Product Description
First published over two decades ago as the only multiauthored, comprehensive textbook in the field, the Fifth Edition of this tremendously successful volume expands its focus on the neurosciences to encompass the great strides we've made and their integration into clinical practice. To convey this intensified focus and to acknowledge the recognition by the American Neuropsychiatric Association and the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties of new subspecialty status in neuropsychiatry and behavioral neurology, the editors have added Behavioral Neurosciences to the title. New and expanded chapters cover topics such as the cellular and molecular biology of the neuron, the epidemiology and genetics of neuropsychiatric disorders, neuropsychiatric aspects of delirium, and clinical and functional neuroimaging. In compiling this informative and enjoyable compendium, the editors have crafted each chapter as a complete stand-alone entity, so that clinicians can easily apply the content to the day-to-day challenges of their practices. With a remarkable 82 contributors, 29 of whom are new to this Edition all recognized experts this comprehensive text is clinically relevant and eminently practical for medical students and residents, psychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and neuropsychologists, and a broad range of professionals who work in many different clinical settings (e.g., the general hospital setting, physical medicine/rehabilitation hospitals, psychiatric institutes, community mental health centers, alcohol and chemical dependency programs, and outpatient services and doctors' offices). The accompanying CD in PowerPoint presentation format contains a wealth of material to enhance classroom presentation, study, and clinical use. It includes all 170 tables and all 250 figures, many in color, with their explanatory legends, easy to access and organized chapter by chapter with context provided plus, Highlights for the Clinician summarizing the key clinical points for each chapter; locator menus; useful links; and a topic outline. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars I skipped this one
Tried to read in library several times, but can't force myself to swallow the boring pages. When written in succint and clarifying style, neuropsychiatry does not have that much to write to build this big a volume. If you have to write more, you have to put in a lot of he said she said trivia, and lose the intriguing story line. I just don't see this book is useful to any body - either clinicians or researchers.

2-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
Another behemoth product of the APA publishing empire. I have not read Dr. Silver's TBI chapter alluded to by the above reviewer so cannot comment on it. I presume it is a good read since he edits an entire book devoted to the subject, another APP spawn. My biggest criticisms of this book are 1. the price, 2. theutter unevenness. With respect to the latter, what I mean is, who is this book meant for? For example, the neuroimaging chapter by Hurley and Taber is fair. Here, the illustrations are invaluable. The explanation of MRI is quite weak and any thoughtful discussion of different imaging approaches used experimentally is absent. It is essentially written at the level of an interested medical student or junior resident, not a subspecialist who frequents the neuropsychiatry/behavioral neurology literature. The chapter on alcohol is simply abysmal -- pages and pages on glutamate receptors in animals and nary a word to help the clinician. Korsakoff, Wernicke anyone? Wikipedia gives a better outline of the clinical effects of EtOH on the brain. Who is this chapter meant for? As a clinician I do not care about animal work on glutamate receptors and as a scientist, should I care to, I will find a review article on the subject. Herein lies the crux of the problem: This book satisfies neither the clinician nor the scientist. The former should see Moore's excellent, succinct, well-organized text, or a classic like Lishman (not the 09 edition which has not yet been reviewed to my knowledge and has major changes with respect to authorship) or Pinkus. For a more advanced text, see Mesulam. If you want an overview of the basic science in neuropsychiatry, see Kandel and Schwartz. See Trimble's book on the anatomy of neuropsychiatry.

I do not mean to be overly harsh but this is a pricey book and I do not think its price is justified. Was it simply tweaked for new edition?? Hurley and Taber's chapter looks remarkably similar to the previous edition.

In summary, this book is a disappointment. One can see that the editors have a large number of publishing project so perhaps this undertaking did not receive the attention that it deserved. It is definitely not suitable for clinical or experimental work. I would like a refund.

