Not what I anticipated.
Having a family member with Marfan syndrome, I felt that the book did not cover this disease. There was a lot of general type information regarding different issues that could, or could not be associated with joint hypermobility. I am a person who has done a lot of medical research of my own, and I did not find anything new in this book. It is certainly NOT what is was built up to be on the amazon book site. (Another reason, that I choose not to purchase books anymore from your site. I find it to be a better choice in going to a local bookstore and being able to thumb through a book, therefore appraising it's contents.) Hype, does not do it for me.

A much needed book!
Dr. Tinkle's book Issues and Management of Joint Hypermobility is considered THE book to have concerning hypermobility.I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, hypermobility type (formally type 3).The book is only 144 pages and I read it in one sitting.It is very informative about a subject that it is almost impossible to find information on.Dr. Tinkle goes through 37 chapters giving basic and vital information about each chapter heading.Some of the chapters are: Use of Medication for Pain, Jaw and Dental Issues, Joint Laxity, Coping, Skin, and Wrist/Hand.This is a great reference book to keep on hand for people with hypermobility problems, those that take care of them, and those who know someone with it.It is definitely a book I'll reread over and over and refer to often.Thanks Dr. Tinkle.

Essential book for anyone with a hypermobility diagnosis or EDS-HM
Dr. Brad Tinkle thoroughly explores the problems associated with the hypermobility syndrome / Ehlers-Danlos Hypermobility Type (EDS-HM).It is a relief to realize that it is not just me... others have the same endless list of medical problems that may seem unconnected, but are related and explained by EDS-HM.For example, I have restless leg syndrome, heart burn, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, fatigue, and chronic debilitating pain... all of those symptoms are detailed in this useful guide to understanding and dealing with this difficult and life changing diagnosis.I just needed Dr. Brad Tinkle to connect the dots for me.

Dr. Brad Tinkle had done a tremendous service for the health care community and the families and friends of those diagnosed or not yet formally diagnosed folks with Hypermobility Syndrome or EDS-HM.I say this because having been recently diagnosed with this myself -- it took many many hours of internet research schemes to illicit the information I needed to make sense of my life with EDS-HM.I was in pain and very distressed at the seeming ignorance of many fine top notch physicians and ancillary care givers into this particular disease state.I received such joy and clarity in reading the very 'easy to read' text chapters detailing out the impact of EDS-HM on the human being....it truly does impact every seeming system of the body ~ and varies widely from individual to individual.Even in that variation btw. peoples, and the variation from day to day of symptoms in sufferers ~ there is in this book the most frequently encountered experiences of 'many'.An individual can see the gold thread of EDS-HM throughout their lives -- thanks to the very thorough material presented in logical sequence.From the viewpoint of the EDS-HM experience in the very young person to the experience longitudinally of someone approaching advanced age.....the information is solid, compassionate and a breath of fresh air.This largely 'invisible' illness that can cause such disability in life -- was only made more painful by the lack of understanding that seems widespread among physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, physicians, naturopaths etc.True there is no cure....but I found myself less capable of "managing" till I knew what exactly it was that needed 'managing' ~~ To view yourself as healthy but with odd and disabling pain -- often body wide -- and all work-ups turning up 'negative' you can feel as if you are losing your sanity.Well rest assured you are not.EDS-HM as described in Dr. Brad Tinkles book is clearly a disorder that can have patients seeking answers to their pain & symptoms in many different health care disciplines.The tragedy being in how often this disorder is missed or overlooked in diagnosis.You will want to give this book to everyone in your family, to your close friends, to your PT, your OT, your personal trainer, and every one of the doctors that treat you.It is concise, clear, logical -- and truly any good physician will be greatful to read the information in these pages.I for one am very grateful to Dr. Brad Tinkle for writing this book -- and look forward to any continuing publishing he does as regards EDS-HM.The United States is blessed to have him working here.

Dr Tinkle's Hypermobility Handbook 2010
This is a great book on understanding EDS and hypermobility syndrome in further detail. The book is easy to understand and the chapters are short.

