Product Description
What are subclass A and subclass B—and what do they mean for your heart health? In The Heart Disease Breakthrough you'll find out it's not just your cholesterol count that matters. . . .

You can prevent heart disease, but what you have to know and do to achieve such safety is dependent on your individual mix of risk factors. You have to know what your risk factors are and what you can do to reduce their power over your life. That's what The Heart Disease Breakthrough will tell you, and it can make the difference between healthy longevity or early death from heart disease. This book presents for the very first time the newest, cutting-edge information now being taught to doctors; it is information essential to anyone interested in preventing a heart attack or recovering from one.—from The Heart Disease Breakthrough by Thomas Yannios, M.D.

You may think you already know everything there is to know about preventing heart disease. You count your total cholesterol, monitor your fat and sodium intake, and even do some moderate exercise each week. But consider these alarming facts: Many people who have heart attacks have cholesterol counts under 200. Low-fat diets can actually raise the heart attack risk in some people. And heart disease begins its onslaught on the body in childhood. But you can do something about it—and this book shows how.

Your true heart disease risk factors include far more than a simple total cholesterol test. New research has made substantial progress in unlocking the secret code of heart disease. The real risks are a combination of factors that you—and even your doctor—may never have heard of. Your risks are determined not only by how much cholesterol has accumulated in your bloodstream but by how big and sticky each particle of cholesterol is, your LDL subclass (A or B), and the levels of homocysteine and fibrinogen in your body. Your family heart health history provides the background for all these factors.

The Heart Disease Breakthrough is the first book to bring this array of startling new findings to lay readers. Packed with surprising, often alarming information and case studies of patients, it combines state-of-the-art medical research and the science behind the latest breakthroughs with a straightforward 10-step program to attain optimum heart health. Dr. Thomas Yannios walks you through the process of determining each of your risk factors and formulating a customized action plan.

The Heart Disease Breakthrough will inform you of the wide range of new medical tests that are available and what you need to do to counteract your individual risk factors. Filled with research-based information revealing everything from the nutritional pros and cons of everyday foods to the benefits (or ineffectiveness) of certain kinds of exercise, The Heart Disease Breakthrough gives you and your loved ones immediate access to the latest groundbreaking research. This is a book that can save your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Fat Diet Not for Everyone
15% of the population could be harmed by low-fat diets and unless you like playing Russian roulette with your life, you should find out if you're one of them (it requires a specific type of cholesterol test). This book is backed up by scientific studies and goes into relevant details of different types of cholesterol particles. It does take some effort to extract the infomation that is spread throughout the book but it is well within reach of most readers and well worth the effort.

I've read a number of books on preventing heart disease and this one is reccomended because it gives extremely important information you will not find in magazine articles, brochures, or other books. It goes into excellent detail on diet and exercise. The only reason why I think these facts aren't better known is that the extra complexity would confuse some people and cause a few to not to adopt low fat diets which is beneficial to most people.

4-0 out of 5 stars The first book to tell the lipoprotein story
Despite the broad awareness of cholesterol issues in the U.S., heart disease is rampant. A good part of the reason is that many people have causes for heart disease beyond cholesterol. Dr. Yannios has written the first book for the public that makes the complex issue of lipoprotein testing understandable for the average person. Lipoprotein testing fills in the huge gaps left by cholesterol, identifying risk for heart disease even in people with low or normal cholesterols. Dr Yannios talks about how shockingly often people who've suffered heart attacks (an often fatal event!) are told by their doctors that no cause can be identified, or that the causes are genetic and therefore untreatable. Absolute nonsense! Dr. Yannios tells us why.

5-0 out of 5 stars No fluff in this book.
Just intensely interesting and highly informative material that is presented perfectly. This information will motivate you to make the changes in your life necessary for good health - and not through "scare tactics".

It's difficult for me to comprehend how anyone who reads this book can come away with a negative opinion that results in a bad review.

