I bought this book for my daughter who got a beautiful and sweet Border Collie mix from the Shelter. After about 6 months the dog had what appeared to be a seizure and continued to have them every 4 - 6 months. The book was informative and helped relieve a lot of her anxieties and gave her direction in what to do during and after a seizure. The book is helpful and provides natural pet care.It is not a complete work on the medical condition and lacks a great deal in providing all the medical solutions for this disorder. The book was promptly shipped in excellent condition.

Product Description
Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders, with a prevalence of 4-10/1000 and an incidence of 50-70/100,000 per year. It is often life-long, can appear at any age, and includes a diverse group of neurological disorders, which present considerable challenges in diagnosis and management. Therefore, it is a condition that will frequently be seen by GPs and by a wide range of specialist physicians, such as neurologists, psychiatrists, neurosurgeons, paediatricians, geriatricians, as well as allied health professionals, such as a nurses (in particular epilepsy specialist nurses), EEG technicians, neuropsychologists, and researchers with an interest in epilepsy. The diversity of epilepsy syndromes makes it difficult to achieve an adequate level of knowledge and expertise in their management.

Epilepsy is a comprehensive handbook which guides the reader through all aspects of epilepsy, both practical and academic, covering all aspects of diagnosis and management of the patient with epilepsy in a clear, concise, and practical fashion. The book appeals to a wide audience by teaching a simple but highly practical method to approaching the classification and diagnosis of epilepsy, and then provides patient-centered information on pharmacological and non-pharmacological management. ... Product Description

Epilepsy has afflicted humankind throughout recorded history; yet, it is only in the last half-century, that significant progress has been made in our basic understanding of the epileptic brain. Pivotal advances in drug development and surgical techniques, as well as the emergence of innovative approaches such as electrical stimulation of the nervous system, have led to a substantial reduction in the morbidity and mortality of patients with epilepsy. At the same time, remarkable developments in neuroscience have enhanced our understanding of brain structure and function.

Epilepsy: Mechanisms, Models, and Translational Perspectives incorporates new translational advances that bring epilepsy therapies from the laboratory bench to the bedside and back again. It brings together the work of more than 70 of the field’s most respected and cutting-edge researchers and clinicians. In 24 chapters, this extraordinarily comprehensive and current work—

  • Offers an overview of the basic anatomic and functional substrates of seizure genesis and considers novel pathogenic concepts that have both emerged and been validated experimentally
  • Examines antiepileptic drug therapy, including the latest on molecular targets
  • Looks at the state of surgical treatments for epilepsy and discusses advances in the fields of structural and functional neuroimaging
  • Reviews the variety of nontraditional therapeutic options, such as the ketogenic diet, the vagus nerve stimulator, immunomodulators, neurosteroids, herbs, and botanicals
  • Investigates neuroendocrine, hormonal, and biobehavioral factors that influence seizure susceptibility—information that can be incorporated into the design of treatment algorithms on an individualized basis
  • Provides a glimpse of what future epilepsy therapies might look like, from novel mechanisms of drug delivery to gene and stem-cell therapies for epilepsy to seizure detection methods, to the ultimate goal of disease prevention.

The idea for this book was inspired by the editors’ collective desire to promote bridging of the so-called translational divide—that is, covering innovative treatment strategies based on scientific principles that have yet to be tested rigorously in the clinical setting, but yet may provide practitioners with new and promising approaches toward epilepsy therapeutics.

While this book does give good info on what it is like to have a seizure, it does not deal with any of the feelings of the people having seizures. It is told too matter-of-factly. Also, if you don't have auras, you will be annoyed by all the people who do have them complaining. However, it is a good reference.

A benchmark synthesis of the current state of the science and clinical practice of the ketogenic diet. On the basic science side, the authors review what is known about the basic biochemical mechanisms of action of the KD at the molecular level, spelling out in detail its complex interactions with nutrient components, neurodevelopment, brain biochemistry, and physiology. They also examine the effects of the KD on the metabolism of fats, amino acids, and carbohydrates in the central nervous system at both the macro and cellular levels. On the clinical side, physicians, dietitians, and nurses provide a full range of information concerning the treatment of seizures with KD, including a detailed assessment of the indications for, and the contraindications and/or complications that arise from, its use, detailed equations that permit the caregiver to calculate the actual amounts of different types of foods that can be included in daily diet plans, and documented information on the carbohydrate and calorie content of hundreds of commonly used drugs. ... Get The Facts About Epilepsy So You Can Take Back Control Of Your Life

Discover How To Recapture Your Quality Of Life After A Diagnosis Of Epilepsy

Are you ready to take charge of your life? Discover important facts about epilepsy including tips on living with epilepsy and epilepsy diagnosis and treatment information.

Do you or someone you know suffer from epilepsy? A diagnosis of epilepsy can be frightening, but with the right information and knowledge, you can go on to live a high quality life and control epilepsy using several important tips and insights.

Each year over 3 million Americans suffer from epilepsy and seizures associated with epilepsy.

According to the CDC and NIH, Doctors Will Diagnose More Than 200,000 New Cases Of Epilepsy Each Year…

Epilepsy is a serious medical condition that affects roughly ten percent of the people living in America. Roughly 3 percent of all people will go on to develop epilepsy during the course of their lifetime.

