutrtional counseling that integrates nutritional counseling and psychotherapy.

While empirically authoritative and technically comprehensive, the book is also highly pragmatic. Dr. Herrin continuously offers direct speech suggestions of how to pitch a certain educational theme or tid-bit to a prospective client.Throughout the book, the reader keeps stumbling upon highly practical counseling gems that begin with "explan this" or "you might want to say this."This pragmatic refrain helps the reader to pause and translate the material into hypothetical counseling exchanges.

I particularly appreciated the no-nonsense harm-reduction orientation of the book: this is most evident in the discussion of normalizing the relationship with "fun foods," as well as in the discussion of managing binge-eating through paradoxical harm-reduction binge-schedulng alternatives.

The "intervention" core of the book, consisting of the following five chapters, is impeccable: "Weight Management," "Managing Weight Restoration" (a euphemism for "weight gain/weight normalization"), "Managing Binge Eating," "Managing Purging," and "Exercise Management."

Herrin's amazingly effective: page for page she offers tremendous informational density - without (!) creating a sense of informational satiation. Her narrative style feels light but never superficial. Her handling of the medical repercussions of purging is a wonderful example of that: in the span of just a few pages, Herrin manages to provide a panoramic overview of dental, electrolyte, cardiac, GI and other types of medical complications that can result from purging.

She offers a similarly effective overview of misuse of veganism/vegetarianism (as a socially sanctioned cover for restrictive eating), of eating pregnancy, and of other "special issues."She offers an extensive Appendix with forms, tables and handouts (check out Appendix E - "Recovery Plan" for binge-prevention and post-binge damage control).

In sum, the book seems to round out the respective educational-professional fortes of nutritional and psychological counselors.Nutritional counselors stand to learn more about the counseling aspect of nutritional counseling and psychologists working with eating disorders stand to learn more about the nutritional nuts and bolts of the eating disorder presentations that might otherwise be left unattended in the guilt-shame shade of client's ego-saving defenses.

Herrin's "Nutrition Counseling" is an excellent continued education cross-trainer!

5-0 out of 5 stars Totally worth the $35!!!!!!!!!!
As a student of nutrition/dietetics and as a girl who has had anorexia & bulimia for about 5 years, I found this text to be insightful, motivational, and practical. It helped me see how all the nutrition info and diet guidelines I have learned as a student REALLY DO apply to ME, even though I have an eating disorder. Thinking about diet therapy, eating patterns, and other food-related behaviors from a clinical perspective has helped me step outside myself and get a clearer view of my own behaviors. The book has helped me trust my body more and be more willing to experiment with dietary changes.

This book really emphasizes the fact that Registered Dietitians treating eating disordered patients cannot double as psychotherapists but must have a strong background in psychology to be successful. Food and eating is so central to our being. All nutritionists need to be aware of the psychological reasonings behind food behaviors (especially with eating disorders!!!) so that do-able dietary advise can be given.

What I learned from this book will make me a much better RD for all nutritional problems! I think all dietetics students should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical information with a thoughtful delivery
This book provides the information that Registered Dietitians need when working with patients struggling with eating disorders. It fills in the gap between a dietitians' final internship and years of hands on experience.Marcia understands what information patients need and how to deliver it.The tone of the book is right on, helping the reader understand the supportive educational role that dietitians should provide.I wish I wrote it first! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars a good try
this is a great workbook for people who have the time for a lot of writing and reflection -- and willpower to stay on track. an avid reader and searcher for all things pertaining to the treatment of eating disorders, i did not find this book to be much help above and beyond what you normally read in all the other "self help" books. Basically, it summarizes the other books and puts it into question/answer form. it also does not go into each area deeply enough to provide what i would consider lasting effects of treatment from the reflection. a good therapist and support group and/or network of support will do better than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was so helpful
This book was so helpful in helping me better understand eating disorders and how they act as coping mechanisms.I used to think it was just about the wish to look better and lose weight. I now really understand how psychological it is, and this book was so insightful in helping me put together the skills and tools I need to recover from my eating disorder.I would, without hesitation, recommend this book to anyone struggling with an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me so much
I have anorexia for a year and it is so hard. I feel like nobody understands and my friends think I am weird and don't want to be friends anymore but when I read this book I felt like finally someone understands and I don't have to live like this anymore. I am not all better yet but I am working hard and this book helps a lot. I wish my friends would read it and that teachers could understand that I don't do this on purpose. The chapter for parents helped my mom alot. I hope anybody that has an eating disorder can read ths book and get help. And I hope that someone writes a book for friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disagree with the others
This book is a much needed book. It has a unique flair and is incredibly invaluable for anyone in recovery. I have been using it with my therapist and have found it to be helping my recovery above and beyond what I would be doing in just my sessions alone.I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a task oriented approach to therapy.