I only wish that I had come into possession of this knowledge at an earlier date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, some risky advice
It is encouraging that Dr. Yannios rejects many of the conventional (and incorrect) approaches to heart disease prevention. There have been no studies that conclusively link high blood cholesterol, high dietary cholesterol, high dietary fat, or high blood triglycerides to heart disease.(For more on this, see Dr. Uffe Ravnskov's excellent book "The Cholesterol Myths.")I was pleased particularly pleased to see him mention that many people who have heart disease have normal cholesterol. In fact, nearly half of the patients in the Framingham heart study who died of coronary disease had blood cholesterol under 220!

I am, however, concerned that Dr. Yannios seems to be so concerned with atherosclerosis as a cause of heart disease. As Dr. Ravnsknov's book shows, there is no evidence that atherosclerosis causes heart disease, nor is there any evidence that high blood cholesterol causes atherosclerosis. And without that evidence, it is plainly risky to treat otherwise healthy patients with expensive cholesterol-lowering drugs that may have serious short- and long-term side effects, simply because they have preatherosclerotic streaks in their arteries.Even fetuses have such streaks.Should we give newborns cholesterol lowering drugs? If so, I am going to go sink all my money into pharmaceutical stocks.

I say, read this book, but read it skeptically.Do not go out and ask your doctor to prescribe cholesterol lowering drugs for you, especially if your cholesterol is normal.Go to a good library and read the journal articles on cholesterol and heart disease yourself, including the numbers.(Summaries can and do lie!)Read the clinical trials of cholesterol lowering drugs to discover the side effects of these drugs, and ask yourself whether, if you are currently healthy, you want to live a life riddled with those side effects in the name of your "health."Read a book on statistics so you'll understand what is and is not statitistically significant. And read "The Cholesterol Myths."

5-0 out of 5 stars Have an MI, then BUY THIS BOOK
I had an MI at the age of 36 (ouch).Since then I've tried to keep up to date on all the real, important research about heart disease causes and prevention.Trust me, you don't want to have a *second* MI.

This book takes all the important stuff you need to know and gives it to you in a form you can understand.Better than that, you can take *action*.Action that is tailored to *YOU*.

Both my GP and my Cardiologist knew less about all the risk factors than I did.We did the super-low-fat diet thing and they wanted to treat my lipids with *only* statins. This book has helped me educate them and given me what I need to advocate for myself.I'm know doing everything I can for my *specific* risk factors.

My diet is now low in carbohydrate. My doctors, of course had put me on an ultra-low-fat diet, which, for me (and for 25% of the U.S. population), was *exactly the wrong thing*.When I went on a high-protein, low carb, moderate fat diet my lipids ***greatly*** improved (oh yah and I lost 30 pounds).

Given my lipids, I know now that Niacin *and* statins are the right choice for my profile (I had an LDL-GGE test recommended in the book).

Hey I just had a thought...maybe *you* should buy this book *before* you have an MI... ... Read more

Book Description
A pioneering cardiologist and the author of the international bestseller The South Beach Diet presents the truth about cardiac care in this country and offers his proven program for preventing heart attacks and strokes.

This year alone more than 1 million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack or stroke. The shocking fact is that the majority of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented with the medical knowledge we already possess. Yet this isn’t happening. Why? Because doctors and hospitals are paid more to treat disease with invasive techniques like angioplasty and bypass surgery than to prevent it. In his most personal and passionate work yet, Dr. Arthur Agatston champions a revolution in heart disease prevention that will enable people to stay out of the hospital and off the operating table.

In Part 1 of this compelling book, he tells you why seemingly healthy people can suddenly have a heart attack and why people with great cholesterol numbers can be walking time bombs. He explains why belly fat can be an early warning sign of future heart disease and why a noninvasive heart scan can help predict your risk of heart attack. In Part 2, he presents the South Beach Heart Program, his 4-step plan for detecting, preventing, and even reversing heart disease: The 4 steps include: Heart-healthy eating, regular aerobic and core-strengthening exercise, state-of-the art diagnostic testing, and the latest heart-protective medications, as necessary. Thanks to his aggressive prevention approach, Dr. Agatston rarely sees a heart attack or stroke in his practice. Now you can benefit from the prevention strategy he uses to help his patients every day.

