5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic publication for all, especially for parents!
A very informative and well-written book describing colds, flu, sinusitis, pneumonia and other common winter ailments. Dr. Schachter tells you what's happening with the ailment, how to treat it, and best of all, how to prevent it for the future.

We find this book helpful in our household as parents of young children (and we've had plenty of colds in our house) and recommend it to other parents.

The practical advice (and the clearly defined science behind it) makes The Good Doctor's Guide a very worthhile read for you and your health. A great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a very readable book that gives you the information your doctor often does not take the time to tell you.The Good Doctor's Guide to Colds and Flu is smart, practical and well researched. Not only does Dr.Schachter explain how to prevent and treat colds, he explains the science behind his advice.I also really liked the way he combined natural and traditional remedies.Excellent job!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and comprehensive
This book was very helpful. It was a good guide to what I can do to help myself when I get a cold or the flu and included ways to protect against contracting it (which I wasn't aware of until I had read it).

I picked up 3 copies for my brothers and sister because they have kids and I think this book can help them understand how to keep their households healthy.

And because of the great timing, I was able to stay healthier this cold and flu season!

5-0 out of 5 stars The good doctor's guide to Colds and Flu
Few books written by health professionals can bridge the gap between providing comprehensive advice and information on a health issue and doing so in an interesting, readable and practically applicable manner.Dr. Schachter has achieved this and more. This book is "colds and Flu" for Dummies without treating the reader as one. There is a ton of good, common sense advice for cold and flu prevention through modifying activities of daily living. In addition, he informs the reader about the powerful alternative and nutritional approaches to maintaining everyday health that are available to everyone. This is a book I am happy to have in my reference library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book but beware of zinc nasal spray
I am not really ready to review this book quite yet having just read through it quickly and at this moment, being sick with a cold. But I thought it was urgent to say one thing and then return to edit this review later:

In the chapter called "Treatment" the author recommends (among other things) Zinc nasal spray, using it every two hours. Well I purchased Zicam yesterday for the first time and it seemed to really help... But then I read up about it and learned that there are several lawsuits claiming it caused people to permanently lose their sense of smell and taste after just one use. I believe those people (their stories were very compelling), and will never use a Zinc nasal spray (or gel) again. The reports are not limited only to Zicam, by the way.

To learn more, try looking up the following article from The Los Angeles Times online: "Zinc for colds losing its luster Users of some products reporting loss of smell, taste" By Jane E. Allen Tuesday, March 30, 2004...or"Federal Lawsuit Refocuses Attention on Serious Risks Posed by Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel" dated December 21, 2005...or just do a general search.

To be continued when I'm feeling better.

June 16, 2009:

I just wanted to update the following article from today's Bloomberg report - see how long this has been going on before anything is done to protect anyone?

Zicam Cold Remedy Gets FDA Warning; Matrixx Dives (Update1)

By Shannon Pettypiece

June 16 (Bloomberg) -- Zicam nasal sprays and swabs may cause permanent loss of smell and taste and consumers should stop using them, U.S. regulators warned today, sending shares of manufacturer Matrixx Initiatives Inc. down the most ever.

Matrixx, based in Scottsdale, Arizona, fell $10.68, or 56 percent, to $8.56 before Nasdaq Stock Market trading was halted. That's the biggest intraday decline since its 1996 initial public offering.

The Food and Drug Administration has received more than 130 reports of people losing their sense of smell after using zinc- based Zicam nasal spray and swabs, and Matrixx has an additional 800 reports it hasn't made available to the agency, Deborah M. Autor, director of the FDA's Office of Compliance, said today in a conference call with reporters. The agency sent a warning letter to Matrixx telling the company to stop selling three Zicam products. ... Read more

Product Description
It was the worst epidemic in this country's history, and the search for its cause is still one of science's most urgent quests.

It was 1918, the last year of World War 1. Thousands of men lived in the crowded army training camps that were scattered all across the United States. That spring, a strange flu struck the soldiers at a camp in the Midwest. Healthy young men went to the hospital complaining of sore throats and fevers. Within hours they had suffocated, their skin taking on a terrible purplish hue.

The devastating flu spread like wildfire across the country, infecting soldiers and civilians alike. It killed more than half a million people in a matter of months, then disappeared as suddenly as it had come.

