Product Description
Gaucher's disease is a genetic disease in which a fatty substance lipid accumulates in cells and certain organs. Gaucher's disease is the most common of the lysosomal storage diseases. 536 It is caused by a hereditary deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase also known as acid ?-glucosidase. The enzyme acts on a fatty substance glucocerebroside also known as glucosylceramide. When the enzyme is defective, the substance accumulates, particularly in cells of the mononuclear cell lineage. Fatty material can collect in the spleen, liver, kidneys, lungs, brain and bone marrow. Symptoms may include enlarged spleen and liver, liver malfunction, skeletal disorders and bone lesions that may be painful, severe neurologic complications, swelling of lymph nodes and occasionally adjacent joints, distended abdomen, a brownish tint to the skin, anemia, low blood platelets and yellow fatty deposits on the white of the eye sclera. Persons affected most seriously may also be more susceptible to infection. Some forms of Gaucher's disease may be treated with enzyme replacement therapy. ... Read more

Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on the subject of Gaucher s disease. Gaucher's disease is a rare, inherited disorder that causes too much of a substance called glucocerebroside to build up in your spleen, liver, lungs, bones and sometimes in your brain. The buildup prevents these organs from working properly. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor reference tools and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust. This thoroughly researched collection presents vital information from many authoritative sources: Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the relevant institute for this disease, and others. In addition to the comprehensive disease-specific coverage, this disc set also includes our Medical Encyclopedia, a $19.95 value! The Encyclopedia presents a collection of official documents about a wide range of medical topics, diseases, illnesses, health and wellness. Product Description
Suzanne Winston is on top of the world when her latest novel makes the New York Times best-seller list. To her younger sister, Steffani Blacker, Suzanne has it all--or nearly. A successful writer of popular fiction, mother of three and a beautiful, vivacious woman recently free of an unhappy marriage, Suzanne seems to be someone to envy and admire. Steffani is also brilliant and beautiful but is desperately ill with Gaucher's Disease, the painful hereditary illness that has plagued her since childhood. Unable to bear children, too easily led into wild, intense intimacy with the wrong men, Steffani is determined to live every moment before her time runs out. And so Steffani, terribly brave yet terrified of dying, is tempted to settle old scores and get even with "perfect" Suzanne in all the ways a sister can wound a sister with word, a phone call or a careless betrayal of secrets.

But what Steffani doesn't see is the deep insecurity and dark feelings that shadow Suzanne's carefully controlled world of family, home and career. Suzanne's ex-husband, Alex, the handsome, successful attorney she adored since she was a teenager, has left her scarred and mistrustful of men. Then a disturbing anonymous letter threatens to destroy her reputation and leave her financially ruined. Suddenly her comfortable Los Angeles life-style, her family and friends, and her fabulous success are slipping away into a nightmare existence that will shake her loyalties and values, and even endanger her life. In this crisis, Suzanne must learn whom she can trust--the new man who holds out an irresistible promise of passion, the sister she both loves and resents or the parents who are wrapped up in their own pain. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars tedious, boring, 300 pages too long
This book goes on and on and on.I seldom give up on a book and read the ending but this one was really boring as it seemed to go on forever and the ending was somewhat obvious. The whole bunch of them needed a good therapist and should have gone for a group rate. ... Read more
