5-0 out of 5 stars My blood pressure went down by 20 points
I actually starting using the Dash diet and some of the supplements, not all. In a few days my blood pressure started to go down dramatically. It's amazing how much salt there is in everything. You really have to read labels and of course a lot more fruits and veggies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great information
All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally knowing what was wrong and how to fix it
Reading this book was life changing for me.Finally I got an explanation for what happened to me and how I can fix it.In a matter of a couple of months, I went from being a fit size 4 to gaining 35 pounds and a huge belly plus having high blood pressure and high blood sugar for the first time in my life.In my HMO, my doctor simply told me I'm aging, I'm 'not that overweight,' avoid sodium and quit worrying. She would not put me on B P meds or send me to an endocrinologist as I'd requested. This went on for years and eventually I was hospitalized with very high blood pressure. I felt desperate. In reading this book I finally found out why and how I can help myself. And so I am. Already I've lost 18 pounds, changed my diet and started exercising again. My blood pressure has dropped like a stone, muscle mass is revitalizing and so is my energy levels.Skillfully written for the laymen, this book is very absorbable and should be read by all adults.

Dr. Whitaker explains the Real danger regarding hypertension. My own doctor after seeing me once prescribed two powerful medications to "hook" me on for life.Nothing was said to me about alternatives, just take these medications. After reading this book, I am exercising more, eating better and on my way to being medication free.

If you have mild to moderate hypertension, read this before deciding to take those perscriptions.

Product Description

More than 50 million Americans suffer from high blood pressure, and most of them control it by taking prescription drugs with potentially dangerous side effects. But there is a natural, affordable, and easy-to-manage alternative to medication: the DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet. Developed by a world-class team of doctors and nutritionists, the DASH diet is clinically proven to lower blood-pressure levels and thereby reduce the risk of heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease. Now, with The DASH Diet for Hypertension, readers can benefit from:

• A hearty and healthful selection of DASH menus, recipes, even grocery lists

• DASH weight-loss and exercise programs for everyday living

• The science behind DASH, including calorie worksheets and a formula to calculate body-mass

...and much more from this revolutionary program, which is recommended by the American Heart Association; the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute; the American Society for Hypertension; and other leading medical authorities.Amazon.com Review
The DASH Diet for Hypertension, recommended by the American Heart Association, has been shown in studies to lower blood pressure in two weeks without the use of drugs. The DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy; includes moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and nuts; and reduces consumption of red meat and sweets. Studies from the National Institutes of Health followed 800 participants and found that the DASH diet lowered blood pressure as much as typical medication.

This is no quirky diet--it's the way the major medical groups have been advising us to eat all along, but with a specific formula that tells you how many servings to eat from each Food Pyramid food group. You also get suggestions for exercising moderately, losing weight, reducing salt, and food shopping.

Included are two weeks of daily menus and 62 recipes, with modified favorites like Macaroni and Cheese and Sweet and Sour Pork with Vegetables, plus innovative dishes such as Mango/Black Bean Salad with Grilled Shrimp and Sweet-Potato Chips (baked). The authors are medical hypertension experts associated with Harvard and Duke medical centers. Recommended for people who want to lower their blood pressure or just eat more healthfully. --Joan Price ... Read more

Very complete description of the history of the diet, the results, and how to implement it.It worked for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars God sent
yes this diet really is God sent, it has the power to change one's whole physical constitution and adds strength to the whole body. Thank you

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
This book is a great place to start when you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and decide you want to do something about it. Helpful, logical information presented in a very useable format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great read (with an error)
I found this book to be a great read.It was very informative about the background of the DASH diet and some of the results. Although there may be versions of this book that are corrected, the chart that shows the columns of the number of servings of grains and meat are switched. With careful reading of the supporting pages, this is seen. This confused me for a while.

Serving size was confusing and incomplete. The other book that I purchased (DASH Diet Action Plan) helped clarify some of the confusions, but this book (The Dash Diet for Hypertension) is overall more informative.

