4-0 out of 5 stars Results in All Areas
I stumbled across this gem in my maddening search to sleep more deeply and drown out my noisy neighbors. I have been using these CDs for 2 weeks and I can already see the results. I am sleeping more deeply and can't wait to see how much more I will progress. I'm not at that point of "perfection" or completely getting all of its benefits but that's only because this is just the end of 2 weeks. I am slowly working my way up to a full 8 hrs. Ms. Decker's suggestions are great for getting a racing mind to relax and focus on positive affirmations. I've suffered from anxiety and insomnia for years but now after only 2 weeks, I am "relaxing & feeling comfort" not only at night but during the day as well. I even find myself repeating her affirmations during stressful situations-and it really works! I finally feel like someone has given me the keys to turn the switch of my racing, anxious mind to "off" and get some much needed deep sleep. I have noisy neighbors and it is helping me to remain in my own world of nirvana despite what is going on around me. Priceless! Oh and the best part of all is that she was even kind enough to help me with further questions I had on how to improve my specific problems. I can't say thank you enough!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not as advertised.
This product does not help you go to sleep. It's a generic relaxation exercise that specifically tells you not to go to sleep while listening and wakes you up.Wasted Money.

3-0 out of 5 stars A note of caution . . .
I was looking for a hypnosis CD to help ease my sleepless nights, and I chose this one based solely on its high ratings on Amazon. In general, I feel like I'm pretty susceptible to hypnosis. If someone talks to me in soothing tones about floating blue orbs that emanate magical auras of sedation, I'm out like a light.

That said, I couldn't take more than five minutes of this woman without feeling agitated and unpleasantly alert. Why? I couldn't even focus on what she was actually saying because her voice was so abrasive. I mean, it's not a terrible voice for someone delivering a business presentation, but it's not the kind of voice that has any business hypnotizing a person to sleep.

I can't pinpoint the exact quality of her speech that makes it so unpleasant to me. It's not very gentle, for one thing. For another, she doesn't have that metrical lilt that most professional hypnotists use, the kind that lets you fall effortlessly under the spell of its rhythm. And third, while I'm not usually bothered by this, I suspect my distaste for her voice may have something to do with how distracting I found her slight regional accent.

So I'll caveat my criticism with a personal disclosure, which is that I grew up in the South, and my ears are particularly attuned to the vaguest hint of a Northern accent. It could be entirely possible (and probably is, based on the many high reviews) that most others aren't as sensitive to that accent and wouldn't find this woman's voice as distracting as I did.

But if, like me, you prefer a more neutral and calming voice to bid you adieu as you depart for dreamland, you might want to keep searching for a different hypnotist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worked For Me!
I used this CD and had what a friend calls a "good hypnotic experience". There is a short disclaimer, which I skipped after hearing it twice, then Ms. Decker starts talking in a soft and rhythmic voice.Once she starts talking I just sort of "zone out" and next thing you know I am turning off the CD and the session is over. There is no music on this CD which I like because on most CD's of this nature I find the music bothers me. I use this CD during the day as Ms Decker suggests as opposed to using it at bed time but I suppose this is a personal choice and may work better for some people if used at bedtime. I do recommend that you read the book that comes with the CD.It tells you how to use the CD to get the most from it and how to use it in conjunction with her other CD's.This was important for me because I own and use 2 more of Ms. Decker's CD's, Stress Reduction and Self-Confidence.The book also gives you a really good crash course in hypnosis. The stress CD I will probably use forever, or at least until this global financial crises is over, and I've used the Self-Confidence with great results. For me, these CD's are worth the small investment I have in them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Effective
An amazing hypnosis Cd that is definately worth a try when all else fails. Or maybe you don't want to take drugs and become addicted or suffer any side effects.

I hight recommend getting this CD if you want to achieve Deep Delta Sleep. You can hypnotise yourself, but to not experience it with another person, the binaural beats, you aren't getting the full effectiveness.

All in all, this was a great find, and I will recommend!

Product Description

The statistics show that as much as twenty percent of the population suffers from chronic insomnia—and one-fourth of those with the condition eventually develop an anxiety disorder. As comorbid conditions, they contribute to any number of physical and social problems. Yet too often insomnia is undiagnosed, or treated as merely a symptom of the patient’s anxiety.

