Product Description
Headache is a huge public health problem and migraine alone cost 27 billion Euros per year in Europe. It is therefore important how the health care service for headache patients is organised throughout the world. Patients seen at headache clinics are more severely affected than those seen in general practice, and headache clinics need to be familiar with a long list of relatively rare headache disorders.

Part of the Frontiers in Headache Research series, this volume is the first book to focus specifically on headache clinics, their classification and organization, their methods of diagnosis, and their approaches to multi-disciplinary management. The clinical features of patients seen in headache clinics are thoroughly discussed. The value of a number of diagnostic laboratory techniques including when and how to use neuro-imaging is discussed. Also a number of more specialised methods employed only in referral headache centres are covered, such as nitro-glycerine challenge, indomethacin test, and oxygen breathing. The treatment options for severely affected patients are discussed including the possibilities of combining two or more prophylactic medications, the use of epidural blood patch and the different methods for discontinuation of medication overuse.

This volume will be an invaluable resource for neurologists, physicians in headache/pain clinics and interested general practitioners. ... Read more

Product Description
Jennette Fulda went to bed on February 17, 2008, with a headache, and more than three years later, it still hasn’t gone away. Yes, she’s tried everything: intravenous drugs, chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, subliminal messaging, marijuana (for medical purposes only), heavy drinking (which just made it hurt more), and lots and lots of chocolate. A pint of ice cream makes her feel better, but her insurance doesn’t cover mint chocolate chip.

In this painfully honest, smart, and funny memoir, the popular PastaQueen.com blogger who chronicled her nearly two hundred pound weight loss in Half-Assed shares her incredible journey to find relief from a chronic headache. As she visits countless doctors, indulges all manner of unsolicited advice from the Internet, and investigates every possible cause, from a brain tumor to a dead twin living in her brain, Jennette considers what it means to suffer, how to live with pain, and why the best treatment might be the simplest: laughter. ... Making the Pain Go Away

If your child suffers from bad headaches, then you know all too well the panic and frustration they cause -- and not just for your child, who may be too young or unwell to articulate what he's feeling, but for everyone in the family. When over-the-counter medications don't work and your pediatrician doesn't have an answer, you can now turn to preeminent headache and migraine expert Dr. Seymour Diamond for help.

In Headache and Your Child, he gives parents information on the most up-to-date diagnostic tools and treatment options available for this increasingly common childhood illness. Dr. Diamond's extensive experience guides you from accurate identification through the best therapy for your child's specific problem, focusing particularly on migraines -- the most common acute headache in children and adolescents. He also discusses the whole gamut of possible headache causes, from stress through more serious conditions. With this book as a guide, you'll find:

5-0 out of 5 stars There is help for children
I literally just completed an inpatient treatment program provided by the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. They were very helpful in reducing the severity of my 21+ year daily chronic headache/migraine. This clinic was founded by Dr. Seymour Diamond. My son also suffers from bad migraines. Most neurologists have been hesitant to treat him because if his age. The Diamond Headache Clinic work with children without hesitation. The doctors here and this book have a wealth of information. I am anxious to apply some of the things I learned there, such as biofeedback and low tyramine diet, with my son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Book
Dr, Diamond has put together a book full good information relating to childhood headaches. It seems the book is targeted at other Doctors as much as it is for parents.Overall this book was helpful in learning about my daughters migrains but the diary section at the end was a little hard to use.Through my research to help my daughters I found a book that works great and is simple for parent and child to use. The title is "The Headache Detective" by John Ricker. It's a headache workbook designed for children that is easy to follow. It is prabably a little more helpful pinpointing what is causing your child's headache than Dr Diamond's book. Both books were helpfull

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered
Headache and Your Child is "just what the doctor ordered."My child would double over in pain for no apparent reason. The doctors couldn't pinpoint any cause for the episodes. We had been searching for answers for over a year when we came back to the idea of possible migraines. In searching for information on abdominal migraines I kept coming across the name, Dr. Seymour Diamond. This book has helped us understand migraines and their causes as well as inform us about current treatment options that are available, everything from medication to biofeedback.Through the use of case studies, Dr. Diamond discusses up-to-date diagnostic tools and treatments. He reassures parents that while there are sometimes very serious underlying conditions, not every headache is an indicator of a brain tumor.

