1-0 out of 5 stars Cardiac Cookbook needs to be updated to meet new AHA guidelines
This book was so out of cardiac integrity in the recipe contents that I couldn't even pass the book on.I tore out recipes that I could modify to come more in line with American Heart Association's recommended Mediterranian diet guidelines.Cardiac recovery is truly a matter of life and death to those of us given second chances. This means those who give advice in any way about it need to be as authentic as possible. Those who write recipes need to be responsible in considering the whole picture of cardiac: low carbs, low fat, low sodium and little beef. I recommend Joe Piscatella's book "The Road To A Healthy Heart Runs Through The Kitchen". Great information and tasty and healthy recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars cardiac cookbook

5-0 out of 5 stars Gift rating - parent's liked it.
I bought this book as a gift for my parents-- my father recently having had a valve replacement unexpectedly. They have found the cookbook useful, easy, and worthwhile. They certainly don't fit in the "leisure time chef" category but found the cookbook useful and enjoyable.

Eating food that's good for you can be quite frustrating if you haven't learned to be and cook healthy your entire life. This helped.

Product Description
The Widow-Maker Heart attack at age 48 was written by a "miracle" survivor of a massive heart attack. He provides hope and a pathway to recovery for other heart attack patients and their loved ones facing the same daunting life changing, unexpected experience. His entire first year of life after suffering his heart attack; actually dying six times, is chronicled in this book combined with his ever changing physical and psychological feelings. In writing this book it was the author's goal to help other families and loved ones facing the same devastating unfamiliar territory as his family faced on March 31, 2008. His goal was to provide timeless support for the loved ones of the heart attack victim so that they might better be able to understand what the patient is going through and what they, as loved ones might do to help the heart attack victim better deal with their life changing experience. The genuine and heartfelt desire on the part of the author to provide insight to the heart attack patient in their post heart attack life is profound and dynamic as they too successfully recover. The book provides much needed insight into critical topics that become part of the day to day lives of heart attack victims. The author laments about the mental side of first symptoms of actually experiencing a heart attack, emergency room feelings, mental challenges associated with dying, physical and emotional thoughts of waking up in the ICU, first day emotional panic, first night death feelings, prescription drugs, family support, cardio rehab, physical and physiological ups and downs, "Mount Everest moments", and stress prevalent in the first year of recovery. This book should be provided to every heart attack patient families or victim in the hospital, cardiovascular specialists and educators of heart attack health. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars More substance please!
For those looking for a pat on the back after surviving their heart attack, this book may suffice. Those wanting concrete steps to change your life--look elsewhere. This book's author talks too much about himself, which is fine, if he ever applied his personal examples to the broader picture so others might benefit.I do not recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Husband Read From Cover to Cover
My husband is recovering from a recent major heart attack. He couldn't put this book down.It is very inspirational and informational for anyone faced with such a life alternating traumatic episode.Excellent for family members to read as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars blahhhhh book
I was really disappointed with this book. The author seemed to build himself up on his website but that turns out to be only self-promotion and has little basis of truth. Many other books out there, get the job done a whole lot better. Keep looking before you buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much emotion, not enough facts...
I expected this book to have advice on how to mangage your risk factors after a cardiac event -- What I got was a "self help" book that rambled on about the series of emotions you may experience and how to deal with them. It was a lot of "touchy-feely," without any good solid advice on how to handle the physical situation your body is in. This was exacerbated by a maudlin tone and what I felt were cheesy and poorly written personal anecdotes.

Other books I purchased did a great job at addressing the serious issues of depression, anxiety and stress management while still providing excellent advice and education on medications, health care, exercise, diet, and other "key levers" to maintaining cardiac health after a serious cardiac event. As alternatives to this book, I would highly recommend both "Take a Load Off Your Heart: 109 Things You Can Actually Do to Prevent, Halt and Reverse Heart Disease," and "The Cardiac Recovery Handbook: The Complete Guide to Life After Heart Attack or Heart Surgery."

