Product Description
The Overcoming Eating Disorders, Second Edition program addresses the cognitive-behavioral treatment of Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. CBT has been proven the most effective treatment for helping patients improve their eating habits and overcome their disorder.

The treatment described is divided into three overlapping phases: behavior change, identifying binge triggers, and relapse prevention. The main focus of the program is the normalization of eating. Patients use self-monitoring forms to track their eating habits on a daily basis while they work toward establishing a pattern of 3 meals and 2 snacks per day eaten at regular intervals. Once a regular pattern of eating has been established, patients move on to recognizing and eliminating their triggers for binging and purging. CBT techniques like problem-solving and cognitive restructuring help patients deal with negative mood states, faulty interpersonal interactions, and errors in thinking. The final phase of treatment consists of a review of the positive changes that have occurred during treatment, as well as a discussion of any residual problems and ways to handle setbacks or lapses. Homework exercises are assigned at each session and play an important role in keeping patients motivated throughout the duration of treatment.

This newly revised and updated Therapist Guide includes expanded information regarding weight and shape concerns and an entirely new chapter on adapting the treatment for use as a time-limited, therapist-assisted self-help program.Complete with step-by-step instructions for delivering the treatment, this guide is an indispensable resource that no clinician can do without.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent presentation of complex topics
As an internist, I am a little closer to the obesity side of things but I found the entire book informative and very easy to comprehend. The chapters are purposefully short to facilitate the episodic reading that is often the only reading possible in a busy practice. I particularly like Dr. Brownell's public health and environmental approach to the problem of obesity. This textbook is a great way for the uninitiated to "catch up" on the current concepts of obesity and eating disorders. ... Read more

Product Description
Who's Crazy Here? is a concise guide for people seeking options to psychiatric drugs. Author Gracelyn Guyol ended her bipolar disorder in 2002 by addressing its underlying causes instead of treating the symptoms forever with drugs. When readers of her first book confessed difficulty "wading through" the length and science in most health books, Gracelyn created this 113 page guide to recovery fromADD/ADHD, Addiction, Eating Disorders, Anxiety, PTSD, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, and Autism.Part I covers remedies for the most frequent causes of mental dysfunction: inadequate brain fuel, nutrient imbalances, disruptive substances, four "genetic quirks," flawed digestion, food allergies/sensitivities, environmental toxins, and emotional trauma. Chapters in Part II focus on a specific diagnosis and its unique causes. Innovative practitioners are introduced who have developed effective, drug-free treatments. Each chapter concludes with bulleted Steps to Recovery to discuss with your holistic practitioner.Since it can be difficult to locate doctors trained to treat mental illness without drugs, Chapter 1 provides key words, web sites, and tips for finding one using the Internet. For readers who want more scientific data and details, DVDs, books, and web sites are recommended throughout.Learn about practitioners using methods developed by the late Abram Hoffer, MD, PhD, who enabled 75% of his schizophrenic patients to live "normal" lives. Discover the clinic that ended Gracelyn's bipolar mania in just four months, which has been helping mental patients for two decades. Most addiction programs achieve long-term abstinence for only 3-10%. The approach Gracelyn recommends that addresses the physical causes of addiction enjoys 60-74% success.Even children with autism, the most complex disorder, frequently recover.Explore how holistic treatments can help you or a loved one restore mental health. ... Who's Crazy Here?
Steps to Recovery Without Drugs
by Gracelyn Guyol,
Ajoite Publishing, Stonington, Connecticut, 2010.
124 pages, ISBN 9780578061764

Recovery from mental illness without drugs? In today's high-stress world, many people experience episodes of anxiety, depression or psychosis. Everybody knows that modern psychiatrists prescribe pills while psychoanalysts prefer talk therapy. Until people develop a mental illness, they don't learn about the complications, the problems and the difficulties that many vulnerable patients experience during episodes, just when they need quality care. The author of this book asks an important question - Who's Crazy Here?

Author Gracelyn Guyol, herself a recovered patient, healed her bipolar disorder in 2002. She remains mentally balanced by taking a daily regimen of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements, avoiding toxins that cause her brain to malfunction and not eating gluten. Her book shares several steps which helped her recover from a serious mental illness.

