5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I can eat and loose weight!!!
After trying every diet book outhere, I finally came accross "The Insulin Resistance Diet" recommended by my friend. At first I was kind of skeptical, but gave it a shot anyways. I can happily comment that it actually works !!!! It teaches you to eat healthy, and how the body reacts to certain types of foods.

5-0 out of 5 stars common sense in a book!
This book is worth it weight in gold.During the first week of Link and Balance I lost 4 lbs without starving, craving or feeling deprived.I have recommended this book to over a dozen people!Stop wondering what you can do to feel better, lose weight & get your insulin resistence under control. Spend the $12 and find out in 2 chapters!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Changed My Life... Literally!
I've been following the eating plan outlined in this book for 2 months now- and I'm down 18 pounds!I lost SIX pounds in the first week, and I've lost roughly 2 pounds each week since then.I still have about 20 pounds to go until I'm at my goal weight- but I haven't been this close in YEARS.

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was 16, and started struggling with my weight around the same time.I was never obese, but I was always overweight, even though I was active.Over the years, I've tried EVERYTHING.For 4 months earlier this year, I did a vegan diet, and stuck to a 1,600 calorie diet.I did "Biggest Loser Weight Loss Yoga" 6 days a week, and I walked 3 days a week.In those 4 months, I GAINED ten pounds.I was working my BUTT off- but my butt was getting bigger. ;)

I did this "diet"- the Insulin Resistance diet- and I've NEVER felt better.I have energy to spare!I have the motivation to walk- and I walk 6-10 hours a week.People who I know can't believe how different I look- they tell me all the time. But the most important difference to me is the way I FEEL.If I "fall off the wagon", I get cramps and bloating- it's not worth it to eat junk anymore.I don't have cravings for junk anymore- the cravings I used to have to FIGHT.They're gone!

This book literally changed my life, and I am SOOOO grateful "Dr. Google" found it for me!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazed by how good and simple this is
I was reluctant to give it a try since i tried so many times to lose weight on normal diets and they didn't work, of course now I know why ! Low carb also is a no-no for me, since I am hypoglycemic thanks to insulin resistance :-) Anyway, I lost a bit of weight, but then I discovered that all the yogurt I was eating to balance the carbs was making my body mad, with pimples and all ! That's how I discovered I am lactose intolerant. I replaced the milk based protein with pure egg protein, i bought it on ebay but I am sure it can be found in normal countries, not like mine :-p That's my advice to lactose intolerant people who want to be on this diet. The egg white protein is tasteless, when drank alone it tastes like water with a bit of salt, with food it's neutral and tasteless. Give it a try !

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information for women with PCOS
The premise behind the theory is also used by other successful weight-loss programs: eat protein with any carb. While I find the amounts of protein recommended versus amount of carbohydrate in each meal a bit hard to stick to at each meal, I have found that it is easier to lose weight when I make sure to eat more protein at each meal (instead of having oatmeal and a piece of fruit for breakfast, I'll eat oatmeal with turkey bacon, and an apple if I'm still hungry). Even if you can't follow the eating plan religiously, this book provides a good guide to balancing your food intake when dealing with insulin resistance. ... Read more

Big Belly? High Body Mass Index? High Blood Pressure?

If this sounds like you, you may be one of the millions of North Americans with Metabolic Syndrome. Predicted by medical experts as the likely number one risk factor for heart disease-Metabolic Syndrome, or MSX, describes a constellation of conditions, including those mentioned above, of which the body' resistance to insulin is a primary feature. A byproduct of obesity, 25 percent of the adult U.S. population is now estimated to have MSX.

The Metabolic Syndrome Program offers readers a sensible lifestyle-based approach to treating MSX. One of the first books to name and address this condition, The Metabolic Syndrome Program outlines a realistic plan of treatment-without magic pills or quick-fixes to a growing and little-known threat to public health.

The Metabolic Syndrome Program includes:

  • Facts about MSX, the risk factors associated with it and its impact on your overall health
  • The role of nutrition in combating MSX
  • The truth about fats, carbs and proteins and the balance needed to maintain optimal health
  • All the latest research on insulin resistance, Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and Cardiovascular disease-the worst outcomes of metabolic syndrome
  • Detailed information on natural supplements that can be used to combat the risk factors of MSX
  • Recipes and meal plans that will help you make the immediate lifestyle changes required if you are one of the millions at risk for MSX

"Karlene Karst has done an excellent job outlining the seriousness of obesity and insulin resistance, and their ensuing complications, while providing a nutrition and lifestyle action plan to help you get back to the basics of good health."
--Sam Graci, author of the Path to Phenomenal Health and The Food Connection

3-0 out of 5 stars Disorganized and not entirely truthful
The first couple of chapters were great. I thought I may have found a great source of information at that point. But, things started to fall apart quickly. It was as if the author had collected a bunch of essays written over the years and jammed them together. This meant a lot of information was repeated, but presented as if for the first time. By the book's end, I was terribly frustrated every time I had to read yet another paragraph reiterating what insulin resistance was, and what risks it presented.

Worse than the repetition, I detected the occasional contradiction from section to section. On more than one occasion I found myself wondering, "just what does this author believe about xxx".

I pressed on from the first few chapters, trying to ignore the repetition and inconsistencies, looking for more good info, but didn't find much. The section on supplements is misleading. The author picks out a few studies to show how the supplements she discusses supposedly do great things. The problem is the author doesn't note that there are other, contradictory studies, and that in truth, the jury is still out on most on them (fish oil, excepted).

