5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Separate Truth from Myth............
As far as hair loss and treatments are concerned, this book was one of the most helpful and comprehensive guides I have read. It is NOT a sales pitch for hair transplants. It is an all-in-one source of knowledge for those either worried about their hair loss or for those who are thinking about a hair transplant. If you have little to no knowledge on the subject or are just starting to see what is available, this book is a GREAT starting point.

It really dispels a lot of the myths about hair loss that are so commonly found on the internet. The book is organized well and is easy to read. Each chapter is pretty much self-contained, so if you don't care about a particular topic (like Wigs for example), then you will not miss a beat if you decide to skip that chapter. I am very glad I received a copy of this book.

I would also like to add that I visited Dr. Rassman's and Dr. Pak's office and I was treated with the utmost courtesy and respect. In addition to the guidebook they gave me, I was also given a great deal of useful information during my visit. They saved me time, money and a lot of heartache. I am very, very glad that I decided to visit their offices and that I read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable hair loss information resource
I found this book to be very thorough in its scope of information, yet approachable in writing style. I read almost the whole book in one evening. I've been researching hair loss for a couple years, but learned new things reading this book -- particularly about pre and post surgery details, and use of Propecia (that it can actually cause initial hair loss before it starts growing hair). The doctors who wrote this book don't gloss over any details, or make hair transplantation seem glamorous or simple. They outline both the risks and rewards in realistic terms. I highly recommend this book for anyone researching hair loss and hair restoration or transplant procedures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for beginners
HAIR LOSS & REPLACEMENT for DUMMIES
Authors; William R. Rassman MD and Robert M. Bernstein MD (with Jae Pak MD & Eric Schweiger MD).
Presentation; Paperback binding, 314 pages.

Apart from the textbooks, written for professional, there have been many books on hair loss and replacement written for members of the public. I have read at least a dozen of these over the past 30 years and they are all quite informative and, for their time of publication, reasonably accurate and helpful.

Hair Loss & Replacement is no exception in this but it is a considerable cut above the rest. Firstly it is very up-to-date and contains a vast amount of information all exceedingly well organized in 7 sections containing 18 chapter,
I- Getting to Know your Hair,
II- The Root of Hair Loss,
III- Creative Techniques for Concealing Hair Loss
IV- Phamaceutical, Laser and Topical Therapies
V- Advanced Hair Loss Solutions (60 pages about hair transplantation)
VI- The Part of Tens (10 myths about hair loss, pros and cons for wigs, hair treatmentsand transplants)
VII- Appendices- this include a Glossary of scientific terms used in the book. In addition the reader is provided with the addresses of all the well known hair-loss websites and support organizations and many more. There is also an outstanding Index running to16 pages.

Throughout the book important points to remember are clearly marked with an icon in the margin, as are tips and warnings. The reader is even alerted by another icon to technical paragraphs that he can safely skip without losing the thread of the chapter.

Now a warning. Although this book is designed for those with little prior knowledge about hair, it is certainly not recommended for "dummies".It is a very well written and technical book, authored by two of the acknowledged "gurus" of our field, Bill Rassman and Bob Bernstein, The previous scientific writings of these two men are already at the top of any reading list on hair replacement surgery. Far from being a text for the "everyman" the book would be an ideal primer for any doctor wanting to know more about hair loss and its replacement, before committing many months to a specialized training course in hair replacement surgery.

Every aspect of hair growth, hair loss and hair replacement is covered concisely in this book in reasonably simple language and I could find few faults within the text. Perhaps even then, they were just minor differences of opinion between experts, rather than faults.