2-0 out of 5 stars Seven Steps to Stop a Heart Attack
I have studied heart disease since having a heart attack two years ago. Thanks to the internet, I have been able to spend hundreds of hours on stem cell research, chronic heart disease, modern drug treatment, and many other topics related to this condition.Dr. Bob Arnot's book is an outstanding effort to write a clear plan of attack for anyone affected by this condition.

The book is very up-to-date.It mentions work that has taken place in the last year or so.It also manages to explain in words that most of us can easily understand what these tests mean and how they can be applied.

This book was a real page turner. It is exciting and optimistic. If you ever wondered what those drugs you are taking did, then this book will tell you.If you what to know about stenting, start here.If you knew someone who had a heart by-pass ten years ago and want an update on the procedure, read this.

This is a very good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars 7 Steps to Stop Heart Attack by Dr. Arnot MD
The author cites classic signs of heart problems which include
the following:
- weakness

- shortness of breath, face and jaw pain
- GI nausea and vomit (women may get upper abdominal pain)

The Echocardiogram is the gold standard to test for heart problems following the classic symtomatology. Aspirin can be helpful on an immediate basis . Nitroglycerine may be necessary as well.

Glco protein II 6 and IIa are other classic treatment options.
TPA is an important clot buster which may be helpful. The C reactive protein blood profile describes the classic inflammation
experienced with heart problems. Diabetics have a harder time detecting pain due to neuropathy.

This book is an important reference guide for indicators of heart
trouble. Appropriate strategies are provided to help the reader

As a dental hygienist, this book particularly interested me because of the current research linking heart attacks and periodontal (gum) diseases. This well-written, empowering book is filled with stories of survivors. It is inspiring and informative, and the sprinklings of humor make it highly readable. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good history of heart research through 1980
Dr Morrison is a very good story teller and explainer of scientific research. And he has comments on a number of very good supplements for heart health. The only problem is that his story stops at the time of publication of this book and many important studies and conclusions have come along both in the medical field and in alternative medicine.

Not included are discussions of the need for some fat in the diet and for some cholesterol. For example, he says eggs are the quintessentially bad food because of cholesterol in the yolk, where more recent research has shown just the opposite - that eggs have a normalizing effect on lipids and cholesterol profiles.

But as a state of the art explanation of heart health practice as of the date of the book, it is an excellent resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Teaching Tool
The author of this book not only experienced the full impact of a heart transplant, he endured multiple other challenges and nearly every type of cardiac testing under the sun. That is why I feel this book is an excellent teaching tool for physicians and nurses to help their cardiac patients understand many of the cardiac procedures and tests which patients undergo. It has the potential to help ALL cardiac patients, not just cardiac transplant patients. I am a Registered Nurse and a Nurse Educator myself. I can see great value of this tool in this arena.

This is an inspiring story of how one man and his family walked down a long road of devastating medical challenges. David's story contains candid details of discouraging, frightening moments. But it is a story of hope, ending with the triumph of the successful transplant. His faith in God and his courage are evident across every page.

From Darkness To Light

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring "NewHeart" story
As a fellow heart transplant recipient "only" 13 years out now, it is always inspiring to read the life story of another fellow recipient who has led the way, being my "senior" in those 16 years post transplant.David tells his story with passion and insight, offering testimony to the human spirit that seemingly can overcome all odds (well, not ALL, but certainly able to climb lofty mountains of life challenge as his typifies)- serving as an inspiration to anyone facing their own unique life challenges, and isn't that what we need today, more inspirations like this?

