Product Description
To celebrate the 50th Anniversary and the 500th issue of the French film journal Positif--voilà! What could satisfy the cinephile more than an anthology, in English, of the very best Positif articles from the last five decades? A preeminent film magazine since its inception, the monthly Positif has always been at the forefront of critical thought, discerning trends in cinema as they are happening. With over 40 articles covering some of the most notable films of the past 50 years, this compendium reveals how the magazine accomplished that very feat throughout its existence. Read Bernard Chardère on Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados, Paul-Louis Thirard on Maurice Burnan, Robert Benayoun on Frederico Fellini, and other critics on flicks from The African Queen and Hiroshima mon Amour to Reservoir Dogs and Fanny and Alexander. With an introduction by Michel Ciment, the editor of the magazine, and articles by distinguished critics and practitioners, this compilation pays tribute to both the importance of films and the lasting value of Positif.

Edited by Lawrence Kardish.
Essays by Bernard Chadère, Jacques Demeure, Michel Subiela, Paul-Louis Thirard, Roger Tailleur, Ado Kyrou, Bernard Pingaud, Bertrand Tavernier, Jean-Paul Török, Robert Benayoun, Louis Seguin, Michel Pérez, Frédéric Vitoux, Lorenzo Codelli, Alain Garsautl, Jacques Goimard, Michel Sineux, Michael Henry, Gérard Legrand, Isabelle Jordan, Jacques Segond and Petr Kral

5-0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, entertaining read
This is a nice little collection of writings from the influential French film journal, Positif. There are a good range of articles all the way from Neo-realism and new wave to a review of Lynch's "Lost Highway". The book is aimed at popular consumption with it's sprinkling of photos and its handsome layout, as opposed to a more scholarly anthology of critical writings. This book is perfect for fans of the cinema that enjoy occasional criticism without getting into the really theoretical stuff. It's definitely a nice addition to the ubiquitous Ebert or Maltin review book. It's also interesting to see the reception history of classic films - as we know, not every masterpiece was treated as such from the beginning. The articles are fairly short ranging from two to four pages - perfect for picking it up for a quick, enjoyable read. If I have one criticism it's that I would have enjoyed more essays. The publisher should issue a second volume.

By the way - the image Amazon displays is not the actual cover of the book. I have no idea why this picture is here. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Herpes A Nutritional Approach
Herpes A Nutritional Approach gives a good but short overview of the subject. In just 31 pages the reader receives a lot of summarized information. The reader looking for facts and definitions should besatisfied. However, the reader looking for more in-depth information wouldprobably not be satisfied with this book alone.

The first part of thebook briefly covers what herpes is, the types, the causes and how itdevelops. The section on herbs is more extensive and gives a good overviewon which herbs, vitamins and minerals are recommended to boost the immunesystem and soothe the condition. This is the part of the book i found themost interesting.

The last section gives a very short case history andrecipes. I was surprised however to read recipes using ingredients i hadpreviously read should be avoided. In other books nuts, peas and brusselssprouts were said to be avoided or consumed with moderation. Thesecontradictions were therefore rather confusing.

All by all, consideringthe price, the book does give a quick overview and covers the main aspectsof a nutritional approach. I preferred Controlling Herpes Naturally byMichele Picozzi which covers the same subjects more fully and with a lotmore detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars It WORKS!!
First, I am the type of person that nothing ever works on me...not even prescription drugs.
I either get a reaction or doesn't work as designed or it simply doesn't work.
This isn't a slam against the industry, as there are alot of good drugs doing alot of good for alot of people. I seem to be a person who falls into the small print.

So, I decided to take an active role in the management of my health.

I purchased this book to find a formula for topical pain gel/lotion/cream.
Though the ingredients can be expensive, it beats the cost of injections for pain and the common side-effects.

I made the exact mixture, applied it to my lower back and felt immediate relief...for days.

I gave a sample to my skeptical-Mom and she used it on her hands and knees (she has osteo-arthritis).
She, too, had immediate relief that lasted for days.
She was AMAZED!

Even though she gets knee injections (with some success) a couple of times of year...the effects no longer last until her next scheduled injection.

I gave some to my friend, who has heel spurs...yep, worked for him, too (though not as much).
Try it for yourself.
Note: Book included links for further reading/research which are very, very technical.
I haven't tried any of the other formulas.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
Stephen Martin was a great man.Sadly he passed away a few months ago.I have a background in the sciences, and I can attest that this man knew what he was writing about. He had a PhD from Berkeley in immunology, I believe, and ran a website that looked at recent medical research concerning cancer, infectious disease, MS, heart disease, HIV and a host of other serious medical maladies, and applied the knowledge listed there with treatments available without a prescription, or, on occasion, with prescription medication that was widely available and generally reasonably priced.