5-0 out of 5 stars ambitious undertaking par excellence
StuartYudofsky,M.D.and Robert Hales,M.D.'s ambitious project of bringing the exciting and dramatically evolving disciplines of biologic psychiatry and behavioral neurology has been rendered magnificently both in breadth and depth in the assiduously crafted and edited fifth edition of the APP Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences. The textbook has been thoughtfully edited and produced so that clinicians from various disciplines can locate source material pertaining either to broad neurobehavioral disorders or to more specific behavioral-psychiatric symptoms. Whereas many textbooks that ambitiously attempt to cover both the neuroscience as well as clinical aspects of neurological disorders are uneven in there coverage and clarity, Yudofsky and Hales have done a masterful job of giving an in depth though succinct neuroscience background that informs the clinical and therapeutic discussions making this textbook the single most authoritative and clinically comprehensive text dealing with the behavioral neuroscience.
I am a neurological consultant at a traumatic brain injury unit and on receiving my copy( the text, figures and diagrams being first rate!)I carefully read Jonathan Silver, et.al chapter on the Neuropsychiatric Aspects of Traumatic Brain Injury which in addition to being superbly written gave a wealth of practical approaches and recommendations which were of value both to patients and their families as well as members of the multidisciplinary team. Those involved in teaching will find Harel, and Tranel's Functional Neuroanatomy: Neuropsychological Correlates of Cortical and Subcortical Damage and Ovsiew's Bedside Neuropsychiatry: Eliciting the Clinical Phenomena of Neuropsychiatric Illness having done the hard work of sifting through the voluminous literature to present a remarkably succinct and thorough discussion. With the APP making all figures and diagrams expertly rendered in CD-ROM format you are ready for lift off in giving well informed presentations
Without reservation I would recommend this textbook to anyone interested in getting a bird's eye view of the exciting developments and their clinical application in the behavioral neurosciences. It is must reading for those interested in training and certification in neuropsychiatry/behavioral neurology. For a one reach resource it is the best buy (actually in light of its extensive and cutting edge coverage a bargain)for consulting neurologist, psychiatrist, neuropsychologist, cognitive- behavioral therapist. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars the FM book you need..the rest don't compare
I was diagnosed in 2001 with FM and since purchased various books on how to help me manage it..most were a total waste of money...this one is worth every penny!

Last year after dealing with a doctor that didn't belive in FM and just wanted to ship me off to the psych ward because she didn't want to help me deal with my pain and lack of restorative sleep..which was clear every time I saw her as she always referred to treating my "mood" problem...you try to be cheerful when your in a lot of pain, stressed out, and can't seem to ever feel rested, then add people who think your just there to get drugs.
In trying to change providers I found a small practice where a Nurse Practioner and an RN helped to treat just patients suffering from FM.The first visit(and everyone since then) was very pleasant. They had a copy of this book "Taking Charge of Fibromyalgia" in their waiting room...come to find that co-author Julie Kelly was the RN at this practice, so for the first time in a long time I feel like I have someone that truely understands my condition and can help me unlike 90% of doctors I've seen over the years (most don't belive in the condition and refuse to actually do any reading on it).I still have flare ups but now I have the tools I need to get myself through them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...
This book is extremely helpful for anybody living with the pain and frustration of Fibromyalgia.I was fortunate enough to have been able to go through the Fibromyalgia Clinic run by Julie Kelly several years ago.Now I can use this book to learn more about or refresh what I already know about this awful condition that so often debilitates me completely. You would be wise to get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
Fantastic book - explains a lot. It was written by two people who have FMS and work in healthcare. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about this condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative BUT Depressing
Taking Charge of Fibromyalgia: Everything You Need to Know to Manage Fibromyalgia, Fifth Edition is a well written book and very informative, although there are places which could be slightly less technical and more for the everyday reader.I found myself checking a few medical terms on the internet to be sure I understood what it was trying to explain.

I particularly enjoyed the information provided concerning supplements and nutrition.I am very interested in working with my health care professional while complementing medical treatments/advice with doing what I can holistically/nutritionally to alleviate symptoms and problems.

