Product Description
The field of cardiac catheterization for congenital heartdisease is nearing the end of a period of rapid expansion, change, anddiversification. Now is a good time to identify and assess many ofthese changes. This retrospective view serves more purposes thanself-congratulation: it allows a clearer prediction of where the fieldis likely to go, and how it gets there. The first and most obviouschange is the continued rapid growth of Catheter-directedinterventional procedures. A less dramatic but equally pervasive change has been the improvementin non-invasive diagnosis, primarily by ultrasound but increasinglyvia magnetic resonance imaging. A highly revolutionary change has beenthe consolidation and shrinkage of cardiologists who performinterventional procedures. Where will the next decade take the catheterizer and his or hercolleagues? Perhaps into catheter delivery of gene therapy to treatinherited myopathies or vasculopathies. Even likelier is the use ofcatheters to implant pulmonary valves made from a patient's owntissue. Likelier still will be the demise of film and the continuedemergence of the multimedia laboratory. Underlying the success of any and all of these changes will be acommitment to rigorous self-criticism and self-analysis. A renewedcommitment to these values is especially important at this time forthe field of diagnostic and interventional catheterization incongenital heart disease. ... Read more

Forget the miracle pills and diets and live longer!! Dr. Neal Pinckney's book makes it easy to understand why many of us are overweight and have health problems. There are no secrets here, just the truth about living well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is a fantastic book written in a very informative manner. The recipes are good too. What I thought was most interesting is how the author explains how heart disease develops... the typical American diet startsbuilding plaque on the artery walls as early as the teen years! You will besurprised when you read this book and then you will understand why heartdisease is such a big problem in America. The diet in this book is the bestdiet I have come accross, not being able to easily loose weight myself. Butthis diet does it without hunger. I can't say enough about this advice. Ithas changed my life and the way I look at my health. I no longer feel likeI am a ticking time bomb that will eventually need a coronary bypassoperation ... an operation that has become very routine in America.

This book is one of the best cardiologybooks i have ever read.It contains good ,sound medical advice in a comprehensiveeasy-to-readstyle.It is definitely a must-read for anyone with heart troubles..big orsmall.

5-0 out of 5 stars This 1997 resource is invaluable for the inquiring heart..
Heart Fitness for Life's content is much broader than the title indicates. It addresses many basic issues and goes into enough detail to answer questions/concerns from patients and releatives.

After having reviewedand read 18 or more books on heart disease, I can say with confidence thatMcGowan's book is the best without qualification. Heart books date veryquickly but Heart Fitness addressed Homocystein issue and genes in concisestyle that was easy to understand.

My only suggestion for the nextedition would be to address the "stress" as one of the signficantrisk factors.Saplosky's, Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers"is a useful update on stress related disease and the linkag to our hearts.

Dr.Ornish's and Dr. MacDougal's books would make positive companion's to thisbook and are worth considering.

I strongly recommend McGowan's not asthe "first" comprehenisive approach to her topic but as the"most current" on the every changing field of caridology.

Product Description
How to Really Prevent and Cure Heart Disease: The Billion Dollar Cholesterol Scam, by Dr. Gottfried A. Lange. According to World Health Organization statistics, one out of every two people die from heart attack or stroke annually worldwide. In the United States alone, 2,000 people die each day from heart attacks. The frightening fact: every other person at the age of 25 has already developed the preliminary stage of heart attack and stroke called arteriosclerosis. Since 1972, drug companies and medical doctors addressing this worldwide epidemic constantly tell us to lower our cholesterol. But despite intense efforts to lower cholesterol, costing billions of dollars to Americans each year, the epidemic of heart attacks and strokes has seen no improvement. How to Really Prevent and Cure Heart Disease, based on 247 scientific references, reveals the true causes of this worldwide heart disease and stroke epidemic and provides the vital information needed to really cure or prevent heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure altogether and become or stay healthy and fit. Recent clinical research reveals that it is NOT cholesterol that causes heart attacks or strokes. Moreover, lowering your cholesterol can even be hazardous to your health. Cholesterol-lowering drugs (statins) decrease coenzyme Q10 (essential for a healthy heart) thus promoting heart failure. According to current medical research, lowering cholesterol levels is directly associated with numerous deaths and the increased incidence of cancer. Conversely, high cholesterol levels are associated with a high life expectancy and low incidence of cancer. Did you know that every person who suffers from cancer perhaps not coincidentally also has a very low cholesterol level? Male and female sex hormones are manufactured by the body from cholesterol and the lowering of one s cholesterol levels can lead to declining sexual function. A significant association between low and lowered cholesterol levels and behavioral violence is found across many scientific studies. Almost thirty percent of the body s cholesterol exists in the brain. It is not surprising then, that medical researchers have linked the onset of Alzheimer s disease to lowered levels of cholesterol in the body. Get your copy today! ... Read more