Part 1 gently outlines Sherlock's Process, a practical approach for identifying mood disruptors, medical conditions and trigger factors. Without analyzing brain chemistry or psychiatry, Guyol politely but firmly encourages readers to consider the causes of their symptoms and find competent health professionals who treat patients safely and effectively.

Part 2 has step-by-step programs for recovering from ADD, addiction, eating disorders, anxiety, autism, depression, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Each chapter suggests steps for recovery, offers helpful advice and lists reference books and web sites with patient-friendly information.

Who's Crazy Here? explains that mental patients are not crazy to hope for recovery. Even if their psychiatrists only prescribe drugs, Gracelyn Guyol encourages patients to use Sherlock's Process to find health professionals who know how to diagnose and treat the root causes of mental illness, without relying on zombifying doses of prescription medications. The author does not overload readers with biochemistry, research reports or medical terms. Gracelyn knows that patients and families have to start with the basics. Her book presents the facts, concisely, clearly and persuasively. The tone is encouraging, supportive and respectful.

The author introduces two little-known psychiatrists, Dr. A. Hoffer and Dr. H. Osmond, who met in the 1950s in Saskatchewan, Canada. With hundreds of psychotic patients to care for and few effective treatments, they teamed up with medical scientists and clinical professionals to research the metabolic causes of schizophrenia and develop restorative treatments. They used healing doses of vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements to complement other treatments. Many of their patients recovered on an orthomolecular program.

Gracelyn Guyol wrote this informative book to help patients, families and caregivers find quality care and recover from a mental illness. Even busy psychiatrists can use this book to understand how a restorative program can complement other treatments. Guyol's book inspires patients to hope, learn and recover, even patients with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia.

Product Description

Caring for a loved one with an eating disorder is a difficult task; carers often find it hard to cope, and this can contribute to the maintenance of the disorder. The Clinician's Guide to Collaborative Caring in Eating Disorders shows how active collaboration between professional and non-professional carers can maximise the quality of life for both the sufferer and all other family members.

The book provides straightforward guidance for clinicians who work with families and carers. It suggests ways of ensuring that interpersonal elements that can maintain eating disorders are minimised and indicates skills and knowledge that can be taught to the carer for both managing their personal reaction to the illness, and for providing a practically and emotionally supportive environment that is conducive to change. The appendices of the book contain a Toolkit for Carers, a series of worksheets designed to help carers recognise their own unique caring styles.

This book is worthwhile reading for all health professionals working with people with eating disorders. It is relevant across a variety of settings and client groups including inpatients, out-patients, community and day patients.

Many people with an eating disorder also suffer from low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Eating disorders such an Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia are maladaptive coping mechanisms, and recovery requires the learning of new, healthy coping skills. In "One Life - Hope, Healing and Inspiration on the Path to Recovery from Eating Disorders", Naomi Feigenbaum shares her personal story of recovery at the Renfrew Center and offers positive coping strategies, including practical advice about how and when to use them. She addresses the importance of self-belief and positive thinking by introducing each chapter with a different healthy recovery tool, such as honesty, writing a journal, and dealing with triggers, motivating the reader not to hold on to their eating disorder, but to follow their dreams and take control of their own recovery now.Encouraging readers that a setback is nothing more than a challenge to be overcome, this inspirational book will help people at all stages of recovery from an eating disorder and their families, and the psychologists and psychotherapists, counselors, social workers and health professionals who work with them do the 'next right thing' and combat the root causes of this dangerous illness. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Honest and enlightening
I really liked this book. I read it for research for a novel I was thinking of writing, but really got into her story just because it was emotional and interesting.

She writes very carefully, because as she mentions in the preface, she's writing this book for both a person's loved ones as well as people suffering from anorexia, and she doesn't want anything in the book to "trigger" eating-disordered behavior (her words) in someone trying to recover.

Yet she is very honest about what she did--her crying fits, how she felt, how she failed to communicate and acted out. I found it insightful and enlightening, and I applaud her for being so honest.

