Product Description
The eighth edition of Clinical Management of Hypertension continues to update hypertension treatment recommendations with additions and interpretations of new data from treatment trials and guideline comittees. The management guidelines of the Seventh Joint National Committee (JNC) on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure are again reviewed and critiqued in view of new data since these were originally published in 2003. The validity of advising a thiazide diuretic as initial therapy is put in perspective. The 2007 European Society of Hypertension and Society of Cardiology guidelines and new treatment algorithms are also reviewed and evaluated. Recently introduced antihypertensive agents, such as a renin inhibitor and a beta blocker with nitric oxide-enhancing properties, as well as newer combination therapies, are discussed. Above all, this updated edition of Clinical Management of Hypertension sends a clear message that more individuals with hypertension, especially in the older age groups, shoud be treated; effective and safe treatment is available; and achieving levels of BP as close to normal as possible-120-130/80 mm Hg-will reduce morbidity and mortality to an even greater degree than has occured to date. ... Product Description
The treatment of hypertension is now evolving into a decision-making process of ever greater complexity. Not only has the range of drugs available increased but so too has our knowledge of the diversity of individual patients' responsiveness to therapy, and the need to tailor their treatment with reference to a wide variety of additional factors. In order to provide effective patient care, the clinician needs to be aware of all the options available, but also of the evidence supporting their use and the extent to which that evidence justifies the choices made. In this volume, leading authorities in their fields draw on the available evidence to provide answers to a series of key clinical questions facing the clinician treating hypertension. These include questions of definition; who do we treat, and when? Should we treat pre-hypertension? How does the choice of therapy change in the presence of comorbidities such as obesity, ischemic heart disease, left ventricular hypertrophy, diabetes or cerebrovascular disease? What is the optimal treatment of women in pregnancy? The book provides answers to these and many other questions, as the authors present an expert analysis of the available evidence and offer authoritative recommendations for treatment planning. In each chapter, tables highlight evidence from a variety of sources, and every chapter concludes with a series of key practice points that present a summary of evidence-based recommendations for best practice, graded according to the quality of that evidence. For any clinician concerned with the care of the hypertensive patient, this volume will be a valuable aid to treatment planning and long term management. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and easy-to-understand
Like millions of American men, I have been diagnosed with hypertension--high blood pressure. Well, I'm not one to take things lying down, so I set out to find a good book on the subject, and this is the book that I found. Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper is one of America's leading experts on preventative medicine, and this book is an absolute wonder!

Dr. Cooper begins the book by explaining what hypertension is and how it works, explaining everything about high blood pressure, including what the measurements (systolic and diastolic) actually mean. After that, he explains how the condition is treated, and what steps you can take, including exercise and diet.

Overall, I found this to be a great book. The author has an excellent way of unfolding the subject in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. I now understand so much more that I did just from talking to my doctor. So, let me just say that I love this book, and highly recommend it to anyone and EVERYONE who has been diagnosed with hypertension. This is the book to get!

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated. The copyright date shown is incorrect.
This book was published in 1996, not 2007 as shown by Amazon. It is outdated.A great deal has changed since this was written. At its time, it was good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview
This book is clear and easy to read.It presents an authoritavie overview of high blood pressure and what to do about it.The author seems to know what he is talking about and gives sound advice.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on high blood pressure
After reading many of the popular books on high blood pressure, I must rank this one the best. I was particularly happy with the chapter on "white coat hypertension" and blood pressuure measurement and the many related studies that he comments on. Many books tend to have just a paragraph on this subject and gloss over such an important issue. The chapter on the "work-up" was also very useful to me. Now I will feel much more comfortable about asking my own doctor about a renin-sodium profile and an echo-cardiogram to be included for me. I would have liked to see a discussion of the "uric-acid" debate. Perhaps the publication of the book predated this debate. I was also happy that he chose to have a separate chapter about high blood pressure in seniors. With a hyperensive 70 year-old mum to worry about, this chapter was a wonderful source of information. Like another reviewer, I felt the section on "Alternative Medicine" was relatively small and brusque. But in earlier sections Dr Pickering did consider the mineral supplement issues in depth - what he doesn't consider is whether one should be taking natural herb supplements. His discussion of meditation could be improved significantly. But a weak discussion of alternative medicine should not detract from an otherwise very useful and authoritative book. I hope Dr Pickering will give us an updated version of this book - and allow Dr Andrew Weil to write the section on alternative treatments

