5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource!
This book is a must-have for any communication science undergrad or speech-language pathology graduate student! I am currently in my final year of grad school, completing my first internship; and, I sure wish I'd had this during the past few years of coursework. I will definitely be using it as a reference during the rest of my internship and CFY. It will also be very helpful to use whilestudying for the PRAXIS. The book contains definitions, black and white diagrams, as well as very useful reference charts and tables in the back. Well-worth the money!

".....Speech, Language, and Hearing are fields of never-ending research.
NEW AREAS HAVE BEEN EXPLORED,

It became imperative that we publish a fourth edition if we were to continue our original purpose to

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Live Without It (but using 4th edition)
This was the first book I ever purchased in SLP. My prof instructed us to buy for building our professional library. At the time, I thought THANKS A LOT. I thought I had just wasted money on a book I didn't need for the class. Since that time, I have used this book for countless term papers, clinical reports, cross referencing more difficult texts, and looking up spellings regularly. My addition has several developmental charts and testing indexes. My only complaint is that the more medicaly based terminology is missing(ie: the anatomical structures are realy just the greatest hits of the larynx and brain, and I am a bit lost when it comes to none SLP or AUD measures at the hospital rotations). I hope this has been improved for the new edition, but at the same time would hate it to become to cumbersome to use. I am nearing the end of my Masters' and coming up on the Praxis exam. I intend to use this as a way to study across several topics in the field. All in all a GREAT REFERENCE! ... Read more

Product Description
Hearing: Anatomy, Physiology and Disorders of the Auditory System provides detailed information about the anatomy and physiology of the entire auditory system and it describes important aspects of disorders of the middle ear, the cochlea, and the nervous system in a comprehensive manner. Most other textbooks on Hearing are focused on either the periphery or the central nervous system and rarely integrate anatomy and physiology with clinical issues. In the past years, it has become apparent that pathologies of the peripheral parts of the auditory system affect the function of the nervous system, and vice versa. It is thus more and more important to view the peripheral and central parts of the auditory system in an integrative way. This book integrates descriptions of disorders of the ear and the nervous system and provides a comprehensive coverage of anatomy and physiology of the entire auditory system. The book introduces the role of neural plasticity in the symptoms of disorders such as tinnitus, hyperacusis and phonophobia. A separate chapter discusses cochlear and auditory brainstem implants.

· This book provides a thorough understanding of the anatomy and function of the auditory system
· Provides thorough information on the peripheral nervous system and auditory organs as well as the central nervous system
· As valuable for students of and reasearchers in basic sciences (biology, psychology, neuroscience, audiology etc) as for clinicians
· Offers an introduction into psychoacoustics and physical acoustics
· Presents information on important disorders of the auditory system (including Tinnitus,

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have hearing loss, read this book.
Anyone with hearing loss will identify with the content of David Myer's book. Very inspirational!

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable book
This book is very nice and a valuable source. However, there are some things you ought to know before buying it.

The book is very subjective in the sense that it is written in diary form. The author basically tells you about his experiences with hearing loss. Fortunately, he does have insightful comments with regard to hearing loss.

This book both made me sad and happy at the same time.

The account of this guy made me very happy that there are others out there who do understand what I'm going through, like I'm not alone or just antisocial. Deaf IS an important issue when communicating and relating to others.

Sad because for the first time I fully realized how real this is for me. I just can't keep ignoring it. I need to understand that there are things I must do to become more functional out there as a hard of hearing person.

Why 4 stars?

Well, the book isn't exactally written by a professional advisor on hearing issues. He is a psychologist who happened to be hard of hearing. And as far as I know he does not have a speciallity in hearing therapy or such. What I'm saying is that you should read the book as a valuable testimony from someone's experience, not as a professional help source.

It is important to have this kind of book, because there are people who need to know there are others going through similar experiences. Yet, it is very important you understand this is still a very subjective book.