1-0 out of 5 stars A lot of the same material, done again
I think the concept of the book is a great one, but it would be helpful to talk more about recovery from a personal perspective. The book has a lot of material that I have read before, it is just rewritten a different way.

I also think it is too pricey. ... Read more

Product Description
"Drawing from Within" is an introductory guide for those wanting to explore the use of art with clients with eating disorders. Art therapy is a particularly effective therapeutic intervention for this group, as it allows them to express uncomfortable thoughts and feelings through artistic media rather than having to explain them verbally. Lisa D. Hinz outlines the areas around which the therapist can design effective treatment programmes, covering family influences, body image, self-acceptance, problem solving and spirituality. Each area is discussed in a separate chapter and is accompanied by suggestions for exercises, with advice on materials to use and how to implement them. Case examples show how a therapy programme can be tailored to the individual client and photographs of client artwork illustrate the text throughout. Practical and accessible to practitioners at all levels of experience, this book gives new hope to therapists and other mental health professionals who want to explore the potential of using art with clients with eating disorders. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars structure the freedom!
this is a very thoughtfully organised and informative book. It covers important topics of the eating disorders in an developmental way: the past, present and future of the patient's history, as well as the developing stages of the therapy. It offers an introduction to each theme and suggests art directives (about 60 in total) as well as discusses possible themes that might appear in therapy. There is a clear emphasis on a specific structure- throughout the book chapters- which is also suggested in the process of therapy. I was a bit uncomfortable with the suggestion of using merely size A3 sheets of paper as it is not explained whether there is a reason to give specific size boundaries for the specific patients (apart from making a nice portfolio of the work at the end of therapy). The 28 figures in the book are very informative.I wish there were a few more. The bibliography is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential
Drawing from Within: Using Art to Treat Eating Disorders is a fine reference for practitioner who wish to explore the therapeutic use of art with clients with eating disorders. Art therapy has been successfully used as intervention with this client group: chapters cover themes which can embrace programs, offering suggestions for creating and implementing exercises and translating results to therapy. It's the hands-on application of theory to results which makes DRAWING FROM WITHIN so essential for any working with clients with eating disorders - and for college-level libraries strong in psychology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
This book reads more like a leisure read than a text book. I might be biased because I have a passion for understanding EDs. There are many misconceptions about these disorders and Keel does a fantastic job of correcting these in an informed manner. This books delves into etiology, symptomatoglogy, treatment, prevention, nature, and of course definitive characteristics of EDs. It also touched briefly on obesity. A definite page turner, which is strange to say about a text book. I loved it and strongly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Note the author has written two different books that Amazon lumps together
Expanding on a point made by a previous reviewer, I'd like to clarify something about these great books -- Dr. Keel has two different books available -- but Amazon has lumped them together as one entry.

The earlier text (2004 edition) that is a paperback/soft cover is a more advanced book geared towards a more advanced audience (college students, graduate students, health care professionals). The previous reviewer referred to this as the 'expanded' text.

The later text (2006) that is labeled hardcover/library binding, is actually aimed at a younger audience (junior high/senior high school students).

But both serve an valuable niche in this important field.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Eating Disorder Book Ever
This is the most thorough, well researched eating disorder book I have found.(I did send this edition back to Amazon because I wanted the newer, expanded paperback version.)I highly recommend both books but I was particularly happy with the expanded edition.I am shocked that it has taken such a long time for someone to write an intelligent book on eating disorders that is accessible to both professionals and the general public as well. This is a book that everyone with an interest in Eating Disorders should own.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on eating disorders I've seen so far
One difficulty that I have had as a psychologist is finding good books to recommend to others that actually incorporate recent research and make it available to the reader in a manageable fashion. All too often, eating disorders books seem to be like many generic self-help books - having a greater filling of anecdotes and personal accounts than of actual substance. Up until now, I really couldn't recommend a book on this subject to colleagues or friends.

