Good orthopaedic review
A great book for young residents. Very good for getting your basic orthopaedic knowlegde. The book is based upon easy and comprehensive drawings. The drawings make it very easy to read and gives a quick understandment of general treatment guidelines.

The books downsides are some of old remnants in the femur-fracture-treatments and that it's not as indepth as one needs at a later stage. Many of the internal fixation techniques described can be a little too indepth without any real theoretical knowledge. At our hospital we usually use different procedures from the ones described in the book making the descriptions a little useless since McRae doesn't pinpoint which principles are important in each procedure and how to avoid common errors.

With young children in particular, the question may arise if this is related to child abuse. Explain in detail, the best one
This book explains principles of fracture mechanics in detail. Therefore, it is very easy for a beginner to understand. This textbook is the best one I can find at present.

I bought this book as a textbook for a materials-based mechanical properties class. Not a bad book. It remains an old-style textbook, with a fair dealing in various topics. It seems more of an introduction or intermediate level text on the subject as entire other books have been written on the topics of each chapter. It does a good job of pulling those topics together, however. It is also a lot less expensive than similar books.

Fracture Mechanics Basic Book
This is a good book for beginners in fracture mechanics. The contents are simplified and pretty comprehensive.

It wasn't really useful for me. My professor had to add a lot out of this book.

Well written, balanced introduction to fracture mechanics
The 2nd edition of this book is well designed, written and illustrated and is not overly long.As a result it is very clear and easy to read and understand.The focus is on fracture mechanics fundamentals, including basic concepts, analysis, experiments and physical aspects of fracture.It would be a good text for a 1 semester course. However no exercises are given, so the instructor would need to develop these. Also notable is that the cost of this book is very reasonable in comparison toalternatives. Computational fracture mechanics and other modern topics such as cohesive zone modeling, crack tearing using critical CTOA, interface fracture and so on are not discussed. ... Read more

Excellent companion for non-trauma ortho surgeon
As a sports medicine fellowship trained Ortho, I consider this text an excellent reference when on-call.While certainly not a substitute for a fracture text, it provides an excellent quick review before big cases.It is filled with set-up tips and pitfalls.The pics are very high quality.The only negative is the price, but it is the same for all the "Masters" texts.Anyway, at least it's tax deductible!

Good Learning Tool
This Book is well written, easy to read, and very useful in learning Fracture mechanics.

A very incomplete, but interesting book
This book is very good at showing how basic fracture mechanics can be used to understand real fatigue and fracture problems in construction grade steels.The down side to this book is that the authors tend to promote their point of view and give little attention to other points of view.For example the authors spend numerous pages on their CVN to fracture toughness prediction method, yet give the master curve method only a few sentences, and ignore most of the other 20 some CVN to fracture toughness prediction methods that can be found in the literature.The reader might want to also keep in mind the most of the information in this book is based on late 1980's technology in the U.S. construction steel industry.

Mechanical and aerospace fatigue/fracture engineers will probably not find much useful information in this book.

This is an excellent book for the practicing engineer who wants to use fracture mechanics to solve fracture and fatigue problems used in industry today.The author explains fracture mechanics and fatigue in terms the practicing engineer uses on a daily basis.For example, different material properties used in fracture mechanics are compared to Hook's Law, yield strength, and tensile strength, material properites common to structural engineers.

Used this second edition in residency and found it very helpful. Third edition was published last year, 2005 and have it on order.

A must buy for trauma and orthopaedic surgeons!
The authors are the masters of AO school about fracture management. The AO philosophy is well explained in the text. The section on the pelvis and acetabulum fractures are the essence of the whole book. The maindisadvantages of this work are about fractures involving spine, wrist, andhand. The section on spinal trauma loses its focus. This book omits themanagement of the wrist and hand fractures, a sad thing. The management forproximal humerus fracture is quite old fashioned. The AO had developed manynew implants recently but barely mentioned in this book. Many proofreadingerrors will be encoutered but they won't lessen the value of this greatwork. Very Good
I enjoyed this book very much and thought it was very well written. A couple of the characters and the events in their lives could have been better developed, but overall it was a good book.