David writes in easy to understand language of medical professional and family support along with a strong faith in God (imagine getting the call for a new heaert on Easter as a sign that God answers our prayers!).He endures more than many of us have had to with his transplant and life, but then that's what makes for good reading, right?Just don't fear transplant based on his many issues, that while each may be typical, most patients do not face all of them, but even if you did, isn't it great to hear they can be overcome as David's life story shows us?

Another important lesson learned from his story is the ever growing need (due to the success of the transplant process)for organ donors as (here in 2007...) over 100,000 patients await their own life saving organ transplant in the US alone.Inspired by David's story, give some thought to your own ability to save someone's life after your death through the gift of organ donation, then tell your family about your decision!

5-0 out of 5 stars Strength For The Task
The main character of this book should never have had a heart attack in the beginning, but he did!The struggles which came later, dealing with a very sick heart and then a younger heart gives us some idea of the difficulties involved in the process of transplanting organs. Not knowing from one day to the next whether he would be alive or not, Mr. Hollar exhibits great faith in God as he navigates the inside world of organ transplants, doctors, nurses and hospitals.Having received a mystical assurance that he was not going to die, he set about to get well. The excellent medical care from all the hospital staff; the love and support of his family and his deep abiding faith all helped in overcoming this tragic catastrophic illness.A faithful testimony, indeed. ... The nightmare of cardiologists performing PCI (stent implantation) is the eventual blockage of the stent, a process known as restenosis which can result in sudden death. My MI (heart attack) was in 2001. I discontinued taking statin medication in 2003, following 2 years of statin induced side effects, and the realization that the lipid hypothesis is totally unfounded. Routine testing (2006/2007) showed that the stent in my critical LAD artery (widow maker artery) is 100% blocked - full restenosis -Chronic Total Occlusion. However I lead a very full and active life. My changing lifestyle over the last several years has promoted the generation and development of alternative blood vessels circumventing my blocked artery. Further invasive intervention (bypass) is presently not in the works. I explain the life style changes that I have adapted, and substantiate my reasons for doing so. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Next 20,000 After the Heart Attack, the Statins and RestenosisA
As a heart attack survivor I found this book extremely informative. It is unbelievable how statins could affect anyone unexpectedly.Without a medical degree the author overcame the downside so well and perfected a healthy lifestyle with exceptional food formulas.

What impressed me greatly was the tremendous amount of research the author incorporated in his writings. The long scenic bike rides are done by many all over the world, but to prepare those complicated recipes, shows so much dedication.

I have recomended THE NEXT 20,000 AFTER THE HEART ATTAACK, THE STATINS AND RESTENOSIS TO MANY.Unusual title but Mike Stone explains this title on page 1.Actually you don't have to be a heart attack survivor to read this book. I never thought I would have a heart attack and there are so many out there thinking the same.Be prepared.I, however am still thinking about preparing these concoctions but reading the book as sent me on a healthier life style.

What if, like most women, you were overwhelmed by the struggle to balance work and family? So you did everything to be healthy and stress-free -- ate right, kept fit, never smoked, practiced yoga. And what if, out of the blue, your body betrayed you?

Like most American women, Deborah Daw Heffernan worried about breast cancer, not heart disease, the nation's number-one killer of women. Yet on May 12, 1997, Deborah, a slim and health-conscious executive in her mid-forties, was stricken by a near-fatal heart attack in her weekly yoga class. There was no warning and no family history of heart disease. There was only the sudden explosion inside her chest. After emergency surgery and a harrowing string of complications, Deborah faced a long and uncertain recovery, overshadowed by the looming prospect of a heart transplant.

An Arrow Through the Heart is her unflinching, soulful, and surprisingly funny chronicle of that first year -- which might easily have been her last. Anchored by the rugged landscape of Maine, by the fierce love of her husband, and by their two estranged families, who dropped everything to rally around her, she learned to do simple things all over again, one breath at a time. Ultimately, it was a year of healing both body and soul, of "finding meaning everywhere, like Easter eggs."