At the beginning of each chapter is a positive coping skill for readers struggling with eating disorders, but I think that the skills would also be very insightful for the family or loved ones of someone with eating disorders to know and be aware of. At times, the chapter following the positive coping skill doesn't really highlight the skill very much, and I could have wished the order of the skills were better matched with the storyline--her storyline, her real-life experiences--to exemplify what she's hoping to convey in any readers struggling with eating disorders.

On a whole, a good book that's not only interesting but with a heart to help others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't judge another until you have walked a mile in their shoes...

Reading this first person account of a 14-year-old girl's journey through recovery from anorexia, I had to do some major revamping of my perceptions of eating disorders and addictions.

Naomi shares a week-by-week account of her stay at Renfrew Center, a residential treatment center for women with eating disorders. She begins each of eleven weeks with a practical skill for recovery along with a "how to" and "when to" use this skill.

The heart of this book is the fact that Naomi shares her innermost thoughts from her journal. Quite a brave and amazing feat for someone dealing with a disease that often holds many secrets, even from the person it plagues. Her courage to be honest provides valuable insights. The realization hits just how much this distorted thinking is resilient to change.

Thanks, Naomi, for a revealing account that will educate and encourage those who deal with eating disorders.

2-0 out of 5 stars I'm happy for her recovery, but...
First off, let me say that I'm very glad that the author is in recovery from a serious illness. Eating disorders are all too often minimized in this culture in their seriousness, and that can make it tougher for people to get the help they need. So it was wonderful to hear of someone who did manage to make it.

Unfortunately, I'm not really impressed by the book itself. While the writing is okay, it's not really of publishable quality as it reads more like a personal journal, and a tedious one at that. Not that this hasn't been exceptionally important to her, but reading someone's day to day stuff isn't always as interesting to others as it is to the writer and her immediate audience. There are ways to tell a daily autobiography that make even the little details interesting, but it's very difficult to do, and this just didn't quite make it.

4-0 out of 5 stars a candid & personal journey
book was interesting to see actual journey of someone with an eating disorder.highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Tale of Struggling with an Eating Disorder
When I had the opportunity to review "One Life: Hope, Healing and Inspiration on the Path to Recovery from Eating Disorders" by Naomi Feigenbaum, I did so with both interest and fear. I am a recovered anorexic myself. It's been nearly twenty years but I can still remember the feelings associated with that period as if it were yesterday. From this vantage point, I was able to fully appreciate the struggle Naomi went through. She has written a powerful book detailing her experience of recovery at an inpatient treatment center. She has done so in a positive way, trying to help those who may follow in her footsteps. As she states, "It is my hope that the description of factors common to all eating disorders, as well as the skills I have learned to deal with them, will help other women gain the hope, courage, and confidence to give up their own eating disorders and to fully recover."

The title of this book "One Life" comes from a statement that one of Naomi's therapists makes, "You only have one life; don't waste it on an eating disorder." Each chapter in the book corresponds to one week of her treatment. Naomi begins each chapter with a skill for recovering anorexics to work on. She lists the skill, how to use this skill, and when to use it. The skills run the gamut from Being Honest to Using Your Voice to Reaching Out to Others and Relinquishing Control. These are useful skills for everyone to have.

Naomi is to be commended for her honesty and willingness to share. A powerful passage comes towards the end of the book when she finally realizes the reason for her eating disorder, "I was afraid of life. I was afraid of confrontation with others and not getting what I needed, so it was easier not to ask. It was difficult to cope in healthy ways and far easier to resort to attention-seeking behaviors and forcing others to take care of me. Life is full of challenges. It was easier to sink into non-existence, comforted by the familiarity of the eating disorder I had known for years."

"One Life" should be required reading for anyone touched by an eating disorder. I would particularly recommend it for parents who have a child struggling with an eating disorder. It provides a valuable window to what is going on in the mind of someone struggling with this. Thank you, Naomi, for writing this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A Step Backwards?
I write this review as a person with what is probably a mild case of BED. I read the popular book on the subject by Christopher Fairburn, Overcoming Binge Eating, and came away from that book with a CBT plan that I felt would work. It made sense and progressed well. I also recognized that that book was written back in 1995 or so and figured that in the years since, advancements had been made.