There was no one else like Dr. Martin. He knew that many people suffer from serious diseases, and just couldn't wait for the pharmaceutical industry to slowly push drugs through clinical trials. There might not be enough time.

Did he cure anyone?I don't know, but I do know that he provided hope, and more than a few people believed his approach was medically valid.

He never made much money from his efforts, and that's a shame. When he passed away, the patient community lost one of its biggest advocates and best source of cutting-edge research.

He will be greatly missed. This book is one of the last things he has left us.Because of that, it's a treasure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book if over priced
This book provided a wonderful recipe for topical Naproxen that I use on a regular basis. The information in it seems to be good information. If I have any complaints it is due to the expense of the book.I would imagine that the low volume per unit publishing costs for such a small run, even with such a small book (< 30 pages) are pretty bad.But even with that, this book is way over priced. That is the reason I gave three stars instead of five. The publisher obviously took "whatever the market can bear" to the hilt.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent results
I have been using topical caffeine, carnatine melatonin and green tea extract for my male pattern baldness and senile alapecia as recommended by Dr. Martin in this book. I am 69 years old and I've been battling this problem for the past 10 years or more. My results with Dr. Martin's recommendation have been excellent. After four months, my hair is much thicker. I plan to use these products indefinitely since I am very fond of my hair and determined to keep it. I had a compounding pharmacist make these products for me.

I used Minoxidil for about a year but had to stop it because I became allergic to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain Relief for Pennies
I'm a nutritionist, and this quickly became one of the most important books in my library!I've used the recipes in the book to help friends and family members who are in pain, along with using it on myself, and it works *fabulously* well!!!

The problem with over-the-counter NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) like aspirin, Naproxen (Aleve) and Ibuprofen (Advil) is that with regular use, they often cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcerations, and/or perforations (with or without pain). If you were able to apply the above NSAIDs topically, you could totally avoid that problem ... which is exactly what I did when I made the pain-relief recipes in this book ... for just pennies!!!

I often tell my clients that whethere it's their nutrition or diet, "one size does not fit all."The same holds true for pain relief. What's incredibly cool about this book is that there are a *number* of approaches/solutions/recipes that can be tried. So if one recipe doesn't work to your liking, either try a different one or try adjusting the ingredient amounts. As an example, I found I got better (faster) pain relief when I increased the amount of Naproxen in the recipe.

Analgesic (pain relief) formulas are only one part of what is covered in the book. There are also some excellent recipes for men (and WOMEN!) suffering from hair loss, cold sores, and genital herpes.

The book is only about 38 pages long, but don't let that fool you.At 30 bucks, it's a steal!!!

When you're making pain relief formulas for yourself, please consider making extra and passing it out to friends and family who suffer from chronic pain.I can think of no greater gift or act of humanity. And if you find value in this book, consider supporting the site and man responsible for writing the book ... Stephen Martin and [...] ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective and affordable
This is the most relevant approach to controlling herpes that I have found.Anyone can follow her program.Ms Picozzi reviews how to bolster the immune system through diet, stress management, exercise. The overall result is a healthier body and immune system. After a number of years of searching for a resource that is concise, useable and effective, this book is well worth the money.Thank you Michele!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and thorough source for alternative therapies
This book lives up to its title of taking a "holistic approach" as it promotes a dozen or more alternative therapies to prevent and heal outbreaks.

When this book was published there was very little scientific research available on specific treatments for herpes except for one drug, so I didn't expect to find much in the way of research study citations to support the validity of most of the alternative therapies discussed here.

However, the author does a good job of providing credible sources and important information throughout the book, whether it be about statistics, prevention strategies, early warning signs, who gets herpes or drug-free remedies, including the familiar amino acid lysine.

Any health practitioner will tell you the key to avoiding future outbreaks is to keep the immune and nervous systems healthy, which is exactly what this book tells you how to do in a clear, straightforward manner.

Its very good and very oh so helpful its the first book that I have read that really addresses the PROBLEM instead of making it worse. Its worth it, to avoid an outbreak every so often ... Read more

100. Lack of impact of varicella vaccination on incidence of herpes zoster

Product Description
Abstract: Herpes zoster (HZ) develops in 10-30% of patients infected with varicella-zoster virus (VZV). A decline in cell-mediated immunity is believed to be important in the reactivation of this virus. Since varicella vaccine became available, the incidence of natural varicella infection has declined by 75-80%. Lack of exposure to natural infection eliminates a source of immunity boosting, and there has been concern that rates of HZ would consequently increase. Since 1998, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Group Health Cooperative in the state of Washington have collaborated to monitor rates of varicella and HZ. Jumaan and colleagues (2005) examined the rates of primary varicella infection and HZ before vaccine licensure (1992-1995) and after vaccine licensure (1996-2002). The study population consisted of persons enrolled in the Group Health Cooperative at any point during January 1992 through December 2002. ... Read more