Insomnia and Anxiety is the first clinician guidebook that considers the evaluation and management of insomnia and related sleep disturbances that occur conjointly with the common anxiety disorders. By exploring the ways that one condition may exacerbate the other, its authors present robust evidence of the limitations of viewing insomnia as secondary to GAD, agoraphobia, PTSD, and others in the anxiety spectrum. The book reviews cognitive and emotional factors common to anxiety and sleep disorders, and models a cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy in which improved sleep is a foundation for improved symptom management. Beginning and veteran practitioners alike will find vital insights into all areas of these challenging cases, including:

  • Diagnostic and assessment guidelines.
  • Cognitive-behavior therapy for insomnia.
  • Behavioral strategies for managing insomnia in the context of anxiety.
  • Cognitive strategies for managing comorbid anxiety and insomnia.
  • Sleep-related cognitive processes.
  • Pharmacological treatment considerations.

Insomnia and Anxiety is highly useful to clinical psychologists given the range of treatment strategies it describes and to researchers because of its emphasis on the theoretical and empirical bases for its interventions. In addition, its accessible style makes it an excellent training tool for students of therapy and psychopathology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Did not help with my sleep
This really did not help at all. I found it of no use to me and a waste of my money

5-0 out of 5 stars Lot of useful information!
I sometimes have trouble sleeping . . . not so much getting to sleep, but
staying asleep . . . so when I saw RESTFUL SLEEP by Deepak Chopra,
I jumped at the opportunity to listen to the program.

Subtitled THE COMPLETE MIND/BODY PROGRAM FOR OVERCOMING
INSOMNIA, it delivered a great deal of information . . . but this was not
surprising because Chopra tends to do that with every book and/or tape
he comes out with . . . in my opinion, this was one of his best.

I particularly liked how he backed up his ideas with insights from
Ayurevda, the ancient Indian science of life.

There were many tidbits I gained from listening; among them:
* You can't force yourself to sleep.

* Trying to sleep will not help; it will actually aggravate the
insomnia.

* Turn your clock to the wall. Don't be concerned with the time.

* The solution to all sleep problems is making the period of being
awake totally dynamic and satisfying.

* Lunch should be your heaviest meal of the day.

* Supper should be light and eaten early.

* Take a short stroll after dinner.

* Avoid watching TV at night. If you must, stop by 9 p.m.

* Best to go asleep before 10 p.m., according to the rhythms of
nature.

* Rising earlier will lead to an earlier time for going to bed.

* Wake up at a regular time every day.

* Do reading in a room other than the bedroom.

* Making your bed each day creates an orderly and harmonious
impression when you go to sleep.

* Extract of lavender is considered helpful for sleep.

* Ask yourself: Do you love your job? Are you really happy?
If "yes" to both those questions, then it is likely to will avoid
most heart and other health problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful resource
I bought this book several years ago when I first became aware that I was having chronic problems with sleeping. I finally pulled it off my shelf about a month ago and read it. I have found it to be extremelyhelpful.

Chopra begins by encouraging the reader to consider theconnection between waking life and sleeping life, and also the connectionbetween our own biorythms and the rythms of nature.

