In straightforward, clear, and pragmatic language, McFarland presents a model that focuses on strengths rather than weaknesses, on solutions rather than problems, and on hope rather than despair. Her book should be on the shelf of every clinician who works with clients who have eating problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Professionally written and practical
This is a very well written and professionally informative book. The drawback to most professional works dealing with counselling practice is the way the information is presented--often much incisive information but presented without what I term the practical thread of application. This book is written intelligently and is immensely practical, a genuine pleasure to read. The author explains why she uses solution based short therapy and then reviews other methods of counselling, discusses each area of the process with case histories of anorexics, bulimics and so on plus their family interactions. My practice involves a general medicine practice ,with large chunks of family counselling interspesed, and this book is so useful both for initial assessment and management of eating disorders and many other aspects of life for teens and adults. It cannot sort out all patient issues and there are of course, referrals onwards, but it has worked very well for many of my patients. The astounding thing for many doctors is that so many of our patients have eating issues and we can offer so much by some of the simple steps in this book, which does not assign blame to any one, but instead actually makes patients sit back in wonder and lead "alternate lives" as the book puts it.We are often so guilty of ignoring the tentative feelers put out by patients as to "other concerns" of theirs, extending beyond medication, and this book offers the best first steps and often all the steps that are required. It will not tie up hours of your time, and yet leaves you with a sense of having helped your patient beyond medication, and referring them onwards at the appropriate time if need be. I cannot recommend it highly enough. ... Read more

Product Description
More than simple cases of dieting gone awry, eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia are among the most fatal of mental illnesses, responsible for more deaths each year than any other psychiatric disorder. These illnesses afflict millions of young people, especially women, all over the world.
Carrie Arnold developed anorexia as an adolescent and nearly lost her life to the disease. In Next to Nothing, she tells the story of her descent into anorexia, how and why she fell victim to this mysterious illness, and how she was able to seek help and recover after years of therapy and hard work. Now an adult, Arnold uses her own experiences to offer practical advice and guidance to young adults who have recently been diagnosed with an eating disorder, or who are at risk for developing one. Drawing on the expertise of B. Timothy Walsh, M.D., one of America's leading authorities on eating disorders, she reveals in easy-to-understand terms what is known and not known medically about anorexia and bulimia. The book covers such difficult topics as how to make sense of a diagnosis, the various psychotherapies available to those struggling with an eating disorder, psychiatric hospitalization, and how to talk about these illnesses to family and friends. The result is both a compelling memoir and a practical guide that will help to ease the isolation that an eating disorder can impose, showing young people how to manage and maintain their recovery on a daily basis.
Part of the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative series of books written specifically for teens and young adults, Next to Nothing will also be a valuable resource to the friends and family of those with eating disorders. It offers much-needed hope to young people, helping them to overcome these illnesses and lead productive and healthy lives. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Cut and Paste
What seems to be advertised as Ms. Arnold's experience with battling her eating disorder, is actually a to-do list layed out with bullet points, interspersed with pieces of her treatment jaunts, leaving the reader not hanging, but rather scratching their head wondering what the heck was going on. The author tries to channel the writing of another well known, published author who also wrote about her struggles with an eating disorder, yet, this author falls short on the wit and dark humor; instead appearing as if she had forgotten the punchline to a joke.

5-0 out of 5 stars A really good book
This book is full of useful information that can help those with an eating disorder, their familes and friends and those interested in general information. What she went through is spread all over in the book. I also found lot's of good ideas to use when confronting ED type behaviors.

3-0 out of 5 stars A firsthand account of one teenager's experience with TREATING an eating disorder
If you are looking for a book that tells a little bit about what an eating disorder is like, giving a pretty accurate depiction in very few pages, and then focuses for the duration on treatment, this is the book for you.Carrie describes her experience with an eating disorder in about 25 pages, and then spends the next 120 pages talking about treatment, the options available, explaining the medical diagnostic side, tips during treatment, etc.If you are someone with an eating disorder that has decided to recover, someone that knows someone with an eating disorder and want to help them recover, or just want to find out about the treatment process, this book is perfect. However, if you want a book that truly describes "a firsthand account of one teenager's experience with an eating disorder" go read Wasted by Marya Hornbacher.