I highly recommend this as a "must have" book for the parent of any child that suffers from headaches, not just migraines. It can help in identifying the type of headache your child experiences and offer suggestions of appropriate treatments. If your child has already been diagnosed with migraines, it is still a wonderful reference book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not always myofacial
Well I respect the author and this book, it does not represent all men with Prostatitis. I have battled this disease for a long time now, and was told the answer lay in this book, or with the Stanford Protocol, advocated on the chronicprostatitis forum, which I initially believed. This can be dangerous, as I bought into this myth, without looking at other options. It turns out it was mycoplasma genitalium and treatable with antibiotics. I almost spent 8k to go to Stanford, not to mention the thousands I already spent on PT, etc. I am glad I kept investigating on my own. My advice, read the book, but don't forget to look at all avenues and causes.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS SAVED MY LIFE!
I have suffered from chronic pelvic pain since I was eighteen, which was fourteen years ago.I developed the pain through over-stretching.Initially I thought that it had been a tear or sprain.Who knows, it might have been.Physical therapy helped me up to a point, but I could not get rid of the inflammation or sever burning.I was in pain constantly regardless of what I was doing: sitting or standing. It got to the point that my legs atrophied and I was forced to sit in a chair constantly: it hurt worse standing than sitting.Every physician I went to could not help me.Urologist didn't understand what was going on and every physical therapist told me that there was no connection between my pelvic floor and the other areas I was feeling pain. They would usually blow me off and tell me that I needed to go see a psychologist.I did! Even a psychiatrist!Even my brother who is a physician could not help me.I had searched the web for help and I came across a lot of stuff.I found a place in China that will directly inject your prostate with antibiotics. There is the Chicago clinic.I even started taking all of these weird supplements.Nothing helped. My whole life was destroyed by this problem.Anyone who has suffered from this or knows someone who suffers from this will testify.I wouldn't wish this on my enemy.Because of this injury my whole life stopped.I still live at home.I haven't graduated college. When my ex-fiancé got married I wanted to give up.Luckily, I found this book just like many of you have who are reading this right now.I did a google search and found this book right here on this site. After reading the book I started to get better. My whole life was here!I enrolled in the clinic. At first I was hesitant, but I had nothing to lose. After fourteen years of hell, by the third day I was pain free.It lasted for a couple hours, actually through the night. It was amazing. This is actually an easy fix. It's like have a constantly flexed muscle that needs to relax: that's it.The process can be long but it is simple. There is nothing complicated. You learn how to manually stretch your floor and on top of that you learn how to relax. There are no medications, no injections it's not that complicated! The treatment is simple and completely effective.I met people there who had had surgery on their genitals! It is very sad that even today medical industry is clueless about this.I went to the clinic about two months ago.Today I am lifting weights, playing basketball, having sex regularly and even, although not recommended, doing sit-ups all in the same day! No joke.If anyone out there has questions about me or the clinic write me.I'll help you!Thank you Dr. Wise, Tim and Sarah!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Information: A+ Presentation: C+
To my knowledge, this is the only book on the subject of chronic pelvic pain and after reading it, I finally have a sense of hope for my condition. In my situation, symptoms having been getting worse over the past year - not so bad that I've been incapacitated, but bad enough that I've been concerned for my long term health. This book has been a godsend. For now I understand what causes, and how to treat my pelvic pain. That is a huge revelation.

About a year ago, I went to a urologist, who, after performing some tests, stated my problem was simply stress. However, he provided no information on how to TREAT my current symptoms. This book has filled that void, and now I have sense of hope for the future. And that is very important. Time will tell if how much symptoms will improve.I've already had some abatement of my symptoms just since reading the book.

