5-0 out of 5 stars Headache
Absolutely outstanding book..and I am a Neurologist..

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best headache text yet!!
As a Physical Therapist specializing in Orthopaedics, I have treated headaches for 11 years. Raskin has created the most thorough yet understandable resource for diagnosis I've seen.He describes what to lookfor during evaluation in order to differenciate between types of headaches. He makes the subject understandable without watering down the complexity ofthe problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tough reading for a non-M.D., but EXTREMELY enlightening
This book was "prescribed" for me by my current neurologist during my first appointment. It's the hardest book I ever read all the way through.(My Ph.D. is in Computer Science.) I had a dictionary at my side the whole time. HOWEVER, I learned a whole lot more than I knew from 20 years of treatment for migraines: Varieties and mechanisms of headaches; Superstitions I'd picked up that weren't true; An immense variety of treatments, each of which is successful for some patients. Most treatments are not known to most doctors.E.g., Ergonovine Maleate, with which I have had good success, although only one pharmacy in my area will compound it. This is the book for serious sufferers of headache who are willing to learn more than their doctor probably knows, and then collaborate on their own treatment.Too bad it's out of print. WHERE'S THAT THIRD EDITION??? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Feverfew has helped many friends abate their headaches
I never knew how many friends suffered from migraines until I married a migraine sufferer. My friends strongly recommended this book, as in its turn it helped each of them get rid of migraines. My wife reluctantly started taking 2 capsules of dried commercial (Nature's Way, but YMMV) Feverfew a day, and it took several weeks to notice that her usual 2-3 headaches a week had become 1-2. After 2-3 months it was definate that her headaches were down to 2-3 a month, and of lesser duration and severity. Now she is at 2-3 a year, and if she notices the "flashes" early enough, she'll take a couple of capsules and often avoids a headache altogether.

This book is very practical in its coverage of the subject, though written by a "lay person" and not a medical practitioner or author. His research is well documented in footnotes, and frequently references Lancet, the British equivalent of the American Medical Association's JAMA. This book may help you or your loved ones get rid of their migraines, with a simple, inexpensive, safe, yet effective application of wild marigold leaf. ... Read more

Product Description

In the United States, eighteen percent of women, six percent of men, and four percent of children suffer from migraine headaches. All races are affected, although, for reasons which are unknown, whites are more likely than African Americans to be afflicted with the condition, and Asian Americans are least often migraine sufferers. Migraine is an inherited condition-many families can trace it back for generations-and it has enormous economic and social consequences, both to individual sufferers, and to the society as a whole. The cost to the U.S. society alone is in excess of $13 billion per year in lost productivity and in health care.

Understanding Migraine and Other Headaches provides up-to-date information on the causes and diagnoses, as well as current preventive measures, effective treatments, and surgical procedures. The book gives an overview of every major type of headache, including the debilitating, nausea-inducing forms of migraine, episodic tension-type headaches (the most common form), chronic daily headaches, and more obscure head-aches such as trigeminal neuralgia and cluster headaches.

This book is intended for those who are burdened by headaches as well as for their families, coworkers, employers, and friends. As such, it is written in a lucid and simple style that is accessible both to lay readers and medical professionals.

In the last two decades, revolutionary new migraine-specific medications have been developed. This book undertakes a comprehensive look at medications for acute "as needed" treatment of headaches and for preventing the onset of an attack. It offers guidelines for assessing headache pain, the level and type of medication needed, possible side effects, and drug effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will definitely understand migraines after reaidng this book!
This is an excellent book for anyone that suffers from chronic headaches. It will help you identify the different types of headache as well as how the headaches occur in the brain. He explains the different medications that are out there and how they work. There are also some natural remedies, such as magnesium and B2.It is written in an easy to understand format for the general public, so you won't have to be a doctor to understand this book. If you're having lots of headaches, definitely read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of headaches and migraine in particular
I am an otolaryngologist (aka ENT doctor) who sees a lot of patients with "sinus headache", most of whom have migraines.Although this book is presumably written for the lay person, and does a nice job for that audience, I have highly recommended this book to many doctors in training, and for physicians who see migraine patients, but may not have a lot of personal experience or professional experience with treating migraines. Its very readable, concise, and practical.I'm going to buy a couple of copies for my students to use while they are working with me!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best!
Anyone who experiences headaches and Migraines or knows someone who does needs some good books about headaches and Migraine in our libraries. This book is a quite worthy addition to anyone's library. 4-0 out of 5 stars Timely, accurate info- Nicely done, good price
... As a Clinical Massage Therapist I am always looking foraccurate information to pass on to my patients (at the Hospital) andclients (in my private practice).I have found all of the AmercanCollege books to be accurate and timely enough to have confidence whengiving them out that I am providing a good resource. If I did not, Icertainly would not recommend them here!