He then writes aboutsleep and how to make it restful again rather than stressful. His style isvery relaxed and easy to understand. He takes an ayurvedic (the ancienttradition of Indian medicine) approach to helping solve sleep disorders. Iwas not familiar with the ayurveda prior to reading this book, and reallyenjoyed learning a little bit about it. As a reader I did not feel thatChopra was trying to convert me, just help me. And - I feel that he did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I slept all night last night!
Last night was my 4th night listening to the sleeping CD and I slept all night! I've been on sleeping pills for about 8 years now, and I've tried quiting on my own many times with out success. One thing the book suggested was waiting till I felt sleepy to go to bed. It was 1:45 am and I still didn't feel sleepy. I was wide awake and alert as ever. So I skipped that part and just went to bed armed with some of the book's suggestions and the CD. The first few nights I went to sleep but woke up after about 4 hours of sleep. Last night I slept the entire night. That has not happened in years. I honestly think the CD alone is probably enough, although I believe reading the book helped me to have hope that I could fall asleep naturally again. I'm actually feeling sleepy now. I find my self yawning before bed. Amazing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well it worked for me
I'd just like to add my personal testimony that, like most people who left comments here, the book was helpful enough but the CD was VERY helpful in putting me to sleep and helping the quality of my sleep.I have wicked bad insomnia (which is made worse by being bi-polar and having ADHD) and have tried pretty much every sleep pill you can name (Ambien, Lunesta, Rozerem, Lorazapam, Melatonin, Codiene makes me jittery as does Benedryl, etc) so I've had sleep problems my whole life.I'm also very educated on the subject of sleep because it's always been such a major problem in my life. So, as such, the book didn't tell me much that I didn't already know.I did find one or two of the exercises to be of use.

But as many people have already stated, the CD/Audio track is what really paid off.I've tried a few things of that nature before but haven't had much success until this one.My only complaint would be that the voice on the audio track tends to get a fair bit quieter towards the end (as you drift off to sleep) and if you've got your CD player set up to repeat when the track loops back to the beginning it suddenly goes from fairly quiet to a lot louder as it warns you not to listen to this while you're driving. This was really startling me awake for a while so I ripped the track onto my computer and used a MP3 editor to cut off the first two minutes of it so now when it hits the end of the audio track it loops back towards a much more mellow beginning.I'm not sure I explained that real well.... but if you listen to the CD I'm sure you'll know what I mean so I thought I'd mention it in case it helps someone else.

Bottom line, if you've got insomnia, this book and it's CD worked where dozens of things had failed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I can sleep!
I have tried many different things to overcome a lifelong problem of insomnia. I was doubtful if this would work, but I was desperate! I'v never needed to read the book. My husband and I listen to the CD every night and WOW does it work! My husband was positive it would not work on him, as he assured me that hypnosis would not work on him...he was out before I was!

Even on the few nights that I wake up again in the night, I just concentrate on my breathing and start counting backwards from 300 that is taught in the CD and I go right back to sleep. We have been using it over a month now and this is the most sleep I have gotten since I was a child.

Cannot recommend this CD/book enough. I'm now trying his "I Can Make You Thin" book/cd and hope I get the same results.

5-0 out of 5 stars 10 years of of unrestful sleep
In 1986 I started to work a grave yard shift. I went to work at 10pm and returned home at 6am exhausted. Many times I would fall asleep in my car outside my house in the parking lot. This went on for 14 years. The insomnia started the day after I quit that job.6 months later I develop hyperthyroidism which lasted for one year. With drugs I was able to get my thyroid under control and no longer needed drugs.
I was diagnosed with adrenal fatigue in 2005.The adrenal fatigue treatment made me feel better but the insomnia persisted.
From 2000 to 2010 I've tried everything from going to a sleep clinic to a fortune teller.
I've only been using Paul McKenna CD for 2 weeks. It has been the only treatment that has helped me consistly get at least 4 hours of sleep. When I wake up I replay the CD and work on one of the techniques. Sometimes it helps me to returned to sleep and sometimes not.
I've had this challenge for 10 years I do not expect it to be gone over night.I highly recommend this CD for anyone who wants to find a drug free way of solving there sleep challenges.

2-0 out of 5 stars Creepy CD!
I bought this book yesterday, and haven't done hypnosis before, but I have to say that the man who recorded the CD session (it's not Paul McKenna, but some guy with an English accent) gave me the creeps like nothing else! And I had nightmares last night! It was especially creepy when the recording is two tracks of him saying things overlapping each other, so I can't even tell what's being said, which concerns me. Lord knows what my mind is being programmed with. Plus I noticed that as soon as the 20 minute CD was finished, my ears felt like they were kind of humming (I was listening to this on my stereo speakers, not through headphones). I was also acutely aware of small noises I've never noticed before when going to sleep - the clock ticking in the bathroom was very clear, and I could hear my cat breathing. It was weird. I did fall asleep soon after but as I said, to a night full of nightmares.

