Editorial Review Product Description Previous Eisenhower biographers have touched on his heart condition, but Clarence Lasby is the first to examine the impact of the president's health on the nation. He offers a dramatic revisionist account of the events surrounding the 1955 heart attack and subsequent efforts by the president and his staff to minimize its political impact. Drawing on newly opened medical records and personal papers of Eisenhower's physicians, Lasby challenges virtually everything we have believed about the president's heart attack. Most disturbingly, he has discovered that the president's personal physician, Dr. Howard Snyder, misdiagnosed the attack as a gastrointestinal problem and waited ten hours before sending Eisenhower to the hosptial. Lasby also sets the record straight on how the president and his aides "managed" the public's understanding of events, and he offers evidence that Eisenhower, Dr. Snyder, and press secretary James Hagerty withheld and recast information to serve the president's political priorities. Equally important, Lasby's book offers a touching portrait of a proud man faced with a debilitating disease. It examines Ike's private struggle to lead a full life despite his condition and analyzes his decision to seek a second term even against the advice of cardiologist Paul Dudley White. It also shows how a man who had always carefully looked after his health now became obsessed with it. Eisenhower's Heart Attack is both a remarkable medical case history and an incisive character study of a strong-willed leader. It further illuminates one of our nation's most popular presidents, as it recharges the debate over the relationship between politics and presidential health-and between national security and the public's right to know. |

Dual perspective of heart disease -unique lessons and advice He states his objective in chapter17, "What have I done in the past 26 months that produced a normalelectrocardiogram?".His book details his answer, and this answer isimportant to everyone with a tendency towards heart disease. His bookclimaxes, as it should, with a chapter title Recommendations where hestates emphatically, "Be aware that health is foremost a personalresponsibility, not the physician's or the medical system's." Dr.Tenney wants the patient to be empowered; to be in charge; to be attuned tolife's signals. Dr. Tenney confirms what I and all the patients in myCardiac Rehab program have learned:a cardiac event is a gift, and eachsurvivor's life is permanently changed by such an event, and those who doas Dr. Tenney has done, live longer, healthier, and richer lives.
"Not worth your time or money" By virtue of his profession, Dr.Tenney knew what cards were to be dealt him in diagnosis and treament ofhis myocardial infarction. The rest of us have no such luxury. We aresurprised and frightened at each step of the healing process.I had hopedthis cardiologist would express enlightenment, "So this is what it'slike being a patient!"He does not.Sadly, the book results in akind of confessional, how he denied his own heart attack, how he had notfollowed standard medical advice about prevention, and so on.The booksheds no new light on heart disease, treatment, or recovery. In hischapter titled "Empathy", he claims he now has empathy with hispatients, yet gives no examples of such.In fact, throughout the book, hementions no patient other than himself, the text heavily populated with thepronoun "I", or "my heart attack" and "myfeelings." No doubt Dr. Tenney felt better after writing thisconfessional, but your money is better spent on other popular books aboutheart disease. It merits a single star. ... Read more |