Why not 5 stars? For thesimple reason that the authors STILL are not taking into considerationthe massive amount of Medically proven information availableconcerning Massage Therapy when making recommendations for treatment. It may just be the fact that "when you live your life as ahammer, every problem looks like a nail", but with over 300medical journal articles written since Sep, 1997 touting thebeneficial effects of Massage Therapy for everything from chronic painto migraines to breast pain and the prevention of cancers, it seemsthat there would be SOME kind of mention of it in a book produced byThe American College of Physicians.

Aside from this one complaint, Ihave found this to be an EXCELLENT book and would recommend it foranyone with chronic headaches! ... Read more

Product Description
Christina Ferrare shocked the country-and herself!-when she revealed something very personal on her live talk show, Home and Family-that over the last few years she had experienced a lack of sexual desire. Her relevation prompted appearances on Oprah and Dateline NBC, and she began to hear from hundreds of women who described their own experiences and were glad to know that they were not alone.Based on information from her own doctors and other medical experts and authoritative sources, Okay, So I Don't Have a Headache helps women understand their own bodies and begin to find answers for themselves. Ferrare talks about nutrition, stress, and sexual desire, dealing with the symptoms of menopause and PMS, and how diet, exercise, and relaxation rituals work to keep the body in balance. The book also includes Ferrare's own recipes designed to help out-of-whack hormones.Amazon.com Review
Former model Christina Ferrare has been a familiar face on TVfor more than a decade, hosting and appearing on talk shows. Now she'sfamous for another reason: she bared all--in the emotional sense--onOprah® and in this book about the perimenopausal lack of sexual desirethat changed her from lusty wife (making love in every room, greetingher husband at the airport wearing only an overcoat and high heels) tothe mistress of avoidance maneuvers: "I have a headache/backache/wetnails." She shares her search for a solution to other perimenopausalsymptoms ("I had my first hot flash at Neiman-Marcus, andinitially I thought it was from seeing the bill from my purchases"),exploring changes that made her feel better outside the bedroom aswell. Ferrare doesn't hold back, confiding her PMS-fueled chocolaterituals (she stuffed as many as seven unwrapped peanut-butter cups inher bra and walked them by her husband). Eventually she gave up foodsthat weren't good for her, turned to whole foods and exercise, andbalanced her diet with herbs and vitamins. She decided againstsynthetic hormone replacement therapy in favor of naturalalternatives: soy, natural progesterone, and herbs. Testosterone creamhelped put the zing back in her sex drive. She wisely warns that sheis not a doctor and that the program she presents is what worked forher. Readers will need to consult a doctor who knows about alternativemedicine to find what will work for them--but she stresses thatthere is help out there. The book includes about 50 of her favoritehealthy recipes. --Joan Price ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Fire your ghost-writer (or keep your day job)
I couldn't stand her writing style. It was too chummy, too showy.

At the end, i really didn't have all that great of a message to take home. For a better understanding of the tumultous landscape of your hormones at certain times in your life, there are excellent books up there (for example, A Woman's Book of Life by Joan Borysenko). This one, written by a quasi-celebrity, didn't seem useful to me.

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought this would help
I bought this book because I thought it would help out my wife who wasn't feeling "in the mood" with me. Only I found out that not only did she not have a headache, but she still didn't want to fool around with me. Then she got angry at me for buying the book in the first place. Oh well, ya just can't win for losing.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Spend Your Money On This Drivel
This book has so little helpful information in it, that almost any woman could have written. What about the fabulous cream that she has touted for so long?We never learned much about that.
It makes me angry that I just made her a little richer with my hard earned dollars for no new information. One star isn't low enough!