Hope this is helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a Chicken Soup Book
This book is not what I was looking for.Guess I should have read the reviews.I am not saying it is not a good book.I was looking for more than a feel good book. Being a heart attack survivor myself and only being 45 years old I was looking for a book on what it feels like to actually survive a heart attack. If you like the Chicken Soup books and want a feel good book I would recommend this book.If you or a loved one has survived a heart attack and want to read from someone who has been there.I would recommend "An Arrow Through the Heart". ... Product Description
In Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks, But People Do,Matthias Rath, M.D., an internationally respected cardiovascularresearcher, asserts that high cholesterol is not the actual cause ofheart disease. Bears, for example, have average cholesterol levels of400 milligrams per deciliter of blood, but they don’t suffer heartattacks. Why? According to Dr. Rath, it is because bears produce largeamounts of vitamin C, which optimizes collagen production and ensuresmaximum stability of their artery walls.

Dr. Rath’s research identifies the true cause of heart disease as a deficiency of vitamin C and other essential nutrients in the cells composing the heart and coronary arteries – not high cholesterol. Once the artery wall is weakened by vitamin deficiency, the body responds by producing excess cholesterol in the liver and depositing it in the injured artery. If this process continues without nutritional intervention, the buildup of fats in the arteries will eventually lead to atherosclerosis, the cause of heart attacks.

Using easy-to-understand language, Dr. Rath explains what the reader can do to prevent heart attacks and other cardiovascular conditions naturally. He presents his ten-step program for achieving natural cardiovascular health, as well as his clinically proven Cellular Health nutrient recommendations for preventing and improving heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart failure, arrhythmia, diabetes and other conditions. Dr. Rath even provides clinical proof – complete with the Ultrafast CT scans of patient’s arteries – of the natural reversal of atherosclerotic deposits, without angioplasty or bypass surgery.

This revised edition of Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks, But People Do! has been updated with new research findings that corroborate Dr. Rath’s vitamin C deficiency-heart disease discovery, his cardiovascular presentation at Stanford Medical School, and information about the recent efforts of the pharmaceutical industry to suppress his medical breakthrough. Dr. Rath also exposes the pharmaceutical industry’s profit motives for pushing statin drugs, which do not target the true cause of heart disease and have dangerous side effects.

Why Animals Don’t Get Heart Attacks, But People Do! is the blueprint for a new health care system based on the needs ofpatients, not profits from statin drug sales. The information contained on its pages will empower readers to take control of their cardiovascular health and end their dependency on pharmaceutical drugs.

About the Author
Matthias Rath, M.D. is an internationally respected cardiovascular researcher who worked closely with the late two-time Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling, Ph.D. Dr. Rath was appointed by Pauling as the first director of cardiovascular research at the Linus Pauling Institute, formerly located in California.

The author of four bestselling health books, Dr. Rath developed the scientific concept of Cellular Medicine, which defines the deficiency of nutrients at the cellular level as a root cause of chronic diseases. His research has been published in numerous scientific journals, including the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the Journal of Orthomolecular Medicine and the Journal of Applied Nutrition ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read
This is a very interesting book and well worth reading if you can get your hands on a copy.

It isn't an essential vitamin C book/article like some of the big general ones, such as:

Clinical Guide to the Use of Vitamin C The Clinical Experiences of Frederick R. Klenner, M.D.
Ascorbate: The Science of Vitamin C by Dr. Hickey and Dr. Roberts
The Healing Factor: Vitamin C Against Disease by Irwin Stone
VITAMIN C, TITRATING TO BOWEL TOLERANCE, ANASCORBEMIA, AND ACUTE INDUCED SCURVY Robert F. Cathcart, III, M.D.
The Ascorbate Effect in Infectious and Autoimmune Diseases by Robert F. Cathcart, M.D.
VITAMIN C: The Real Story by Steve Hickey, PhD and Andrew Saul

But it is still a very good book with an intriguing premise.

The importance of vitamin C for M.E. patients, as well as those with other serious diseases, cannot be overstated.

Jodi Bassett, The Hummingbirds' Foundation for M.E.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Rath's strategy for lowering the risk and effects of heart disease
This book is a wonderful adjunct for people who have been told they have heart disease, hypertension or diabetes. It gives the reader a guidepath for strenghtening the heart and even reversing existing heart disease using well-known vitamins, minerals and supplements. Mathias Rath, M.D. believes that heart disease can be prevented and reversed by following his program developed over many years of research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - worth buying!
Received the book well before specified time & in great condition!
Has a lot of good information! Thanks!