Unfortunately, I was wrong, and it seems things have regressed. The problem is that this is a true manual. Of the same kin as something that would be used to fix a car engine, except for the crucial and often overlooked fact that people are not car engines. In fact, we are quite a bit more complex than that. I get the feeling that in order to create the CBT problem herein the authors (or whomever designed the program) drew a diagram, where certain "cues" led to certain "behaviors" and then declared "I know! If only we interrupt the cues!" Sounds good in theory, however, in practice I doubt the CBT manual here would provide anyone any good. Indeed, in the larger of two studies that used it, only 17% of people using it as self-help improved (compared with ~10% no-therapy control group). I'm cherry picking, as the other therapist-led groups did better, but I feel the number is telling, especially after reading the therapy itself.

The therapy is not bad, it's just utterly un-insightful. It is this: Any little thing that is determined to be a risk factor or cause of BED (low self-esteem, impulsiveness, etc, etc) has a worksheet. You do 3-4 worksheets a week, and that's it. Cured! One could go through this therapy spending 15 minutes a week reading the handout of the week, 15 minutes a week doing the worksheets of the week, and 5 minutes a day filling out the "self-monitoring worksheet" where one need not even record what they ate, but simply make marks throughout the day for when food was eaten. That's it! No change needs to happen. No assessment of "am I really following this" as there is nothing to follow. In Fairburn's outdated CBT manual one could not progress to the next step until some requirement was satisfied (e.g. eating at regular meal times throughout the day). In this program, eating regularly is a suggestion mentioned perhaps twice, oh, and of course you must fill out the meal planning worksheet, for "at least three days". That oughta do it.

Perhaps this CBT manual is a suggestion, and it's up to the therapist to actually make it good. But I doubt it. And I also want to mention that I am a fan of CBT. I have used it to great effect in the past, for social anxiety. I do not scoff at "changing your thoughts" type of activities, except when they are as unmotivated and un-insightful as they are here. I feel as though the authors have not actually conversed with patients with BED, and have not tried to see things from their perspective and ask them how they might make the therapy better. The only point of view they seem to acknowledge is the numbers that come out of clinical trials.

Being of the scientific persuasion myself, I am sympathetic to this viewpoint. But if it were the only method we allowed ourselves to gain understanding of psychological problems, I doubt this field would ever progress. On the other hand, the book does a good job of citing all it's references and playing devil's advocate to itself by covering all sides of everything.

I see Fairburn has his own more recent clinical manual on Amazon (except he calls it a "guide", a distinction I appreciate), that I may check out next.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent CBT Clinical Curriculum for BED
The book is another step in the clinical march of the CBT camp as it prolifically designs and field-tests problem-specific applications.

The volume introduces the CBT in application to Binge-Eating Disorder (BED) and offers a detailed, ready-to-use clinical curriculum for applying the CBT paradigm to this population. The curriculum is well suited for groups and individuals.

The approach sets primarily behavioral goals (reduce binge-eating behavior) and offers behavioral (relaxation, trigger/cue control, habit modification) strategies as well as cognitive strategies (ranging from classic reframing to emotional self-regulation), as well as elements of exposure/decensitization experiential exercises, coupled with skills training (stress mng, etc.).

The book offers a brief review of other approaches to BED (e.g. offers minimal coverage of DBT, Interpersonal, etc.).The volume summarizes efficacy research and positions CBT as the best empirically supported tx strategy for BED to date.

Well compiled, well designed, well presented, well priced - another CBT power tool (with the added benefit of being generalizable to other compulsive-spectrum clinical presentations).