This little book gets my super recommendation. What a READ!!! I started reading at the pool in the afternoon and was half way through in 2 hours.

One thing I learned a long time ago, it is always better to know what is going on around you, then not knowing. If you know things, you are more likely able to not be the adverse effect of it; hence knowledge is power.

It is very well written and the clear illustrations make it so easy to understand!

I will make sure that all of my relatives and friends get this book.... this is extremely important knowledge for life at any age!

I am smarter for it and will be much healthier in the future, which has suddenly become bright!

5-0 out of 5 stars McDougall is my hero
McDougall is compelling and bold in his presentation of a radical protocol for heart health. He is absolutely correct and proves it by his results. It takes this radical approach to reverse the damage done by the typical American diet. The whole dietetic fraternity (or educational approach) approach to heart health diet is scandulously flawed from beginning to end and has permitted a rapidly detereorating condition in the health of America. Sad. But McDougall has the answer and hopefully his program will take hold more and more in the circles of influence that can make the greatest difference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Making a Difference In My Life
I discovered John McDougall through a friend who explained the program to me.Right then and there I decided I needed to know more. So, I went to my first source for information ~ Amazon.com.When I discovered there was a McDougall for the Heart, I knew I was on the right track.I bought a used copy. Then, I couldn't wait for it to arrive. As soon as it came, I read it cover to cover, started fixing recipes and was amazed at how good eating right could really be.I committed to being vegan. The McDougall plan is easy to understand. One potatoe, two potatoe, three potatoe, four.It is starch based.Eat a starch as the basis for meal planning, add fruits and veggies, and you are good to go.I've lost 13 pounds in four weeks, feel great, and I am a heart patient.I am back to exercising when I had given up due to PAD and neuropathy.I am more like myself than ever. This is a decent book, easy read, and comes highly recommended.I was afraid I was going to have to kill the keys in order to be able to type something ever again.Al Milliren

5-0 out of 5 stars Reverse and Prevent Heart Disease. Stop the Pain.
What's the number one killer in America? AIDS? Diabetes? Cancer? America's big killer is heart disease. In the United States, over 1.25 million heart attacks occur each year. To make matters worse many of those who suffer such attacks die before they reach a hospital. According to McDougall, "The cause of the most common form of heart disease is blockage of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The blockages, results of the condition known as atherosclerosis, are caused by plaques forming along the internal walls of the arteries. Eating rich foods loaded with cholesterol and fats leads to the formation of these plaques. Heredity is also a factor, but should not be over emphasized because at least half the American population is susceptible. Besides, you can do nothing about changing your heredity."

But there is a lot you can change--and McDougall shows you what and how.

He answers all your questions, and most importantly, he backs up his statements with a stack of references to the medical literature. And unlike angioplasty and bypass surgery which are temporary, short-term relief measures (at best), McDougall provides long-terms solutions that remove the cause allowing your body to reverse blockages, and for those without blockages--how to prevent them. His primary emphasis is on a zero cholesterol, very low fat, plant based diet.

The book is fairly complete, includes answers to all your frequently asked questions, includes an abundance of tasty recipes, and explains many things your doctor hasn't told you (in most cases because he does not know). As a former professor in Internal Medicine at Univ. Hawaii Medical School Dr. McDougall does.

