The sixth edition of the Atlas of Hypertension builds on the tremendous success of earlier editions, but significant revision has been done since the last edition—a third of the chapters are new, and more than half of the chapters are written by new authors. Expanded topics include home blood pressure; secondary hypertension; information on newer agents such as nebivolol, aliskiren, and new vasopeptidase inhibitors; the possible role and pharmacology of renin inhibition; and American and European guidelines for antihypertensive treatment and their influence on physician practice. The striking, four-color format combined with the breadth of information it contains make this Atlas an invaluable resource for physicians, cardiologists, and all professionals involved in the study and treatment of hypertension.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Exercises Needed! - But Great Information
Although this book was not what I had expected it to be (i.e. a detailed book
with many pages devoted to breathing exercises e.g. paced breathing techniques etc)
I did not regret the purchase, in fact I was very impressed.

The reason why I rate this work so highly is because it offers a fresh perspective on
dealing with so called psychosomatic/psychophysiological ailments e.g. panic attacks, phobias
includingheadaches, migranes, hyperventilating, gasping for breath, Raynaud's condtions,
cold hands etc. The idea that irregular breathing patterns are at the heart of most disorders, although not surprising, is explained extremely well in terms of acid-base levels in the blood.

The primary topic dicussed in this book is hyperventilation. And as an Asthma sufferer I did
not think this work would be useful to me (since I usually struggle to get any air let alone overbreathe!), but I was very wrong!! This book was a great buy, because I now understand
the driving factors for my breathing difficulties from a scientific point of view.
    i.e. inhale/exhale ratios, CO2 levels, warms/cold hands etc.

I only have 2 criticisms, the last chapter about Music and Breathing seemed a little out
of place and mostly irrelevent. And secondly there isnt much on breathing techniques,
the only thing that is covered is deep diaphragmatic breathing (whist in the sitting position)
    - which is great if thats all you want!

    5 stars for information/nutrition/theory content
2 stars for practical exercises with deep breathing

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money this book is a fraud
I buy many books, never before gave up reading a book just within 30 minutes of browsing through various chapters looking for substance. I'm a person who has recovered from major depression which also entailed daily anxiety attacks and hyperventilation. I overcame my affliction by sheer will power through enormous love that I felt for my family and myself. I did that through redirecting my energy to change the things that I didn't like in my life. I also accomplished that through drastic change in my diet and through daily exercise for the last ten years. I was looking for a book to teach me better breathing, because by nature I'm a person who gets to excited in reaction to anything. This is a guy who one day decided to write a book by exploiting the most obvious things. The book is made of many anecdotes and repetition of many facts most people already know. Never before did I wish to return a book and ask for a refund. This time I do. This book will not go into my library, but it will go where my daily junk mail goes, the trash. .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good interdisciplinary book
This book is good because it emphasizes breathing techniques to attenuate stress-induced conditions (ex. Asthma, Anxiety). But again, as with most stress books, it falls short on recommending proper nutritional supplementation. Most Asthma books don't recommend any holistic/herbal remedies; they only recommend pharmaceutical drugs. A few Asthma books like these do recommend natural remedies, but these remedies are often unproven, and can be dangerous if mixed with other drugs/alcohol. I am really disappointed in all Asthma books in general, because they most often do not recommend the three most important ORTHOMOLECULAR Asthma remedies: Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C. Calcium is simply there to balance magnesium and to chelate with ascorbate (vitamin C) to make calcium ascorbate. Magnesium relaxes lungs and improves air flow. Last and certainly not least, vitamin C has potent antihistamine effects via inhibiton of mast cell degranulation, and also has bronchodilator effects via inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Taking several grams
a day of vitamin C (preferably buffered calcium ascorbate), along with some magnesium may completely inhibit mild asthma, and should significantly help moderate to severe asthma, with no known drug interactions (except perhaps with Theophylline, which inhibits the same phosphodiesterase enzyme that vitamin C does). These three natural supplements also play very important roles in maintaining mental health. This information is referenced in the Allergies/Asthma chapter and Chronic Mental Illnesses Part of my book "The Failures of American Medicine", available here at Amazon...