Product Description
"Paula Kamen combines a sharp journalistic intelligence with a very welcome flair for the absurd."-Dave Eggers, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

At the age of twenty-four, Paula Kamen's life changed in an instant. While she was putting in her contacts, the left lens disturbed a constellation of nerves behind her eye. The pain was more piercing than that of any other headache she had ever experienced.

More than a decade later, she still has a headache-the exact same headache. From surgery to a battery of Botox injections to a dousing of Lithuanian holy water, from a mountain of pharmaceutical products to aromatherapy and even a vibrating hat, All in My Head chronicles the sometimes frightening, usually absurd, and always ineffective remedies Kamen-like so many others-tried in order to relieve the pain. Beleaguered and frustrated by doctors who, frustrated themselves, periodically declared her pain psychosomatic, she came to understand the plight of the millions who suffer chronic pain in its many forms. Full of self-deprecating humor and razorsharp reporting, All in My Head is the remarkable story of patience, acceptance, and perseverance in the face of terrifying pain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for chronic headache sufferers
I was 22 when I started getting daily chronic headaches - quite scary for someone that age (i'm now in my late 20s). This book helped put my mind to ease knowing that other people in this world have the same issue - and even deal with it the same way. From having to go through the ups and downs of going from doctor to doctor just because you want to know that it's nothing life-threatening and because you just want to get to the bottom of it ... to learning to deal with the headaches every minute of every day and getting on with your life. All in My Head is a great read; highly recommended to chronic headache sufferers.

4-0 out of 5 stars great book
lots of information, nice to read about someone else's head pain and what they have gone thru and that it mirrors your experiences and told with a sense of humor!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not alone!
As a chronic headache sufferer for 25 years, I was ecstatic to read a story so close to mine in so many ways. Not that I was glad someone else had to live this way, but knowing that I wasn't alone lifted me up. Chronic pain can be very isolating even with support from family and friends. There are also feelings of guilt, weakness and limitation; of living a life limited by pain. This book absolutely amazed me.I thought I was alone until I read my entire history of headache.Don't miss it if you've been struggling with chronic pain.Told with a sense of humor which makes a difficult topic a more enjoyable read.No self pity here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You, Paula!
Hi Paula,

I just finished your remarkable book, All In my Head. Thank you, thank you, thank you a zillion times for writing it. Pretty much everything you describe:your daily experience living with constant head, face, neck pain and your exhaustive (and exhausting) trials with doctors and quacks, endless experimentation with alternative medicine, every neurological drug known to mankind, the odd effectiveness of pseudoephedrine, running smack into the blame game. . . all of it, I've also lived with for the past 33 years. Yet somehow, functioning despite it all.

Your book jolted me, like seeing myself in the mirror and not expecting to. I found your words enormously comforting and soothing, seeing my life mirrored so eerily has been a magical balm for feeling isolated.

I loved your analogy about having a finite number of marbles everyday and having to "pay" with them. I could not have described it better.

You are a gifted writer--it can't be easy to pack so much humor in a topic that's so bleak.

Your work touched my heart and the planet is a better place for having you in it.

Thank you again, for putting one deliberate step in front of the other, one day at a time, which is what it surely must have taken for you to write a book of this magnitude. (I can identify because it was the "one step at a time" method that got me through high school, college, and grad school).

With Warmest Regards and Bushels of Gratitude,

Ranjan

p.s. The best way I know of to thank you as an author, is to buy your book, which I'm promptly about to do through Amazon! :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful advice
I have suffered for migraines for decades now, and tried many different therapies prescribed by various neurologists (anti-depressants, botox, anti-seizure medications, etc.)

When I came upon this book, I figured I had nothing to really lose. After all, the cost of the book is less than my co-pay to see a doctor - and doctors don't give money-back guarantees like Dr. Jones does with this book!

At first reading I was sure this book was written for me. He described my symptoms to a T. I had already read The Migraine Cure: How to Forever Banish the Curse of Migraines by Sergey A., M.D., Ph.D. Dzugan and Deborah Mitchel and was convinced that most of what we hear from doctors about migraines is wrong (diet, stress etc.). I was sure hormones were likely involved. Dr. Jones confirmed that.