The diet fits me very well as a 57 year old male.I found (find) it difficult to eat all of the food for my calorie range. Also, I am doing some strength training, thus increasing the protein somewhat to support it.I have followed it about a month now with little change in my BP.However, I have lost 5 lbs.

I had been looking for a plan that was healthy, did not leave me hungry, and that I could live on for the rest of my life. This is it!

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Have Hypertension You Need to Be DASHING
Hypertension kills. Suffering a stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, or damage to your eyes should be enough to get anyone to change their bad habits and get their lifestyle on track with the DASH diet. There is nothing difficult about eating fresh fruits instead of cookies or candy, and making fresh salads and cooking fresh vegetables instead of opening up a can of soggy, sodium laden mush passing as food.

Believe it or not, I told MY doctor about the DASH diet when I first got diagnosed with high blood pressure about 10 years ago. She'd never heard of it. I was only 34 but African Americans seem to have a higher rate of hypertension than any other ethnic group. My blood pressure was an unbelievable 170/110 but I had no symptoms at all. Fearful of medications, but even more fearful of dying, I looked for an alternative solution that would provide fast results, and happened across the DASH study results.

I ordered two booklets from the NHLB website and started changing my life.

When I went back for a checkup a month later, my blood pressure had dropped an amazing 32 points systolic and was within the normal range of 138/85.She was stunned and ran from the room with the booklet I gave her to show other doctors in the office. They were in disbelief and actually came in to talk to me about the program. My blood pressure continued to drop once I got a better handle on sodium and liquor intake until it reached normal where it now stays unless I go off on a tangent too many days in a row.

This was accomplished without any medication, just a steely determination to live which meant giving up things I shouldn't have been eating anyway. The book is great because it goes into a great deal of explanation and provides menu ideas to get you started.

If you can't afford to order the book right now, at least look on the web and review the online documents which support changing your eating habits per the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The DASH diet saved my life. ... Read more

A PIONEERING APPROACH TO OVERCOMING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

If you are one of the millions of people diagnosed with high blood pressure, this groundbreaking book can change your life. Unique in combining a medical and a psychological approach, Samuel J. Mann, M.D., explains:

  • How you can tell whether or not your high blood pressure is related to emotions
  • How to find the medication best suited for you, and when to reduce or eliminate unnecessary medication
  • How exploring "hidden" or repressed emotions can reduce your blood pressure and the need for medication

Featuring compelling and instructive case histories as well as the latest medical research, Healing Hypertension can help you make sense of your high blood pressure while offering new choices for controlling it.

"In Healing Hypertension, Dr. Samuel Mann pushes the boundaries of medicine by demonstrating the emotional components of hypertension, one of the most serious health problems of our day. Healing Hypertension shows that it is not enough to attend to our physical bodies; we must look to our emotional life as well if we expect to be healthy and whole. This is an immensely important book."
-Larry Dossey, M.D., A
Author of Healing Words and Reinventing MedicineAmazon.com Review
"It is our hidden emotions, the emotions we do not feel, thatlead to hypertension," writes Samuel J. Mann, M.D.,physician/researcher and Associate Professor at the HypertensionCenter at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. "Becomingaware of our hidden emotions and dealing with them can enable bothphysical and emotional healing," he adds.

Hypertension, commonlyknown as high blood pressure, affects 50 million Americans and promptsmore doctor visits than any other medical condition. In HealingHypertension, Mann explains how you can tell if hidden emotionsare instrumental in your hypertension (they may not be, if yourcondition is mainly genetic), and if so, how you can get on the pathto healing. Some clues that you may be burdened by hidden emotionsinclude emotional trauma that you think is behind you, a habit of notfeeling unwanted emotions, a history of emotional isolation, andchildhood abuse or severe family dysfunction. Mann also brieflydiscusses how hidden emotions can affect other medical conditions suchas back pain, headaches, and anxiety disorders. He spends most of thebook helping you see that hidden emotions may be affecting yourhypertension. The last few chapters address where you can go fromthere. Numerous case histories personalize the information. --JoanPrice ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Zero hype, great discussion and insight
(Note: for me, five stars is reserved for something truly mind-blowing -- I haven't given one yet.Four stars for me is a really, really good rating.)

