5-0 out of 5 stars Gastrointestinal Health by Miskovitz
This is an excellent medicinal reference on the workings of the
gastrointestinal system. The book is written from the perspective
of conventional medicine. It discusses classic gastrointestinal
issues; such as, difficulty in swallowing, gas, non-cardiac
discomfort, chest pain, nausea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and constipation. Abdominal pain on the left side is associated with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Pain on the right
side of the abdomen may be Crohns related. Diarrhea and rectal
bleeding are the classic symptoms of Crohns disease. The CT scan,
MRI, endoscopy and colorectal examinations are the classic
invasive techniques for detection. Non-invasive tests involve
analysis of the breath, blood tests, stool and fecal occult exams. Duodenal ulcers are caused by H-pylori. Standard treatments are H2 blockers, pepcid AC and proton pump inhibitors.
Prilosec is a classic proton inhibitor.

The work is a must for any health enthusiast. The problems
described are classic middle-age conditions encountered by
large portions of the population for a variety of reasons
ranging from genetics to junk food consumption. The work is
a solid investment for the price charged. Acquiring this volume will help you to discuss any of the symptomatology intelligently
with your primary care physician or medical specialist. ... Read more

The book was OK but I knew most of the information. It looked to the medical field for the answers rather than diet, which is my view of helping the hiatel hernia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend it!
Great book!Very informational and worth the read.I keep it around to refresh my memory.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book gives a postive outlook for hiatal hernia and acid reflux sufferers
I bought this book because I myself have a hiatal hernia and suffer from acid reflux because of it. I give this book a high rating because the author seems to know what he's talking about when it comes to hiatal hernias. It helped me understand what is going on in my body with the hiatal hernia, and he lists ways that can help relieve symptoms caused by it. The book is overall very positive about how to cope with a hiatal hernia and acid reflux disease. I found it to be very comforting and helpful, especially the section where he talks about real life cases of people with different symptoms and stories. I would have liked more detail on the section where he talks about ways to heal, but overall it is very positive and will at least give a sufferer some options and comfort. ... Read more

It's hard to believe that so much really useful information can fit into such a slender volume! This book should be required reading for every hernia patient. If I'd had this book 4 months ago I might not be facing surgery #2 right now.Since a lot of surgeons aren't great at communicating, this book is invaluable for filling in the gaps and helping you determine what questions to ask.The only downside is that it's about a decade old--I'd like to see the publisher commission an updated edition covering latest advances in repair techniques.

Product Description

Even the best hernia repair can result in postoperative difficulties for the patient caused by repair sequelae as for example pain, infertility, infection, adhesion and dislocation of the protheses. That can happen many years later and now, where the general principle of hernia repair is well understood all over the world, these sequelae are noticed more and more. To define them, to evaluate the absolute and relative risk of these sequelaes and to describe the ways of their prevention, diagnosis and treatment, the 5th Suvretta meeting had focussed on this subject. We discussed if there’s a principle risk by technique, material or both. The results of these discussions and the future handling and evaluation of this problem was the aim of this meeting. Even the best method can be made better by optimization of its single components.

Product Description

Incisional hernia surgery has witnessed an important progress over the last years, not only as far as the pathophysiological and etiopathogenetic aspects are concerned, but also from a technical point of view.

Thanks to the recent findings on genetical disorders of the collagen, incisional hernia is today considered a true "disease of the abdominal wall". Surgeons need to be aware of all the different repairing techniques, in order to make an elective choice and to keep side effects and recidives under control. Today, on the basis of the most recent research on synthesis of collagen and collagenolysis, the treatment of the incisional hernia should not disregard the use of synthetic prostheses and of biomaterials, both in the routinal surgical practice and in the most complex clinical cases.

Surgeons, surgical residents, and medical students will find this volume very useful in their daily practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read for anyone with HH
Hiatal Hernia was found when I had a CT scan for something else.So I found Dr Baroody's book very informative and helpful, to say the least. He takes the trouble to explain everything well and gives you ways to relieve and help this dreadful condition.I give this book a 5 star but can't for the life of me understand why they are charging so much here for it.One only needs to contact Holographic Health Inc, 800-566-1522or [...] and 11.95 for the book. Its a real shame some take advantage of others pain. The book is great but not for what they charge here.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Really Works!
My teenage daughter and I both had digestive problems that were diagnosed as Hiatal Hernia Syndrome. We didn't want to take medicine or consider surgery, so we consulted a Holographic Health chiropractor who recommended techniques in this book.We both greatly improved, so we got the book and now know what to do for ourselves whenever symptoms arise. The main technique is a simple manuever to move the diaphragm downward (we wondered why our doctor didn't know that).

This book is paperback and still in print, and is available new from Holographic Health for $11.95.I don't know why it would be more.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works!
Most opinions seem to either criticize or laud the holistic approach of this book.I believe there's a balance between the two - while I am presently taking a prescription medication for GERD (that only seems to work moderately), I have had unbelievable relief from a chiropractor that used the methods in Chap. 34.I've been able to control a crisis with the instructions for helping yourself in that chapter. The exercise and diet recommended are working for me as well as the stress reduction techniques. If there's a way to HEAL my problem and not just cover it over with medication for years and years, I can't understand why anyone wouldn't at least try it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Little help found from this book
I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia in Jan 2003.I ordered this book with the hope of finding and alternative treatment for healing.I was very disappointed to say the least.