He also laid out a relatively inexpensive treatment program consisting of three supplements (now five in the latest edition). I appreciated the fact that Dr. Jones was very specific about what works for most of the women he treats and insists that you didn't have to fly to Houston to see him...you can just try the program and find out if it works for you.

(By the way, that was the difference between his book and Dr. Dzugen's which was basically a sales pitch for his very expensive treatment program that you couldn't implement without his consultation.)

It worked for me. I have far fewer migraines than in the past, and feel better as well. However, I would add that it wasn't an overnight cure. In fact, it wasn't until he recently released an updated version that called for higher doses of the supplements along with Vitamin D and certain types of fish oil, that I really saw a significant and lasting decrease in the number of headaches. (In fact, one day I actually aborted a migraine using his recommendation for Vit. D and fish oil. That's never happened to me before without prescription medication.)

I am still getting a few migraines and experimenting to see if I can get down to none. I went 40 days without one recently - a record for me!

This book is very simple, straightforward, easy to read and to follow. Yes, you'll have to buy some supplements...and at least one is only available through the company he is affiliated with. I really don't mind. I had paid far more for solutions that didn't work. It's not terribly expensive, and it works.

I'd encourage women to read the book, and if what he talks about sounds right to you, try the treatment regiment. Stick with it for at least several months to give it a fair shot.

I'll also add that I emailed his office and got a fast and personalized response to my question.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book contains good information and is written using understandable language. However, it is badly edited (repetitive). It is a small book, even with the repeated information to plump it up. All things considered, I would say it is overpriced. Perhaps buy it as an electronic book instead... But, if you're a woman suffering from migraines, it is worth a read. The information is helful. I am glad I spent the money- I am just annoyed that such a tiny book could cost so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes a few weeks then WORKS LIKE A CHARM !
Dr. Jones is one of those rare MD's who's willing to tell you the TRUTH. He isn't "in bed" with the pharmaceutical industry, like most physicians are. It makes me sad that so many women are taking prescription drugs when they don't need to. They're treating the SYMPTOMS instead of fixing the underlying problem. I found Dr. Jones hormone regimen to be very effective and it makes perfect sense as to WHY it works. I immediately began to feel better (within 48 hours), then it took about 3 weeks for my migraines to completely disappear. They've been gone now for 7 months and more importantly, my energy and zest for life has returned, FULL FORCE. Bio-identical hormones, to me, are a miracle. I now take iodine for my thyroid, a little magnesium, and bioidentical estrogen and progesterone (as does Oprah Winfrey and Robin McGraw (Dr. Phils wife) - see the February edition of O Magazine). I've also learned to eat "Alkaline" which I also believe is beneficial (great book on this is "The Acid - Alkaline Food Guide" by Dr. Susan Brown). As well, a large Swedish study of over 28,000 women has shown that bioidentical hormones actually protect women against cancer and heart disease. Why would anyone take horse derived Premarin, when they could take a molecule that's exactly the same as the hormone your body naturally produces? Premarin contributes to cancer because your body cannot recognize this molecule. There's some GREAT information about bioidentical hormones on the YouTube videos. Have a look. I read the other review saying that the "company cannot be reached" however I've had no problem contacting them. People also have to understand that he and his company must get a great many emails and unless you have some huge staff, it's not always possible to answer every personal health question. All I can say is "THANK YOU, THANK YOU Dr. JONES ... you're literally a life saver!

5-0 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!!!!
The advice the Doctor tells you in this book WORKS!He also wrote a book about PMS and the advice given in that book WORKS as well.I won't tell you what he says to do just believe me when I say it does work.It isn't fair to him if I tell you what to buy..... he wrote the book he deserves the credit for the cure. The cost of the book is nothing since what he tells you to do really WORKS!!!!My daughter uses the vitamins he recommends for PMS and she has changed. She no longer suffers from PMS.The vitamins he recommends for migraines made mine disappear.Dr. Andrew Jones is amazing.....