This book has a great story to tell about how many instances of high blood pressure are attributable to repressed emotions. The author is a careful scientist, and clearly identifies how his conclusions arise from information that is in some sense anecdotal. He also is careful to note that only some hypertension can be so attributed, and how drugs are still a very important tool in regulating this problem.I was pleased to read a down-to-earth book on hypertension that did not pretend to have all the answers.

Having said all that, it turns out that the main hypothesis presented in the book did not apply to me, so the book did not provide a non-drug solution for me.Though that's not the fault of the book. The book did have an excellent section on the drugs that are used, what they do and how they work (to the extent we know), and what considerations are used in selected drugs.I use one of them now (lisinopril), which easily and completely controls my hypertension with a relatively low dose and no apparent side effects.

The writing at times can be redundant and repetitive, but the good parts are the actual case histories that are described.I recommend this book for anyone who would like to get some real information about hypertension without someone trying to sell you something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent medical resource book
Great information about hypertension cause and effects and treatment available.Well written. The case studies were facinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Hypertension by Mann
Hypertension is inferred from a blood pressure level of 140/90
or higher. Once diagnosed, it is necessary for a physician or
medical provider to probe hidden emotions which may underlie the
chronic nature of hypertension. Biofeedback and relaxation techniques may reduce hypertension to within manageable ranges.
With the reduction of hypertension will come a lower blood pressure. Heart conductance disturbances may be managed by drinking less coffee and alcohol. IBS in women can come from sex abuse at
some stage. Brain hypertension may come from the sympathetic nervous system, noradrenalin receptors or artery constriction.
This book is not a cure-all; however, the author provides
rational reasons and alternatives to manage hypertension constructively.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Advice in this Book Really Works
I have had a problem with white coat hypertension for a long time. I read this book and following hisadvice regarding the problem of not dealing with hidden emotions has resolved my problem that I thought I could never overcome. I strongly recommend this book especially if you feel that you really don't have hypertension and are just very nervous when your blood pressure is taken.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eminently helpful
This is one of the best books I've ever read on hypertension. Dr. Mann's style is gentle and knowing, and he makes the concepts easy to understand. And whether your high blood pressure is linked to your repressing your emotions or not, the latter part of the book offers an excellent overview of treatment options. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall complete and easy to understand, though repetitive and confusing at times
As a med student at UW-Madison, our class is the pilot class for this text. It reads like a first edition text with several authors/contributors, and lacks the consistency in authorship, style and prose that I have appreciated in books like Robbin's Pathophysiology or Guyton's Medical Physiology.

Overall, the book reads smoothly enough and gets the point across well enough for you to leave with a good understanding of renal pathophysiology. However, you will find sections of the book repetitive or quite simply confusing due to multiple authorship (the confusing portions are relatively few, but very frustrating). We have encountered a few inaccurate statements as well. I think they could have spent more time editing it and the book could easily be 50 pages shorter and still do a good job of teaching with less confusion.

On the plus side, they have some nice diagrams/pictures and little blue/gray boxes that summarize entire pages. This can be helpful for when you are trying to remember what you just spent the last 10 minutes reading after getting bogged down in the details, but can also be pointless and just a list of words with little meaning.

Should you buy the book? If your class is relying on it heavily like ours, yes. If you are a book learner, this could be a good text for you. However, Big Robbins has a nice section on Renal pathophysiology that could be a sufficient resource for you too. If the book got the confusing parts cleaned up, had more consistency in style, and shortened to avoid repetition it would be a 4-5 star text.