Hang on for the ride!
"The Point of Fracture" by Frank Turner Hollon is a smart book that happens to be a mystery. It can even be called a literary thriller. Its action and characters drew me in almost immediately, and I could hardly bear to set it down.

Michael Brace is 37 and lives in South Alabama with his gorgeous wife, Suzanne. The two share a bad, sad marriage. But to everyone who knows them, they seem perfect together. They are almost too good at acting happily married. Michael's kind of lazy and unmotivated. Suzanne has a lot of issues, including frequent, debilitating headaches that may be driven by the emotional pain from her father's abuse. But she is seeing a psychiatrist. So she's trying to get help, right? Then the lies begin. Suzanne is not a woman you will soon forget.

This is kind of an anti-love story. We see a crime from the first spark of an idea in the murderer's mind through its planning and step-by-step execution and then through the trial that follows. The meticulous murder is almost elegant in its completeness.

The book is insightful and eloquently written: "He thought, the souls of men are touched by different hands. They were meant to be strange to one another. It is this strangeness that can sometimes bring us together, at certain times, in certain places, for a certain purpose."

There are layers in the well-structured plot. It's very gripping, with no comic relief. The drama features a murder trial with a twist -- well, a couple of twists. It reminds me of a "Columbo" mystery in that we the "audience" know who did what and get to watch it unfold, but we're the only ones who know. It builds in intensity, and once it gets going, it's relentless. When you see where the book is taking you, it's all you can do to fasten your seat belts and hang on for the ride, and I doubt you'll see where it's going to end before the ride is over. And I won't even give you a HINT as to how it ends.

GREAT BOOK
Frank Turner Hollon is the best in the business, bar none. A commanding, accomplished novel by an author everyone needs to discover.

FLAWLESS
Absolutely flawless in every regard.Frank Turner Hollon knows the legal system like nobody's business and the plot of this book is to-the-bone good. Even the throw-aways are worth the price of admission: The Driver's Education scam is priceless and the little details just shine.His best yet, and that's saying a lot. This guy should be rich with this kind of talent.

An extremely well-written novel that will make Hollon a household name
I'm really not sure where to begin with THE POINT OF FRACTURE by Frank Turner Hollon, or even what to tell you. It is extremely well-written --- so well-written in fact that I had to basically set aside all of my other reading for a day or so because its prose was still echoing around in my head. It is also profoundly unsettling, not in an in-your-face manner but similar to what James Tiptree, Jr. so famously described as a pretty pink birthday cake with a razor blade inside.

The source of the unsettlement here is its characters, who are so true-to-life as to be painful. There's Michael Brace, a not-quite functioning alcoholic who lives in the shadow of his fabulously successful older brother Phillip and who is entangled in a strange, loveless marriage with the beautiful Suzanne. Suzanne is both truly mad and brilliantly mad, and she is also very angry; we never learn exactly why she is so angry, but the depth and extent of her insanity is slowly revealed during the first half of the book. Suzanne may be possessed of heartstopping beauty but her scars run deep below her surface. When she exacts revenge on those around her --- revenge against disappointment, perhaps, or their failure to make things better for her --- the repercussions echo and resonate far from Suzanne's epicenter.

We know from the first paragraph of THE POINT OF FRACTURE that all is not well, when we find out that Michael and Suzanne sleep apart as a matter of constant practice. As we learn more --- that Suzanne has severe headaches, and Michael spends A LOT of time drinking and fishing, watching television, and other such pursuits with friends he has known since childhood --- the elements of a disaster waiting to happen coalesce. Suzanne is a master manipulator, and is especially adept at using her beauty and dormant sensuality with a cold, detached and sinister twist. Her plan, even when it passes out of her control, unfolds perfectly, almost to the end. One element that she could not have anticipated changes the outcome of everything; yet one cannot walk away from this novel without feeling that Suzanne's plan may have been successfully carried through.

Frank Turner Hollon is not a household name as yet, though THE POINT OF FRACTURE may well change that for him. This is a work to be read, explored, and experienced repeatedly. Very highly recommended.