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic workbook for compulsive eaters and folks with major weight issues
I won't lie to you, I used to be in great shape, but I had some emotionally difficult years and managed to pack on about sixty pounds.Yes, they call it "emotional eating."And here I thought I was just stuffing my face, because I fattened up like a prize heifer at the state fair, and since my "bulking up" stage I've only managed to drop about ten pounds.Recently I've realized that dieting had nothing to do with me being in great shape before I got all husky, so I've been trying to figure out what my real issues are. And whoa, self discovery can be a one way ticket onto the crazy bus, let me tell you. A girl wants to be able to understand why she would sit down and eat two original chicken sandwiches (with cheese) from burger king and then chase that with fries and a whopper jr... but these are tricky tricky questions, people.Sometimes a gal needs a little direction from an outsider I guess.Lo and behold, that's where this workbook comes in!!
This workbook is massively useful, and I have already recommended it to a couple of people I know with compulsive eating issues. If you want to get to the core of your weight issues I suggest purchasing a copy of this book.If you prefer to yo-yo diet and spend time at home alone with Ben and Jerry on the sly, then perhaps this book isn't for you. What Geneen Roth offers in this book are 87 exercises that will help you rethink who you are, what you are all about, and why you feel the need to keep yourself stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey. And don't worry, these are writing exercises so you can stay plopped in a chair the whole time.
I'm not even halfway through the book, and I am experiencing major life changes. This book WILL help you deal with issues that you might not want to deal with. You know, the kinds of issues that you try to avoid dealing with by overeating.
My only other advice to those considering the purchase of this book is that since it is mostly a workbook you might want to consider pairing it up with another one of Roth's books.I liked "When You Eat At The Refrigerator, Pull Up A Chair." I happen to be completing the workbook while reading "Half-Assed A Weight Loss Memoir" by Jennette Fulda. The combination is pretty satisfying for me. If you are a younger person, or are very crafty and creative, I would also recommend "Our Lady Of Weight Loss" and "All Is Forgiven Move On" by Janice Taylor.
As you may have noticed, I have been doing a lot of "weight loss self help reading" in the last couple of weeks. ... Read more

Product Description
Enduring Change in Eating Disorders provides a unique perspective on the successful treatment of eating disorders, which are among the most debilitating and recalcitrant psychiatric diseases. For therapists, this book will broaden an avenue of exploration in the treatment of their patients; for eating disorder sufferers and their families it will give hope and understanding that will empower them as they work with a therapist. The text draws on cases from the author's practice of over twenty-five years and follow his approach in the theoretical tradition of Intensive Structural Family Therapy (IST). Cases of eating disorders in youths and adults are provided as well as instances of bulimia, anorexia, and compulsive overeating. Three appendices provide the reader with information regarding the scientific basis of the IST model, the effectiveness of the approach in treating conditions other thank eating disorders and preventing eating disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Enduring Change in Eating Disorders" - an Enduring Resource
"Enduring Change in Eating Disorders" is a humbling book. In Chapter 2 it poses a question: "Can Eating Disorders be Treated?."The rest of the book is the answer: yes, eating disorders can be treatedBut the lack of the exclamation signs after this "yes" indicates the highly nuanced treatment process that is needed to tackle this recalcitrant spectrum of presentations, in order to achieve enduring, long-term results.

The book, in essence, is a guidebook in Intensive Structural Therapy for primarily anorexia and bulimia. The book offers a wealth of clinical narrative, with multiple session transcripts. The sheer amount of case material adds up to a kind of vicarious clinical practicum in working with the eating disorders population.

The book has many strengths: ample case studies, follow-up data, useful appendix (see "lunch session protocol"), and an important cautionary attitude exemplified by such statements as "I include the lunch session with some temerity. It is to be used by clinicians who have expertise in working with families..." (p. 266).It is this kind of responsible clinical writing that helps the clinical reader not overstep his or her boundaries of expertise. This is the "humbling" aspect of the book that I have referred to in the beginning of my review - a kind of reality check, a skill-set inventory, if you wish, for a clinician who seeks continued education.Salvador Minuchin, in the preface for the book, says it best: "This is the book of a clinician who believes in his craft. We can see him observing, reflecting, worrying, doubting, pushing, rejoycing. He is the image of the kind of commitment that is necessary to succeed with some of the most difficult and resistant patients who come to us for help" (p. xiii).

In sum, the book reads as a kind of personal account from a battle-hardened, battle-wisened clinician reporting on the lessons of his clinical career.I definately recommend it!

Product Description
Normal Eating® is a uniquely effective step-by-step program to free people from compulsive urges and emotional eating. It's not a quick fix, but it's a real fix. You not only lose weight, you become a true normal eater. Many people who've failed to solve their eating problems in the past finally succeed with Normal Eating®.