I will say the section concerning dealing with your family about your condition borders on the ridiculous and seems to be better advice for patients with either a terminal disease or something degenerative and totally disabling. While fibromyalgia is not curable and it has times when it flares and you feel miserable, it is not completely debilitating and I don't know of anyone who has died from fibro.I know a bunch of people whom the disease has impacted their lives in some manner requiring some adjustment during a flare period but these book sounds like it is helping you prepare you family for constant vegetative state coma care.

Plus if I used some of the recommended things to tell my husband - he would hurt himself laughing. He knows I hurt - some days more than others. He knows I tire more easily during a flare. But I just can't see telling him it is ok to grieve the loss of a healthy me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Book I Have Read Yet
You can really understand this book! I have 3 other books on this illness. I would have given it 5 stars if I didn't have this "fibro-fog" so may understanding is not at my best. ... Read more

The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

Oncologist Hirshaut and surgeon Pressman form a specializedteam of renowned authority on the treatment of breast cancer. Theirbook--a winner of The American Medical Writers Association's RoseKushner Award--serves as "an additional expert by your side,"providing a backstage look at the essence of breast cancer. Writtenfor women diagnosed with breast cancer or concerned about thepossibility of developing it, the guide is separated into fourinformative yet nonthreatening sections: "From Suspicion toDiagnosis," "Treatment," "After the Treatment," and "Life AfterCancer."

The authors clarify terminology and treatment jargonthat's often lost on the layperson. For instance, fibroadenomas aredescribed as "an orderly growth of cells, confined to the breast, thatresults in benign, movable, and rounded lumps." The TNM system ofstaging is clarified as this: "the conditions Tumor, lymph Nodes andMetastasis are taken into account to determine the stage at which thecancer has been found; staging is a vital tool in measuring risk andchoosing treatment."

Descriptions and illustrations help explainpresurgical procedures, again providing an insider's knowledge intowhat to expect beyond what is usually provided by a regularphysician. Additionally, in a chapter dedicated solely to prevention, the doctors explore factors that may be related to the disease's onsetsuch as heredity, race, diet, vitamins and minerals, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, radiation exposure and other environmental causes,as well as hormones, birth control pills, and hormone replacementtherapy.

The guide concludes with a NABCO (National Alliance ofBreast Cancer Organizations) resource list including numerous officesand phone numbers in each state. Want to know more about breast cancerdiagnosis and treatment? This guide may very well serve as the nextbest thing to an on-call physician, providing clear explanations toquestions--whether general or specific--via a detailed index and 17well-organized chapters. --Cate Bick ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book to guide patients, families through treatment
Betty Rollin's quote on the cover of this book sums it up: "Here are the facts -- clear, unterrifying, and important."I purchased this book for myself and my mother when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.I wanted us both to be able to read about her disease and learn more about what was going to happen to her without being frightened by statistics and other people's case histories. We have both benefitted from this book because it has helped us to understand the whirlwind of activity that followed her diagnosis. The book is not a comprehensive medical reference; there are other books that do a better job of going into detail (like Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book). But as a readable "guidebook" or handbook to help patients and their families understand the steps involved in the treatment of breast cancer, this book is a very good investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars The help you need when you need it most!

Product Description
As the importance of medical entomology increases, access to up-to-date, authoritative information also becomes increasingly important. Over 12 years, the award-winning, bestselling Physician's Guide to Arthropods of Medical Importance has established itself as a standard reference in doctors' offices and emergency rooms, and the fifth edition is no exception. Each edition has become a bestseller in its own right and the fourth edition received highly commended in the 2003 British Medical Association book competition. Designed to help clinicians identify various arthropods and to trace the signs and symptoms of vector-borne diseases to their sources, the text also details currently recommended forms of treatment.

The volume begins by describing the pathologic conditions caused by arthropods and the principles of treating those conditions. It elucidates the rationale behind the various treatment regimes and the underlying principles of controlling the immune response. It covers identification of arthropods and common signs and symptoms of vector-borne disease. The book then provides an alphabetical arrangement of arthropods of medical importance with clearly marked subheadings for easy information access.