2-0 out of 5 stars not very informative
Not a very informative book about the actual science of supplementing to avoid nutrient deficiency - more a blanket statement that it's a good idea. It's written mainly in short-section bullet-point style. It is unrelenting in letting you know that Dr Rath is a great medical revolutionary.I was surprised to come across a section on the benefits of Vitamin C for diabetes, so I googled the topic and immediately came across a study where vitamin C had a negative effect for diabetics - at odds with the glowing recommendation of vitamin C for diabetics in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Rath is Changing the Face of Healthcare as we Know it!
I must applaud Dr. Rath as a progressive, cutting-edge health pioneer and consumer advocate! This book on heart disease is truly a gem, as far as cellular health and nutrition are concerned. This book provides powerful insight into the "real" underlying mechanisms of heart disease and how to be proactive in the prevention of this disease. Dr. Rath is a true champion of information that has taken investigative journalism to another level in order to expose the unethical and corrupt practices of many health industry giants. It is obvious throughout Dr. Rath's work, empowering the public through knowledge is his number-one priority. He has made it his mission to expose the erroneous and perpetually publicized corporate propaganda concerning health and medicine. I encourage readers to support his remarkable efforts to change the face of healthcare as we know it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
Dr. Barnes' book is vital reading for anyone. Although written many years ago, his research remains timely. The text is clear and concise so it is easy for the layperson to understand. For over 20 years I struggled with hypothyroidism because, using traditional testing methods, the results showed my thyroid function was within "normal range" despite the fact that a doctor had surgically removed most of my thyroid. Following Dr. Barnes' recommendations, as outlined in this book, my health has improved dramatically!

Product Description
Heart attacks are preventable—fatalities from heart attacks shouldbe virtually unheard of—and heart disease can be controlled, possibly even reversed, says renowned researcher and cardiologistH. Robert Superko, M.D. In his groundbreaking work, Before theHeart Attacks, Dr. Superko for the first time outlines hisinnovative program to the public, including:

• Information about new blood tests that predict true risk of heart attack.
• Dr. Superko’s Personal Risk Self-Assessment quiz
• Individualized diet and exercise program as well as an assessment of supplements.

The Plume edition includes a new afterword focusing on the latest developments in non-invasive testing, the most recent advanced hormone replacement therapy, genetics, and complementary medicine.Amazon.com Review
In this lucid and revolutionary book, cardiologist Robert Superko counsels readers about how to outwit their genes by identifying "metabolic markers" that predict future heart attacks. "To make a preemptive strike, you have to know which factors are putting you in harm’s way," he explains. So rather than focusing on cholesterol count, Superko outlines a patient-doctor partnership to create a personal risk profile he calls a "cardiac fingerprint." Here’s the drill: Through a detailed self-assessment, patients identify a series of risk factors (family history, age, physical traits, medical conditions). If the risk profile is high, the next step is a physician- ordered blood test to identify metabolic markers (for example, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen and lipoprotein) that indicate high risk for heart attack. Depending on the results, tests such as a carotid or intra-vascular ultrasound can pinpoint heart disease. With this data in hand, Dr. Superko is convinced that patients have the power to change their cardiac destiny. For each significant risk, he suggests prescriptive keys in diet, activity level, nutrition and medication. With writer Laura Tucker, Dr. Superko demystifies complex issues about heart health. His ideas are compelling and optimistic—he believes in a future when every heart attack will be an anomaly. The only challenge may be persuading your cholesterol counting doctor. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DNA Approach to a Healthy Heart
This book is a must read for anyone that wants to understand the new approach to dealing with heart disease.DNA analysis for an individual determines the genotype catagory for that individual.Your genotype establishes your risk for a heart attack, and sets the proper treatment with respect to diet, prescription drugs, exercise, and the correct life-stile for you.

"Before the Heart Attacks" is now out of print, but used copies are available through Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before the heart attacks
Had recently done the Berkeley Blood Test to determine heart attack risks. Was told by my Dr. to get this book and it is an easy read. Very informative, kind of like a horoscope for your body since they took the test and can tell you so much about your body and you can look up the results in the book. Tells you what food and exercise work best for your gene type. Pieces to your puzzle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This was a curiosity read.I don't know enough about the topic to judge the merits of the book. Some of the detail is common knowledge, eating, health, etc.

Some of it is new(to me).The topic of liboproteins is rather in depth and kind of made my mind wander.

The self assessment and footprints might alarm many people. But it's problem something most need to see.