If Americans followed the advice in this book there would be little or no heart disease in this country. Best of all if you follow McDougall's advice and follow his dietary advice you will find that the "drugs that were intended to reduce chest pain should be decreased gradually in dosage and then discontinued entirely as soon as possible." This of course should ONLY be done under the supervision of a doctor.

I would buy three copies of this book. One for yourself, one for your loved one, and one for your doctor.

What your doctor does not know may kill you--and many cardiologists sadly are ignorant of the information provided in this book--though thanks in part to the efforts of doctors like McDougall, Ornish, Fuhrman ..., and others, many of them are learning. ... Read more

Product Description
Heart disease is the number one killer in America, claiming one life every minute. Bypasses, angio-plasties, and stents treat specific artery blockages, but doctors are discovering that these invasive procedures might be only a short-term fix for the underlying problem: poor blood flow. In HEAL YOUR HEART WITH EECP, Dr. Debra Braverman debunks common misconceptions about heart disease and explains a cutting-edge, noninvasive heart procedure known as enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP). FDA-and Medicare-approved, EECP is cost-effective and, unlike surgery, completely safe and painless. Using blood pressure cuffs to push blood through the body, EECP actually helps promote the development of new blood vessels to naturally bypass clogged vessels and restore the flow of healthy, oxygenated blood to the heart. In doing so, EECP reduces or eliminates angina, increases energy and stamina, and returns patients to activities they thought they had given up forever. EECP is the primary heart disease treatment in China, yet U.S. doctors and patients are only beginning to realize its lasting benefits. HEAL YOUR HEART WITH EECP dispenses the critical information about heart disease and answers all questions about this revolutionary treatment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EECP, a noninvasive way to help improve blood circulation
This is a very well written and informative book about the benefits of EECP.Dr. Debra Braverman has done an excellent job in bringing this info to the public. After being advised by my cardiologist that he thought EECP would be benefitical to me, I researched the subject on-line and purchased this book to assist me in making a decision. There should be more doctors like Dr. Braverman, dedicated to helping patients in the best way possible. Unlike the U.S. medical profession, China has been using EECP extensively for many years.China believes in non-invasive treatment rather than invasive medical treatment.Their doctors are rewarded much more for keeping patients healthy and out of hospitals. In the U.S., doctors make much more money with invasive surgical procedures and putting patients in hospitals. The pharmaceutial industry controls the medical schools, doctors and the FDA and it is all about greedy people making money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Saver
My husband was very sick with another illness. He also had to go through an operation to have stents input into his arteries. After a few months he suffered from restenosis ( clogged stents)He was told by his cardiologist he had to have a heart by-pass or he would only live a few months. We knew he was too weak to have surgery (although they claimed he would be 'just fine') We researched our options and came across this book.Thank you Dr. Braverman. We found an EECP machine in Vancouver Canada where we live (the only one in Western Canada) and took the 50 treatments.Today my husband still suffers from the other illness but has no heart problems. We believe he would not be alive today had he not taken the EECP treatment. At one point he could not walk up the stairs - he is now active in the garden and it has given him new life.EECP is not covered by insurance in Canada and costs approximately $100 per treatment for 35 sessions - our naturopath offered the final 15 sessions at no charge.Bless his heart. This book explains in detail why and how the treatments will be beneficial to you.A very good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars EECP is a lifesaver for heart disease -non invasive
For some reason, the EECP process is little known in the USA. It can stop angina after the treatments for several years and prevent heart attacks. Altho it was first discovered in the USA, it was developed to its current state in China. The Chinese do not want to do invasive surgery until all other ways are gone.So EECP there has over 2000 places you can get EECP -a non-invasive process. China has documented over 100,000 cases where EECP helped patients over 90 percent of the time... I had EECP in 2003 and 2005 after two triple bi-passes and several stents. In 2010 I had severe angina and an angiogram found that I had lost my LAD [widow maker's artery]. I figured I was a goner. But I got better and am now taking EECP again. Evidentally my heart has opened tiny branches of nearby artteries called "collateral circulation". This makes it possible for blood to detour around blocked or narrowed arteries. EECP helps this process. I say Thank goodness I found out about EECP. More people should know about it. Read the book as a starter!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
A must have for those who are EECP Therapists or those who are considering the therapy. Dr. Braverman gives the reader many options to consider when consulting with your physician. As a certified therapist and IETA board member, I can attest that EECP works and should be considered by all those debilitated by angina.I provide this book to all my patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone with heart disease
An almost unknown technology that could help millions. Its non invasive and almost too good to be true, but it is true. ... Read more