Do you know if you are at risk for epilepsy?

Peer-reviewed studies suggest that record numbers of epilepsy cases are diagnosed each year at alarming rates. The incidence and prevalence of epilepsy and seizures associated with epilepsy are climbing.

What can you do about it?

Protect yourself from unexpected epilepsy seizures by learning as much as you can about this disease and your treatment choices.

Here are some important facts about epilepsy that you should know:

* Almost 300,000 people will experience their very first epileptic convulsion or seizure each year…

* Of these people, roughly 120,000 epilepsy seizures occur in children younger than 18 years old.

* Children under the age of 5 are just as at risk for seizures associated with febrile convulsions or epilepsy as adults are, yet many parents do not realize this or know what to do if their child experiences a seizure…

* Epilepsy targets people between the ages of 2 and 65+… so virtually no age group is safe from this devastating condition…

Do You Know If You Are At Risk For Epilepsy?

People most at risk for epilepsy include:

* Stroke patients, who are 20 percent more likely to develop epilepsy with time…

* Minority populations, as epilepsy is a condition more likely to affect minorities than non-minority populations…

* People treated with various medications including some anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medications, which doctors commonly prescribe without warning patients of the dangers of serious side effects including convulsions and seizures…

* Are you at risk?

Find Out Now. Even if you don’t fall into one of these categories, you are at risk for epilepsy. For example, roughly 33 percent of all people will have a single epileptic seizure with no identifiable cause during the course of their lifetime. That means billions of people may experience a convulsion at some point in their lives.

Epileptic seizures and convulsions can be frightening if you don’t know what is happening or lack support to help you through difficult times.

Contrary to popular thought, most people with epilepsy can live a good quality of life…

Just because you have epilepsy doesn’t mean you don’t have a good chance for survival. In fact, up to 70 percent of people with epilepsy can enter remission with proper treatment and early diagnosis of their condition.

These same people go on to live a high quality life, and you can too.

Some studies suggest up to 75 percent of people that use seizure medications for up to 5 years can withdraw from their medication and remain symptom free.

You can spend a lifetime trying to sort fact from fiction about epilepsy, or you can take advantage of all the hard work and effort I’ve put into creating a unique guide that will teach you everything you need to know about epilepsy and related convulsions or seizures.

After much time and effort, I’ve created a simple guide that will help you learn everything you need to know to combat epilepsy… ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars INSPIRING.....UNBELIEVEABLE.....HUMBLE....TRUTHFUL
THERE IS SO MUCH INFORMATION ON THE HISTORY OF EPILEPSY AND ALL OF IT HAS RELIABLE RESOURCES. BEING AN EPILEPTIC MYSELF, IT IS GREAT TO KNOW ABOUT MY DISEASE or DISORDER.....AND HOW FAR BACK IN HISTORY IT GOES. THE PRINT OF THE BOOK IS VERY SMALL -- A BIG DRAWBACK FOR ME -- HOWEVER, I AM READING IT SLOWLY. EPILEPSY RECEIVES ONLY $0.34 FOR RESEARCH COMPARED TO $1.34 FOR PARKINSON'S DISEASE! I FIRMLY BELIEVE THERE IS STILL PREJUDICE AGAINST PEOPLE WHO HAVE EPILEPSY. I STRONGLY SUGGEST THIS BOOK IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN THE HISTORY OF EPILEPSY.

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessary account, a necessity for action
I've had epilepsy now for over 45 years. It caused, despite high qualifications, loss of marriage, career and home.
It isn't the duty of a medical researcher to effect social change. He provides fact, not superstition. It's for the activist to do just this: agitate, endlessly, for change.Use this work as source material for the cause, not as a substitute for action of your own.
Ask: why is this subject so rarely mentioned? Is it shameful, embarrassing? Why should it, any more than migraine? There's only one response: agitate, day by day.I did, and do, just that here in the UK.I had a deliberately ambiguous badge made, and wear it still in the open: Fit for Life with Epilepsy. This is 'in your face' agitation. It's necessary. How else do you counteract millennia of stupidity and prejudice?Only one person, signicantly, has complained about the badge: the representative of a major epilepsy charity! The complaint was rejected, three times.I still wear the badge.I'm part of society, reject us as it will, and I want society to see so.I'm here, whether they like it or not.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Timid Author With a Powerful Story
From the viewpoint of the disability activist, the only major work on the history of epilepsy should be a civil rights book about the mistreatment of a minority group since ancient times. Dr Temkin will only admit that people with epilepsy have always been "objects of horror and disgust". Beyond that point his book is 2500 years of intellectual history, too much of it elaborate details of long discredited theories. Yet the author's research is so outstanding and his bibliography of 1120 books and articles so complete that anything less than a 5 star rating would be improper. Dr Temkin deserves special credit for uncovering Richard Caton's 1875 article "The Electric Discharges of the Brain". In 2001 the Medieval Madness Syndrome continues of people with epilepsy being rejected by family, friends, and employers because they have a "deliberately chosen illness". Our timid author declines to ask how this could be true 126 years after the actual cause of epilepsy was discovered. But his research demands an answer to that question. ... Read more