I have to disagree with one reviewer who feels this book is merely an advertisement for their week long program in Northern California. It's really just in the chapter on Trigger Point Release that the authors bang that drum, and it's for good reason: These are techniques that, as far as I can tell, DO require supervision for safety and best results.

My only criticism of the book lies in the area of presentation.Dr. Wise and Dr. Anderson are not writers, and it shows. The book desperately needs a competent editor - it is littered with typos and grammatical mistakes (there's a even a grammatical mistake on the cover!), and some sentences are downright clunky.I found the chapter on Paradoxical Relaxation particularly awkward.

But don't throw out the baby with the bath water. All in all this is a huge achievement in the research and treatment of assorted pelvic pain conditions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Possibility
I am halfway through reading this book and think that the info. is helpful to my condition (prostatitis). I will know better after I finish reading and impliment some of the exercises and such recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
It is definitely not a self-help book, quite a lot of information though. So how to treat yourself though moment - to moment paradoxical relaxation? Unfortunately ,you will not find the answer in the book.

    Product Description

Headache is often due to build-up of stress and tension. Acupressure is an effective way to relieve painful sensation associated these conditions. This guide by Aaron Stein, PhD, is based on over 5,000 years of Chinese practice of self-acupressure.

    Features

    - Step-by-step guide to relieving headaches and migraines at 5 locations:
    - In the frontal region of the head (frontal headache).
    - In the back of the head (occipital headache).
    - On the side of the head (temporal headache).
    - On the top of the head (vertex headache).
    - Pain in the eye (headache behind the eye).
    - Every step explains point location, direction of force, and duration of massage.
    - No previous experience necessary
    - Total treatment duration 10 to 15 minutes.

    How acupressure works

Nobody knows how acupressure works. Very often pain is caused by a self-perpetuating mechanism: pain causes the mind to be attentive to pain, that, in turn causes more pain and even more attention, and so on.
Most likely acupressure works by interrupting this vicious circle. How does acupressure interrupt the cycle? Stimulation of active points is thought to lead to increased release of endorphins. Endorphin is a natural body painkiller. Endorphin and morphine are chemically different molecules but, by coincidence, they have very similar 3-dimensional shape. This similarity in shape allows morphine to bind the endorphin receptor and reduce pain.
Thus endorphin released by acupressure stimulation may lead to temporal reduction of mind's attention to pain, interruption of pain cycle, and following complete cessation of pain.

    Product Description
Reassuring and authoritative, the first and only book by a pediatric specialist to illuminate the sometimes frightening world of a child's headache pain and offer advice on symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and how to deal with doctors.

Dr. Sarah Cheyette, a pediatric neurologist and mother of two young children, gives attention to a serious need: helping parents and caregivers of children from infants to teenagers understand and deal with headache pain, treat it with and/or without medication, and keep it from controlling their child's life as well as their own.

In a clear, lively, easy-to-understand style, with case studies, resources, diagrams, and a valuable "sample headache diary," Dr. Cheyette answers such pressing questions as:

    • How can I identify and treat pain in my baby? My toddler? My teen?
    • What are the possible causes of my child's headache?
    • What medications and nondrug therapies are available?
    • How can I prepare my child for a doctor's visit?
    • What questions should my doctor ask to ensure an accurate diagnosis of my child's headache?
    • What are our options if we've already seen a doctor ... and the headache still isn't going away? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Helpful Book For a Frustrated Mother

This is probably the most easy to understand books I have read on childhood headaches. It is an easy read and makes a complicated topic simple to understand.I would highly recommend this book to mom's out there who think there's a little more to their child's headaches.By the time you're done reading you will have a good background to talk with your child's pediatrician.

I have also used "The Headache Detective" workbook as a diary to track both my girls' headaches. The Headache Detective; by John Ricker has helped us more than any other book in really finding the foods my daughters were eating that were triggering there headaches. It cost a little more than other books but not needing to put together my own diary was well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book was very helpful.Although many of the recipes contained trigger foods, it was very clear to the reader to watch for or substitute for these foods if they were a problem.I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from migraines.