I found the vitamin and fish oil discussions to be interesting as I didn't know about such things.

The discussions on food was helpful as some things you would think are harmless are not.

If you are concerned about your heart, this is a great book for getting an understanding of such things. If you have coronary disease, this book is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before the Heart Attacks
My cardiac surgeon gave me a copy of this book as I lay in the recovery room following my heart attack, catheterization and stent placement. Now I have sent it to two of my adult children, and will send it to the other two. This is a difficult read for a layperson, but is the clearest description of the connection between genetics, lifestyle, food, and drink. This is a must for anyone who wishes to fully understand and be proactive about one's own health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this even if they think they're not at risk
Seven out of ten people who drop dead of a heart attack have a normal standard lipid profile (LDL, HDL, Triglycerides, Total Cholesterol).Clearly there are elements in the blood that are not being measured.Dr. Superko clearly explains what these elements are and how to get them measured and why.I am 37 years old and just had my first Berkeley Heart Labs test done.I can't wait for the results so that I can be as aware as possible about my risk for cardiovascular disease.Knowledge, awareness, action and prevention are the keys to a long, healthy life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Can Save Your Life
This is a truly amazing book. It gives you so much information complete with facts to back it up.
I've had this book for years, but I still go back to it for information.
If you buy any book for your heart and how to keep it healthy, I would definitely pick this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent and informative read.
Thank you Doctor Wilde for compiling this informative read, for the average layman, the many things to watch for when it comes to monitoring ones own health. This is a must read for most adults.

4-0 out of 5 stars p. 367 regarding transfats are found in coconut and palm oils
I have heard this author several times on the Art Bell show. I decided to buy the book, but am wondering about this statement on p. 367:
"The advice from the professionals is to definitely try to eliminate trans fats that are found in great amounts in coconut and palm oils.Be aware of them on labels and shun products with the killer phrase, "partially hydrogenated," particularly if the words appear amonth the first few entrants listed.

I was never under the impression or had knowledge that coconut oil and palm oil were/are trans fats.

I see no place, looking thru the index, where it is shown differently.

Otherwise, there seems to be some good advice in this book.I stand corrected if I am wrong about coconut oil and/or palm oil. (We use only organic oil.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Hidden Causes
I am aware of the benefit of drugs in treatment of Heart Disease as my husband is using them after having a stent placed in his heart. They are of great benefit for him.It was, however, difficult to get past the early chapters touting drugs as the best solution for prevention even for children.Don't give up, as he has some good advice in the later chapters of the book and recommends supplements that even many Heart Doctors fail to recommend to their patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars We CAN know more than most doctors!
This book is magnificent. It is easy to understand because it is not exclusively directed towards scientists. It provides detailed descriptions about new research that most doctors are not aware about yet as they are caught up in traditional methods to treat heart disease. It empowers those concerned about their cardiovascular health as it provides clear ways to avoid important risk factors. The choice of reading it is rewarding.
I am doing heart research at Winthrop University, and since heart disease runs in my family, I am interested to find out why so many of my ancestors suddenly died from a heart attack. If they come out with a new edition of this book I won't hesitate to read it.

Product Description
Bruce Johnson, the author, is a heart attack survivor and he wants to get the word out. While much has been written about the medical side of heart attacks, little has been written about the emotional and human side of heart attacks and cardiovascular disease.

It really doesn't matter what sparks the sudden Coronary Thrombosis (MI), the medical term for a heart attack. This disease is an equal opportunity killer. Men, women, young, old, rich, poor, famous and people who aren't known outside of their families and workplaces! Dead is dead and by most accounts the one million people who will have heart attacks this year might have been spared had they made a few lifestyle changes. That's what the country's cardiologists are begging for today.