While this book was well written, and didn't have anything technically wrong with it (although I must say I quit reading shortly after she started talking about treatment, so I can't give a fully accurate review), the title is misleading. It isn't a book about her experience with an ED.It is all about treatment.I didn't want a book on treatment.I wanted a book on what it was like to have an eating disorder.

Know what you want to get out of the book, and then you will know if this is the book for you or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for anyone who is affected by an eating disorder
This is a remarkable book of it's type.It is a comprehensive resource for all who is in some way affected by an eating disorder whether it be your child, yourself, your friend... I would even recomend this book to professionals working with someone afflicted with anorexia or bulimia. This book is written by a young woman and is geared toward adolescent eating disorders, but I find it valuable even for those who are older. It is an especially helpful book for loved ones or other people who want to understand eating disorders, how they manifest and take over one's thinking and eventually one's whole life. The book offers insites on finding therapy and dealing with relapse.I have read literally hundreds of books dealing with eating disorders and I don't always find them helpful, infact many inadvertantly (or not :)...) become a part of some anorexic and bulimic individuals' pathology. This book is honest and straight forward and it is not a book that many will use to "trigger" themselves to continue eating-disordered behavior, I find it to be one that promotes recovery and honor's the "self" in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I remember reading this book a little over a year ago, when my eating disorder really started to take its grip.At times, I wanted to keep going down the path that I was creating for myself, while at others, it was inspiring and made me want to stop before it was too late.Though I did not stop and went down the path of anorexia, it would be interesting to read again after the fact, and I may have a different opinion about it.
It is in a very easy to read format, supportive, and informative. ... Read more

A source of hope and valuable information for parents of children with eating disorders

This poignant and informative narrative relates how one mother rescued her daughter from the "experts" and treated the girl's life-threatening anorexia using a controversial approach. Known as the Maudsley Approach, this home-based, family-centered therapy, developed in Great Britain in the 1980s, has been receiving a lot of press here over the past few years. While it has been widely used in Europe for many years and is rapidly gaining acceptance among parents and within the pediatric and child psychiatric communities in the United States, until now, there were no popular books on the subject. Must-reading for parents of children with eating disorders, Eating with Your Anorexic is:

  • The first popular book on an increasingly popular approach to curing eating disorders
  • A source of practical information and guidance for parents of children with eating disorders
  • An eloquent narrative filled with pathos that inspires, empowers, and informs

1-0 out of 5 stars A must-NOT read
I started this book with doubts. The title uses the term "anorexic", which is in fact frowned upon, as it attaches the disease the the sufferer and makes it part of defining them. It is far better to use the term "person WITH anorexia", as one would say a person WITH a cold, or a person with cancer. However, that was a tiny indiscretion compared to the rest of this book. Let me start by saying that I have personal experience with the maudlsey program, and it is a fantastic thing. However, Collins seemed to go against all that it teaches. Nutritionists agree that calorie counting is a very bad thing, and that it is far better to adhere to a guideline with the number of fruits, grains, fats, etc. Meanwhile, Collins was downloading calorie trackers and seeming gleeful in writing down every thing that Olympia ate.Reading about the way that she hid and lied about what was in her daughters food was also quite offensive. The nutritionists, therapists, and doctors that I have worked with under Maudlsey have agreed that transparency and honesty is much healthier and helpful to your relationship with your child then, for example, hiding butter in milk is. The kicker to all this was the smug tone the author had throughout the entire book. She seemed hugely controlling and self congratulatory, and focused much more on her emotions than her daughters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver and what got me started in taking charge
Thank you Laura Collins, for sharing your experience, your trials, and finally your approach and its success. Along with this book, which helped me realize that I had to take charge and NOW, I recommend "Help your teenager beat an eating disorder" and "the parent's guide to eating disorders".