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of good info
Lots of good info if you are trying to sort out migraine triggers. With the help of this book and others I am almost migraine free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Authors Should FollowTheir Own Rules
This book was a disapointment!I have suffered with migraine headaches for years. And I usually make two different dinners each meal--one for my family and one for me.I was hoping to find some recipes I could make that everyone would be able to eat. This book starts out identifying foods that possibly "trigger" headaches, ie., citrus, broadbeans, raw onions, caffeine, etc.You are then informed to avoid these foods. Then the authors print out recipes THAT HAVE THESE SAME FOODS AS MAIN INGREDIENTS!
What a waste of my money this book was.I am disgusted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Foods don't cause migraine
This book perpetuates and exploits the myth that foods cause or trigger migraines. No food has ever been demonstrated to cause, promote, precipitate ("trigger") or aggravate migraine. Beyond a placebo effect, dietary restriction is ineffective as a treatment for headache. (The exceptions are foods containing caffeine or alcohol, both of which are more properly regarded as drugs.) Migraine patients should eat a healthy, varied diet, and not deprive themselves of freedom, enjoyment and nutrition because of an outdated and mistaken belief.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book thinking I would be getting more of a variety of meals to help prevent migraines and better planning of meals. What I found in my opinion was a lot of receipies with questionable migraine-triggering ingredients. There were VERY few recipes using just the "foods allowed" section.I found about 10 without any yeast, vinegar or other questionable items such as canned or jar ingredients. When you are at the elimination diet stage after being first diagnosed with migraines, this is the diet you need most.At my next Dr. appointment, I plan on bringing in the book to get his opinion.I did find the food purchasing guide helpful. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book provides thorough background information about various types of headaches and the condtions which causes headcauses. Thus, it helps you understand why you may get headaches and what you may need to do to help you
    deal with these headaches.

5-0 out of 5 stars How Do You Make That Pain Go Away?
Mayo Clinic on Headache is the best resource I've seen for explaining what is known about headaches, how they originate, how to avoid them and how to reduce their duration and discomfort. The book's only weakness is that it came out before the research findings that COX-2 inhibitors (such as Vioxx) can be dangerous to your health. So be sure to discuss those products with your physician before taking them for headache relief.

More is known about how to treat the symptoms of headaches than how to avoid them or cure their sources, and this book looks candidly at all these areas.

The primary value of the book, however, is in helping you decide if you should treat your headaches yourself . . . or seek the aid of a physician, or complementary remedies. The book does a good job of explaining which types of headaches can be symptoms of some more serious disease and which aren't, and what a physician might be able to do for you that you cannot do for yourself.

About a quarter of the book deals with migraines, but you get plenty about standard tension headaches plus the rarer forms such as cluster headaches, daily chronic headaches, neuralgias, and headaches where a treatable disease or injury is present.

The book also helps you understand how to describe your headaches to physician which can speed and help ensure relief.

Many books about a particular health problem treat everyone the same in the text. This book avoids that limitation through a 30 page section on the special issues of women, children, teens and older adults.

I don't often have headaches.I decided to read the book to understand more about the problems of family members and friends who have severe headache issues. The book more than fulfilled my hopes for increased understanding, and I'm sure my support for them will be more effective in the future as a result. For example, the book cleared up my confusion about what a rebound headache is (caused by overusing certain analgesics).

Ultimately, you have probably wondered how a part of the body that doesn't have nerves can have pain associated with it.I thought the explanations were very helpful.Parts of the areas near the brain do have nerves . . . and we use our brains for cognition.Although no one knows all the answers, you'll be interested to better understand the processes involved and how medications and other treatments work. ... All physicians need to learn to diagnose and manage head pain. However, there are many causes of headache: some are secondary to other conditions; others are disorders in themselves. These factors often make differential diagnosis and treatment a challenge. This didactic atlas approaches the problem of migraine and other headaches from a visual perspective. The contents cover the history of migraine and headache, their epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. While the central emphasis is on migraine, all types of headache are addressed. The book includes some classic illustrations from historical texts as well as modern images that illustrate the disorders and current thinking. ... Read more