To this day, no one knows what caused a common flu to become so deadly, but scientists are still searching for answers. What they discover could save millions of lives if another common flu virus suddenly turns into a killer. In this riveting account, acclaimed nonfiction author David Getz tells young readers the story of the mysterious flu known as the Purple Death -- the virus responsible for the worst epidemic in American history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
Ok, so I ordered this book because I'm an idiot and didn't read the product description and see that it was actually a children's book. But, that doesn't mean I didn't read it.... I actually loved the book. It's a quick read for an adult, but it's also a great book. The information is accurate and well written. It would be easy for a child that is interested in science or history to understand. So, if you're a middle school science teacher or history teacher this would be a great assignment for a book report.

3-0 out of 5 stars A GOOD OVERVIEW OF THE FLU PANDEMIC
THIS BOOK IS A EXCELLENT HALF HOUR READ OF WHAT HAPPENED IN 1918,IT OPENED UP ALOT OF THOUGHT FOR ME ABOUT THE CAUSE AND CONDITIONS OF THE PANDEMIC. IT IS A GOOD FIRST READ IF YOU KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT THE PANDEMIC

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent children's book about 1918 Flu
I have a copy of this book in my library. It is an accurate and well written book that explains in detail the Pandemic Influenza that gripped our world in 1918-1919.

If you purchase this book for a child, be aware of the nature of the topic presented.Between 20 million and 100 million people perished from the great Spanish Influenza.

Since the book is simple to understand and easy to read, I strongly urge you buy copies for politicians at every level of government.

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope it never ends
This is one of the books I took out of the library yesterday, and I am so glad I did! This book its one of the best medical books geared for children I have ever read! I wish for tw othings, one, it will never end, and two, that there were more books in this series of unknown viruses. Thanks fo r a great read! ... Read more

Product Description

The average individual is far more likely to die in a car accident than from a communicable disease…yet we are still much more fearful of the epidemic. Even at our most level-headed, the thought of an epidemic can inspire terror. As Philip Alcabes persuasively argues in Dread, our anxieties about epidemics are created not so much by the germ or microbe in question—or the actual risks of contagion—but by the unknown, the undesirable, and the misunderstood.

Alcabes examines epidemics through history to show how they reflect the particular social and cultural anxieties of their times. From Typhoid Mary to bioterrorism, as new outbreaks are unleashed or imagined, new fears surface, new enemies are born, and new behaviors emerge. Dread dissects the fascinating story of the imagined epidemic: the one that we think is happening, or might happen; the one that disguises moral judgments and political agendas, the one that ultimately expresses our deepest fears.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written
I have to disagree with the other reviews- this book is poorly written with many run-on sentences that lead to nowhere. He does put in various pieces of historical and scientific data that are interesting, but at the end of most of his sentences, paragraphs, and chapters, I was left wondering what his overall point was beyond simple generalizations.

The interesting part about epidemics to me is society's ability to take half-truths about science and warp them to serve their own purposes. This seemed to be what he was getting at, at times. However, to slight "germ theory" as a main culprit in sensationalizing epidemics is completely off-base. Without germ theory, most of us wouldn't be writing these opinions, we'd be dead. It's how politicians, leaders, the media etc. distort this theory; not a problem with the theory itself.
And to somehow imply that we shouldn't be preaching safe sex because syphilis has peaks and valleys that we don't understand despite no change in sexual activity... really?

This is a really interesting subject and I really wanted to enjoy this book, but overall it was painful to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars History, science, and health issues blend
History, science, and health issues blend in DREAD: HOW FEAR AND FANTASY HAVE FUELED EPIDEMICS FROM THE BLACK DEATH TO AVIAN FLU. Humans have lived in dread of epidemics for all of history - yet today deaths from epidemics are rare in the developed world. The evidences of epidemics in Western society and their lasting effects makes for a key survey any health or social sciences collection, in particular, will relish.

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who wants to know the truth
An easy-to-read, very well written book. At the same time, it has that deepness of thought that makes you feel like you did see the surface of the truth about the 'epidemics', but still can't grasp it all at once. The greatest thing a good book can do is to make you think. That's exactly what this book does: makes you think, makes you want to learn more, makes you search for the answers... A++