This book is about how illness, oddly enough, can give life back to us. For the tens of thousands with cardiac disease, it will be a welcome companion on the road to recovery. For the rest of us, Deborah offers a powerful testament to the unexpected joy that can come from living in a state of impermanence.Amazon.com Review
Healthy 44-year-old Deborah Daw Heffernan--a nonsmoker with low cholesterol and low blood pressure, who ate her vegetables to boot--lay down one day on the floor of her yoga class and felt her heart explode. Her heart attack--followed by a failed angioplasty, a double bypass, and eight days of unconsciousness--nearly killed her. During her recovery, she found plenty of books about heart disease and women, but no first-person stories--even though cardiovascular disease is the number-one killer of both men and women. An Arrow Through the Heart is the intensely personal account of her experience of surviving a heart attack, and how it changed everything.

Graphic details bring to life for the reader what happened to Heffernan. Her sisters enter her hospital room and see "a thrashing torture victim staked to the bed." Her swollen throat makes her look like "an inflated giraffe." She describes her postoperative depression, her lessons about love, her acceptance of impermanence, all in a well-written narrative of her heart attack that is woven through with snippets about her family and past. --Joan Price ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Toward the end of this book..
The author made reference to other books (and their authors) as well as using some self-help quotes..I need to go back and right them down. It was very helpful to read those--it helped with the flow of the book.

I had read about a 1/4 of this book and had put it down for quite a while but when I picked up I wasn't able to put it down.

I think the author has a website--I would like to know how she is doing right now--since the book has been written and published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
I just finished reading this wonderful book! I was motivated to read this because a dear girl friend is 45( also diabetic) and suffered a major heart attack. I wanted to know more about what happens medically and emotionally.
Very frightening. I want to know how the author is doing now?

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring
This was a very inspirational book for those of us who have lived through a debilitating illness and a different perspective on life for those who have not.It made me look at my world differently and appreciate where I am currently. The book was well-written and engaging.I have recommended it to many people.

5-0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book
This is an intimate account of what one woman goes through after having a heart attack.I was surprised about how much I enjoyed it.It is has a great deal of clinical detail of the illness, but it is mostly about the recovery process, the slow, hard, and difficult recovery from the insult to the body.Reading about someone who can't do the basic acts we all take for granted makes it easier to count your own blessings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Arrow Through the Heart
I read this book when it first was published and again recently. It really is one of the most absorbing and beautifully written books in my collection.I have sent copies to my friends and relatives and have been getting rave reviews. My cousin in England wrote: "I started Deborah's book at 8PM could barely put it down at 11, went to sleep and finished it the next morning!" ... Product Description
A Recent book by a heart attack victim has refueled the decades old debate: Do the cardiological benefits of statins outweigh their negative side effects?

Recent medical studies are recommending lowering existing LDL cholesterol levels for post heart attack patients to levels significantly lower than the ceiling of 100 mg/dL that has been in effect until now. Many people taking statins to meet the existing goal of 100 already feel that the quality of their lives has reached zero.

In "Surviving a Successful Heart Attack", Mike Stone describes the massive disruptions in his professional and personal life, and his own futile attempts to climb out of the mental/emotional abyss that he had somehow stumbled into. Anyone who has had a heart attack or fears one in the future will want to read Mike Stone's harrowing experience in post heart attack life and his own conclusions (contradicting many of today's accepted cardiological doctrines) as to what really caused his own heart attack. Well referenced.

Did you know that...

*The angiogram used for recommending procedures on the heart is highly inaccurate and that most angiograms are not necessary.

*There is no evidence that coronary bypass surgery or balloon angioplasties extend life, yet over 600,000 of these procedures are being done each year.

*Blood cholesterol levels are ineffective in determining heart attack risk and much more accurate measurements exist but are seldom used.

*Cholesterol-lowering drugs do not extend life, but may actually increase the overall death rate.

*The primary focus in the medical industry is to make a profit and, therefore, much of the advice and treatment we receive is not in our best interest.

*We pay an estimated $45 billion per year on preventive and treatment measures for heart disease that don't work.