Product Description
Millions of people have been using the low-fat, low-cholesterol, high-carbohydrate diet that has been promoted for the last half-century in the mass media for prevention of heart disease and stroke.During this same period, the numbers of new cases of heart disease and stroke have not decreased as promised but increased, and type-2 diabetes and obesity, which were uncommon 50 years ago, have grown to become major epidemics.

In this book, heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, obesity, and cancer are termed the modern nutritional diseases because scientific studies and biochemical facts clearly point to the modern American heart-healty diet as a major underlying cause of these diseases. This book describes the changes that have taken place in the American diet over the last 100 years and explains how these changes were accelerated after 1930 by advances in food technology. The book presents biochemical and other scientific evidence to show how these changes are implicated not only in the modern nutritional diseases but also in other growing disease problems such as Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, senile dementia, and depression.

This book shows how micro- and macronutrients relate to health and disease prevention. It also shows how faulty science has influenced national health policies and explains how the reader can sort truth from fiction. The final chapter outlines simple dietary and lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce the risk of the modern nutritional diseases and, at the same time, improve one's health and sense of well-being. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The truth of the diet connection to several major diseases
The authors have deep backgrounds in nutrition research and the physiology of how nutrients help or hurt us, having also been published in very prestigious professional journals. To really understand, at a deep level, how the components of our diet, such as carbohydrates, fats/oils, and proteins help or hurt us this book is superb. It is especially eye opening about the negative effects of a very low-fat diet, why we need some saturated fat and why many of our modern seed oils could be adding to the problems of obesity, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. The authors say they are aiming at a general audience, but I think having some rudimentary biology and chemistry knowledge helps to fully appreciate this book. Each chapter is written as a stand alone piece, so it is not necessary to read it cover to cover if you only have an interest in one particular disease - lets say diabetes - but I found every bit of it excellent. The chapter covering cholesterol and the function of statin drugs should be a must read for anyone who has been advised to start a statin regimen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prescription for Health
This book should be read by every medical student in this country!Though highly technical (not a self-help book, per se), it is a comprehensive look at the many studies on nutrition, health, and biology that have occured over the last thirty years and nailed down the basics of why we are so sick in this country! Our family has followed some of the recommendation outlined in the back of the book with great results.I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take a serious look at why [we] are so sick and become pro-active in improving their health!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
Book in perfect condition.Plus, everyone should read this book if they want to know anything about good nutrition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information
I purchased this book a week ago from vbi201 (the publisher) and started reading as soon as I opened the package.I have been so impressed (by both the book and the delivery service) that I purchased a second copy from vbi201 to send to my daughter today. If you want hard facts on nutrition, this is one excellent source of information.

I first went to the Queen of Fats by S. Allport page, read Kaufmann's 2 reviews and other reviews, which all recommended The Modern Nutritional Diseases by the Dr.s Ottoboni as the best book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything That SHOULD Be Taught To Dietitians And Doctors
So much of the research into the most destructive health ailments we now face is focusing on the role of the diet. This is something Dr. Fred Ottoboni and his wife Dr. Alice Ottoboni know a thing or two about. Before retirement, they had spent many years of their career investigating, studying, and researching disease occurrence among various people groups around the world and they discovered something quite revealing in light of our current crisis with obesity, diabetes and worse: much of it is preventable by simply ignoring the high-carb, low-fat, low-cholesterol advice that has sadly become accepted as the "healthy" diet.

In Modern Nutritional Diseases, Drs. Ottoboni explain in meticulous detail why those diets are useless against most modern diseases and shares the research showing the elimination of sugars and starches will put us back on the road to health faster than removing saturated fat and cholesterol from our diet. There's even an invaluable chapter on how to distinguish good science from bad science among the many voices telling us what the facts are.