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic, Easy to Read Golden info, From A World Expert
There are a lot of books on breathing. This is probably the only one aimed at laymen that has been written by a world class respiratory psychophysiologist who has written numerous professional texts on various aspects of respiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with practical info that DOES work!
After learning the author's breathing techniques, I have been able to relax more and get to the heart of my symptoms.Easy to follow and comprehend. No outer-worldly stuff here, just factual informationregarding how breathing correctly will eliminate many of the stresses inyour life.I highly recommend this book! ... Product Description
Extensively revised and rewritten, An Atlas of Hypertension, Second Edition updates the acclaimed first edition to include the myriad of advances that have developed in this field. It illustrates the better quality, less invasive methods of imaging the renal arteries along with the advances in interventional radiology that have transformed the investigation and treatment of atherosclerotic vascular disease. It shows how the use of endovascular stents as an adjunct to percutaneous angioplasty has greatly increased the scope of the procedure, especially by allowing treatment of the lesions at the ostia of the renal arteries. The book covers non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure used in combination with sensitive methods of quantifying left ventricular hypertrophy such as echocardiography and magnetic resonance imaging to identify patients with arterial pressures that require treatment more quickly and with greater accuracy. An Atlas of Hypertension, Second Edition is the definitive clinical reference and review text for cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, and all physicians engaged in the treatment of hypertension in both primary and secondary care. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Hypertension
This book is comprehensive in scope to the treatment and management of hypertension...this is not an easy read for those who need to read this.

If you suffer from high blood pressure you need to get involved with a health care professional to understand this book...also a basic understanding of physiology.Treatment and management are foremost, but there is comprehesive understanding about the causes of this disease state.

Rationale and goals, nondrug therapy and later drug therapy all play an important role in the treatment...all the time underline the role of the primary care physician.

A good book for understanding the etiology of hypertension distilled from volumes of published literature.Pathophysiology is a plus to permit good sound clinical judgement.

This is a single authored work, but it does involve references to subsequent work of others.A good book for Physicians, Pharmacists and primary care nurses... only those afflicted with hypertension or those involved in the treatment and management need to read this...

Informative and insightful are the words that best fit this book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A poorly edited book makes for a difficult read.
While the information in this book may be valuable, the poor arrangement of information and almost non-existent editing make it a difficult read. This undermines the potential validity of the information the author is trying to get across.I am left wondering if I can trust the message, given the poor quality of its packaging.

Sentences are missing words, orsay the opposite of what they apparently are meant to say.The impressiongiven is that the author is not a native English speaker but the bio in theback suggests that he is.Important information about nutrition as itrelates to hypertension and to Dr. Braverman's program is scatteredsomewhat randomly throughout the book and it is up to the reader to pull itall together so that it makes a cohesive whole. The reader who is preparedto ignore the poor writing may get something of value out of the book if heis willing to work at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best book on hypertension for the layperson
Braverman has done a real service to the millions of Americans being hurt by blood pressure drugs. He correctly points out that, while they do lower blood pressure, the side effects end up INCREASING mortality. Braverman gives good practical alternatives including nutrition, vitamins, and life style changes. He tries to be fair to the heart drugs and points out that the calcium channel blockers are the safest drugs and probably OK. Well, since he published in 1996, studies have shown that some of these drugs double your risk of cancer and increase the rate of heart attacks.Mark Kroll, PhD, FACC ... Read more

Product Description
The DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) has been proven in several National Institutes of Health (NIH) research studies to lower blood pressure and cholesterol without medication. It is the diet recommended by the NIH for lowering blood pressure. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends this eating plan for everyone. And the DASH diet forms the basis for the new MyPyramid. The DASH diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, low fat or nonfat dairy, and includes lean meats, fish and poultry, grains, nuts and beans. However, many people find it challenging to put the DASH diet into practice. This book is designed to make it easy; it was written by a dietitian who is experienced in helping people make sustainable changes in how they eat. This book shows you how to follow the DASH diet in your real life. How to eat on-the-run, how to add more vegetables even if you hate vegetables, how to make over your kitchen to support the DASH diet, how to lose weight with the DASH diet. It has 28 days of meal plans (with adjustments for 1200, 1600, and 2000 calorie plans), and DASH-friendly recipes. It shows you how to make other lifestyle changes to lower blood pressure, such as losing weight and adding exercise. What differentiates this book from other books on the DASH diet? This book provides practical, real life solutions. It goes beyond "what" is involved with the DASH diet; it also shows you "how." The book helps you make your own personal plan, with the specific steps you will take to fit the DASH diet into your daily routine. I had a heart attack 08-09-2008.This diet was suggested in the paperwork I was sent home with from the hospital.I am 49 and had a stent put in and had Left ventricular failure.I am doing great now.I started the DASH diet immediately.(I have two younger children and have no intention of a second Heart attack)I am never hungry, love all the food and love how it helped me plan and took so much of the thinking out of it for me....something I really wasn't up to coming home from the hospital.I eat plenty...I am a teacher and I usually have more food than my peers at lunch, but I have been loosing weight.I was 212 when I went to the emergency room on 8-9-08, and as of today at the cardiologist's office I weighed 185.Along with Lipitor, my LDL is down to 50.(that is what many people are born with.) People who do not deal withheart disease may not understand the greatness of this book, butI highly recommend this book.