1-0 out of 5 stars Would not recommend this book
I would never recommend this book to parents with a child who has been diagnosed with an eating disorder.Ms. Collin's attitude is very smug and she sounds like she has some serious control issues.I bought this book thinking it would have practical suggestions on how to eat with my daughter.Ms. Collins does not give any practical suggestions at all.Our family has tried the Maudsley approach (with the help of Stanford Hospital and their eating disorder clinic) to re-feeding and it did not work with my child. My daughter was too smart to let me add a lot of calories to her food and refused to eat.I finally realized that Maudsley does not usually work with older adolescents.

In Chapter 24, the author writes "I must tell you how incredulous I am, even now, that most anorexics must be hospitalized before the most simple and effective treatment known to science for eating disorders is administered:three square meals a day." What a arrogant sentence. My daughter was hospitalized several times due to medical instability because of her anorexia. It wasn't that we weren't trying at home to re-feed her.Ms. Collins makes it sound like that all you have to do is place the plate in front of the anorexic and she will eat. There may be some bumps along the way, but eventually she will cave and do what "mom" says. If only it was that simple.

This book is more about the "look at me! look what I've done" attitude of Laura Collins. I would not recommend buying this book if you want suggestions on helping your child through family based treatment. The book to read is "Help your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder" by James Lock.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
This book, while the story is admirable, did not provide any significant help for our family that has a young child with an eating disorder. I was looking for an evidence based and thoughtful guideline to help us, which this is most definitely NOT.Instead, it is a rant against society and the medical community. Instead, I would recommend "How to help your teenager beat an eating disorder" which is written by knowledgable medical experts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be willing to think differently about anorexia . . .
I just finished this book last week. Laura clearly has a talent at writing.I found the book to be engaging and real.By the end of the book, I felt like Laura really understood me and all of our experiences as we have treated our son.I also felt like she accurately challenged many of the current problems in treating anorexia with mostly her mother's instinct.I personally think she was right on the mark.I'd like to have her courage and influence in speaking out and changing inaccurate perceptions (see some of the reviews below) of what anorexia is and what it isn't. ... Re: What Every Therapist Needs to Know About Treating Eating & Weight IssuesBy
Ms. Karen R. Koenig, LCSW
Sarasota, Florida

Dear Publisher:

As a psychotherapist who has not personally experienced the difficulties of eating disorders and weight management issues, I am greatly enlightened by this book. Koenig addresses the entire gamut of interactions between food and all aspects of life including family relationships, medical issues, and individual struggles with food and normal eating. The structure of the book with the "thinking points" following each concept is an interesting technique for focusing the clinician on the important factors in each section. This is a most informative resource book for non-specialist clinicians and specialists as well.

Cordially yours,

Sandra Z. Zellick, Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, helpful read
As a therapist, I have often believed there were eating issues for my clients that I just wasn't reaching. This book validated what I suspected. It has given me tools in the form of real knowledge and ways of thinking about and questioning clients to help bring eating issues into the open. After reading this book, I feel I have a better working knowledge of not only the eating disturbances, but also the issues often underlying them. Ms. Koenig writes in a very specific and direct way it is easy to read and easy to use this new knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great help for therapists
I've been a therapist for over 30 years, and eating problems in women have not gone away--they've just gone more underground.Since these issues are likely to crop up with clients, I think every therapist who works with women should take the time to read this book--even if eating problems are not central to their clients' problems. In each chapter, Ms. Koenig provides clear questions that the therapists can ask and reviews the key issues of self-worth, reward and comfort, the biology and dangers of eating disorders as well as family dynamics and the impact of phase of life-cycle issues.I own this book and have already used it to assess some of the women in my practice and research.Dr. LeslieBeth Wish ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A Crock
This book misrepresents eating disorders and makes eating disorder sufferers almost seem psychotic. The author is very inexperienced with eating disorders and only has her word to back up her statements. She puts down eating disorder facts that have proven to be true. The one good thing about the book is how she encourages treating victims of eating disorders with love and compassion.I think her kindness is what drew her clients. She states that her way is the only way to help anorexics which ignores the fact that people are individuals. And she ignores the fact that other therapists besides her have had a high success rate. Some of her theories almost seem demonic or mystical.Almost like those with eating disorders are saints or psychics of some sort. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT HONEST BOOK!!
I have never written a review....who has the time? And I have read MANY, MANY books on eating disorders. This book, however, is worth the time to express how well written it is!I loved her honesty and thoroughness.I loved her hope.I loved her simplicity in writing....nothing flowery or overly deep and wordy. In my stage of recovery, this is exactly the book I needed to read.I will be purchasing her first book today.