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, scientific, rational guide for the hypertensive
The first reviewer's comment that "The only thing that kept me from giving him a five-star rating is his negative reaction to alternative treatments" convinced me to buy this book. I was looking for a bookthat explains what medical science actually knows about high bloodpressure, and instead ran into a slew of "Smile your way out ofhypertension!" pseudo-scientific nonsensicals. Fie on so-called"alternative" treatments: I wanted to read solid knowledge. I wasrelieved and pleased to find this book. Pickering presents what isknown, describes tested treatments, is realistic about weight, exercise, and gender/race/age without being discouraging or fatalistic, and does itin a readable way. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is definitely worth reading
Dr. Pickering does a good job of explaining how your body works and its relationship to high blood pressure. He does a great job of interpreting conflicting studies. The only thing that kept me from giving him a fivestar rating is his negative reaction to alternative treatments. ... Read more

Product Description
Abstract:Three important principles have emerged from recent epidemiologic and clinical studies in hypertension. First, patients with hypertension most often have other cardiovascular risk factors such as obesity and diabetes. Second, hypertension remains grossly undertreated. Third, at blood pressure levels once considered “high-normal,” early organ damage may already be taking place in patients with multiple risk factors that, without treatment, can eventually lead to cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The concept of evaluating global or overall risk is gaining wide acceptance, and US treatment guidelines may soon reflect these findings and assist clinicians in identifying individuals who are most likely to benefit from therapy. Results from clinical trials suggest that among the various pharmacologic agents available to treat hypertension, blockers of the renin-angiotensin system are effective in type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease, conditions that often occur in conjunction with hypertension. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Better to learn to live WITHOUT high blood pressure
Learning how to take your own blood pressure at home has important information. Moreover, the advice in this book to lose weight and reduce sodium in your diet is good. However, lowering sodium without replacing it with potassium, i.e. increasing the ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, is often futile.People whose diet has a ratio of potassium to sodium over 4 (preferably over 10) almost never get hypertension.By contrast, the average American white has a dietary ratio of 0.6 and the average American black has a dietary ratio of only 0.38.
Unfortunately, the medical profession just can't bring itself to accept that this is the main answer to the plague of hypertension; and of course, the drug companies don't encourage that either.

The idea that psychological stress causes high blood pressure simply doesn't hold up.Provided the dietary ratio of potassium to sodium is above 4, populations with severe stress do not get high blood pressure.

Blacks should consider these simple facts; in rural Africa, blacks almost never get high blood pressure! The part of the world with the LOWEST incidence of both high blood pressure and strokes is West Africa!!! Although this is never mentioned (3 computer searches could not find a reference)in the medical literature, it IS well documented in the anthropology literature. Moreover, I have letters from three medical missionaries telling me their three clinics in Africa did not see a single case of high blood pressure during the last century.

What blacks, and all people, need to learn is how to live WITHOUT high blood pressure.High Blood Pressure is PREVENTABLE and (the medical profession doesn't agree with this) CURABLE since the cause IS known. You can find this information in both my book (The High Blood Pressure Solution) and in Dr. Julian Whitaker's book (Reversing Hypertension).

5-0 out of 5 stars All about the Silent Killer
High Blood Pressure (HBP) is an informative guide to living with
hypertension, the silent killer among African-Americans.
The guide is written in layman's terms and informs the reader of all
aspects of detection, treatment and management. The book allows the
reader an opportunity to learn how to take their own blood pressure
and how to purchase the equipment to monitor one's pressure at home.
HBP clearly outlines the complications from having uncontrolled blood
pressure. It concludes with sections on healthy eating and diet
modifications, stress management and the importance of having a
spiritual foundation in dealing with high blood pressure.

Reed and Hudson have written an easy to read book on a condition that
is treatable. It empowers the reader to become an active part of
their health plan. After reading this book, I made the necessary
calls to have my blood pressure checked.

Product Description
Ionic Transport in Hypertension is devoted to examining the hypothesis that essential hypertension is a heterogeneous disease in its pathophysiological mechanisms as well as in its clinical and therapeutic considerations. In recent years, there has been convincing evidence that alterations in the intracellular pool of ions, especially Na+ and Ca2+, may play a role in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension. This book considers research regarding abnormalities of transport pathways in cells (erythrocytes, leukocytes, platelets, smooth muscle cells) from both essential hypertensive patients and spontaneously hypertensive rats. It examines the relationship between abnormalities of Na+ transport function and the physiopathological mechanisms leading to high blood pressure. The important prognostic and therapeutic implications of the existence of separate clinical profiles among essential hypertensives based on abnormalities of the ion cellular metabolism are also discussed. The book will be an important reference for physiologists, membrane biologists, pharmaceutical researchers, and all scientists and clinicians involved in hypertension research. ... Read more