Product Description
The condition known most widely as pseudotumor cerebri syndrome is of diagnostic interest and clinical importance not just to neurosurgeons, but also to neurologists, ophthalmologists and headache specialists. Variously called idiopathic intracranial hypertension, benign intracranial hypertension, and other names over the century or so since it was first recognised, the authors argue for the grouping of all these conditions under the name of pseudotumor cerebri syndrome on the basis of a common underlying mechanism - an impairment of CSF absorption due to abnormalities at the CSF/venous interface. The book reviews the development of ideas around some of the more contentious issues and deals in depth with aetiology, investigative findings and strategies, treatment and outcome, and in the concluding chapter, considers the possibility of establishing an experimental model to facilitate analysis of the unresolved issues, and pointing the way to a more complete understanding of this controversial condition. ... Product Description
This indispensable guide critically evaluates for hypertension specialists both established and new techniques for diagnosing and treating secondary hypertension in adults and children. Drawing on a variety of medical disciplines-including nephrology, endocrinology, internal medicine, and pediatrics-its world-renowned authors review the critical scenarios that should prompt a search for secondary forms of hypertension, and detail appropriate testing for these uncommon disorders. Additional coverage is given to exogenous or such less-appreciated causes of secondary hypertension as obstructive sleep apnea, primary aldosteronism, renovascular hypertension, and the effects of noncardiac drugs. ... Product Description
This new account of the pathogenesis of essential hypertension (EH) represents a detailed analysis of the main components of the circulatory control system. The latter's properties resemble those of man-made adaptive control systems in which regulatory parameters are altered when operating conditions exceed certain limits, often through neural mechanisms.

Inheritance of EH depends on both genes and environment. The high blood pressure (BP) genes have not yet been definitively identified, whilst the main environmental causes are mental stress, high dietary salt intake and obesity. EH occurs as two major syndromes, each initiated by chronic stress: 1) Stress-and-salt related EH, and2) Hypertensive obesity.Stress is perceived by the cortex, from whichincreased dopaminergic (DA) neuron activity stimulates the hypothalamic defense area, raising sympathetic neural activity (SNA) and BP.Normally these subside quickly when the stress is over, but in those susceptible to EH the DA synapses become sensitized so that the defense response is evoked by ever lower levels of stress. Sensitization is common in memory circuits, but not in autonomic neurons, so that this property in EH may be genetically determined.

Stress-related hypertension increases hypothalamic responsiveness to high salt, resulting in further rises in SNA and BP. Later, non-neural functional changes (e.g. reduction in nitric oxide)and the structural remodeling of resistance vessels further enhance the vasoconstriction. In contrast, in those developing hypertensive obesity food consumption is excessive, which transiently alleviates stress-related anxiety. The brain ignores the leptin-mediated signals that normally curb appetite, contrasting with normal energy regulation in SSR-EH. In hypertensive obesity, the SNA pattern is similar to that in SSR-EH, but vasoconstriction is masked by vasodilatation and fluid retention due to hyperinsulinemia. This syndrome is a volume overload hypertension, where high cardiac output, renal impairment and other non-neural factors contribute to the elevation of BP.

Other topics include the role of various transmitters in autonomic regulation; the place of baroreflexes in the intact organism; why exercise training lowers resting BP; obstructive sleep apnea; non-pharmacological and drug treatment of EH;the role of the kidney in EH and in different types of renal hypertension and the pathogenesis of the Japanese spontaneously hypertensive rat, which provides a valuable animal model for EH.

The work suggests that physiological systems analysis in a complex disorder like EH is a valuable tool for using the great advances in molecular biology to best advantage. ... Read more