Don't hesitate to buy....a great, great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jenni Does it Again!
Jenni offers another inside view of recovery from an eating disorder. She touches on the struggles and accomplishments that she experienced while recovering from both Anorexia and Bulimia. She doesn't preach but rather offers an insight into what helped her and what might potentially help someone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Candid Discussion of What it Takes to Overcome an Eating DIsorder
Jenni is a leader in the field of eating disorder advocacy and awareness. She continues to inspire recovery, hope and the courage to take the next step in each individuals recovery.Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Eating Disorder Resources
This is a great follow up to Life without ED, her first book. It is easy to read, you can start it and put it down and go back to the places you find especially helpful, this book is a must read for those coping with ED. This is also a good resources for thwe family and friends of the victim( I say victim not patient). ED is a criminal that attacks the mind and needs to be arrested and taken away, not lived with. This book will be helpful for the beginner as well as a veteran of the ED war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time for us ALL to start talking about the next stage beyond recovery
An important and wonderfully engaging book for current patients, recent patients, and fully recovered patients and their families. This book is a celebration and exploration of a stage we rarely talk about: beyond recovery to LIFE.

It is time to speak up and talk with optimism and joy and humor - as well as the work - of really living beyond ED. So much of what is written in the ED world is harrowing and heartfelt but not necessarily helpful. Schaefer steps beyond the clichés and into real innovative thought. I am truly an admirer. ... Product Description
The statistics are powerful and alarming: Perhaps as manyas 6 million Americans suffer from night eating syndrome, or NES—anewly identified eating disorder which describes behavior patterns inwhich an individual obsessively consumes more than half of his or herdaily caloric intake after eight o’clock in the evening. Moresignificant is the further finding that more than 33 percent ofmorbidly obese individuals—persons who are 100 or more poundsoverweight—are affected by this disorder.Experts agree that NESshares characteristic of not only eating disorders but also sleep andmood disorders. Sufferers tend to exhibit symptoms such as feelings ofanxiety and guilt, insomnia or interrupted sleep. Typical NESbehaviors include absent appetite during the day, a consistent patternof eating more food after dinner than during the meal itself, andrecurrent episodes of waking and eating throughout the night.Thisbook, the first written specifically to people struggling with NES,offers a step-by-step strategy for managing and overcoming thisdisorder.

Readers will first learn to identify the signs of NES, and then use journaling exercises to discover what automatic thoughts surround their night eating. I enjoyed my purchase, it was easy great product and arrived early. The seller discribed it well in the write up so I knew exactly what I was geting and was happy on the transaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful and helpful
This book contained a lot of diverse information about overeating. It's been very helpful. Most books devoted to the problem of overeating and overweight have one or two main themes that are expanded to fill a whole book. This text contains many kinds of information, much of it quite practical.