The author interviewed dozens of candidates but he wanted a diverse group of heart attack survivors who represented a cross section of America. He found them and in some cases, they heard about his project and found him. These are their stories of regaining life after a heart attack! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Touched my heart!
I just finished reading this book and have to say that I was thoroughly impressed. Bruce Johnson not only opened the door to discuss the emotional side of surviving a heart attack, but provided a platform for 11 other heart attack survivors to tell their story of triumph. A quick read, and a true page turner, I devoured this book in only a short time, though the story will stay with me forever, which is why I felt compelled to write something. This book gives you the inner, most personal thoughts of the victims... you empathize with their pain, feel their struggle, and share in their triumph. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a rough patch in life, regardless of the circumstances. It is truly inspiring and uplifting. A book, not just for those who can relate to heart attacks, but for anyone who has had to struggle... this is a true story of survival. Brilliant!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Be A Heart Attack Survivor To Enjoy This Book
When I first opened Heart to Heart I didn't know what to expect.I'm not a heart attack survivor.I know one person who's had a heart attack. It is highly unlikely that I'll have a heart attack in the near future. So how does one relate to a book that is all about heart attacks and survivors with no personal connection?Very easily, I found.

Bruce's writing style creates an intimate atmosphere which he allows the reader to enter. When reading the book I didn't feel like an outsider looking into a moment in time; I felt like I was a part of that moment.I laughed out loud at the humor, cringed during the painful times, and sighed in relief when things got better.I also found myself wondering, "How is he or she doing now?"

The book had a natural flow.I was carried from one story to another without feeling like I'd missed something.Bruce does an excellent job of explaining all the medical jargon, without it bogging down your brain.

The people in the book were very diverse in their living styles, economic classes, and their family/support structures and I think that set Bruce's book apart from others The variety of people that Bruce interviewed set a good pace for the book.It wasn't the same story being told using slightly different words. Each time it was a different person, a different story, a different perspective, a different outcome. Each person's story had its own unique flair, but the central theme was always there; heart attacks can happen to anyone.

The book also is also very informative because it shows what the warning signs are for heart attacks. It also gives useful advice for recovering patients from both patient and doctor perspectives.

One of my favorite highlights of the book was learning about Bruce's personal history and story. His story is an inspiration to all about overcoming obstacles and never letting life's situations keep you from seeing and reaching your overall goals. His track record proves that with determination, wits, and an eagerness to learn and better yourself, one can reach self-actualization.

I think this book is a great read. You don't have to be a heart attack survivor to understand the pain or be able to relate to people's stories. It's informative, funny, and serves as great lesson to heart attack survivors, past, present, and future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart to Heart is just what the doctor ordered!
C. Bruce Johnson drives home the reality of surviving a heart attack - the emotional struggle, family trauma and life-changing events that happen as a result. He adroitly tells not only his own story but skillfully incorporates a coterie of other survivors stories as well. These heart attack survivors each provide the reader with 12 pithy, page-turning stories.
My father had a triple by-pass some years ago. I wish that I had had this book at that time.
Very readable, with a unique emphasis on the emotional aspects of surviving a heart attack.
This is a must-read for both heart attack survivors, their loved ones and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Lessons For Living A Healthy Life
These stories are incredibly motivating and inspiring to review one's own lifestyle and make changes the easy way - not suffering a heart attack.

In reading them, I found myself nodding my head at how each person realized (after the fact) that their lives changed instantly - but they didn't realize it until after they started recovery. I had shoulder surgery and it was life-changing, although not in the way a heart attack forces people to start over. I relate to their grieving process for what they no longer have.

Bruce is a wonderful story teller. He accurately captures each person's "voice," so you feel that everyone is sitting next to you, telling you what happened to them.

What I also like is how each individual's story features a different angle, or aspect, of the implications of a heart attack. As individual as we all are, so it is with recovery/rehabilitation from this dreadful event.