I'm surprised to see no other reviews in which anyone else found the CD disconcerting in any way. I won't be listening to it again.

I'll give the book a read but I'm not sure how well I trust this guy now. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The devil's own snack food.
Charles Simic, Hotel Insomnia (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1992)

If I ever meet Charles Simic, I am likely to ask that one question every author really hates: "Where do you get your ideas?"

It's not that the overarching, grand design of Simic's work is incomprehensible or anything. In fact, in Hotel Insomnia, if anything, it's more noticeable than ever; for once, the book's title really does tie into almost everything in the book. Insomnia is a major theme in these poems, and it runs throughout like a bad infomercial on late-night TV in the background, bleary-eyed, beer in hand, in its boxer shorts, and yet strangely appealing.

No, it's not that. It's in the details, those damnable little snippets of poetry that make Charles Simic's poems little gems of wide-eyed brilliance:

"There's a painting over the cash register:
Of a stiff Quaker couple dressed in black.
They hold a cat under each arm.
One is a tiger, the other is Siamese.
The eyes are closed because it's very late,
And because cats see better with their eyes closed."
(--"Caged Fortuneteller")

This is a guy who knows something about you. No matter who you are. And in every book he releases, he will reveal a little of it, until you're paranoid, hiding in a darkened room, peeking out of the blinds, unable to sleep, just waiting for Charles Simic to come knocking on your door, because you're convinced he's coming for you.

And isn't that what it's all about? **** ½

5-0 out of 5 stars He is a wonderful Poet
I first read poetry of Charles Simic in the New Yorker. He is a great poet and evokes moods with very well-turned phrases and perfectly chosen words. I loved this book and admire this poet to an extent that cannot be put into words. ... Read more

Product Description

This cultural, historical, and scientific exploration of sleeplessness by Eluned Summers-Bremner begins with the literature of ancient times, and finds its sufferers in prominent texts such as the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Mesopotamian epic Gilgamesh, and the Bible. Moving to Romantic and Gothic literature, she shows how sleeplessness continued to play a large role as the advent of street lighting in the nineteenth century inspired the fantastical blurring of daytime reality and night visions and authors connected insomnia to the ephemeral worlds of nightmares and the sublime. Meanwhile, throughout the ages insomnia has been variously categorized by the medical community as a manifestation of a deeper psychological or physical malady. Today’s medical solutions tend to involve prescription drugs—but, as Insomnia reveals, important questions linger about the role of the pharmaceutical industry and the effectiveness of such treatments.

“Summers-Bremner’s account of literary usages of insomnia, from Gilgamesh to Garcia Márquez, is a rich one, sufficient to make the case that insomnia is a recurrent theme in Western culture.”––Wall Street Journal

“A whimsical tour of the history of how different cultures have viewed not only insomnia but also the night itself, sleep, dreams, darkness, and activities that occur in the dark.”—New England Journal of Medicine

“Summers-Bremner’s excellent account of insomnia shows that the consideration of our waking moments is indicative of the changing ways we think about life.”—Financial Times Magazine

Product Description
Dorothea Tanning, who was born in 1910 in Galesburg, a town on the Illinois prairie, is one of America’s major surrealist artists. She first came to fame in the 1940s when she showed in the gallery of Julien Levy, New York’s preeminent dealer of surrealism. However, in the 1950s she felt a growing need to move beyond the prevailing idiom of surrealist representation. She describes what happened: “Around 1955 my canvases literally splintered . . . I broke the mirror, you might say.”The resulting paintings are vibrant with faceted colors and shifting spaces. The Insomnias — the group takes its name from a painting of the same title that Tanning made in 1957 — are forays into the realm of conjured energies; they represent a vigorous expansion of form and content at a crucial historical moment that continues to reverberate today.Charles Stuckey describes these “seemingly multidimensional mindspaces” as “among the most ambitious and sophisticated paintings to address the dilemmas of imagination and culture in a new atomic, space-race age.” ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Light in the night
If misery loves company, millions of Americans will love this Memoir of Insomnia by Patricia Morrisroe. According to her statistics, a total of 70 million of us can't sleep at night about 40 million with chronic wakefulness issues and 30 million with occasional sleep deprivation.