4-0 out of 5 stars DREAD
Philip Alcabes is a public scholar.By that I mean a cross-disciplinary professor who reaches beyond the ivy walls to make his ideas accessible to those outside of the academy. Anyone who is familiar with Dr. Alcabes' essays in The American Scholar and The Chronicle of Higher Education knows he routinely questions generally accepted wisdom. Dread is Dr. Alcabes' first book. I approached it the way I approach all his writings, wondering which sacred cows of mine he will slay. As a Jew, I was riveted by his discussion of the plague and the belief that Jews were responsible for the epidemic, perhaps because so many of them were physicians who knew a lot about poisons. As a nutritionist, I was equally interested in Dr. Alcabes' examination of obesity--not the obesity epidemic per se, but of the people whose careers depend on it. Dr Alcabes never fails to disappoint! If you dread having your beliefs challenged, don't read this book. But if you want to learn about the intersections of history, geography, religion, economics, mores and disease, Dread is just what the doctor ordered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant
This book is a must read. Philip Alcabes is an extremely gifted writer. In a worldfilled with potential deadly viruses (Swine Flu just the most recent example....), this book offers brilliant insight into a very relevant topic. ... Read more

Product Description

A Â"brilliantÂ" and Â"fascinatingÂ" investigation of the looming avian flu pandemicÂ--and how we arrived at the brink of a global health catastropheÂ--The New York Times

The virus known as H5N1 is now endemic among poultry and wild bird populations in East Asia. A flu strain of astonishing lethality, it has a talent for transforming itself to foil the human immune systemÂ--and kills two out of every three people it infects. The World Health Organization now warns that avian flu is on the verge of mutating into a super-contagious form that could travel at pandemic velocity, killing up to 100 million people within two years.

In The Monster at Our Door, the first book to sound this alarm, our foremost urban and environmental critic reconstructs the scientific and political history of this viral apocalypse in the making, exposing the central roles played by burgeoning slums, the agribusiness and fast-food industries, and corrupt governments. Mike Davis tracks the avian flu crisis as the virus moves west and the world remains woefully unprepared to contain it. With drug companies unwilling to invest in essential vaccines, severe shortages persist, a scenario Davis compares to the sinking Titanic: there are virtually no lifesaving resources available to the poor, and precious few for the rich, too.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good and short introduction ot the layman
The author provides a good introduction to the history of recent avian flus for the and the dangers they currently pose in simple understandable terms accessable to the layman. This is the real value of the book. On the negative side is that the author is not a medical doctor or PhD level expert in the field and hence cannot bring an in-depth understanding to the discussion (which is quite rudimentary to begin with). This is definitely not a book immunologists would be interested in reading. Other weaknesses include the fact that it was all written using secondary sources primarily newspapers and magazines, sources that are quite weak, especially in the very early stages of flu outbreaks. In addition, many questions are left unanswered. For example, based on recent flus, what would estimated infections and fatality rates be (as percentage of population)? What are most promising directions of research? Hence for an introduction to the topic for the layman the book is not bad (four star rating here) but for those seeking more in-depth analysis it is severly lacking (two star rating for these readers).

4-0 out of 5 stars Needed Book for Class
I ordered this book for a class and it was in perfect condition and at a great price! I would definitely recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Monster at the Door
Awesome book. very well written & informative, well researched. It was recommended to me by an immunologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars A more pessimistic view, but not without its reasons.....
I just finished this book en route from a conference in New Mexico, where I gave a presentation on avian influenza, to my home in Tallahassee.

Mr. Davis' book is superbly footnoted and is an excellent digest of events and publications dealing with "bird flu" over the past nine years. His bashing of the Clinton and Bush (43) administrations aside, his work is a sobering "what if?" that all who deal with pandemic planning should read.

Since the Federal Government has issued pandemic plans covering the Worse Case Scenario, I would suggest two books are essential reading, to get one up to date on things.First, of course, is John M. Barry's superb "The Great Influenza," covering the 1918 pandemic. The other book is this one. After reading this work, you'll never trust Asian flu reporting again.

As a confirming note, a press account today (5/7/06) reported that half the A/H5N1 cases coming out of Asia were reported in a timely enough manner as to be of value in alerting the planet of a human-to-human pandemic. In that context, Mr. Davis' book should be taken even more seriously.

5-0 out of 5 stars very spooky and very good reading
This book is a comprehensive look at just what bird (or avian) flu is all about, and what the world is, or is not, doing about it.

Influenzas are divided into three major categories. Types B & C are relatively mild, leading to the common cold, or, at worst, the winter flu. But Type A is the unpredictable, and lethal, strain that is fully entrenched among the bird population of East Asia. It is very easy for the disease to jump from migratory birds, to ducks, to chickens, to swans and egrets, and back again, mutating along the way. Until now, the human deaths have come from direct contact with infected birds. But the time is coming when that last mutation will click into place, causing it to jump from person to person. A worldwide flu pandemic, with a death toll in the hundreds of millions, is, as one researcher put it, "late."