This book seems to fill an overlooked niche. It is a book that would be appropriate for a college course on the topic, but it also serves as an excellent and up-to-date overview for anyone interested in anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. A unique aspect of this book is that it discusses the complexity of eating disorders - addressing both the biological and environmental influences in easy to understand language (for college students, counselors, or even Moms and Dads). Plus, the chapter on prevention is a welcome addition that most authors overlook.

Dr. Keel (formerly at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital) is clearly one of the stars in this field. And she brings her clinical, research, and teaching expertise to bear in creating a book that should be on the bookshelf of every clinician and clinical professor. Moreover, it's a book you can give to friends or relatives who just want to educate themselves about eating disorders. Highly recommended and worth reading. ... Read more

Product Description

Eating disorders (EDs) affect at least 11 million people in the United States each year and spread across age, race, ethnicity and socio-economic class. While professional literature on the subject has grown a great deal in the past 30 years, it tends to be exclusively research-based and lacking expert clinical commentary on treatment. This volume focuses on just such commentary, with chapters authored by both expert clinicians and researchers. Core issues such as assessment and diagnosis, the correlation between EDs and weight and nutrition, and medical/psychiatric management are discussed, as are the underrepresented issues of treatment differences based on gender and culture, the applications of neuroscience, EDNOS, comorbid psychiatric disorders and the impact of psychiatric medications. This volume uniquely bridges the gap between theoretical findings and actual practice, borrowing a bench-to-bedside approach from medical research.

* Includes real-world clinical findings that will improve the level of care readers can provide, consolidated in one place
* Underrepresented issues such as gender, culture, EDNOS and comorbidity are covered in full
* Represents outstanding scholarship, with each chapter written by an expert in the topic area

Product Description
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been proven effective for treating Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. However, this type of program requires at least 6 months of weekly sessions with a qualified mental health professional. If you suffer from an eating disorder and want to get treatment, but have little time to devote to therapy, a shorter, time-limited program may be right for you.

This workbook outlines a Guided Self-Help (GSH) program based on the principles of CBT. Although sessions with a therapist or clinician are required, there are usually no more than 12 and each one is only 25 minutes long. You will do much of the treatment on your own using the workbook as your guide. You will learn and practice the skills you need to overcome your eating disorder and establish healthy habits, while consulting with your therapist for encouragement and support. Through daily self-monitoring of your eating patterns, and strategies such as challenging negative thoughts and formal problem-solving, you will reduce your desire to binge and purge. GSH is hard work, but the benefits are well worth it. If you have the desire and the drive, you can use this workbook to eliminate your eating disorder once and for all.

A new understanding and approach to eating disorders from a renowned expert, coauthor of the classic Dying to Be Thin

Nearly 5 percent of Americans face an eating disorder -- and eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Long considered an affliction of young women, they are now common among young men, middle-aged women, and even children as young as five. This is a health crisis of epidemic proportions.

Regaining Your Self offers hope in the battle against eating disorders through a radical new therapy technique pioneered by Ira M. Sacker, M.D. A leader in the field, Dr. Sacker has been treating patients with eating disorders for thirty-five years. This breakthrough book, filled with firsthand accounts from patients, family members, friends, and others, provides what patients and their families desperately need: a therapeutic model that heals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who am I?
This book gives an excellent view of one of the main difficulties in overcoming an eating disorder.Ira Sacker draws from his years of experience helping people overcome what he calls the "eating disorder identity" and get to the true issues behind the behaviors.

2-0 out of 5 stars A somewhat mysteriousbook on Eating Disorders
This book may be a good introduction for those who have never read anything about eating disorders, but those familiar with the literature are likely to find themselves disappointed in this somewhat strange little book. While Dr Sacker is a well-known individual in the field, on examination, it's hard to really know just how much of this book he actually wrote. The book is attributed to Sacker "with" Shela Buff...yet we never once hear who she is, a fairly sure sign that the book has been ghost written. To compound the mystery, inside we find Laura McDonald M.S. given credit for "writing, editing and development of theory", as well as providing "heart and soul" to the book. Given both of these attributions, one begins to wonder just how much Dr. Sacker actually had to do with the production of this book.

Readers may also find the organization of the text irritating. Perhaps 50% of the pages contain excerpts from that page's text, extracted and highlighted in boxes of their own.In some instances the excerpts are direct quotes from the text, in others several sentences have been modified or combined to make new sentences.I found this unrelenting editorial convention to be obnoxious and distracting and other readers may find it the same.

In regards to the book's content, while case studies are mentioned, rarely, if ever, do we hear from the clients themselves. This sort of summarizing may leave many readers who have eating disorders themselves feeling like bystanders.