He's done it again!Hooray!
Wow ~ what can you say about Dr. Brad Tinkle that hasn't already been said here.Well I'll share a bit.I purchased his first book right in the middle of a terribly frightening time in my life ~ experiencing the new onset of significant pain in nearly every joint in my body in my 5th decade of life...postoperatively.Post-operatively in a new way - two artificial knees - and in an old way - 3 year oldhips.Burning my way through that book ~ had the light go on in a huge, huge way ... & I began my quest for diagnosis of some type of connective tissue disorder.

The diagnosis of Hypermobility Syndrome was forth-coming & Dr. Tinkle's book shed so much light I actually would fall asleep at night with the book right by my side as I would read & reread to learn.Through the book I began to gain in small steps some appropriate medical care.Granted I drove everywhere to get it ~ and even endured the age-old, "get counseling ~ it can help fatigue" - while trying to ignore side-long glances.Yet I persevered because I KNEW Dr. Brad KNEW what he was talking about.He was my light at the end of the tunnel.I gave the book to my doctors and happily some took it most willingly (they chuckled and thanked me for not highlighting it all up with, "see? that's me!" "see again? this is me!" - as I admitted I was tempted to do! Next I discovered this newest book was published & I bought two copies....one for myself....and the other for 'who knows who' as I am relocating and need to begin again the process of building my team of clinicians to aide me in dealing with Hypermobility Syndrome.

I wondered how in the world any book could improve on the first.. I no longer wonder!This book again spells out in decided detail all of the reassurance you the reader seek ~ to be validated by a highly esteemed professional - Dr. Tinkle - in your experience as an EDS-HM or Hypermobility Syndrome patient.The book goes in depth to a greater degree with some of the pertinent clinical findings a clinician (or even patient) can find on exam and in diagnostic testing and patient history. It then discusses further some possible road maps for the patient/caregiver/doctor team to navigate for better outcomes in dealing with the varied difficult (albeit common) issues such as chronic pain & disability. Additionally the book traverses the reality of symptoms as they impact all the various age groups in life with EDS-HM/Hypermobility Syndrome. It becomes easy to see how early diagnosis can directly impact lives for the better -- maintaining wellness to the greatest extent possible armed with knowledge - is so much better than having four artificial joints beginning in your forties in utter ignorance.

Another service that is not to be minimized is Dr. Tinkle's expressed opinion on Hypermobility Syndrome being of the same animal perhaps as EDS-HM.Too often Hypermobility Syndrome or the dreaded 'Benign Joint Hypermobility Syndrome' diagnosis is met with random disbelief, accusation, or frank, "So What".It's never comfortable to be dismissed ~ most especially when in pain and striving to attain the help and treatment you deserve to live your best possible life.Only in sharing the beginning words of "I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome....." would any medical practitioner begin to pay attention ~ sifting through what they read or recalled back in college or medical school.This was good news as I then would launch into my notion of having a 'variant' of it perhaps - Hypermobility Syndrome and offer Dr. Tinkle's book to them for further reading & expert knowledge.

I began my process of achieving better wellness on the foundation of what Dr. Tinkle has made available to everyone in the writing of this newest book and his first. I simply and humbly wish to thank him for pioneering in this fashion...I cringe to think where I'd be today if it weren't for this helpful writing and encourage you to read either one, or better - both.For anyone who may have EDS-HM or Hypermobility Syndrome and feel you need a 'voice' as you self-advocate ~ I sense Dr. Tinkle is truly present for you and with you through these pages.

excellent book
Finally a book that helps the few docs who are willing to treat the medically complex person, and tell them what to do. I would love to see another book that addresses the very complex of ehlers with the different forms of dysauotonmia, and the ehlers person who has cranial instability. As we in the population know there is a subset that have all 3 and even more, and most docs have NO experience with the combination. Thanks Linda Simmons

Beyond Helpful!
As a teenager recently diagnosed with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome, I have found Dr. Tinkle's books very helpful and understandable. This book in particular has proven to be a vital guide for everyday life with JHS. Instead of running in to my primary doctor right away, I can now look in the handbook and check if my symptoms are related to JHS. When I actually went in to be seen by my doctor this week with severe rib pain and shortness of breath, we were able to figure out what was wrong quickly because I brought the book along. The independence and assurance that having this book can bring to JHS patients on a daily basis is absolutely priceless, along with the convenient clarity of having explanations to everyday problems at their fingertips.

