Good review
This book "Live, Learn, and Be Happy With Epilepsy" is a good reminder of some simple, yet effective methods of coping with epilepsy. It obviously isn't a cure, but a helpful guide in giving some overlooked strategies in dealing with some of the non-physical aspects of the disease such as stress, anxiety, etc. This book is a good tool in the toolbox in dealing with epilepsy.

Great Information
This book has ben a life saver for my mother who has epilepsy. There are really good recommendations for every day control of the disorder and how to live a happier life. The book is easy to read and has a wealth of information you won't find anywhere else. Kudos to the author.

Poorly written, potentially dangerous
The author of "How to Get Wealthy Writing Informational Books for the Internet", also the author of this book, should be stopped. The information presented was only minimally specfic for epilepsy and included recommendations for relaxation, self-improvement, diet, exercise, etc. that one suspects will come out from the same author for a multitude of other diagnoses. One of the first recommendations for relaxation was to take a warm bath. Most neurologists warn against taking a bath alone because of the risk of drowning if a seizure occurs. The many grammar and spelling mistakes leads me to believe no editors or spellcheckers ever got near this manuscript. There are many books on the topic that are better than this one. ... Read more

A wonderful book for people with Epilepsy
About seven years ago, I was operated of a benign, very large brain tumor, a Meningioma.That was a life changing event, and it changed me completely from the way I used to be in every aspect of my life. Fortunately, even with some limitations, in time I was able to go back to my normal life and my work activity.

Just over 20 months ago, on my way to work, I was t-boned by a driver who was too impatient at a traffic light waiting to change. He hit me just before the door, and the impact sent my car to a ditch. The car was totaled, but with the impact, I re-injured the part of my brain where I was operated a few years back.That caused me a stroke, with the end result of an instant paralysis of the right side of my body and the lost of my speech.With time and therapy I recovered my speech and my mobility, but not my coordination.

About 3 months after my accident, I started having frequent Grad Mal seizures, which until recently happened on average once every 4 weeks. I have tried several drugs, some of them with little impact, but with awful side effects.

When it was determined that the "drug-only" solution was not working, I received a VNS.I had high hopes, but I also experienced some additional problems, with an impact with my quality of life.

I hope that the VNS alternative will work, but I am already discussing with my neurologist and neurosurgeon about the possibility of another brain surgery, if my quality of life keep getting worse.

Leanne Chilton in her book captures quite well that "something" that cannot be described when we have to go through so many unexpected things, and w have to overcome so many obstacles.When she talks about the fact that she was home-bound at times, it hit home.When she talked about the operation that she had before she got better, she talks quite clear about all her concerns, and all the pains she had to endure.If I decide to go for the next surgery, I know it will be a difficult one, but I will be better prepared.

I did not expect to get a tutorial or a technical book in "Seizure Free", and I am glad I did not get that.She was a fighter during her battles with leukemia, and she is a remarkable woman.Wonderful Book.

I purchased this book to read with my son who does not have epilepsy. It is very well written to explain what epilepsy is and how someone feels if they have it. Both my son and I loved the book. Missing Michael is a wonderful and compelling book.As gripping as their parents' love for their son is the unyielding love and support from Michael's big sister Meaghan.Families will be faced with challenging times and can learn from this Family that has truly persevered.This is an excellent work from author Mary Lou Connolly and should be shared with those you care for.

Facing Uncertainties
As a parent and psychiatrist treating people with physical disabilities, I found this book a gripping and compelling account of the trials and tribulations of the Connolly family. I was impressed by the author's candid description of how she dealt with frustration, helplessness, and powerlessness of the life-and-death uncertainties of her son's seizure condition. I applaud her self-disclosure in the service of helping others who face similar challenges, and I recommend this book highly to any parent dealing with their child's illness.