2-0 out of 5 stars eh...
this book isn't very good.each chapter has different authors and thus a different feel due to different writing styles, so there's not really continuity.the objectives are over simplified.the "organization" within the chapters doesn't provide much of a scaffold to try to arrange the info in your head, so you'll spend more time than usual going over and over the same ideas to parse it out on your own.important ideas aren't framed well, they're just sort of randomly strewn about.the images reviewing basic physiology are quite confusing.the summary boxes that are intended to be useful quick reference are neither.i'm sure subsequent editions will be better as the authors have been receptive to feedback, but save your $ and get a different renal book for now. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Dash Diet Action Plan Review from Amazon shopper
Good common sense book reminds reader of things they should already know and if not, then it gives a fairly decent outline of the plan. Personally I prefer a more flexible eating style and am unable to consume a few key food items due to allergies, which is not addressed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diet for life
This is a review for the kindle edition of the Dash-diet action plan. I was afraid that the screen would not be user friendly for charts and forms. Fortunalety, the author directs you to a web page from which you can print all forms and get copies of the most important reminders and charts.
I found this book well made. Those who prefer to follow a 28 days diet sheet, will find it on Chapter 3, with different levels of calory intakes (1200, 1600, 2000 calories). Otherwise, the author gives you all the tools to manufacture your own dash-friendly diet with the food you actually want to eat.
You will find chapters on nutrition, how to add more vegetables to your diet, exercice, recipes (with pictures but really, not as good on kindle than on a paper book) etc... Everything you need to turn your diet around. We perform according to the fuel we live on. This book should give you the tool to make better choices and maintain them over time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dash Diet Plan
My husband and I are both on this diet and loving it. My husband's blood pressure was "edging" up..now better after three weeks. We know his cholesterol is down.
The food is excellent...there is enough variation that you don't get bored. We plan on completeing the 4 week plan and just start over again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Greater Knowledge
Those suffering from Hypertension and its effects should study this book. Coming from a great source, the Bihar School of Yoga, and its great history of accredited doctors ie. Sivananda, Satyananda and many more, you are most likely to find some relief within this book. The author discusses, indepth, the scientific and medical causes of how Hypertension occurs, what feeds the problem and how the physical brain, the mind and body respond in such a state of crisis; and gives you (for those who need scientific proof) biographies throughout to put you at ease. As the text progresses the infinate system of Yoga is introduced and the reader is educated on how to overcome this disease with these marvelous techniques. Being a sufferer of Hypertension for many years, I can honestly say how these books and the information contained within has completely changed me for good. I no longer suffer from asthma, from horible digestion and from the depression that has held me in their grip for so long.

You will not get the supposed dogmatic practices said to accompany Yoga, but a system that can get you to the root of the cause and change the way you live for better.Enjoy. ... Read more

Product Description
An estimated 50 million Americans have high blood pressure, often called the "silent killer'' because it may not cause symptoms until the patient has suffered serious damage to the arterial system. It raises the risk of heart attacks, strokes, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, dementia and even blindness. That's a laundry list of horrors you want to avoid and so drug treatment should be an easy sell to the public. There is a massive campaign going on to educate the public to the NEW PARADIGM: "Early detection means early treatment and cure" -- just like with the American Cancer Society and the war on breast cancer. And like the war on breast cancer, it may turn out to just as disappointing. Early drug treatment may not work at all to reduce the mortality rate. It needs to be tried, however, IF they can find drugs that won't do more harm than good. Hypertension treatment is the same regardless of whether the problem is systolic or diastolic or both. But what if they have different mechanisms? Then you will need two drugs, which greatly increases your potential for serious side effects. Diet, exercise, potassium supplements chelation therapy and practically anything but drugs is the way to go in my opinion. We discuss alternatives in this report. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Be sure your bp is essential not secondary or it won't work
I had sudden onset hypertension about 2 months ago. I didn't want to go on any bp meds in fear of the horrible side effects. I followed every bit of protocol to the letter including vitamins, supplements, exercise and diet, and lost 16lbs in 2.5 weeks (which I had been trying to lose for years), and yet my bp kept climbing and climbing to 150/170 and 185 over 90-117 at its highest. I'm a tiny person, of 61 inches and 103lbs and couldn't lose anymore weight without looking anorexic, and yet I was an anomaly. They kept pushing the meds, and I kept pushing for more testing asking the cardiologist for tests that he should have ordered in the first place.Lucky for me I was my own advocate and had done a lot of reading. He finally ordered a renal sonogram, and it revealed a blocked artery to my kidney and yet, my renin wasn't elevated (which is a classic sign of renal artery stenosis).RAS is a secondary hypertension and only affects about 1-5% of all hypertensive cases. Renal hypertension is very difficult to manage with conventional meds and often requires 2-3 different meds. They had a hard time convincing me to even try one.I took the one they told me they prescribe to elderly people and pregnant women. Ha! Within 1 hour of taking it, I developed a migraine so bad, I had to lay down, and by the second hour, my bp had reached 220/125 the highest it has ever been.I went to the ER in fear of a stroke.the only remedy for RAS is either take the meds or do angioplasty - neither of which makes me happy since I'm allergic to dyes. They suggested an MRA with gadolinium to confirm the diagnosis, and I have a fear of the gadolinium since there are no guarantees of not having an anaphylactic reaction (although they claim they are rare - and i am hypersensitive to drugs - so it's risky). If you have any kind of kidney disease you should not have the gadolinium either since it is contraindicated and can cause an incurable kidney nephrosis. So if you do all the right things, and your bp doesn't resolve by these methods, ask your dr for a renal sonogram.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you really want lower blood pressure, read, and follow directions.
It has taken a while to get necessary life style, and diet, with supplements in place -- it is worth the time and effort.
I have been able to rid myself of nasty "bp" drugs that did not work.I now have a "BP" of 110/70.I feel great. ... Read more