The references and charts contained in this book make it well worth having in your low-carb library. I'll warn you now that it does get a bit technical in some areas, but this stuff isn't simple either. There are many things to evaluate and analyze in the process of coming to the conclusions about nutrition and metabolism that Drs. Ottoboni do. This is every bit as good a book to read as Gary Taubes' Good Calories, Bad Calories was because it complements much of the same concepts and ideas.

My favorite part is at the end in a chapter called "What do you do now?" the authors give you practical instructions about making the changes you need in order to ward off the modern nutritional diseases in your own life. Specifics about diet, supplements, exercise, and suggested resources for further education are provided. This is an invaluable tool for anyone following a controlled-carbohydrate nutritional approach or who wants to learn more about why this way of eating works so well. ... Read more

Product Description
Since 1928, the New York Heart Association Functional Classification has been the system most widely accepted worldwide for assessing the severity of cardiac or cardiovascular disease, and evaluating the patient's response to treatment. This book sets out a diagnostic classification system for heart disease. The book is presented in six sections. The first four define the five components of any diagnosis: what is the cause? (aetiologic diagnosis); what is the structural anomaly? (anatomic diagnosis); what is the functional abnormality? (physiologic diagnosis); and how severe are the symptoms and what do the lab tests show? (functional capacity and objective assessment). These last two items, which summarize the clinical findings, constitute the two-part NYHA Classificabon for grading disease severity and tracking a patient's response to treatment. The fifth section discusses uncertain diagnosis. The sixth section, new to this edition, covers diagnostic techniques that have become standard since the last revision. Other changes in the ninth edition are a thorough updating of the biology of heart disease and a discussion on ventricular diastolic dysfunction. This edition restores the functional capacity component of the classification (dropped from the past two editions) and introduces an objective assessment category. ... Product Description
The new edition of this practical guide draws on the clinical skills of a wide range of international experts to help you recognize and manage heart disease in pregnancy. Designed for on-the-spot use, this convenient and concise text helps you identify a cardiac problem, understand its pathophysiology, and respond appropriately.

Under the careful editorial direction of Drs. Oakley and Warnes, the Second Edition introduces new contributors from North America and Europe as well as new chapters on:

  • pulmonary hypertension
  • rheumatic heart disease
  • artificial heart valves
  • Marfan syndrome
  • auto-immune diseases
  • hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • rhythm disorders
  • hypertension
  • cardiac intervention

The entire book is scrupulously updated to reflect the most current standards of care. The contributors – all recognized leaders in their respective fields – outline the pathway to diagnosis and appropriate management by a multi-disciplinary team.

Although heart disease is the leading medical cause of maternal death, clinical trials in this population are few and the evidence base is small. The expert recommendations in Heart Disease in Pregnancy, Second Edition, are a welcome source of information for cardiologists, obstetricians, general practitioners, and all members of the patient care team. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy the text book - not the kindle version
I have the smaller kindle. The graphs and tables are extremely difficult to read and to navigate once enlarged.

Having said that, this is a wonderful resource for anyone who sees high-risk pregnant women or younger women with cardiovascular disease. It's worth remembering that the pre-menopausal women with cardiovascular disease should have their pregnancy risks and management issues identified before any pregnancy, if at all possible, as well. This book makes that assessment easier as it will point you to the available literature.

This is a clear and well-written resource- particularly valuable given the lack of similar works available in this complex area of medicine.I think a tertiary care facility would be wise to have this text on hand.

A very helpful tool if you are counceling pregnant women in a cardiology department. The chapter on peripartum cardiomyopathy is the best I have ever read.

Product Description

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, killing six times as many as breast cancer. What's worse, too few women realize the dire risk they face.

WomenHeart, the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease, is an organization dedicated to helping women heart patients and those at risk for heart disease, whether they know it or not. Through an extensive support group network, they also help women who have heart disease live normal lives. And because dietary changes are often an important part of the recovery process, when their members gather, the conversation naturally turns to food.