*Obstructions in coronary arteries can open up with diet and lifestyle changes alone, but because of financial incentives doctors prefer sending patients into surgery.

*Conventional treatment for heart disease often does not work but safe, inexpensive methods are available that do work.

If your doctor recommends getting an angiogram, coronary bypass surgery, balloon angioplasty, or taking cholesterol-lowering drugs your best course of action may be to run out the door. For most people these procedures/treatments are not effective and are completely unnecessary. The most popular medical procedures are the most profitable for the health care industry but are often the least effective. Hundreds of thousands of people each year are deceived in undergoing expensive medical treatments that do no good and may even do a great deal of harm. Highly effective procedures that are low-risk and inexpensive are ignored or even ridiculed. Recommending expensive, high-risk procedures over the cheaper, more effective ones amounts to nothing more than fraud. If you had the choice of going through a risky $20,000 surgical procedure or simply taking a daily vitamin supplement which one would you choose? Most patients aren't given the choice.

These facts, and more, led Charles T. McGee, M.D. to write this hard hitting, expose of the health care system. In it you will learn which procedures and treatments to avoid and which ones offer the most hope. If you are concerned about heart disease, and everyone should be, you need to read this book! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars o.k., but a bit disappointing
I wanted to like this book, but I was a bit disappointed. The causes and treatment of coronary artery disease are topics about which well-qualified experts hotly disagree.Who should we believe? The author's credibility suffers by the poor production qualities of the book, especially numerous typographical and grammatical errors.Maybe it shouldn't be so, but it is.More importantly, the author's zeal in promoting his own views on the subject have an over-the-top feel.

The author is at his best when relating studies and pointing out what they imply or where they go wrong.Much of what he says I have read elsewhere or experienced first-hand.These parts are the most persuasive, the anecdotes are the least.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprising
I received this book as a gift, and judging from the title was expecting something kooky and eccentric.I was pleasantly suprised.Dr. McGhee supports every statement he makes with data, and provides references in the back.I was trying to lower my cholesterol level before I read this book (it's just under 200).Now I won't worry about it so much, asaccording to him taking cholesterol-lowering drugs could be much worse for my health.I learned a lot of things that surprised me, and saw a lot of things I took for granted challenged (such as that eating a low-fat diet is healthy). Now my curiosity has been aroused, and I want to read a lot more about the topic. The book is a bit dated, as the information it refers to only goes to 1999.I'd like to see an updated version.Nevertheless, I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart Frauds
I have been researching this kind of information and working with it for many years .
My opinion isBUY THIS BOOK .

If you have any concerns about any illness related to the Heart for your self , or others , you will not find a more relevant book .

4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone over 35years old should read this book!
I graduated medical school over 10 years ago, even then, Cardiothoracic surgeons and Cardiologists have always been at the top of the hiearchy in hospitals. This is due to both money and machismo.Several facts always troubled me; everything from the patients who had heart attacks despite normal cholesterol, to the inconsistent findings seen on angiogram, to the cognitive defects seen following surgery.

Well, McGee's book cites multiple studies showing there is little correlation between cholesterol and heart disease. Before reading the book, I had only read the studies justifying the use of statin drugs. It seemed strange to me that so much pathology was tied in to a molecule which is needed by your body to make hormones and components of brain tissue.

McGee points out lack of inter and intra-rater relliability in reading angiograms, which is used as the main study to determine what type of treatment will follow, the most invasive being open heart surgery.Well, it turns out that angioplasty and/or cardiac bypass don't prolong life.

Many cardiologists that I know have become wealthy using the following algorhythm: use statins to lower cholesterol. This doesn't work to decrease heart disease, so they probably won't lose them as patients. After a heart attack or the onset of angina, do an angiogram.Well, angiograms aren't reliable, so they can read into it whatever pathology they want.Eventually, they'll do an angioplasty based on an unreliable angiogram, this won't stop angina, so they'll throw in some stents.Eventually, the cardiologist will have billed all the procedures he can.Time to send them off to the heart surgeon. They'll get a 2-5 vessel bypass costing 50-100k.By this time the patient is probably broke.Despite all the worry, pain of getting procedures, and cost, the patient will have the same lifespan as he would have had had he stayed away from cardiologists (except perhaps in the acute phase of the heart attack).