4-0 out of 5 stars Night Eating Syndrome
I believe it goes along with most eating things - keeping a journal will aid in so many things.I think it is a great idea to figure out the "issue" and go from there.Syndrome covers a lot of area!I believe that this book is very informative and something one should definitely share with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars not alone
I have struggled with night eating for many years. When I would speak to my doctor about this he was very unaware of this type of eating. I am very pleased that this has been researched. I believe that most people were unaware that we were not the only ones eating at night. The book was a huge help to me.
Thank you,

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple Book About Understanding And Overcoming NES
****
This is a simple, but thorough book about Night Eating Syndrome, a quick read (only 167 pages), but full of information. It starts out with assistance in evaluating if you have NES...however, I think that this book would be helpful to anyone who overeats at night, whether or not they fit all of the criteria for NES.

It includes chapters on how to rule out other eating disorders and physical disorders, the biology and psychology behind night eating, hormonal involvement in night eating, types of night and eating and suggestions/plans for overcoming each. The interventions are pretty predictable, but still helpful, including journaling, imagery, relaxation, and other behavioral interventions.Support, medications, perseverance, and Internet resources are also discussed.

All in all I thought it was a fine, easy to understand book about a little-discussed disorder just now coming to public attention.

One saw glimmers of hope and researched to find the best care; the other had no intentions of getting better and researched new and clever ways to hide her compulsion. Such is the distorted reality in this riveting true account of a teen caught in the grips of an eating disorder and the mother who struggled to help her break free.

Through their gripping dual narrative, Lorri and Taryn Benson take turns chronicling their unique perceptions of events once Taryn was caught in the act of her first purge. With unflinching frankness, they reveal the deceit, the guilt, the shame, and the manipulations that are inherent in this enigmatic disease, unveiling the true picture of what happens to the family dynamic once an eating disorder takes hold. Much more than a cautionary tale, Distorted illustrates the psychological factors that underline the beginning and spread of the disease, the successful and unsuccessful therapies, and the consequences the disease had on themselves and their family.

Triumphantly, the two women share what was ultimately needed to bring the truth to light, providing guidance for anyone struggling with or affected by an eating disorder. Their two stories--woven together as one powerful beacon of hope--will offer insight and comfort to families, spouses, and loved ones who feel helpless and alone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Was Not Very Helpful
The only thing I got from this book was that ultimately the person with the eating disorder is the person responsible for their own recovery. No matter how much the mother cared and tried to fix the problem, it was up to the daughter to decide to apply what she had learned, but no tips were shared on what she learned or found helpful.I have a son with an eating disorder and was looking for suggestions on what to look for in a treatment program, what works etc.None of this was addressed. It never really explained what made the daughter decide to recover and whattreatment/tips she used to get to the recovery process. They did list some treatment facilities at the back of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Both sides (mother & daughter) are at times painful to hear -
But it is a true, honest glimpse at recovery from an eating disorder. We learn that recovery is not easy, and it does not occur without relapse. We learn that recovery only happens when the person wants it, is ready for it, and will work hard at obtaining it. In this true story we learn that this daughter is the only one responsible for her recovery, her mother (and family) can play a supporting role, but the mom will travel on her journey as her daughter finally recovers from her eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish that I had read this book long ago.
The book that was written by Lorri and Taryn could have been written by my own family. The perfect child in the perfect family, living the perfect life. Accomplishment, performance, and achievement defining the family and its dynamic.Until something went horribly wrong.

Lorri and Taryn accurately captured the horror that is an eating disorder and the depths that it can take a family to.

What I particularly enjoyed about their book was that it captured Lorri's world so very well. Most books on this topic tend to focus on the clinical aspects of the disease.

As another perfectionist mother, I saw in Lorri, what I ultimately learned to see in myself during my daughter's recovery...that my "plans" and my "fixes" would not be the source of my daughter's recovery. That the healing that needed to happen in her heart would ultimately be the source of her strength. And for us, like for their family, a more genuine relationship with one another and our faith, and a great faith-based treatment team helped us walk out of this dark, dark place.