To help spread the news of their work, WomenHeart has created this one-of-a-kind collection that focuses on 40 key foods known to promote heart health that features a number of family-friendly recipes from their members.

Packed with plenty of great-to-wake-up-to dishes like French Toast with Orange Cream and Lemon Blueberry Muffins, it also includes dozens of crowd-pleasing dinner favorites like Revamped Chicken Pot-pie, Beef and Vegetable Stroganoff, and Sesame Salmon with Spicy Cucumber Salad. In fact, in this collection there's a recipe for every occasion, as well as 40 enticing photographs.

Even better, this cookbook includes plenty of desserts, like Flourless Chocolate Cake, Summer Fruit Compote, and Raspberry Buckle, making it easy to see that fighting heart disease can mean indulging in the pleasures good food offers.

2-0 out of 5 stars high fat meals for heart care?
I really wanted to like this book. It has an attractive lay-out and the opening chapter is informative and well written.
The recipes sound good, too.But I was surprised at how many of them were very high in fat and fat calories. Many ranged from 30% to 40% of calories from fat.I have heard guidelines for heart health that suggest keeping fat below 30% of calories, and the Dean Ornish diet requires that only 10% of calories come from fat.My own cardiologist recommends that everyone, with or without heart disease, try for 20% or fewer calories from fat.
A dinner of Fruited Rice Pilaf with Chicken Ragout would result in 23 grams of fat.If on the same day,I ate the Oatmeal Pudding (11 gms fat) for breakfast and enjoyed the Broccoli Rabe soup for lunch, (12 gms fat),I would have consumed 46 gms of fat, not counting any desserts or snacks.I realize that the recipes are emphasizing the good fats while avoiding Sat and Trans fats, but still, this is a liberal helping of ANY fats in one recipe or one day. While I will try some of the recipes,as usual, I will have to modify them to reduce the fat grams for a healthy heart diet.
I was also surprised, that in the section called "Types of Heart Disease"there was no mention of many types of heart diseases, such as valve problems, pericarditis, enlarged heart, etc.As such, the discussion of different heart problems seemed limited.
I liked the information on specific foods and I think, with a revision of many of the recipes in a future edition, this book could be much improved.

4-0 out of 5 stars Trying to understand and lower cholesterol
I recently was told by my doctor that I need to lower my total cholesterol. This came as a bit of a surprise as I didn't know I had a problem and I am still fairly young.I bought this though and the information and recipes are wonderful.I find that I enjoy looking through, finding recipes that I like and using the ingredients I enjoy that are good for me that she tells you all about in the beginning of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Heart Healthy Cookbook!
This is one of the most educational heart healthy cookbooks I have in my collection.I love the way it talks about all the specific heart healthy food in the beginning and then incorporates them into delicious recipies. Well done ladies!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Diet Plan (and the first one that has ever worked for me)
For 20-odd years I have been struggling against my own increasing weight, lipids, glucose, arterial hypertension, and rapidly advancing arteriosclerosis with statins, niacin, ACE Inhibitors, ARB's, vitamins, supplements, and multiple low carbohydrate diets and exercise. Nothing worked. I began Dr. Esselstyn's program in May, 2009 after reading "Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease". I was skeptical to say the least since I am a physician and have always been considered to be the prototypical "caveman" or carnivore. It took me two and a half weeks to stop cheating on the diet and to stop resenting the lack of meat on my plate. Since then I have not strayed from his recommendations. By September, 2009 I had lost 32 pounds without even trying! I was able to eliminate 5 antihypertensive medication doses from my daily regimen (I still take 3 tablets daily). My Fasting Blood Sugar is below 90 for the first time in memory! My lipids are in the low, low normal range for the first time in 22 years. There is something to this! THIS WORKS!! ... Read more

Product Description

Coronary heart disease kills more people in the United States than any other heart disorder, and it is the leading cause of death among American women. Jerome E. Granato, a distinguished cardiologist with more than twenty-five years of experience, has created an authoritative and accessible guide to this common condition, providing patients and their families with insight and advice.