There is no attempt to "talk down" to the lay reader and in fact the only concession to the layman is that each of the 18 chapters is fairly well self-contained and if he only wants to know about, diseases that cause hair loss, hair transplantation or hairpieces, then he can be well informed in a self-contained section.
Summary. This is a really outstanding book for the beginner who has a considerable degree of education but no place for a true "dummy" to be browsing. Perhaps someone will do a 50-page comic-book version for these individuals who, judging by popular book sales and TV ratings, make up a considerable proportion of our population.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
There is alot of good information here, but I found alot of flaws in the book.It contradicts itself in a few places on the topic of blood flow with regard to the laser treatments. Also the book claims to specify which products are superior, but it does not, it simply mentions the products.Other than that, its pretty accurate.Im glad I bought it.Its worth checking out. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it new !
Ladies this book has some useful information, however most of the information is only helpful for those who have done little research.
This could be a good starting reference book. I did find a few things out I did not know and went to a few websites I had not considered. So for the used book price this book is worth the money.
Did you know that hair loss is one of the first signs of diabetes, and I wish this book had touched on this fact ( copyright on this book is 2000). I however, have not seen really any information other than on diabetes' websites that informs you of this and they have been updated.
He does give more possibilities than other books that were copyright dates of 2005 for natural supplements and diet. I can find hair restoration anywhere and don't think that should be so deeply covered in a book of hair loss. It should have dove deeper into diet, diabetes, and other causes.
I found the bald truth to be better than this book, it is by the same author.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning - don't read this book unless you're an insomniac
After reading this book I can tell you this, Stanley Kobren is certainly no expert on hair loss, but he is good at making his readers fall asleep. The book has no meaningful insight and most of the information is written mostly on a grammer school level. Don't even waste your time reading this book if you're serious about avoiding hair loss.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't even cover the basics
This is an extremely superficial book on hair loss. You can find out more on the internet in about 15 minutes than you can by reading this book. Nearly half of the book is devoted to transplants, wigs, etc. rather than talking about WHY people lose hair and what can be done about it short of these drastic measures. So many women suffer from hair loss that is treatable and this book does not offer any real help or advice. Stick to the internet and the wealth of knowledge available on hair loss sites.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat helpful
Although I liked this book, I already knew most of the information that it contained. I was somewhat disappointed that the book did not have many specific recommendations for hair loss products, i.e.: dosages, amounts, application procedures. The book also spent way too much time discussinghair transplants which are not an alternative for most women due to diffusehair loss and unstable donor sites. The book gives far too few doctorrecommendation and once again, the doctors recommended were mostly hairtransplant specialist. If you are a beginner to female hair loss, you willprobably find this book helpful as it does contain good basic information.I, myself, was disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book -A Real Lifesaver!
Thank you, thank you, thank you. This book has given me hope after months of heartache and frustration. My doctors have not helped me at all, it seems like all they know about is Rogaine and nothing else.

I now have the knowledge I need to seek out alternative and new treatments that havenever been mentioned to me before.

Not only do I recommend that everywoman reads this book, but every doctor treating women for hair loss shouldread it too, you may just learn something! ... Read more

Product Description

An expert physician's strategic guide for women who suffer from (or live in fear of) losing their hair.

In Women's Hair Loss: The Hidden Epidemic, Dr. Michael Lorin Reed draws on his 30 years of experience in treating female patients suffering from the unsettling and often devastating condition that is hair loss. Through his wit, knowledge, and compassion, this book gives women hope and much-needed help in the struggle against this little discussed - but very real - epidemic.

From Chapter 1:

The problem is gradually worsening and you are beginning to panic. The stylist finally admits that your hair is thinner. He says you should take vitamins. You think that stress is probably the cause, but your life is not going to get easier any time soon. You are now afraid that you are going to go bald. Should you start looking into hairpieces? You begin to wash your hair less often, but it seems to look even worse with less shampooing. You are having nightmares of people staring at your balding head. Anxiety attacks happen sometimes when you see other women with noticeable hair loss. Why are there suddenly so many of them?

The time has come to take serious action. You do an internet search on hair loss in women. The search turns up a bewildering variety of products and services. How do you know what to believe and what works and what doesn't? Even interviews with medical experts give conflicting opinions about what is helpful and what is not. You don't want to waste your time on bogus nostrums, but you also don't want to endanger your health with powerful medications. Also, you don't really want a hair transplant, right?

Okay, so let's work together and figure out how to move forward without making too many missteps. Your hair is depending on US!

Dr. Reed has appeared on The View, MSNBC and ABC News and been quoted in The New York Times, Time Magazine, MSN, and Real Simple Magazine. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Incredulous Reader
Excerpted from book, "Women must have some white carbs in their diet or they will go crazy".
Not very scientific. It is very subjective and offensive. I found the rest of the book the same. There was no insight offered regarding this problem. For women, hair loss is a very serious problem. I did not find the dr.'s cutesy comments about women with children pulling out their hair very funny or amusing. Let's face it. A women who is losing her hair can find no humor in the condition. I paid $29.95 for this book. The usurious price takes advantage of women with this problem. I have never regretted a purchase more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting Hair Back Takes Time
I too have experienced hair loss and have searched for the solution, only to find dead end after dead end. The frustration has been unbearable, until six months ago I "found" Dr. Reed. I have followed his instructions and read his book, and YES, hair does grow back. I'm a believer in the process - ladies, it definitely is a process. Took me about a year to get to a place I'm happy with. I don't believe there are any shortcuts in this. I thought the book finally did a really good job explaining what to really expect when it comes to FPHL.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are We That Gullible?
The first four reviews are the most blatantly staged fake reviews by Dr. Reed and his publicists.Hard to believe Amazon would allow such fake reviews of a very expensive book.

3-0 out of 5 stars ???
I haven't read the book yet but did the same (p.r.) person write all these four 5 star reviews?

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money!!!!!!
This book is the best source of information that I have found (and I've read alot on this subject). It clears up all the confusing information that is out there and gives clear direction regarding what works, what doesn't and why.