The Normal Eating® method draws from the Zen principle of mindfulness, 12-step wisdom on addiction, intuitive eating (the non-diet approach), cognitive psychology, and solid nutrition. Author Sheryl Canter analyzed the natural recovery process and broke it into stages, with each stage building on the last. The result is a gentle, step-by-step guide that greatly improves the odds of success.

The book lays out the program in detail. An accompanying online support group lets you ask questions of the author, and apply the ideas to your own life. Visit NormalEating.com to join the support group, read the blog, or sign up for the free newsletter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful on so many levels
This review comes from a reader who is grateful for this book, not from someone who likes to share her opinion on every book she reads. The four stages of Normal Eating provide relief, support, and solutions throughout your journey to Normal Eating. I read the book all the way through and now return to different sections as the topic calls to me. It just keeps on giving.

I strongly recommend the associated website too. I am so happy to have found NE and the internet community which, led by Sheryl Canter, could not be more caring, compassionate, and truly helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Something works-finally!!
I, like many other women in America, have struggled with my weight and eating for years. I have tried many, many different methods. Normal eating is the first one that makes 100% sense to me. I haven't believed in diets for a long time, but I couldn't quite put the whole puzzle together. My sister had the book, and I read it. I decided to join the forum (really inexpensive for lifetime membership) and started working the program. Sheryl maintains that there are a few extra steps to her method vs. some others (including the one another reviewer says she is a rip-off from). That is correct- there is something missing from these other methods that helped me to become an ever-more rotund but self-accepting person. I am grateful for the self-acceptance, but happy to go a step further to deal with the issues that will allow me to become my normal weight, and -most importantly- never obsess about eating again. I will update as I continue with the program. If you are considering Normal Eating, just go look at Sheryl's website.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes so Much Sense
Like many people I've got a huge collection of diet books, special cook books, and all kinds of self help books that are all aimed at me getting my body slimmed down. And all the ideas and diets all work...for awhile.I've often asked myself why is this so hard?I KNOW what I should eat.I KNOW what I shouldn't eat!I know the "RULES" for every diet from A to Z...so what is the problem?

I think Sheryl Canter's book is helping me answer the question of what is the problem. It's getting in touch with my emotions and learning to eat for the purpose of what eating is for:To fuel my body, provide it with the nutrition it needs. Not eating to fill emotional voids!

I have read through the book once and now am working my way through the book with written work. Just reading through it and knowing to be AWARE of what I am eating is a big help.Knowing that I can eat ANYTHING if I really want it takes the stress off of me so much that I am very relaxed now about food. I don't eat just because other family members are eating. That is important with teen aged children and a husband who works all kinds of crazy hours.Just because they need their main meal at a certain time don't mean I have to eat.

I think this book may hold the key to helping many loose weight and keep it off.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This was a really great book.I have seen a lot of diet books, but I think that this one makes so much common sense.I have not tried it yet, but cannot wait to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent,do-able approach
I've read 25+ self-help books on overeating/bingeing/emotional eating, and this book is by far the most practical one I've read! I have had issues with food most of my life, been in & out of Overeaters Anonymous, read every G.Roth book, been in therapy, and I FINALLY have some real hope of eating normally. S.Canter writes in a no-nonsense, practical style, and gives the reader simple tools to help to become a normal eater. Simple, but not easy, as dealing with food/easy is not easy for us who've struggled for awhile can attest. I joined the Normal Eating online group, and so far that in itself has been a big help. I've learned a lot about my eating from Geneen Roth's books, but could never get any practical& use-able poinst or suggestions from them. I felt stuck. Until I read this book. I'm fairly new to it, but if I listen to my body, it actually "tells" me if I'm hungry & what I'm hungry for...amazing! I never thought, after years of abusing my body with food, that this could happen! I still have a long way to go to be anywhere near a normal eater, but I finally have real hope! ... Read more

Product Description
Starving for Affection-a journey of eating disorders, drugs, and sex is based on a true story. Using a first-person narrative, it covers the period from a young girl's adolescence to her early twenties. It is a vivid retelling of how she dealt with being a fat girl in a society that celebrated thinness. Bulimia and amphetamines were her solution for over 15 years. They are graphically described and include the causes and effects of the twin addictions. Her secret has cost her years of her life. Her personal story is a cautionary tale for girls who will do anything to fit in, to be accepted, to be included in today's world of slender bodies ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nearly unreadable, poorly edited
This book is so riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, it is nearly unreadable. The book jumps from place to place at times and goes on to repeat things we learned earlier in the book, as though we will have forgotten such mundane things such as the fact that the author bought her clothing at Wal-Mart or that she thought of disgusting mental images to make herself vomit.Additionally, the idiotic fat jokes are over the top and stupid. Not once, as a normally-sized person, have I ever thought that we should purge the earth of fat people, nor have I ever mumbled under my breath at someone overweight.