The chapters have been updated with the latest information and current references. Older photographs and line drawings have been replaced with new and improved versions. More importantly, a CD-ROM has been developed to accompany the new edition. The interactive CD contains helpful identification aids, additional reading materials, and more color photos.

3-0 out of 5 stars An okay choice.
The way it's set up, plain and packed text; and bw pics, it becomes kind of a dry read but the scientific content is fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars No color, and lacking references in text
No color. This means that histology slides are in gray scale (for example, figure 1, page 10).Therefore, you might want to get a histology atlas as well; this is inconvenient, but perhaps this book may be cheaper than the alternatives at the time of purchase.

Some schematics (e.g. Fig 3, p26) are hard to read because the contrast is low (alpha1 and alpha2 on MHC I).Low contrast issues seem to permeate the entire book (e.g. p337, 327, 303, 290, 216, 171, 160).This means that even if you are color-blind, this book would still present issues.

In addition, the book has too few gray scales. This is apparent when one looks at the patterns that are used to make up for lack of the right shade. They detract from the figures, e.g. p203 Western blot, p99.

The lack of nice figures may be a sign that the author wanted to preserve the original figures from the original journal articles that were influential (as some of the figures are from the 1970s).Or maybe the author didn't have time and had to bring together figures from a lecture powerpoint file.

Another issue: references. The figures are referenced, but the text is not.At the end of each chapter, there is about a page of references, but I don't see where exactly they fit into the text. Therefore, if you want to dig deeper into the evidence, you will be spending a lot of time on Pubmed (or another immunology text).

If I were a patient with an auto-immune disease, I would prefer that my doctor had used a better text. This book is also not for serious students of immunology, since the figures are difficult to appreciate and the text lacks references.Perhaps I have been spoiled by another immunology text that was a tad more colorful.

If you are taking the author's class, then maybe you can borrow this from the library and use another immunology text.If you really need the A then you should buy the book and bring it to office hours every time you have questions.Just avoid questions that are less than flattering of the figures.

If you are a grad student in the author's lab, then you should buy the text and leave it prominently lying about.Write your name prominently on the side of the book, so that your prof knows that it is YOURS (and not that of your fellow lab-mate).Refer to it (and its references) frequently in lab meetings.

It's obvious that the authors spent a lot of time making this book, and I hope that the next edition is better. If colors are too expensive, then maybe a website with color figures might be useful. If this has already been implemented, then this fact should be repeated prominently in the book.

In addition, the authors can improve the figures by using students. You can criticize your grad student's figures on his or her Powerpoint slides, make graduation contingent on good pictures, and then "borrow" those pictures.Make sure you insist on the original figures.Don't try to improve them yourself, for obvious reasons.Give a "summer internship" to a high school student or an undergrad with proven skills in Photoshop.

I think that this book would be okay for an undergraduate "pre-med" immunology class if the general student population is not rich enough to spend money on color texts.I hope to see an improvement in this book, so that it can effectively compete with currently more popular medical immunology texts.I wish the authors the best of luck.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dense, thourough, and very well done
Admittedly, this is a time-consuming and sometimes difficult book to wade through during a semester long microbiology-immunology course in medical school (the target audience of this book). Also, there is no microbiology here, just immunology. That being said, it is an excellent immunology text and reference and leaves very few stones unturned. As one reviewer said many of the paragraphs are dense but I found very few to be unnecessary or uninformative. If you have the time, this is a very good Immunology text. My only complaint is that there are too few figures and the figures that are there are fairly rudimentary (I guess I've just gotten used to all the high-gloss stuff that almost every other medical text uses now...)

1-0 out of 5 stars Just say no
This book presents material in an unorganized and extremely difficult to understand manner. As a first time student of Microbiology you will need to supplement to this text. The paragraphs are dense. The charts are not helpful and there is failure to clarify many terms. The only redeeming quality of this book is some of the graphics. ... Read more