When we finally get to Dr Sacker's "Bold New Approach" we find that it consists of discovering the things in life that the client is truly passionate about, encouraging the client to pursue these passions, thereby establishing a more authentic self-identity to replace that which their ED currently provides them with. While this approach is a useful, honest and legitimate one, those familiar with ED treatment may find it somewhat simplistic, and not quite the bold and novel approach the book promises.

While Dr Sacker is obviously a caring and insightful individual, those familiar with the many good books on EDs currently in print may find themselves left wondering about the nature of Dr Sacker's connection to it, and how and why it came to be written in the first place.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good framework but lacking practical guidance
I found this book to be of interest so far as framing the core issues surrounding eating disorders. However it is lacking in practical application.I did not find any concrete guidance on what I could do myself to attack these issues. Instead the author focuses on his prowess in the theraputic environment and offers little advice on how to find a similar environment or tangible activities a person suffering from a disorder can follow. There are many web links and organizations listed in the back - but that does little to guide me on where to go from here.I think the book is ultimately better for the therapist versus the patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars " Innovative and Informative"
I really enjoyed reading the book "Regaining Your Self" by Ira M. Sacker. Having had an eating disorder in my teens, I found this book both innovative and informative. His approach is transformational. Dr. Sacker's approach known as PIRT - Personal Interactive Rational Therapy. This approach provides a basic framework that moves the patient toward their own personal recovery. I found this book to be compassionate, intuitive, heart felt and honest.

Another book I read and really enjoyed was Working on Yourself Doesn't Work: The 3 Simple Ideas That Will Instantaneously Transform Your Life by award winning authors Ariel and Shya Kane. This book is refreshing and light, and a wonderful way to assist in freeing yourself from your old perceptions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't look here for insight.
This book is probably the weakest personal account of an eating disorder i have read.Chelsea is juvenile in her idealisms and shallow in her everyday thoughts and concerns.I am not saying she didn't suffer, I just think that this was one journal that didn't need to go to print.I highly recommend WASTED by marya hornbacher< spelling?that is a deep, teeth to the bones story.she dosn't dance around anything. it is served straight up and often leaves those who have been there speachless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
I think this book is realistic. From her journal, she lets you in on her thoughts and concerns, when in most cases you would never be able to get that kind of insight.Coming from having an eating disorder myself, it helped to know that I wasn't alone in my situation. Also, the added words from her mother gives most of us a point of view we would never truly get an opportunity to hear.As long as you remember to take it as the story of her struggle and her recovery, I think it is worth reading. If you can't relate to it, it still has good insight for a friend or a family member, or anyone interested in the subject of eating disorders.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
Vapid, self-important, and poorly written, this book is also chock full of religious claptrap and the rationalizing of a spoiled brat.I'm happy that Chelsea recovered, but can't believe that anybody decided that this "journal" was worth putting into print.Very few redeeming qualities.

4-0 out of 5 stars Success!
Finally a book about eating disorders that isn't all sarcasm and would be wit.A book about a girls battles and triumphs, fears and ambitions, but most importantly about herself, her needs and her recovery.

Chelsea Smith's diary entries become tediously repetitive in their adolescent appeals to "God"."I'm so glad I have God", she writes.I believe that faith can help those suffering from eating disorders overcome their obstacles to recovery, but Chelsea's book didn't really delve into the emotional roots of her eating disorder. The entire book reads like a pre-teen's diary (even her entries as a young adult), full of empty platitudes.Nothing new here.I recommend instead Cindy Nappa Bitter's book, "Good Enough."It opens up all the emotional agony that provokes an eating disorder, but in such a way that anyone can relate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Motivational Devotions for the day
I love reading this page by page each day because somehow, it really does seem to relate to what is going on in my life which is amazing. However, My book looks nothing like the book that is show, and by that I mean it isn't the peach color that my therapist has. Instead it is brown. So,I am not sure why that is and why that isn't matching up but eiter way it is a good daily devotion book for eating disorders and I wasn't going to make a fuss about it!

4-0 out of 5 stars I think it's working
I have only been reading this book for about a month, so I have not been through all the readings. So far, the book has been helpful to me as I deal with anorexia. Most of the books that I have read that deal with eating disorders seem to deal more with overeating, but this one alsoseems to give a nod to those of us who restrict our eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great daily help to recovery from eating disorders