Product Description
According to Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., a majority of the 42 million American women between the ages of thirty-five and fifty-five suffer from vulnerability to their own hormones. Appearance, emotions -- and even sex drive -- may be affected. Symptoms include thinning hair, persistent acne, mood swings, low energy, loss of pleasure in sex, weight gain, irregular periods, and pain. While the media has emphasized the problems of menopause, Dr. Redmond explains that all too many women experience hormonal miseries even in their thirties. Lab tests are often normal because the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. Healthy, active women suddenly find that once quiescent hormones have taken over control of their lives. Because their problems are often dismissed as trivial, women who are hormonally vulnerable are frequently thwarted in their quest for help. Too often they are brushed off with remarks such as, "Your tests are normal; there's nothing wrong with you." This is tragic because, as Dr. Redmond demonstrates, hormonal balance can nearly always be restored with the treatments he details, which include individualized use of prescription medications, herbal supplements, lifestyle changes, and even spiritual practices. Many women have heard that testosterone can help sex drive, but most have not been warned about the damage that careless testosterone therapy can cause on skin and hair.

In this book, Dr. Redmond, an internationally recognized authority on testosterone in women, explains the only safe ways to use testosterone. With informative sidebars, quizzes, and personal stories of women who have overcome hormone vulnerability, this helpful book will empower you to find treatments for your hormone problems that are tailored to fit your own body, biochemistry, symptoms, and lifestyle. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than the truth about women's hair loss
If you have to choose between this book and the women's hair loss, choose this one. This book covered much more ( maybe that is because so much research is done for men rather that women at this point).
I still think many resources are in your best interest, and this book should be added to the list of were you get your information.
I have decided to go natural at this time, because I would want any future children of mine not to be born with defects. I am currently using the herbal supplements and a DHT blocking shampoo from eBay. I have not noticed hair growth, but slowed hair loss I have noticed. I do see hair shafts coming back which I take as a good sign(using supplements 3 weeks and the shampoo 2 weeks). The book does bring up herbs and shampoos you can use.
Diabetes is brought up just a little which is better than most. The Internet will expand on the subject, that hair loss is generally one of the first signs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for valuable info on hair-loss treatment options
This is a very well researched source of information on various types of hair-loss treatment. The author speaks from experience with successfully combating hair loss after extensive research on various products. I think that makes the book more credible than the self-promoting product sites out there. The author covers virtually all of the effective methods of hair loss treatment, including Propecia, herbal suppliments, topical solutions (monoxidil etc), hair transplants, and more. A must buy for all those interested in knowing pretty much all there is to know about hair loss treatment options, their effectiveness, pros and cons, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book is largely a regurgitation of the very limited information that is already widely available. Reading it was superfluous. Most of what Kobren covers is cosmetic management of the problem; the advice on diet applies only to the worst lifestyle offenders, and he paints finasteride (Propecia) as a panacea, which it definitely isn't. The book is thin, both physically and in terms of content.

The irony is that Kobren claims to be a debunker and "consumer advocate", and this book is supposed to be his vehicle. To an experienced eye, it just looks like he is joining the rush to make money from male insecurities about hair loss.

The answers to male pattern baldness will come, eventually, but they won't be found in this book. Save your money, do your own research, talk to a dermatologist, take care of your health (good advice anyway), and you'll be further ahead than you will be after reading this.

1-0 out of 5 stars Save Your Hair & Your Money
I disagree with the author.First, Propecia grows hair in one area at the expense of another.Spironolactone has been proven to stop the growth of hair.DHT does not cause hair loss.Spencer does not even mention the nutrient theory of baldness and how many people have been regrowing scalp hair by removing body hair, allowing nutrients to get to the scalp. Can you tell me what it takes to grow scalp hair if not androgens? Ernie

5-0 out of 5 stars Reseeding my Receding Hair Line
Pretty good book for seperating myth from facts. I could tell that the author had put quite a bit of research into the book. It impressed me so much that I decided to give the Propecia + Saw Palmetta combo a try. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
The author states that her program is easy and inexpensive and that the ingredients can be found in any drug store or natural foods market.

First of all, the ingredients (good luck finding them) are expensive. I've gone to several drug stores and natural food markets and have not been able to find all the ingredients.

Secondly, the ingredients are expensive, and contrary to what others have mentioned in their reviews, they don't last that long. Sounded like most reviewers hadn't started the program quite yet and were swayed by the author's claims.

Lastly, this book, as well as the follow up, "Grow Hair Fast," are extremely poorly written. As a matter of fact, the 2 books are nearly identical to one another. I guess if the guidelines listed were truly easy and inexpensive, then everybody would be doing it, and the big drug companies wouldn't have any products on the market for hair loss.