He also mentions that he is a teacher and all the big time problems he has in his class and conferences. It sure most be hell for him, still what about people who hadn't even had an education to teach and who need to work in even way more demanding (for the hearing impaired) workplaces because they had not had other choices.

Again, the book is good, but keep in mind it is just the very personal account and not a professional source to help you overcome deaf or hard of hearing problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book has so much to offer for the hearing-impaired and their families.I almost skipped over it because it is the author's story of losing his hearing as an adult. My son was diagnosed at age 4 1/2.I am so glad that I decided to read it!Myers offers a wealth of technical information along with an impressive list of internet resources.Perhaps the most important aspect of the book is the emotional insight in dealing with hearing loss.I definitely learned to be more patient with my son after reading this book. I visited the author's website and emailed him about his helpful book.He even emailed back with more suggestions for my son!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Heart-Felt, Exquisitely Written Piece!
If you have loss of hearing, the prose and memoirs by Dr. Myers will be profoundly familiar. You will find yourself sitting and listening to this friend as he shares secrets you seldom discuss with anyone. The author offers rich experiences in roller coaster rides of emotion. He is insightful, humorous, sensitive, revealing, encouraging--and often painfully honest. You feel his torment and elation, and through it, not only come to know the author, but clearly more about living with hearing loss.

An excellent recommendation for those with hearing loss, and professionals who desire to learn more about the experience.

Dr. Myers leaves you anxiously waiting for his next book. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Exploring hearing loss
This book is wonderful and useful in a variety of ways. It deserves all of the praise it has earned. The chapter "Aids and Advice" contains a helpful subsection, "Advice for Friends and Family Members" that is invaluable. Tips such as "invite us to a quiet place," "get our attention," "face the light and face us," "rephrase," "create a context," and "speak slowly" are essential for successful communication with people with hearing loss since, for many people with hearing loss, lip-reading is necessary or at least desirable.

Wearers of hearing aidsbecome particularly vexed by, for example, noisy restuarants. This is because most hearing aids still amplify all sounds without prejudice - the words you want to hear (the signal) along with the crash of dishes three tables away (the noise). Add curtainless windows, uncarpeted floors, background music, and ever-increasing decibel level of voices competing to be heard, and you get a very noisy place. Myers explains this in good detail. He then shares his wonderful fantasy : respite from the "noisy world" of most restaurants and coffee shops via a chain of acoustically thought-out tea rooms and coffeehouses named "A Quiet Place."He quotes various studies and surveys that have shown that a great many restaurant patrons object to excessive noise.

Myers offers some great trivia, such as the fact that umpires' hand signals were invented in 1892 by William Hoy, the major leagues' first deaf player. In addition, Myers cites the works and writings of others (whom he names) - Oliver Sacks, linguist William Stokoe, Alexander Graham Bell, for example - leading his reader further into this interesting field, should one wish to read on. He also mentions, though not in much detail, some current research and developments, using lay person's terms. There is an appendix of resources for the hard of hearing, and an index. No bibliography, unfortunately.

A great book and thoroughly worthwhile. ... Read more

My daughter, almost 3 years, has been profoundly deaf since birth. She has bilateral Cochlear Implants and we are so grateful for how far the Lord has brought technology! I just got a copy of this book when my daughter was two and a half. It would have been THE perfect book to read when we found out my daughter was deaf. The author, Debby Waldman, encompasses the emotions perfectly that a parent goes through upon diagnosis of their child's hearing loss, because she herself has a daughter with hearing loss. With her knowledge and personal experience, combined with the professional and medical experience of her co-author, Dr. Jackson Roush, this is a MUST-READ for any parent whether they have recently found out about their childs' hearing loss or have journeyed with it for 20 years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellence!
The book is great, the information valuable, and for the person who sent it to me excellent service with getting it to me so quickly!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Professors, please, please do not assign this book for your students.I'm currently using it for a pediatric audiology class, and I've been disappointed.