What I tell my family members is stop smoking, eat a pound of fresh vegetables a day, lean meats with lots of oily fish, exercise at least 30 minutes most days of the week, take Vitamin B-6 to lower homocysteine, and when your doctor wants to measure your cholesterol, tell them "no thanks".Short of an acute infarct, stay away from cardiologists, especially the ones who describe themselves as "interventionalists", since invariably this will lead to a series of gradually more invasive procedures.

I didn't give 5 stars due to some of the cartoons in the book.I didn't think the cartoons fit in with the same scientific tone of the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outof the darkness into the Light
What a revelation. So glad to have read this book.Such a shame that the medical elite have to keep the American public in the dark on the more up to date science on why we are so heart attack prone in this country.I am so glad Dr. McGee is not afaid to tell the truth!People have to be more invovled and take more initiative in their health care and truly do some of their own research and don't just take their doctor's word for it as most doctors just parrot the party line or are too busy to find out the latest science on the why's of bodily manfunctions in their patients.

Need more preventative options instead of just masking the real problems with a pill or diet that really doesn't work.Treat the cause not the symptoms. Thanks Dr. McGee for enlightening me on a very important subject! Oh, and this book read like a murder mystery! After the first two chapters, I was hooked and couldn't stop reading it.

Sincerely,
Dotty B. ... Read more

Product Description
Heart Attack: A Cleveland Clinic Guide

There is no other medical center more qualified to write a book on this subject. The Cleveland Clinic Heart Center has been selected as the best Heart Center in America, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual survey for the past 11 years. Our doctors are leaders in cardiology, cardiac surgery, cardiothoracic anesthesia, and research into the heart and its diseases. No heart program has more experience, more knowledge and better access to technology. As medical pioneers, The Clinic developed cardiac angiography and the coronary artery bypass.

One great lesson is that heart disease is a tremendously frustrating condition. It progresses silently and makes its presence known—if at all—only well after it is established in the heart’s arteries. When there are symptoms—significant chest pain, for instance, or sensations of indigestion—they aren’t always recognized or acknowledged as being associated with heart disease or heart problems. Worse, sometimes the first sign of heart disease is a heart attack, and a lethal one.

This Cleveland Clinic Guide provides what anyone at risk of a heart attack needs most: real substantive information from a source that is trusted by people all over the world. Told through case histories, and fully illustrated, this Guide was written by specialists who understand what the patients are going through and know that with more information, patients will understand they are not alone. ... Dr. Rimmerman has written a fine book on the subject.Easy to read and understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid discussion
The book is set out in readable sections, and is very informative. Many questions may not be answered, but the basics are there. Most of the book assumes that all cardiac issues are due to coronary artery disease, though some are not.A worthy read, in all.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid, fact-filled resource thoroughly accessible to lay readers, and highly recommended
Heart Attack: A Cleveland Clinic Guide by Curtis Mark Rimmerman M.D. (Medical Director for Cleveland Clinic Westlake, Lakewood, and Avon Pointe) is the no-nonsense official guide from The Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, selected as the best Heart Center in America according to U.S. News & World Report's annual survey for the past eleven years. Numerous individual case stories clarify solid information about heart anatomy, telltale signs and warnings of risk to the heart, the patient's role in managing heart disease, how to choose the right heart doctor for one's needs, and much more. Of particular importance are the heart disease myths that Heart Attack thoroughly debunks, such as "if I have no symptoms, I'm not at risk", "heart disease begins in adulthood", and "smoking only hurts the lungs/cigars are 'safe'". A solid, fact-filled resource thoroughly accessible to lay readers, and highly recommended.