4-0 out of 5 stars How I stopped hair loss
This is not an actual review, because I haven't read the book. I just wanted to share a hair loss recipe with you good people - the one that helped me.

I am a woman, 32 years old. I have had my hair falling out at above average rate since puberty. For a woman, a number of hairs falling out shouldn't be more than 70 per day. I would say that for me it was probably around 200. I was used to seeing bunches of hairs in the sink after washing it, on the pillow, on clothes. Then, few months ago, few factors (hairdresser made a horrible mistake, I made serious changes in my diet and was under a lot of stress) added up and for the next three months I was losing hair at the rate 500 (very roughly - I didn't actually count, but every time I ran fingers through my hair, I would have hairs in my hand). I thought I would end up bald. Then, I found a recipe on the Internet (bless it), and after using it every day, I can testify that it really works! Within the first month, the hair loss returned to normal (what was normal for me - maybe 200 hairs a day), and within the second month, my hair loss became less than average - I would say less than 50 hairs a day! The sink is almost empty after washing hair. I actually solved the problem I have been having my whole adult life.

The recipe:
1 1/2 cup of dry nettle
1/2 cup chopped onion
Put in a container, add enough rubbing alcohol to cover. After a few days (or more), strain and use liquid to massage scalp once a day.

1-0 out of 5 stars Another rip-off, please save your money
I've read the book.

One look at the "testimonial" pictures in the back and you'll know this is worse than a rip-off.

Because she is intructing you to go thru a laborious, time-consuming process. And even her own customer's before and after pics are a joke.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Saved My Life
Riquette gives me hope that I can embrace a healthy lifestyle and embark upon the path to total hair restoration. This book has been very benefitial to me in my personal life. There are so many great and easy recipes for hair growing tonics-- I especially liked that. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars misleading title for the book
I was disapointed with the book, its more like a counsiling book than a hair loss book.If i wanted counsiling i would have bought a counsiling book.I read the book in an hour.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book. Should be added to your reading list.
I don't get some of the negative reviews as the book never claims to cure or solve hairloss. Its clearly someone's take and experience on the matter and its a damn good one.You never read the stuff that this book talks about and it should be read by anyone who is looking seriously at this issue.Folks who are looking for desperate, quick fixes are going to end up making some stupid and rash decisions. When weighing your options or just looking to enlighten yourself in healthy ways of dealing with your hairloss, this book should be a must on your list of reading.

1-0 out of 5 stars Figuratively and literally got "scalped"
What a rip off! Was not amused at all. Extremely misleading and deceptive. I have a very good sense of humor and appreciate this guys story but I would have appreciated some honesty in the advertising of this book, rather than a play on words. I would be more apt to laugh and see the point of his story if he would refund me back the price of the book and keep the shipping and handling as a "tip". The irony of this all is that this joker will probably make a sizeable amount of money from this book and then go visit some world renowned hair transplant surgeon for "the works". He will then release a sequel to his book and entitle it, "How I duped thousands and raised money for my hair transplant, and then some". What sucks more than losing your hair is losing money to jokers like this in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
Good book.Very helpful. The book is not what you think it is, but I won't blow it's cover. Insightful, smart and funny.Worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars You want to read this book.
As a rule, I am very skeptical of the many hairloss resources our there that at the end of it all have one agenda, to sell me something. This book is one of the few honest places I've been to and really got something out of it.I whole heartedly reccomend a read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new or revolutionary
There's nothing in this book that I didn't already know from visiting various dermatology and trichology websites. There isn't anything new or revolutionary. There are no secrets revealed. If you'd rather not look online, this might be a good fit.For this reason, it loses a star.

The second issue would be the topics discussed. The information on traction alopecia is very limited which surprised me because this is quite prevalent in women.I've seen more of that than other forms of thinning and balding that take up the bulk of this book.It loses a star for this.

Another issue would be the treatments.Nothing revolutionary.Any doctor or website could give you the same information.Unfortunately, there aren't really inexpensive, permanent solutions available..If you're expecting to get this information, this just doesn't have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide
This book is a comprehensive guide to the complex problem of women's hair loss. It addresses traditional treatments, natural treatments, and nutrition supplements that are proven helpful for each type of alopecia.

4-0 out of 5 stars huge help
I thought this book was really great, easy to follow and I loved that in different sections they would actually outline treatments recommended by various hair specialists around the country. The only drawback is that the book is now 6 years old and should probably be updated. We're ready for a second edition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enormously Helpful
If you're a woman who is in a panic after recently discovering hair loss (thinning or baldness), this is the book for you. It gives a good, basic overview of medical and alternative therapies and hair care, grooming, and cosmetic issues. Also, it suggests how to talk to your doctor about hair loss and what questions, tests, and physical examinations your doctor should respond with. This books helps with the fear and frustration of female hair loss. Highly recommended. ... Read more