What is America doing to prepare for the coming pandemic? Not much. Industrial chicken farms, with millions of chickens crowded into one building, are a wonderful breeding ground for diseases of all sorts, not just bird flu. Remember SARS from a couple of years ago? Among the reasons why it was contained is that the cities where it happened, Toronto and Hong Kong, are modern cities with modern health care systems. Imagine if SARS had shown up somewhere in Africa, with a much less modern health care system.

The major drug companies have opposed moves to allow other countries to make cheap copies of flu vaccines, even though there are nowhere near enough doses of vaccines even for first responders, out of concern for their corporate bottom line. The Bush Administration is more interested in spending money preparing for a smallpox or anthrax outbreak, something which has much less chance of ever happening, than in spending it on bird flu, which is coming in the near future.

This is a very spooky book, which I guess is the idea. It is written for the layman, and does a fine job at showing how unprepared America is for the next flu pandemic. It is very highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book takes a look at bird flu, mad cow disease and historical epidemics ...
In 2004, 11-year-old girl living in Srisomboon, Thailand was very ill.She had come down with some flu-like symptoms and had to be rushed to the hospital. Her mother held her tight through this ordeal, but early one morning she died.Shortly after her mother died.Dr. Kumnuan Ungchusak and Dr. Scott Dowell from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) hurriedly and cautiously approached the scene. The girl had been playing with chickens and they worried that it was "a rare bird flu.""Epidemiologists worried that one or two sick chickens could infect a whole town. And that town could infect the country-or even the world."The mother and child had both died of H5N1, a "deadly bird flu strain."It was time to act!

In 2003, the carcass of a cow in Washington state was discovered to be infected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or mad cow disease. It wasn't a disease to be trifled with because 150 people in Europe came down with the disease and died."In Europe, hundreds of thousands of cows have caught it."Now it had apparently hit the United States.A USDA random scientific test done in Iowa had confirmed it.Will Hughes, an FDA investigator, rushed to the scene.Would he be able to retrace all the meat from this cow before it was too late? Were any more cows infected?

This book is a bit alarmist and slightly dated, but also very realistic. Each "case" poses a question, presents the evidence and the conclusion.A disease fighter's vocabulary is presented, symptoms of bird flu and mad cow disease are listed, the composition of a medical team is laid out and there are several other examples of diseases and epidemics that have occurred. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, a listing of schools and professional organizations, and additional recommended book and web site resources. If you think you'd like to be an epidemiologist you'd better look at books like this! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific "how to" book that keeps my family safe from flu
Every so often a book comes along that is actually a tool. I really enjoyed this book because it was concise, well-researched, and offered clear suggestions that you could personalize for yourself or family members. I think the work of changing your habits about food and nutrition is very important in maintaining health. The one thing I liked was that the author included convenient recipes that provide nourishment, with an emphasis on disease prevention. As an added bonus, body fat is reduced.

The author Jill Fleming, MS, RD is a registered dietitian and award-
winning health & wellness speaker.

Jill became interested in flu prevention when she realized that even though her family is constantly exposed to others who are sick, they no longer get cold and flu viruses.