Patricia Morrisroe's story ought to resonate with many middle-age women of the baby boomer crowd. Amidst history of the growth of the sleep disorder business is her story of growing up in a family with other members with insomnia. Though she traces her issues back to childhood and a genetic propensity to lose sleep, she acknowledges that as a population, we tend to have disrupted circadian rhythms as we age. As one of the 40 million with a diagnosed sleep disorder, I looked forward to the researched facts purported to be in this book. I was pleasantly surprised by a candid personal history embellished with humor and insight.

This book is well-crafted, right down to its perky sunshine yellow cover, displaying the hands of the clock stopped at ten minutes to 3:00 AM. How well do I know that time of night! In fact, through the years, this author had used her early morning wakefulness to develop her writing career. Her writing style is compelling as she intertwines research on sleep disorders, sleeping aids and pharmaceuticals with her experiences with yoga, meditation and even alternative herbal remedies for treatment. I was kept wide-awake, reading through her tale of trying everything imaginable to seduce Sleep, the character she personifies with evil intentions and power to torture her to keep her from her rest.

One might expect a story that details years of lost sleep and the debilitating effects of sleeplessness could be a downer, but this one isn't. Through the progression of her life, we grow to see as the author does, how to still the over-active mind that can't be silenced in the still of the night. Her lessons serve to guide us away from pills and props to actively silencing our thoughts through meditation. When she moves to the country and practices living in the moment and close to nature, she aligns her cycles with nature's. By appreciating those ties, came to find peace and the elusive slumber she seeks.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book
I was really disappointed in this book. It goes on for pages about staying at the Ice Hotel, testing out high end mattresses, what kind of vacation house suits her and her husband, shopping for lizard shoes, but it doesn't give me the kind of information I need to know. As an insomniac trying to find some way of living with this problem, I was looking for the kind of nuts and bolts information I found in Gayle Greene's book Insomniac, which I found incredibly helpful. Like her chpater on the pros and cons of the drugs on the market, so you know what you're getting when you take a sleeping pill, like the information about alternative treatments, how science views insomnia. This is what I wanted to know, not the author's taste in shoes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wide Awake
Wide Awake: A Memoir of Insomnia by Patricia Morrisroe. I bought this for my grandaughter. She said it is really were good and helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meditation beats Medication
This book is so witty and entertaining that it makes excellent bedtime reading. I strongly recommend it to any victim of severe and persistent insomnia, and it will be helpful to many professionals.
Years ago I read Ian Oswald's "Sleeping and Waking" which is long out of print I think. It came out soon after the original Azerinsky and Dement work (I remember hearing Jouvet speak about his new work, which dates me). I had been recommending Neil Kavey's "Fifty Ways to Sleep Better" as a self-help book.
Morrisroe's book is, as the cover says, a memoir rather than a self-help book, and is chatty and digressive. It's very digressive indeed. In an early chapter she mentions getting a sleep medication, then the town in Florida it was mailed to her from, then talks about a sinkhole in that town, then about the local sinkhole monster. The digressions help in a way. She talks about topics the texts and self-help books leave out, especially the unhelpfulness of many suggestions.
She explores the tensions between doctors and patients and drug salesmen. Patients seek a medication that will give rapid onset of a sound night's sleep, followed by being alert and bright-eyed and bushy-tailed the next morning. The last hours of Michael Jackson show what happens when doctors try too hard to supply that mythical medication. She got the most satisfaction from hypnosis and meditation. (Those don't actually put you to sleep as defined by the EEG record.)

4-0 out of 5 stars Counting Sheep
Insomnia, a very serious subject for anyone afflicted by it, is given star treatment by veteran writer Patricia Morrisroe as she describes her quest for enough good-quality sleep. The reader is brought up to date with a bit of family history, including her mom's sleep problems, the terrors of Catholic school, and the remarkable fact that her grandfather, though he suffered from tinnitus, escaped insomnia. Morrisroe delivers her tale in an enjoyable, chatty tone that she no doubt cultivated when writing for //Vanity Fair// and //Vogue//. In this, her book is reminiscent of Lee Eisenberg's //Shoptimism.//

Morrisroe illustrates her experiences related to sleep, or the lack thereof, with descriptions of the professional services of a psychologist, a psychiatrist and psychopharmacologist - who knew there was such a profession? She even went so far as to gladly embrace the notion of jet lag with the hope it would bring relief at the journey's end.