For those of you with daughters on the brink of this horrible disease, I encourage you to read this book, understanding that this is a realistic portrayal of the way that this disease can progress. It is not a horror story. It is honest. If you're not ready to face these facts, you are not ready to help your child get well.

Definitely read this book if you are the mother of a highly gifted daughter who suffers an Eating Disorder.Lorri's journey may save you some time in the recovery process for your own child.

4-0 out of 5 stars Distorted: Great Title, Great Book!
This was a very compelling story of a mothers true love and struggle to help her daughter overcome her eating disorder, and a daughters fight to break free of her disorder. I truly enjoyed reading this story from both of their views.

Taryn grew from a young and insecure girl into a strong focused woman who realized she could beat this disorder. And Lorri's fight to keep her daughter well and her family whole. My heart ached at times for both of them. I found myself not wanting to put this book down. Great reading! ... Read more

Oxford Handbooks offer authoritative and up-to-date reviews of original research in a particular subject area. Specially commissioned chapters from leading figures in the discipline give critical examinations of the progress and direction of debates, as well as a foundation for future research. Oxford Handbooks provide scholars and graduate students with compelling new perspectives upon a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

A rich source of authoritative content that supports reading and study in the field, The Oxford Handbook of Eating Disorders reviews current research and clinical developments through synthetic chapters written by experts from various fields of study and clinical backgrounds. Epidemiologic studies suggest that eating disorders are not only common but have increased in prevalence in recent decades, and this handbook refines and updates the state of research. The book is divided into four sections: phenomenology and epidemiology of the eating disorders, approaches to understanding the disorders, assessment and comorbidities of the disorders, and prevention and treatment. The first section deals with classification and epidemiology of the disorders, considerations for revisions to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and the somewhat neglected topic of eating disorders in childhood and early adolescence. The second section describes research basic to understanding the eating disorders and addresses biological factors, psychosocial risk factors, cultural factors, and the effects of behaviors such as dieting and eating and weight concerns in the genesis of the eating disorders. The third section describes assessment of the eating disorders, medical and psychological comorbidities, and medical management. The final section deals with various treatment modalities that have been found successful, including psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacologic approaches; an overview of evidence-based treatment for the eating disorders; and a consideration of what we know about cost-effectiveness of existing treatments.

The multiple perspectives and breadth of scope offered by The Oxford Handbook of Eating Disorders make it an invaluable resource for clinicians, researchers, and educators, as well as scholars and students. ... Read more

Product Description
Women’s Conflicts About Eating and Sexuality explores the strong relationships food and sex have represented to women over the years. No other book has spelled out so clearly the parallels between sex and eating nor integrated the relationship of these to women’s basic need to be loved.

Today’s dilemma for women--be fat or go hungry--and the endless variations and unsatisfying solutions to this problem have contributed to the incidence of anorexia, bulimia, and obesity. The pursuit of slimness, the obsession with having the perfect body, excessive aerobicizing, and diet books ad nauseam are all part of this phenomenon. Authors in Women’s Conflicts About Eating and Sexuality skillfully discuss the parallel between women’s obsession with sex and romance in the fifties and their obsession with food today. An important book for all women, it sheds light on the complex issues facing women and devotes special attention to the career woman and the additional pressures to be slim and stay slim.

The woman who reads this potentially life-changing book can examine, question, and change her behavior, using the specific step-by-step program aid included in the book. This book is for every woman who has ever worried about being too fat or too sexual. Women’s Conflicts About Eating and Sexuality will appeal to women of all ages--young women and their mothers will be fascinated by the parallels between sexual obsessions of thirty years ago and the eating obsessions of today.