1-0 out of 5 stars No Luck Here....
I get apprx. 3 severe migraines per month that each last 1 to 3 days. I bought the book and then the recommended products. I have tried the recommended treatment for two months (maybe a little longer). There has been absolutely no improvement to my migraines. I'll finish up the last of the progesterone, but I seriously doubt I'll buy more to give it more time to work. I feel like this is probably a scam, but I suppose you never know what will work for one person yet not another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Headache in the Pelvis
This is ABSOLUTELY the most ACCURATE book I have ever read, and I have never done a review of a book before, but I just have to on this one.I asked my daughter to order it for me and she did.I haven't quite finished reading it yet (still in the process), but it is soooo true.I am so excited about the results of the exercises in this book that I just had to do this review of it.I have been having lots of trouble with my bowels not working since I was in a wreck a little over 15 years ago from which I found out later that I had a blood clot in the groin area and now have Lupus, cirrhosis, and diabetes. My intestines only worked from once to twice a week for the past four to five years. With these exercises (and I've only done them for one month now) my bowels are moving every day. This is AMAZING for me because I have tried everything before, and nothing worked.I have been from doctor to doctor trying to get help.I am soooo thankful to the kind doctors that took their precious time to write this book!I don't know them, but they deserve a great reward for this.I'm just soooo AMAZED at the exercises, and what they say about getting the blood supply to the muscles is so true! Thanks again to all that took the time to write such an accurate book.WOW

3-0 out of 5 stars Just to be honest...
After reading the previous 'review' I have to be very skeptical of it.

The fact that the book was released in February and the reviewer states "It is now 2 1/2 years after I first started to practice..." means that they are not reviewing the book, but the book writer and his practices.I would almost think that the person has a vested interest in the success of the book.

I may buy it yet, since I have only recently realized that I have prostatitis.I will listen to my physician's recommendations first, then look to alternative therapies, usually under the supervision of my physician. If you find that you are not comfortable enough to do the same, then I would suggest that you get a new physician, until you find one that will not only be responsible, but listen to your thoughts also.I fired 4 physicians before I found the one that I currently have, you can too.Doctors aren't gods, they need your business, not the other way around.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works
I experienced pain above my groin and in the pelvis/abdomen for about four years before it was successfully controlled--mostly elminated--by learning the techniques from these authors. My pain was a dull ache, and the pain would worsen if I had to stand or walk for a long time (e.g. a movie theater line or walking in a shopping mall). Three urologists in 4 years could not find the reason for the pain, but it persisted. I also endured uncomfortable invasive medical procedures and bouts of powerful antibiotics, all without being healed. Finally, a urologist who had heard a research paper being delivered by one of the book's authors at a medical conference referred me to them at Stanford Urology. After beginning their progressive/deep relaxation protocol and physical therapy, my symptoms were reduced in intensity by 90%-100% (becaming mild, occasional episodes rather than chronic and painful). The best part of it: no drugs, no fancy medical procedures or spooky side effects. Actually knowing how to heal the problem elminated the tremendous emotional and mental burden of having the previously mysterious pain; I could control it--and even eliminate it. This is not the quick-fix; it takes time and discipline, probably for a lifetime.

5-0 out of 5 stars the techniques in this book healed me completely
I suffered from prostatitis/CPPS for 3 years and my life became absolutely miserable. I received 4 different diagnoses from 4 urologists, tried over 20 prescription medications, vitamins and herbs and underwent several very uncomfortable and expensive procedures, all of which did hardly anything to help my symptoms which had slowly increased in intensity over time (sound familiar?) Eventually I met one of the authors of this book, David Wise, and he taught me the techniques described in the book. Slowly I began to heal myself, without any medication. Six months later my symptoms were diminished significantly and nine months later I felt I was healed. It is now 2 1/2 years after I first started to practice these methods and I feel that I have been freed of this horrific condition. I cannot recommend this book highly enough for those who are still suffering. There are many schools of thought regarding this syndrome and I studied all of them obsessively at one time. I feel very strongly that over the coming years the ideas in this book will eclipse the other models of this disease and come to be recognized as the most powerful methods for dealing with it as more and more people are seen to have solid and long-lasting benefits. Mine is not the last testimonial you will see. I should say however that it is not a simple or quick solution and it requires a lot of devotion, but chances are the end-result will be your freedom. Best of luck, do not abandon hope until you have given these methods your most sincere effort. ... Read more