If you know someone who wants to change her lifestyle for ANY reason, get her to read these stories. I think they will motivate and encourage anyone to at least think about what changes they can make to become healthier and live longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Page-Turner
With great candor, longtime and one-time hard-driving investigative TV reporter Bruce Johnson bares his soul to reveal how he survived a "widow-maker" heart attack and worked every day since to "turn the page to an entirely new way of living." He leads the way for a diverse group of 11 other survivors around the country whose stories are equally absorbing and inspiring, as they work past the pain and coping to a new realization of life's meaning. There isn't a lot of explanation, as Bruce smartly follows his TV reporter instincts to let people tell their own stories. And you don't need to be a heart atack survivor to appreciate the universality of their stories. Let's hope Bruce and his fellow survivivors save a few more lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I like how the author looks at human evolution vs the evolution of the food industry, and there the two don't line up in terms of the public's health interests. Very enlightening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A worthy investment
A heart attack is not the end, it can instead serve as a wake-up call. "A Heart Attack Survivor's Guide: To a Long, Healthy Life" is a heart attack survivor's reflection on how to turn one's life around after one has been almost pushed to the brink of death through a heart attack. With a hefty dose of humor and understanding, Nelson Anderson gives readers a solid advisory. "A Heart Attack Survivor's Guide" is a worthy investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reading
I got this book for Christmas, and want to make sure everyone in my family reads it or gets a copy!! My parents especially will benefit from it, with the history of heart problems in our family. All the changes the author talks about have really helped me get healthier and feel much better. It's nice to read a warm, personal narrative that you almost forget is a "health" book. The author is really funny too, so it's really pleasant to read. I wish I had a book like this 10 years ago!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This book was purchased to aid in recovery from open heart surgery. There is little practical advice for the first weeks of recovery. The rest of it was either for patients who had a heart attack or was general information for heart health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cardiac Recovery handbook
If you are having surgery or have had surgery or want to understand about it or anything related to the cardiac system this is the book for you.If you just want to get on a better path this is for you.Understand what it is like and what you need to not only survive but live!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for cardiac patients
This book would get five stars from me if it had included something on valve replacement and repair. The author does a great job of explaining heart disease and the surgeries needed as a result of having heart disease. He covers the many drugs that are involved, the tests, the blood work and cardiac rehab. He even has a section on depression that can be associated with having a heart attack and heart surgery.

The other thing that kept me from giving this book five stars is that the author talks about the many blood pressure meds, but does not name any of them. I want to know which Beta blocker does what and why it would be prescribed over another. My husband could not tolerate Lopressor, while another Beta blocker might be better for him. And what about the increasing re-emergence of Digoxin as a drug of choice for CHF? Also - an appendix in the back incorrectly classifies some of the BP drugs as diuretics - i.e. Norvasc is a calcium channel blocker - not a diuretic.

Other than these discrepancies, this book is a good one to read for a heart patient or by someone getting ready to have a procedure related to heart disease.

Product Description
Your doctor might be killing you. So says Dr Michael Mogadam who illustrates how even the best-intentioned doctors have failed to keep up with scientific breakthroughs in preventing heart attacks -- and are often advising patients to do the opposite of what is right. Among his other findings, Dr Mogadam shows that for thirty years American medicine has pegged cholesterol as Public Enemy Number One in the fight against heart disease -- and proves who wrong that analysis is. Dr Mogadam highlights the 20 risk factors associated with heart disease, of which cholesterol is only one, and offers a step-by-step guide to avoiding -- or controlling -- all of them. He includes his own Twenty Risk Factors diet, which combines good nutrition and the latest science with practicality and a joy in good food. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changer
This is the best book I have ever encountered regarding the actions an individual should take to prevent heart disease. Every recommandation that Dr. Mogadam gives is supported by substantial research, based on significant sample sizes and sufficient exposure time for observations and conclusions.Having a strong history of heart disease in my family, I quickly applied his recommandations for diet and excercise (yes, this is basic, but he explains them in a way that no other has).I was rigorous in applying his approach, and this has been a life changer for me. Over five months, I lost 45 lbs. to bring my Body Mass Index within the recommended tolerance (albeit the max) and my blood pressure was reduced by 20/10 points. This book has been such a lifechanger for me that I have reordered a dozen and given one to all immediate family members, and to numerous friends who have concerns about heart health.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old Information
While much of the information in this book is still valid, none of it was new to me, and some of it is no longer valid. This was disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart Health
This is the best book I have read that really explains the behind-the-scene workings of the relationship among what we eat, exercise, and issues of cholesterol, fats, fruits and vegetables, and other factors to our heart health.I am dedicated to changing my diet to be more heart healthy. It will be a standard reference that I will return to often. There are some rather simple dietary changes that can make a difference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Heart Attack Is Preventable
In this highly informative book, Dr Michel Magadam tells you 20 Risk factors ofHeart Attack.A person who suffered a heart attach should read this book.It is definitely going to change his life style for ever.As long as you stick to the programs of Dr Michel, you will be free from another heart attack and feel better in many ways.He has given a most suitable diet for patients with heart disease, hyper tension, diabetes and cholesterol.