I have two major criticisms of this book:

1.It is poorly formatted. It's true that it has headings and some bulleted lists, but they generally are not helpful. There are no bold terms, as are seen in most texts. The index is great, but there is no glossary. The fonts and paragraph style are dense and hard to access.I'm a senior with a 4.0 GPA:I know textbooks.

2.The authors do not include a wide range of studies; they include the ones that support their opinions.Additionally, many of the studies cited are from the 1960s and 1970s, which is practically the Stone Age for a technology-heavy field like audiology. The graphics look similarly dated. This is a fifth edition (2002)--perhaps much of the book reflects the original edition?

I normally keep the textbooks for my major classes, knowing that I'll need them for reference when I am a professional; however, I'm looking forward to selling this one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars outdated book
I had seen and examined this book at a retailer of hearing aids, CostCo, so I ordered my own copy. The book I got, in a timely fashion, fair price, good condition, was outdated, 5 years old.Hearing aid technology is changing fast, and selecting aids on the basis of 5-year-old consumer's review is of little help.(could you buy a new flat screen HD TV based on a review of TV's five years ago?)Had I known its publication date, I would havelooked further.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information about hearing loss
Like most people, as you get older your hearing gets worse and worse but you place the blame on the movie makers or the failure of people not speaking loud enough. This book gives excellent information and advise on hearing loss. Some of the information on hearing aids is a little dated but you can find that with a little research on the internet. My new hearing aids from America Hears are fantastic.I can even hear the birds chirping again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Hear it for this Book!
What a book this is. When I found out that I was going to need hearing aids I was thrilled and scared to death. How was this really going to change my life? Well this book (both editions) helped ease my fears. With the group of experts that the author brings together many questions are answered and one realizes that they are not alone. One thing that I found was that although the second edition was improved, some of the articles in the first edition that were deleted from the second was very helpful also; Great book(s)!

I am seeking a dual certification in Special Education/General Education with a Middle School Endorsement in Science and Social Studies. This text is one of the better ones I have seen-The information is first and foremost arranged in a brain friendly manner. The companion website is VERY helpful. I have been using the powerpoints on the companion website to help guide my reading and I print them out in the outline format.
This way I can pick out the main ideas in each chapter and unit and they act as a study guide. i like the flashcard and memory games that are also available. The quizzes are awesome, because the questions are always different. My first Unit Exam is Tuesday, so we'll see if these study methods/practices are working-however I actually feel pretty confident-there are a lot of vocabulary words, but the text does a great job of not using an overwhelming amount of professional jargon-I will be keeping this text to add to my professional resource library. I would recommend this text for any educator who is learning about the Response to Intervention Process as well as general and special educators-pre-service and practicing. It helps identify the physiological and psychological etiologies of speech and language development and provides typical developmental milestones in a progressive and systematic deliniation. 1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in quality of book
This book was required for a class that I am taking as I pursue my clinical doctorate in audiology. When I received the book, I was extremely disappointed in the quality of the book given the price. It is a thirteen-year-old paperback third edition, and the cost was $109.The pictures and diagrams were of such poor quality that I could barely discern what was there.I realize that this is not the fault of Amazon.com, but rather an issue to be taken up with the publisher.I returned the book to Amazon and borrowed a third edition in hardback from a faculty member at my university. I would advise anyone who needs this book to try to find a hardback edition to purchase or borrow.

Of course I have great respect for Dr. Jerry Northern. However, the content of the book is more suitable for an undergraduate or entry level class.Hopefully in the near future there will be a suitable book in medical audiology for those at the graduate level.

1-0 out of 5 stars NEVER RECIEVED THIS BOOK
I contacted the bookseller, and they simply said they had already shipped this book.I ordered the book in early January of 2007 for my college semester of January to May 2007.The book is very detailed, and was required for one of my college classes that semester. When I never recieved it, I had to keep borrowing a copy from my campus library.I was EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the way in which this matter was handled, as I was NEVER even given a refund on the price I had paid for this book. ...