Because sleep deprivation has taken on the image of an American affliction, drug manufacturers have geared up production of sleep potions with names like Lunesta and Rozerem. This book includes a survey of this category of drugs, how they are perceived and how they worked, or did not, for the author.

The most authoritative and comprehensive guide to realizing the amazing health benefits of 5-HTP

Written by one of America's leading naturopathic doctors, 5-HTP explains how this natural amino acid can safely and effectively regulate low serotonin levels, which have been linked to depression, obesity, insomnia, migraines, and anxiety.

5-HTP is also a powerful antioxidant that can protect the body from free-radical damage, reducing the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer. 5-HTP has already helped thousands, and Dr. Murray, citing extensive scientific studies and case histories, shows how this groundbreaking supplement can help you.Amazon.com Review
5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown incomprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for thetreatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used fortreating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrualsyndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John's wort for thetreatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, asit's been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, whilethe herb may take a month or longer.

Author Michael Murray, N.D.,a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of NaturalMedicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys ofdepression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations ofpresynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There arealso several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of"Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors." But thebook's comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murrayincludes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotoninsynthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online andphysical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. --Erica Jorgensen ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Potentially harmful advice
I am all for natural ways to relieve depression and other ailments. I have been a a number of different prescription antidepressants and hated the side effects. However, I found Dr. Murray's book rather troublesome. As someone else pointed out, he tends to get too clinical for the average layperson to understand, and the book does contain a number of inconsistencies. More troubling is that he recommends doses that are far too high! I spoke to a naturopathic physician and have seen articles stating that the daily intake of 5 HTP should not exceed 50 milligrams. Dr. Murray recommends far more than that. He also neglects to point out that people ideally should only take this with a doctor's supervision. This stuff is just as powerful as prescription antidepressants, and should not be taken lightly. Furthermore, Dr. Murray is very rigid in his philosophies. He insists that people must completely eliminate caffeine, alcohol, foods with sugar, etc. I realize consuming caffeinated beverages, booze and sugar to excess is a bad idea. But they're not harmful in moderation. To the contrary, numerous studies have concluded that consuming a glass of red wine per day actually has many health benefits. The same goes for green tea, which contains caffeine. Furthermore, the average person would be hard-pressed to completely eliminate these from their diets. Dr. Murray also insists that people must take literally dozens of supplements to facilitate the maximum effectiveness for 5 HTP. I can't imagine how the majority of people could swallow that many pills a day. Plus, the expense would be prohibitive. I do believe that this author has his heart in the right place. But I feel this book misses the mark in a lot of ways. And people should not take this without consulting with a trained medical professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to the Use of an Excellent Product
This book provided scientific, statistical and anecdotal support for my decision to use this product. It guides you through the body and the brain and explains how and why it works, and why it is better than other alternatives. The author provides suggested supplements for use with 5 HTP and appropriate dosages for each of its many uses.It was very readable and not dogmatic.
For those, like me, who suspect that long term use of prescription antidepressants may be inadvisable, and for those who are looking for less expensive and safer ways to manage their moods, their weight, their pain, and their sleep patterns, this book is an excellent guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Cure for Migraine Headaches
I have had this book on my shelf for a while occasionally scanning it for information about headaches. For some reason I picked it up the other day and my life has been changed. I use to take a ton of meds for migraines and not to mention the cost of my rescue meds. I checked with my neurologist before taking the 5 HTP.He thought it was good to try it. I have been headache free for over 2 weeks now. I feel great and have energy and wake up feeling rested. My suggestion is if you have headaches, of course check with your doctor, but give this a try. No side effects except feeling much better and off toxic meds. I have tried EVERYTHING. This is the only thing that gives me hope. I found his book very informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5-HTP is the real deal
I can't comment on the book as I have not read it.But since you are on this page and considering the book, assume you are interested in 5-HTP.I just want to encourage you to explore this remedy...I've tried many prescription and non-prescription formulations, and this one has far and away worked the best.Others worked as well for a time, but then dropped off.Of course, must include the caveat that my make-up is undoubtedly different than yours, so your results may vary - but...check it out! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Why Shakespeare Couldn't Sleep and You Can
From the title, I judged this to be a spoof, and possibly one of the sources of the movie SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. I was mistaken. It is a thoroughly-researched monograph about Shakespeare's numerous references to insomnia in his work, and what those references suggest about him. If you're not especially interested in Shakespeare as a man, you probably won't enjoy this book, but I did. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cured my insomnia
Not a slam and not a joke. I wasn't sleeping so I thought, "What better book to read?" It kept me awake for four more nights and I've been sleeping well ever since. I'm a serious SK reader, picky about what of his is good or not, big Dark Tower fan, think The Stand is probably his best and It was the worst, yadda yadda, but this one is a page-turner. I cared about the characters and the politics, and King nails "Derry, Maine" down cold. I live about 150 miles from there and he knows that town, including the fact that there's *got* to be something living under a rock (or a tree) somewhere, because "Derry" is one strange burg, always has been.