There are 2 things I couldn't put down. This book and my cup of S o y f e e. It's made from organic soyabeans which you brew just like coffee. No caffeine and I don't miss it either. Look for on the web at www. S oycoffee.com

4-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic reference for heart disease risk factors
Dr. Mogadam has compressed a huge quantity of information into the nearly 400 pages of this book. The unifying theme in this book is that Dr. Mogadam describes 20 risk factors for heart attack and proceeds to describe how diet, exercise, supplements, and medication impacts on each one. He includes discussions of some of the less commonly performed tests, like lipoprotein(a), fibrinogen, and chronic infections.

If you're searching for a good summary of conventional thought on cholesterol and heart disease risk, this book can be a useful reference. You might find it a bit tough to read front to back, as the style is somewhat dense and didactic. I think it might suit best as a reference to refer to when specific questions come to mind on these various risk factors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a fantastic book written in a very informative manner. The recipes are good too. What I thought was most interesting is how the author explains how heart disease develops... the typical American diet startsbuilding plaque on the artery walls as early as the teen years! You will besurprised when you read this book and then you will understand why heartdisease is such a big problem in America. The diet in this book is the bestdiet I have come accross, not being able to easily loose weight myself. Butthis diet does it without hunger. I can't say enough about this advice. Product Description
Cardiac Champs is a self-help book that teaches people with heart disease, particularly heart attack survivors, how to live a healthy, vigorous, happy life. Cardiac Champs offers real hope because it was written by a survivor who continues to live an active, happy and meaningful life twenty-five years after having had two heart attacks and suffering cardiac arrest. Dr. McConnell wisely uses humour and optimism to avoid any cathartic outpouring as he maps out his program to conquer anger, chronic worry, panic attacks and the perpetual fear of death. This focus on the mental and emotional aspects of recovery is unique. Indeed, the entire book is marked by innovation. It is even evident in the chapters concerned with traditional heart health issues such as diet and exercise. Cardiac Champs is a must read for heart attack survivors and others with heart disease who do not want the condition of their arteries to dictate the kind of life they live. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Happy Survivor
This is a wonderful, uplifting and often very humorousstory of a man who survived two heart attacks by the time he was 41 and now, 25 years later, describes how he recovered to live a full, active life free of the constant fear of death.

The book is equal parts personal story, self-help manual and consumer's guide. Dr. McConnell is a psychologist and his professional training serves him well for, as he says in one of the book's many aphorisms: "The heart heals faster than the mind because it has no memory." The road to recovery is not just a matter of sound dieting, exercise and nicotine abstinence, it is most of all learning to understand the emotions that led to the attack and how to control them. Dr. McConnell offers some practical techniques (with charts) to help the survivor. He also understands that a heart attack affects not only the patient but also all of his loved ones and he has some very practical advice to help the whole family to deal with the aftermath.
His theme throughout is: "stop being a victim and take control of your life" and he stresses that this is particularly important when dealing with the medical profession. "When it comes to drugs, the physician is your consultant, not your manager."

This book breathes vitality, humor and optimism and Dr. McConnell's advice and many of the practical techniques he proposes are useful to anyone recovering from any serious illness. You don't have to have been ill to read it; it's a great guide for a healthy life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational Read
Cardiac Champs is an inspirational read that is rich in detail & quick paced; as Dr.McConnell chronicles his life's journey after surviving two major heart attacks.
Cardiac Champs is engrossing & the writing is skillful. Although I kept laughing throughout this book, its simplicity is deceptive- Between the lines McConnell is about so much more as he details his personal journey with the medical profession, stress & his personal life; and how he came out on the other side as a happy, active man who had empowered himself to make his own decisions pertaining to his health/lifestyle
This book is not only a must read for heart attack survivors but for anyone with a life threatening condition & also for their family/friends to better understand that once one has survived a serious condition that the fight has only begun.
I am touched by Dr.McConnell's generous spirit in sharing his personal story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
This is the best read I have experienced in years. Although the focus is on the heart attack issue, the book has application for many other aspects of life.A must read for anyone who wants to live a happy, healthy and productive life.It should be the first book that shows up on the Amazon list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cardiac Champs
Anyone who suffers from heart disease will want to read this book. It is also highly recommended for their families, friends and colleagues. It is chatty, accessible, unorthodox and provides practical advice on how to thrive while living with a serious health problem from someone who has been there. From how to deal with the medical profession to charting a sensible way to take charge of your symptoms the approach is always funny and empathetic. Doctors should recommend it to their patients.