This book is far-reaching and poorly edited. The story would be workable if it were in a better format and reviewed/edited by someone who actually did these things for a living...and did them well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Starving for Affection
Starving for Affection is the best story of self-discovery I have ever read. The realistic journey through addiction and self-destruction is one that most women can relate to in some form or another. The author captures the true essence of how powerful these on-going struggles. The view into this painful world of corrosive disorders is enlightening to all who lack the empathy and understanding of society's pressures.
I found myself riveted, unable to put the book down.I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially those searching to comprehend the unrealistic demands on females of all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for
Starving for Affection was intense but very readable. It details a young woman's horrific battle with a number of addictions; our society does not make it easy to overcome such problems. My heart went out to the protagonist of this first-person account . . .

This was the caption for the photo I took when I read the book. I would like to add a comment or two.I am neither a size two nor grossly obese. As a retired high school teacher, however, I was made aware of the students whose lives were severely affected by their various disorders and society's attitudes towards both them and their addictive behaviors. I believe the information in this book would beuseful and informative to anyone who suffers from addictive disorders, or deals with said at a professional level, and highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great
Was in great condition and was a great price and shipped early and arrived quickly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good and Bad
I learned about the non-diet approach from Jane Hirshmann and Carol Munter's book, Overcoming Overeating (or OO). What I love about OO is that they understand how important self acceptance and size acceptance are to REALLY letting go of emotional eating. As long as there is a voice within saying, I'm only good enough if I'm thin enough, the world is an unsafe place to live. And those of us who use food to soothe anxiety, will turn to food to soothe that unsafe feeling.

Geneen's books always seem to hold that other viewpoint - that thin is better. It's often veiled our couched in terms of acceptance (which, to me, makes it a little creepy). If you want to learn about your compulsion to eat to soothe your feelings, then stick with Overcoming Overeating, or the sequel, When Women Stop Hating their Bodies.

4-0 out of 5 stars reveals dearth of serious feminist theorizing about EDs
This collection of twenty-two essays by therapists, professors, researchers, and philosophers explores the sociocultural phenomenon of eating disorders from a feminist perspective, working through questions of theory and application with an eye toward cultivating a better-informed approach to the epidemic. The book begins with some historical framing, includes a section on the issues that mere fact of having a body raise for patient and therapist, deals with questions of textuality and discourse, and calls for a feminist model of treatment and recovery as well as a redefined research agenda for the entire field. Two important essays, Marcia Germaine Hutchinson's "Imagining Ourselves Whole: A Feminist Approach to Treating Body Image Disorders" and Deborah L. Tolman and Elizabeth Debold's "Conflicts of Body and Image: Female Adolescents, Desire, and the No-Body Body," unsettle the position of woman within speech and society by using the compound "body-image" to show how woman stands as both speaking, acting subject (body) and passive gazed-at object or picture (image).

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-explicated series of works on a ubiquitous problem
The authors delve into some of the least-examined aspects of eating disorders with grace and insight. This is the book that the eating disorder literature has needed: one that incorporates a feminist perspective, involves cultural considerations, and combines theory with research for adynamic text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Powerful Read

Hopefully, the views in this book can generate discussion that will lead tochange. ... Read more

Ira Sacker is an expert in eating disorders. With 35 years experience as an eating disorders specialist, he understands the issue, and has likely dealt with every possible manifestation of it. From the title, I anticipated this would be a self-help book. It's not. It is really intended for other therapists and practitioners, and provides solid information on causes, and some options for treatment. He defines the root causes of anxiety, fear and identity issues that are life controlling for these individuals, and describes a way to break through to help.