Dr. Granato begins by describing the basic science of the disease, known also as atherosclerosis, in which arteries become clogged and damaged. He then explains who is at risk and how the disease is detected and diagnosed. He covers all the treatment options, from medications to surgery, and answers such questions as:

• How do I know if I have coronary heart disease?• What is a heart attack?• Does my condition need to be treated with surgery?• What are the benefits and risks of balloon angioplasty?• What are stents and how do they work?• How can I manage my condition for the future?

He addresses the needs of specific populations, and concludes by discussing how a healthy diet and regular exercise can influence health before and after treatment and how it can help prevent disease.

Even after coronary heart disease is diagnosed, its course can be modified. This valuable resource will help patients and their families make some of the most important health care decisions they will ever face.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-read for anyone with CHD. Excellent book!

After some unstable angina, I received a stent in my coronary artery at a fairly young age. Since then I was always plagued with questions about my medications, my prognosis, dangers, and what actually happened. Doctors and cardiologists will always tend to give you the Cliff Notes version. Websites and books will always repeat the usual ad nauseum prevention advice-- eat right, get exercise, keep your cholesterol low.

Living with CHD is a great book that answered my questions, and clarified everything my doctors ever told me. This book goes beyond the usual lay terms and topline information. It explains the biological and chemical processes of CHD, studies, and outlooks. And it does so with easy-to-swallow analogies and explanations. If you're tired of the usual information on heart health, this book will satisfy your appetite to know more.

It does get academic at points and sometimes can feel like a science lesson, but if you have CHD and want to know what's going on with your condition and care, this book is a well-written, absolute must-read. I finally know, in more medical terms, what's wrong with me and what all my meds really do. Kudos to the author and also Johns Hopkins Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars A standout book on CAD for patients and family members
I've looked at a number of books on coronary artery disease for patients and this is among the best I've seen. It's short, clear, up-to-date, and does not over-simplify. If you need a diet and exercise manual, this is not the book to choose, but if you need a good reference to help you understand current treatment options, get this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for patients & families
This book explains very complicated medical conditions/treatment to patients and their loved ones in a very simple, understandable way.As a nurse, I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to learn about their heart disease and how to manage it.It helps you to be an advocate for your own healthcare.Very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Bypass Survivor

5-0 out of 5 stars Vegetable Quiche is Outstanding!
I decided to make a recipe from the book to take to a women's group meeting that was scheduled in the morning. I made the unique rice-crust vegetable quiche recipe and was thrilled that I did. It sat up beautifully in my 9 x 13-inch pan; cut squarely; and was so delicious!

My group of 24 loved the recipe and the best part--there were people present that couldn't eat gluten and had to avoid wheat. Most "egg bakes" have bread...this recipe doesn't call for any wheat products...so it was a double winner.

Recipes in this book work! And, people sing your praises for a long time because they remember good food!

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally tasty, nutritionally responsible
If you love food, love to cook and eat, and suspect that this will ultimately kill you, get this cookbook today!Cooking A La Heart is proof that healthy eating doesn't have to be bland. There's something for everyone in this book--red meat eaters will be delighted as well as vegetarians. The replacement recipes for everything from salad dressings to Shake and Bake are absolutely delicious, and not one has been a disappointment. There's a coating for baked chicken that's essentially non-fat dry milk combined with a lot of paprika, some powdered chicken boullion, black pepper, dry mustard and Italian herbs. You put it in a bag, shake up some skinless chicken pieces in it, and bake at 375 degrees for an hour or so.The result is sublime, and totally unexpected. It's a little spicy, and the chicken absolutely melts in your mouth.

Of course, since this is a heart-healthy cookbook, there's the obligatory introduction with facts and figures about salt, fat and their relationship to heart disease and stroke, and it's interesting, but the bottom line is that these recipes taste good and are responsible choices for daily consumption. They don't require a lot of weird equipment or ingredients, aren't at all difficult to prepare and the nutrition and exchange information is at the end of each recipe.