Product Description
Hypertension is a highly treatable risk factor for cardiovascular disease, yet it remains underdiagnosed, undertreated and, in many cases, poorly controlled. Sometimes dubbed 'the silent killer', hypertension rarely produces symptoms until it manifests as a heart attack of stroke. Early identification of the condition by routine blood pressure measurement and appropriate ongoing management are therefore vital. In this updated fourth edition of "Fast Facts: Hypertension", two authors of international renown provide a practical evidence-based approach to the diagnosis and management of the condition. The book provides a thorough overview of hypertension, covering: accurate measurement of blood pressure and problems such as 'white-coat' hypertension; routine assessments for people with high blood pressure; consideration of other modifiable risk factors - smoking, high cholesterol levels, etc; non-pharmacological measures that doctors can advise on - reduce salt, lose weight, increase physical activity, etc; up-to-date trial results on all the pharmacological options; and, special considerations for the treatment of children, pregnant women, the elderly and patients with diabetes.Primary care physicians have a leading role to play in screening for hypertension and ensuring that patients receive the most appropriate treatment. "Fast Facts: Hypertension" provides a concise readable refresher on this common and potentially devastating condition. ... Read more

This new revised and updated edition provides practical, up-to-date summaries on how to manage clinical hypertension in everyday practice. In addition to providing an overview of its epidemiology and pathophysiology, the book also contains focused reviews on various therapies and how to lower blood pressure through lifestyle changes. Specialist patient groups and hypertension during pregnancy are also discussed. Clinical hypertension, commonly known as 'high blood pressure', is a highly prevalent condition and is a major risk factor in cardiovascular disease. Hypertension has few symptoms and many patients will be unaware that they have the condition until complications occur. These complications include cerebrovascular disease, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, renal failure and retinopathy -- target organ damage. The benefit of treating systemic hypertension is now well established and it is now no longer a question of 'do we treat?" but 'who and how should we treat?' Clinical Hypertension in Practice will be of great value to general practitioners, hospital doctors and nurses working in cardiology, obstetrics and general practice, as well as to undergraduate and postgraduate students of medicine and pharmacy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars easy read of practical approach
this book presents some interesting concepts in a well written manner. It is a good primer for someone looking to make some practical lifestyle changes to deal with hypertension. It also gives pause for thought on how we deal with the stresses and joys in our daily lives.
    A good, quick read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This is just another "bandwagon" to already known ways to reduce blood pressure.
The biofeedback works -- but is very expensive.
The research used was limited to justify the "sales" of products not necessary to reduce blood pressure. Theydid not tell the entire story. Very incomplete.
I know this from personal experience.
I was disappointed in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Key to the Heart
...written in an understandable and interesting style, this book explains breathwork in a modern way with modern research.