This healing book will particularly attract single career women for whom sex and relationships are fraught with complications. Counselors and therapists will find this book an excellent resource in their work with helping women. It is also a good auxiliary text for courses in Women’s Studies focusing on psychology and history of women and the sociology of women and eating disorders. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't really apply to me
I didn't really relate to this book.I do eat emotionally, but this book didn't have alot of helpful advice for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Altering!
This book is absolutely mind blowing! Every few pages I would have to just stop reading and take a few moments to collect myself. It was like Dr. Gould wrote the majority of this book with my personal story in mind. "You eat because you're torn between the self you've always been and the self you have an inkling you could become if you'd take a risk." My life in a nutshell. It was revelation after revelation.

Now, I'm a fast reader, but it took me almost 2 weeks to conquer this book, simply because it is so deep. I will be quite honest when I say that it made me quite uncomfortable at times, simply because it was so blunt and so on point. Everything Dr. Gould said makes sense. I can see how I have been using food as a way to sabotage myself and to try and suppress latent emotions. This is a HEAVY book. If you are not ready to clean those proverbial skeletons out of the closet, then you're not ready to read this book. But if you are prepared to take a long, hard, and open-minded look at your past, and silence your inner critic for good, I believe this book can make the difference. Align yourself mentally, and the physical aspect will "fall into place". It's been 6 weeks since I completed the book and I'm more confident and less dependent on food then ever before. This book has been liberating!

5-0 out of 5 stars Your search is over, this is the book you're looking for
If you've read your share of "diet books" and still haven't found the answer it's because you're looking in the wrong kind of book. This book IS the solution you're looking for. There is not a single recipe mentioned in the book.Instead this book goes to the deep rooted source of the problem and it's my guess that most every other book fails to address this. It's not easy to hear what this guy says but you know he's right.

A good analogy is that of someone who doesn't understand gravity and they lead their lives thinking that heavier things fall faster than lighter things (not true). Then one day someone teaches you about gravity and how it applies equally to all things and your understanding is forever changed.Same is true with this book. When you gain the knowledge and insight from this book you'll never go back to the way you were thinking. You'll understand why shame based, or boot camp type dieting programs fail in the long run because they don't address the root causesRead this book slowly and absorb it all. This book is incredible!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hits the Nail of the Head
I struggled for years with overweight and emotional eating. This book was my "eye opener" and probably saved my life.Dr. Gould addresses every angle of emotional eating and gets to the heart of the matter so that when you begin to understand the "why" of what you are doing, you are better able to take control of it.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who struggles with food for comfort. It's the best self-help book out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars He gets it.
Having struggled with this issue for more than 30 years, it's been incredible to read this book because it in so many ways it feels like he's writing from inside my head....analyzing my feelings and the ways I torment myself.I've no idea how many different books and programs and plans I've tried in an attempt to figure out a solution to this.Short term success occasionally, but always, always in the end whatever it was failed. This works, for me at least. And in reading the book it seems like Dr. Gould's has met a lot of people who are struggling with the very same thing I've struggled with alone and ashamed and feeling like a freak for so long.He gets it.His methods are firmly grounded in years of clinical research....he's not a quack trying to get rich quick on another diet scheme aimed at taking advantage of people who, like me, are desperate to find a way to end the struggle and deal with food like a normal person does.Good luck.I hope this is the answer for you as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Real and Caring Analysis and Potential Solution
This book is excellent. It's probably a classic or "the" classic (I don't know it's not my field).I read it many years ago, probably just after it was published, and I still remember most of its lessons.Anyone interested in "weight studies" should buy and read this book.