You are never alone...the village is always there
Last night, I sat down and read Missing Michael. The book did not leave my hands until I read the last page. For those that were a part of the Mary Lou and Michael's village, this book is a testament that it takes a lot of people to be a safety net for those that we love and respect.I applaud Mary Lou, Michael,Meaghan and Barry for not shutting out the village. For allowing those near and afar to help when and where needed. For taking the chance to allow others see the vulnerablity, yet the dignity that Micheal possessed (even when He did not always realize it). For me, the best part of the book shares that there are people within our village that do understand and care outnumber by far those that don't.This sharing is a primer to those who are friends, family, co-workers, andcare professionals of those with Seizure Disorders. If your child has a seizure, you MUST have this book!!!
I can't begin to describe the grief and fear and utter isolation I felt when my daughter had her second seizure.I remembered that knowledge is power, and I needed to feel powerful.This book gave that to me and so much more!Suddenly terms made sense and I wasn't alone anymore.The section on family coping is amazing: it's as though the authors have reached inside your mind and put down every emotion you've gone through and some that are yet to come.There are case examples throughout that are uplifting, and yes, sometimes a little frightening, but very helpful to read and very enlightening. Most importantly, the book is positive throughout without minimizing what you're dealing with.My only complaint(and this goes for all books, websites, etc) is the use of percentages to illustrate how uncommon different seizure types are, or how many kids outgrow, etc.We already know our kids beat the odds, we don't need to be reminded, and frankly those numbers that in the beginning were a comfort, now are depressing.Again, if a child in your family has seizures, YOU MUST HAVE THIS BOOK!!!

A great comfort
When my 13 year old son had his first seizure, I completely freaked out.When he had a second seizure, I completely lost it and became full of anxiety, fear, and anger.But after reading this book, I found great comfort knowing that all the emotions I had were "normal".The book is also easy to understand, and covers a lot of information which has helped me to become more informed regarding seizures and epilepsy.

Great for when your trying and expecting
I was really impressed with this book.There are a lot of questions when you are wanting to have a baby and you have epilepsy and this is the best book I've found.It gives you information in layman's terms which I found fantastic.It doesn't scare you from having a baby and gives you great stories from other people's experiences.I would recommend and pass on this book to anyone I knew that was trying to have a family in my condition.GET IT!!

I waited some eight months to obtain a copy of this book -- eight months of my first pregnancy.It wasn't worth the wait.There is so little substantive information in this book tailored to pregnant women with epilepsy that I could have written the book myself.For example, except for the single statement that women should check with their doctors about whether their anti-epilepsy drugs are contraindicated, the chapter on breastfeeding features only general information on how to breastfeed an infant and offers nothing specifically about the breastfeeding problems of women with epilepsy.The chapter entitled "After Delivery" provides safety tips such as "Store medications in childproof containers" and "Use guards on stoves and cookers."For this we need a guide for women with epilepsy?Specific information for women with epilepsy throughout the rest of the book is largely common sense as well and offered in most pregnancy or epilepsy books.This is a complete waste of money. ... Good Book for the Non-Neurologist
I bought this book thinking I was getting a textbook on pediatric neurology. It is a paperback of less than 200 pages. In spite of its brevity, it is loaded with information, much in tabular form.

For someone with a broader understanding of epilepsy it could be an adequate ready reference in the clinic.

The authors point out ongoing controversies regarding treatment and give reasonable recommendations. A good example is on page 100 where they describe the "kindling" phenomenon and cast doubt on the concept if the patient has had less than 10 seizures.

There is much solid science to be found in the tables. A good example is the chapter on drug treatment of epilepsy. The information table on each drug has a section that lists possible mechanisms of action. This allows the physician to chose based on target of action rather than just seizure type. The text is backed up with 225 references, some as recent as 2003.

I recommend this book for the non-neurologist physician that wants a concise reference that does not take up too much shelf space.

Milton and Jung's book is geared to the epileptologist, mathematical modelers, EEG personnel, the research scientist, and the neural engineer.This is not easily digested and understood.You have to read the book in sections to obtain the greatest insights.The book is better on theory and the physics of synchronization processes.The end of the book discusses the chance for a electrical defibrillator.We are presently at a very preliminary stage of development even though a vagal nerve stimulator has been found effective in certain refractory cases of uncontrolled seizures.This book firmly places Epilepsy as a dynamic illness with chaotic, often unpredictable characteristics and sets in motion ideas for a cortical integrated defibrillatory device.Let's hope we innovate and obtain one soon for clinical trials. ...