This book mainly consists of theories that hiatal hernia CAUSES other conditions, from arthritis to ear infections, with little to no scientific evidence to back it up.

The "treatment" section describes ways to "push down" the stomach, as well as a yoga move (which is a good exercise...but you don't need this book for that). In one chapter he recommends using a wooden egg on yourself to force the stomach down into position. He assumes throughout this book that a hiatal hernia "pinches" the vagus nerve (a nerve that runs through the body) that it must cause every other condition known to man. It's almost enough to make me a hypochondriac.

Instead of this book, I recommend the "Positive Options" book since it provides clear, concise explanation of what Hiatal Hernia is, how it is treated, and what options exist for surgery.

Do not buy into this witch doctor's theories.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cure for Hiatal Hernia
I have not read this book but after seeing the above reviews I wanted to say that I have just been to a Chiropractor today and he pushed down my severe hiatus hernia and the reason I come up with for having it is severe stress and bad diet. This guy seems to know what he is talking about.Doctors just give you pills and twist stomachs.I will be getting this book ... For over two years I suffered curious constipation (even though I drank lots of water and got at least 30 grams of fiber a day) and a strange and sometimes painful swelling above and to the right of my pubic bone.I also had infrequent right side pain and infrequent right testicle discomfort.Sure, I went to doctors and complained and sought assistance, but the side pain was tossed off as indigestion and the testicle pain only brought a painful 10 minute hands on examination consisting of squeezing and turning my testes. Finally, the discomfort above my pubic bone was termed "nothing unusual" even though I told my physician that, every time I had a bowel movement, I could feel what felt like a string being plucked in that area as everything was evacuating.... ... We bought this book used when we were expecting our second child. He had been pre-diagnosed through ultrasound has having Left-sided diaphragmatic hernia. This book is the only book that has any information about this defect. My husband and I read it thoroughly. It is rather old but if you are expecting a cdh baby and want to read the history of the treatment and how far medical science has come (at least up to the point when this book was published) while you are waiting, this would be a good book.I must interject here that if you doctor has told you there is no hope (and most doctors still believe there isn't) don't listen to him/her.Get educated and help your baby.It won't be perfect but it will likely be better than the doctor says. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars [...] Book Review
Medical Science Books Medical Book Review:

In the forward of the book, Dr. Robert Bendavid quotes, "Hernias present us with the unusual paradox that a cure exits, but this cure can be fickle and elusive." This statement has special meaning for all that have struggled to repair hernias with the hope of restoring our patients to normal activities.

This book focuses on hernia infections. In the United States alone, more than 700,000 inguinal hernias and more than 50,000 ventral hernias are repaired. Most of these repairs are done with a prosthetic mesh reinforcement of the hernia defect. Infection rates are between 1 and 4 %, therefore, more than 20,000 hernia patients this year will suffer from an infection. Some infections may cause severe disability leading to further surgery for repair and possibly mesh removal. The cost to the individual patient can be significant, in terms of time off from normal activities, time off from normal work and surgical/hospital fees.

This book is well written and easy to read. Master surgeons from around the world authored each chapter and are relevant to the practicing surgeon. The book gives practical advice on how to prevent postherniorrhaphy infections. Chapters 1 -3 describe the importance of aseptic techniques, clearly defines what a surgical site infection (SSI) is and explains how to diagnosis a superficial or deep incisional infection after hernia repair. Chapters 4 - 6 discuss the importance of the wound environment and the effect different mesh products have on wound healing, bacterial colonization and possibly mesh infection. These chapters are interesting in that they describe the normal host reaction to the foreign material and how this "substratum" can become infected. Mesh is usually infected from the outer edges where the knots of the suture are applied to secure the mesh in place. The type of mesh material used, the mesh's pore size, as well as the type of sutures used in the repair of hernias all have an effect on the rate of wound infection.

Chapter 7 describes the current diagnostic techniques used to identify infections from physical exam to the liberal use of ultrasound and CT scans. These modalities are relied upon to diagnosis patients with both acute and chronic wound infections. Chapter 8 explains the use of diagnostic techniques after open repairs and chapter 9 describes the techniques after laparoscopic hernia repairs.

The last few chapters 10 through 12, describe the treatment of post operative hernia infections. The advice is practical and gives the surgeon options for management of these complicated patients. Chapters 10 and 11 discuss the treatment of infected patients after hernia repair. The authors offer advice on when infected mesh should be removed and how it may possibly be saved. They expand on the definitions and science that was presented in the first half of the book. Chapter 12 discusses the use of absorbable mesh in closing infected abdominal wound defects. These chapters again highlight the importance of diagnosis of infection and identification of the bacterial source. The importance of wound ultrasound (after having surgically removed a piece of infected mesh several months previously) in identification of fluid collections and techniques of draining and treating these fluid collections can reduce the incidence of infection of the subsequent hernia repair. The last chapter summarizes the basic principles of surgery in order to prevent and reduce the incidence of wound infections.

Overall, this is a well-written book with current references. The book is practical for the everyday-practicing surgeon. The goal of this book, to decrease and potentially eliminate post herniorrhaphy infection, will be met if readers apply the principles discussed. This book is highly recommended.