Reading a recent article on women's neurology I was astounded that the writers/scientists never once mentioned psychotherapy and the role of emotions and early childhood experiences in their literature analysis. It was as if anorexia and bulimia were genetic diseases, existing outside of culture.I know it's very hard to treat anorexia (bulimia is easier) but it is possible and Bruch outlines how to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars unique insight
Studies today revolve around body image and ignore the emotions and thoght processes vital to understanding eating disorders. Bruch brilliantly describes what it is to suffer from these wayward thought processes, andoffers an incredibly insightful and intimate look into the world of ananorexic. Excellent for those who are suffers and for those trying tounderstand. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ABizarre, Horrible Book
Were they kidding? This kid developed anorexia because HER MOM WORKED?Well, she should slit her throat if she HAD A JOB.This book was difficult to get into.I felt that this kid was really spoiled if her mother was making her breakfast at the age of seventeen. Her mother seemed to do alot for her family and this child did not appear to be grateful for it at all. This book was undeveloped, and the reasons for the problem were not fully explored or explained.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOTHING TO DO WITH ANOREXIA FOR MORE THAN HALF OF THE BOOK!!
I'm a recovering anorexic who assumed this book would help me relate to the mother and daughter in this book. It was non discriptive, including not even telling how low Tara's weight got, her weeks in treatment, and didn't say how much she lost. They never said she got sick looking or anything related. The rest of the book was complete garbage about how she is doing at home and at school. O yeah, her mother is so naive to even pay attention to how her health was going. " Tara looks kindof blank and sad", says her mother. WELL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT IF YOU'RE A PSCHYATRIST AND HELP HER!!! don't waste you're time and money on this book. it's just not worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars True story, Real insight. Good Theories.
I thought this mother/daughter story was very accurate and sincere. How wonderful that they kept such a telling record of thier struggles for others to read. Many other reviewers have said that this is too "easy, boring, and worhtless", I think those may be the readers who are reading eating disorder books to feed thier own eating issues...like "Wasted", which many have called a handbook for how to have an eating disorder. I think this story is not as graphic as some, but it is a true account of a mother and daughter and thier struggles with a deadly disease. Also, the commentary by Dr. Craig Johnson was very interesting to read. He is very well known in this field, and he covers many issues in a very easy-to-understand way in this book.
Remember, not all eating disorder books are going to be as graphic as books such as "Wasted", but then again, not all eating disorders are that graphic either.

2-0 out of 5 stars Superficial and simple
Without trivializing the sufferings of the Rio family, I honestly feel like this book offers no insight to the complexity of anorexia nervosa.Tara's eating disorder - which was not anorexia at all, but bulimorexia - was a relatively short ordeal, and she did not hide it from her family like many sick young women do (or like the excerpt from the back of the book would have the prospective reader believe she did).Introspection is nihil - rarely expressed is sentiment deeper than "I feel fat".Moreover, the overall tone is self-centered, as the authors never speculate upon the epidemic nature of the disease; I call this sort of self-congratulatory, non-academic memoir "victimization literature."For these reasons and more, I cannot recommend this title as a quality account of an eating disorder.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Insightful-A Raw Look at Real Life
I found this book to be refreshingly real and raw. Beyond the scope of eating disorders it addressed everyday issues I think many teen girls are battling with. As a woman in my mid-twenties, I related to much of Tara's thoughts while also gaining a sense of empathy for the struggles I put my own mother through.

I think every woman will relate to at least some aspect of the Rio's story. As a recovered bulimic, I've read MANY books about eating disorders. However, few have touched me the way this one has. I'm tired of reading books from a clinical point of view. This one read like a soap opera and kept my interest to the very end. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is for the practitioner who is curious about how to incorporate therapy that draws on clients' spirituality or religious background as a resource for recovery from eating disorders. There is growing empirical evidence that spiritual approaches to treating clients with eating disorders are as effective, and sometimes more effective, than secular ones, particularly with religiously devout clients. In this book, the authors seek to be catalysts in building up the body of literature documenting the influence of client religiousness and spirituality on the development and maintenance of eating disorders, as well as recovery from eating disorders. Drawing on their many years of clinical experience, the authors show how a theistic perspective of healing and change can enrich therapies currently in practice for eating disorders, such as individual, group, and family therapy and twelve-step programs. They propose an agenda for future research including valuable information on measures and research designs that will help investigators study the etiology of eating disorders as well as treatment outcomes, as they relate to client involvement in institutional and community religious life and clients' private devotion or expressions of spirituality. ...