What I like best about SK is that he writes as if he's talking with you, telling you a story instead of writing you a book. Sidebars and sidetracks and wanderings--we all do that when we tell stories, and I for one am glad his editors give him free rein. He's on my very short list of people I'd like to have a beer with (I know you quit, Steve; it's hypothetical), along with Mark Twain and Gilda Radner and John Steinbeck.

Don't quit writing, SK. You really are all that and a bag of chips. ... Read more

Product Description
Edgy, brazen, and funny at first glance, on a closer look Bob Hicok's poems reveal themselves to be soulful, reflective, and provocative. Thoughtful meditations build into moments of epiphany as Hicok displays a fluid ability to shift moods, a rich visual palette, and an idiosyncratic use of language. The poems in Insomnia Diary are populated by the denizens of the world of getting-by, who waver between loneliness and connection as they confront the realities of humanity from the battlefield to the bathroom mirror. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Journey Through the Dark Side of Life
In Bob Hicok's fourth book, Insomnia Diary, Hicok takes the reader on a risque journey through the darker side of life as seen by the eyes of the narrator. While some of Hicok's poems speak simply of love and life's basic needs, other poems have a distinctively sexual undertone that some people might shy away from. All of this is foreshadowed through the choice of the painting used as the cover art: Luis Cruz Azaceta's "Time-Man" in which the central figure is nude and has his head severed from the rest of his body. The dark range of browns, blues, reds, and black in the painting add to a reader's overall impression that the poetry hidden between the covers will have a dark edge.A dark edge that Hicok does not fail to deliver.

In Insomnia Diary Hicok gives a reader tales of love toward another ("My life with a gardener"), sexual fantasies ("Another awkward stage of convalescence"), social criticisms ("Growing at the speed of fashion"), and even tales of being forced to lay off others in the work force ("Dropping the euphemism").All these snapshots of life are wrapped neatly and hidden behind the "Time-Man" who practically begs the reader to open the book and see what tales the covers hold. Dark threads and themes run throughout Hicok's work, but beauty exists as well in Hicok's written words. Insomnia Diary is well worth a reader's time.Hicok's poems make a reader think, and those are the poems that will last.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
This is easily one of the best books of poetry I've read in ages. There's lots of great writing out there, but every once in a while a book comes along that really knocks you out.Denis Johnson's "The Veil," Michael Burkard's "Secret Boat," Beckian Fritz Goldberg's "Never Be The Horse"...this book fits in that field for me...Just amazing--it makes you want to read more, and write more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Winner
Another wonderful book by an amazing poet. Hicok's imagination is evident throughout. These poems move around a great deal and yet never lose their focus on people, real people. I've never read a poem about how it feels to lay someone off, and in "Dropping the euphemismth", as in other poems, Hicok inserts moments of surreal intensity within a narrative framework which give his work an unusal emotional depth. This book is a worhty follow up to "Animal Soul." ...