The definitive book on Ehlers Danlos
Dr Tinkle is a rare gem in the CTD world. Those of us with a Connective Tissue Disorder know how difficult it is to find a physician who in truly informed and engaged in up to date, appropriate treatment for these conditions. Dr Tinkle is amazingly available to his patients and truly cares about each individual he sees.
In this book, basically a revised & expanded version of his first book, Dr Tinkle explains the head to toe issues experienced by an Ehlers Danlos patient. This condition, so unknown to most, is debilitating, excrutiatingly painful, and very difficult to treat. Dr Tinkle makes the complexities of EDS much more understandable for those of us without a medical degree.
This book in an EXCELLENT resource for the newly diagnosed, or veteran EDSer who just wants to learn more. However, its most valuable use by far is as a learning tool for the Family Doctor who finds themselves treating an EDS patient. So few General Practitioners know anything about EDS beyond "Hypermobile, with stretchy skin" that EDS patients find themselves frustrated and unable to get proper pain management and care. I highly recommend that all EDS patients carry a copy of this to their GP and urge them to read it.

Ehlers Danlos Syndrome
This is avery good book that gives information for finding all kinds of sources that have information about EDS.It is more of an information resource locator than a text book.

This book is a waste of money
I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), so I purchased this book as soon as it came out.What a waste of money!It's chock full of factual errors, outdated data, and incorrect references.

In one section the book states that there are 10 types of EDS.In another place, it refers to the 6 types of EDS.In truth, it was believed that there were 10 types, but the Nosology in 1997 reclassified the EDS types, reducing the total to 6.

The book provides resources for EDS with incorrect websites and mailing addresses.Even these references are not consistent within the book.In one place the address is right and in another it uses an address that hasn't been used in a decade.No attempt was made by the authors to check their sources for accuracy.

There is a glossary of medical terms in the book, but this is the same glossary that appears every other "The Official Patient's Sourcebook".The terms included have no relationship to EDS at all.

Much of the book includes a listing of websites and instructions on how to do research online.If you know how to use a search engine, you don't need the book to find these sites.If you don't use the Internet, the book won't help.

In my opinion, the authors made one master sourcebook, then copied it for every disease and disorder known to man.Little effort was made to modify the books beyond the name of the condition.No matter what ails you, they figure they can get your money at least once. ... Read more

Excerpt: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) (also known as "Cutis hyperelastica") is a group of inherited connective tissue disorders, caused by a defect in the synthesis of collagen (a protein in connective tissue). The collagen in connective tissue helps tissues to resist deformation (decreases its elasticity). In the skin, muscles, ligaments, blood vessels, and visceral organs collagen plays a very significant role and with increased elasticity, secondary to abnormal collagen, pathology results. Depending on the individual mutation, the severity of the syndrome can vary from mild to life-threatening. There is no cure, and treatment is supportive, including close monitoring of the digestive, excretory and particularly the cardiovascular systems. Corrective surgery may help with some of the problems that may develop in certain types of EDS, although the condition means that extra caution is advised and special practices observed. The syndrome is named after two doctors, Edvard Ehlers of Denmark, and Henri-Alexandre Danlos of France, who identified it at the turn of the 20th century. In the past, there were more than 10 recognized types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. In 1997, researchers proposed a simpler classification that reduced the number of major types to six and gave them descriptive names. These six major types are listed here. Not easy to use
This CD consists of information from various government health- related websites, as well as articles, abstracts, and links to internet sites.However, since the websites are presented in their entiretly the majority of the information has nothing to do with EDS. Although the disk is searchable, the effect is much like cruising the web, you have to go through a lot or irrelevant information to get to a few nuggets of useful information.Most of the useful information I had already located through browser searches or links from EDS websites.I would not recommend this as a good value for the money. ...