The author of this book has captured all of the essentials of what a family needs to become resistant to seasonal diseases. These pages are alive, awake, brimming with scrupulous detail about how to make food and lifestyle choices. Her careful presentation teaches us how to create an ideal, disease-proof environment within our bodies, in which viruses cannot survive. She details the importance of nutrition, exercise and rest with proficiency and clarity. Her depictions of internal body systems and functions are simple to understand throughout the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Swine flu H1N1
Professor Terence Stephenson, the president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health in the United Kingdom working at the Institute of Child Health and the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, has written a small and very informative book on the influenza A/H1N1 or swine flu pandemic that hit the world a year ago in March 2009.
In plain and understandable language he explains what the H1N1 is all about, what is a pandemic, the symptoms, treatment, antiviral drugs and antibiotics, the vaccine (this book was published before the vaccine was available on a large scale), prevention, dangers of the disease and frequently asked questions. The index is useful and also a list of "trusted" websites to explore and get further information.
Even though we at this stage in time seems to have passed the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, this book is still relevant and we can learn from the sound explanations and in fact the author managed to to clarify the issues involved in a calm sober and sound way. In fact it turned out that this time the pandemic was not really worse than the annual influenza infections that every year also take lives, but on the other hand we do not know when we will be surprised again. One interesting thing I learned from reading the book was that influenza comes from the words influenza del freddo in Italian, meaning "influence of the cold."
Jessica Kingsley Publishers is recommended for this little timely book at a time, when many people were confused and worried.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welcome relief to the popular hysteria arising from the wide-spread (and often politically motivated) confusion
From the political right as exemplified by the Fox News channel, to the right as represented by 'Real Time with Bill Maher', the American public is deluged with misinformation, misrepresentation, hysteric demagoguery, and fear mongering when it comes to the Swine Flu phenomena. It's high time the public had a rational, reasoned, non-emotional source of sound information on the subject and that's why "Swine Flu / H1N1: The Facts" by Professor Terence Stephenson (President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child health, United Kingdom) is such a welcome relief to the popular hysteria arising from the wide-spread (and often politically motivated) confusion concerning this particular form of influenza. Professor Stephenson knowledgeably addresses such issues as the nature of HIN1 fly; its degree of hazard for children, its symptoms, treatments, vaccines, and prevention. Of special note is the Professor Stephenson's informed and informative text is couched in thoroughly 'reader friendly' language making it especially recommended for the non-specialized general reader and all community/school Health & Medicine reference collections. ... A fire is smoldering in Southeast Asia. A fire, metaphorically speaking, that will soon sweep across our oceans and all corners of our continents, leaving little but death and destruction behind. The worst-case estimates are staggering and unfathomable: 100 million to 360 million souls lost; 1.9 million in America alone. And perhaps most disturbing, and sickening, of all: There's an inexpensive, easily accesible cure that could stop this pandemic dead in its tracks, were it not for the government and Big Pharma greed supressing the truth about this super nutrient's value. Here, in this alarming investigation, you'll find the truth. The facts. Knowledge shared from Nobel Prize-winning chemists and other top scientific minds. Knowledge which, ultimately, may mean the difference between living and succumbing to the worst influenza outbreak we've seen in nearly a hundred years. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Provocative. Simple. Persuasive.
David Kennedy believes that government health officials and the medical community at large are in the hip pocket of big drug companies. This conspiracy has caused important, effective, powerful remedies, like vitamin C, to go unnoticed and unsupported. History will tell whether he is right about that.

What may be more important is that Kennedy and others believe Vitamin C can prevent and treat the avian flu. If this is true, Vitamin C can provide an inexpensive, powerful, effective treatment for a lethal virus.

It now seems clear to every serious-minded person that the Asian Bird Flu is going to attack, the only question is when. When the epidemic strikes, it will be deadly and fast. According to Kennedy, mega-doses of Vitamin C will be effective in protecting people against the flu. For those that have it, he believes that mega-doses of Vitamin C, administered intrvenously, may save many lives.

This book is mostly about the curative effects of Vitamin C. Based on studies and reports of it curing polio, cancer, and other deadly conditions, Kennedy, Linus Pauling, and others state that the health benefits of it are dramatically understated and even unknown.

I don't know if Kennedy is right about the pharamaceutical industry, time will tell. If he is right about Vitamin C and the bird flu, our family will be protected by an inexpensive, easily-available remedy. If he is wrong, we will have taken a lot of Vitamin C.

The highest potentcy in tablet form I am able to find are on amazon.com at 2000MG. Forget Tamiflu and pass the orange juice.

5-0 out of 5 stars ***** Read This Book and Raise Your I.Q.:
As a medical research scientist, I can say beyond a doubt that a flu pandemic is brewing that may change modern civilization in ways that will go beyond our wildest imagination soon. Physicians are observing the creation of a super strain of the avian influenza virus, H5N1, so-called bird flu, that has the potential to kill millions of men, women, and children in every nation. According to the World Health Organization, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a recipe for disaster is clearly in the early genetic-mixing stage. We stand on the abyss of a global wildfire event that will start with the flick of a "viral" matchstick, burn everything in its path, leaving civil disorder and misery in its aftermath on an unprecedented-scale. But what can we do other than prepare ourselves for the inevitable death of our society as we know it? Other than prudent safety precautions, we can also boost our immune systems psychologically against the true number one killer: s-t-r-e-s-s.