If you're transitioning into healthy eating, this is a great start. An added bonus is to know you're doing something really good for yourself and your family. If anyone in your household already has heart issues, or you're interested in being proactive, this is a wonderful addition to your cookbook shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just first rate!
If you think heart healthy eating has to be bland or with no variety, tyr this. There are a wide variety of familiar dishes, such as chili, stews and fish dishes.Like one of the other reviewers, my copy is starting to fall apart also. I had gone through a stack of healthy eating cookbooks and this one is the best!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Food, Poor Bookbinding.
The recipes are excellent, but the cookbook itself is falling apart.Maybe because I use it so often. You will get better tasting results from this cookbook than from many of the other heart healthy cookbooks.I wish the publisher had included pictures of the dishes. This book has healthy versions of many of my favorite dishes from childhood, including pork chops.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great food!
My husband had a heart attack so I bought this book to cook foods for him that I thought would be more healthy for him to eat.I don't know that much about nutrition, but I do know that these are some of the best tasting recipes that I have ever cooked...from any cookbook of any kind...and I have been cooking for a long time!I would recommend this book to anyone, heart problem or not! ... Product Description
THIS BOOK PROVIDESA COMPREHENSIVE AND EXHAUSTIVE STUDY OF THE NATURAL AND MODIFIED HISTORY OF CONGENITAL HEART DISEASE, FROM THE FETUS TO THE ADULT. This work is devoted to the discussion of outcomes, placed into a historical perspective. It reviews virtually all surgical and catheter-based strategies to enhance outcomes of all forms of congenitally malformed hearts. It analyses these outcomes by era, discussing those issues that were germane to evolving different therapeutic strategies. It discusses those complications of the various forms of therapies and identifies particular risk factors for mortality and morbidity.Much of the data is based on the cardiacrecords of the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children. These results are discussed in comparison to similar studies published from all the major institutions devoted to the care of neonates, infants and children with congenital heart disease. This work focuses on the morphology of the particular congenital cardiac abnormality as it influences outcomes; the genetics and mode of transmission, and most importantly fetal and post-natal outcome.

1.Focuses on morphology, genetics, and outcomes of congenital heart disease, both natural and modified, from the fetus to the adult

2.Discusses outcomes by era, reviewing in detail, evolving strategies to enhance outcomes and provides Kaplan-Meier curves for survival and freedom from re-intervention for most forms of congenital heart disease.Discusses in depth risk factors for adverse outcomes

3.Exhaustive in scope of topics covered and bibliography. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the MUST READ books in pediatric cardiology!!!
This book gives a nice historical perspective of each of the common lesions a pediatric cardiologist faces in daily practice. It will take you through the morphology of each lesion, the diagnostic tools used, the available treatment options, the short-term and long-term outcomes, and survival curves.

Upon reading each chapter, you have a comprehensive understanding of why we manage certain diseases the way we do today. I think it's important to know what had been tried previously and what failed so that the field can continue to advance. If you want a book citing multicenter clinical trials and to tell you the advantages of an ACE-I over ARB in heart failure, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a read that will strengthen your true understanding of the cardiac conditions we treat and how we arrived to where we are today, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK. ***IF YOU ARE A PEDIATRIC CARDIOLOGY FELLOW, THIS IS A MUST READ***

2-0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought at first... but still not good
The information contained in the book is somewhat interesting, and exhaustive in scope. It is best used as a "history book" without clinical applications. This is not how I interpreted the title and was hoping for more information about the natural course of CHD and how our approaches and diagnostic abilities have modified that. That being said, even with the "history book" approach, I think this is still a fair book (at best). There too many things to consider when putting together a book with such lofty goals of the title, and, perhaps it is impossible to actually achieve those goals. This book tries to be so comprehensive that it becomes incomprehensible. It is EXTREMELY confusing in the way it is presented. This detracts significantly from what you can actually get out of the book.Dr. Freedom clearly knows what he is talking about, but he could have found a much better way to convey it.
And last, but not least, with all due respect to Dr. Freedom, the editing in this book is AWFUL!!!Too many mistakes to count in EACH chapter, wrong diagrams/labels.This book would barely be passable if written by an individual who did not speak English as a primary language. ... Read more