Just look at what happened to millions of people impacted by natural disasters in the past year alone from earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis worldwide: They are suffering from PTSD--Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Guess what stress does to your ability to fight bacterial and viral infections? Do you know that when a pandemic strikes within 30-days 100% of the population will be exposed to the virus, but that only 50% will get ill? Did you know that a pandemic comes in 3 phases with the second being the most deadly? Did you know that the most susceptible age group when the virus "hits" is not the young or the old, but the tender-age group 20 to 30? In plain terms, this book will give you the rest of the story; how nature ensures the "survival of the smartest!" Indeed information is power and it will make the difference between life and death in the coming pandemics!

So get smart and raise your I.Q.: "immunity quotient!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Linus Pauling knew what he was talking about!
I was a little disappointed that the information in the book, I already had most of in my head, due to the fact that I'm a Linus Pauling fan when it comes to nutrition. However, if you don't already know what I'm talking about, then this book is very important to you because it offers you the opportunity to embark upon a personal oddyssey beginning with a most critical, ubiquitous nutrient your body is not capable of producing, due to genetic damage that everybody has.You need this book.

After having read this book I now feel I can do something to protect my family and will be starting us all on vitamin c!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Preschoolers
This should be required reading in every preschool class! The illustrations are charming, and invite lots of poring over and are also big enough for group enjoyment. The rhyming is perfect - there's not a forced one in the bunch. It reads really smoothly ( although I keep messing up on the blue footed boobie and the jarubi!) and serves as a great introduction to the importance of hand washing and tissue use.The expressions on the animals faces are priceless when they fall victim to Felicity's gooey hands! It's the perfect length for 2 to 3 year olds.A sure winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 3 year old's new favorite book!
This is one of the best books I've seen for kids - my three year now demands that I read it, and then mommy reads it. This is my first Amazon review - my life is simply too busy right now! - but I felt inspired to highly recommend this book. In short, it is funny, creative, educational, fun for parents too (I don't mind reading it again and again because I like the book), and really well-illustrated. My wife is more discerning than I am and she really was impressed with the book as well. As an aside, I got to meet the author for the first time at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston during a book reading/signing and she seemed very cool so there you go...!

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 star review for Felicity Floo
Very appropriate, funny, and cute.Clever rhymes and just the right length.Dr. Seuss is a legend, but some of his books are too long for my little guy's attention span.I bought multiple copies of this book for gifts. Can't wait to see the next offering from E.S. Redmond. Great stuff!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book with beautiful illustrations and a great message
I bought a copy of this book for my son's kindergarten class. It is the perfect story for kids that age. The pictures are beautiful and keep the kids engaged, and the message about germs is a great one. It really gives the kids a visual understanding of how germs are passed, but it is cute and entertaining too! I was so happy with it, I donated another copy to the school library. The librarian looked it over and loved it too. With cold and flu spreading like water in classrooms, this is a fun book that every kindergarten and Pre-K class should have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from www.firrkids.com
This is certainly an appropriate choice considering the massive outbreak of the H1N1 influenza virus currently sweeping the nation. Judging by little Felicity's reddened nose and glazed eyes, maybe she should have opted for the vaccine injection.

Just looking at the illustrations of Felicity gives me the urge to scrub my hands with antibacterial soap ... or bleach. Her hair hangs limp and greasy, her eyes are rimmed with deep shadows and her scarf drags listlessly behind her. Worst of all, her hands are smeared with .... (euphemistically) green nose goo. She looks rough all right, but manages to summon the energy to visit every pen in the zoo.

As Felicity winds her way through the zoo, slimy green hand prints appear on each animal, marking her path. The llamas have been tagged, as well as the ostriches, giraffe and red kangaroo. Not one animal seems to be safe from the germs that Felicity Floo is spreading. She hugs the elephants, pats the panda and even climb up to manhandle the mountain goats.

The Zookeeper can't figure out what is plaguing his animals. After Felicity's visit, they are sluggish and sleepy, with a strange green hue. Usually the fences are in place to protect the visitors from the ferocious animals. This zoo needs more gates to keep the poor animals healthy and safe from Felicity's goo!

This is a pretty clever and humorous way to spread the message of the importance of using tissues and practicing proper hand washing.Redmond did a great job with the illustrations - the animals look bedraggled and downright miserable following Felicity's visit. Even my five year old was grossed out by Felicity's appearance and appalled she would spread her sickness to the poor animals! We particularly enjoyed the rhyming text and hunting down the green handprints on each page. Felicity really gets around, so look closely. ... Read more