This kind of book really bugs the crap out of me. My impression is that it does more to earn the author a few bucks than it does to help those of us who really need it. It could have been a great book, had the entire book been as well written as the first few chapters, and had it been clear about the questionable supplement research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Probably the only book you need'll on the disorder
I had a scare which led me to some 20 odd books on cholesterol, eventually leading to my becoming a complete vegan.I quickly dropped 20 pounds on an already skinny frame, got my numbers down to commendable levels--LDH, HDL, even BP--but not my triglycerides, and I was feeling no healthier as a vegan than as a carnivore.Next stop: Syndrome X.

It seems that if we don't have enough diseases, American commerce and capitalism must invent them, or give new names to old diseasees.Several decades ago everybody seemed convinced they had either hyper- or hypoglycemia. And I've noticed that those faddish health scares bear some remarkable resemblances to the latest one, Syndrome X aka Metabolic Syndrome aka Insulin Resistance disorder.

I don't have excess weight or, at this moment, high blood pressure, so why my sudden interest in Syndrome X (starting with its "founder," Dr. Reaven?).Well, let's face it, we as Americans have an obsessive interest about diagnosing diseases, whether our own or someone else's.Night after night I'm in a room with a TV set tuned to the gimpy guy who, as an antiheroic type because of a vicodin addiction, is as reliable as Perry Mason in diagnosing the afflicted accurately. Then there's that proactive woman autopsy/ forensics expert, who keeps us in suspense as she reconstructs the circumstances that led the deceased to be in his unfortunate condition--and never once do I recall either of the two throwing up their hands and saying, "Frankly, I have no idea what is (or what was) wrong with you (or him, in the case of the deceased). All the same, this nightly drama, reaching tidy closure in each instance, is enough to encourage any American with the least affliction to seek the same felicitous result for him or herself.

This is my 7th or 8th book on the "latest" widespread disorder (the author calls it the biggest cause of heart failure after smoking--and I don't smoke, which puts me uncomfortably close to the front of the line).I think the proponents of Metabolic Syndrome (we'll settle for that name to be consistent with this book's title) are most likely on to something.Even if your numbers are in line, who wants to be dependent on Plavix, Crestor, Cardia and all of the other cholesterol and heart meds for the rest of their life?Especially if the side-effects are severe enough to make you feel worse than you did as someone at high risk for heart disease? Also, if you've ever noticed a pronounced slump upon eating virtually anything sweet--enough to make you feel like an extra in a George Romero movie--wouldn't you like to find out what's causing it and what you can do to avoid it (aside from fasting)? The all-clear ratings from the standard work-ups for diabetes may provide some momentary reassurance, but that's all forgotten when you feel like h-- the next day.

Even if you haven't read any of the preceding books about the syndrome, not to worry. This one is among the most current and readable. In fact, it's the only one you need.Just one warning: it's easier to become a vegan than to follow--religiously and meticulously--the therapeutic regimen for Metabolic Syndrome. But if you don't make yourself numero uno in your life, I wouldn't count on your GP or, for that matter, Pfizer or Merck to do it for you. Moreover, only by healing yourself can you be of much good to anyone else.

5-0 out of 5 stars eyeopening
After many year of not feeling good I finally found a Dr who understood and had answers. He told me to buy this book and it really explained what he had told me at my exam. This book goes into detail and helps to understand what is going on in your body and puts you in the frontseat for your health care. I learned things that my Family Dr. had never told me and is still scratching her head over some of the things he has recommended or tried. If you aren't getting the answers you need read this book and try seeing a Dr specializing in Physical Medicine. It's one of those that "your Dr isn't telling you or doesn't know" kind of books. The Metabolism Miracle: 3 Easy Steps to Regain Control of Your Weight... 5-0 out of 5 stars Refer to this book over and over
I have read this book cover to cover twice and refer back to it often. The author is well informed on her subject. I saw her speak in person last September and decided to re read the book. I have lost 13 pounds to date and most of it from my abdomen. I look and feel better than I have in years. Really it's about cutting out the junk and getting back to the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're looking for up-to-date, excellent information, READ THIS BOOK!
What a wealth of information! This is a book you'll read and keep, because you'll want to refer to it again and again. It's worth more than every penny you spend on it! ... Read more

Product Description
You can feel great again!

"Syndrome X proactively lays out a nutritious, tasty, and simple diet plan to get us back to the basics of healthy nutrition."–Lendon H. Smith, M.D., New York Times bestselling author of Feed Your Body Right

"Syndrome X is the best new book to help you understand the facts about nutrition, health, and aging. . . . It is full of new information and insights most readers have never had access to before. Everyone who values his or her health will want to read the book and then individualize the program to suit his or her needs–the authors have made this easier than ever to do."–Richard A. Kunin, M.D., author of Mega-Nutrition

What is Syndrome X? It’s a resistance to insulin–the hormone needed to burn food for energy–combined with high cholesterol or triglycerides, high blood pressure, or too much body fat. Syndrome X ages you prematurely and significantly increases your risk of heart disease, hypertension, obesity, eye disease, nervous system disorders, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and other age-related diseases.

Syndrome X is the first book to tell you how to fight the epidemic disorder that is derailing the health of nearly a third of North Americans. It outlines a complete three-step program–including easy-to-follow diets, light physical activity, and readily available vitamins and nutritional supplements–that will safeguard you against developing Syndrome X or reverse it if you already have it.Amazon.com Review
If you're aging prematurely, getting fatter, feeling sluggish, and watching your blood pressure and cholesterol sneak upwards, youmay have "Syndrome X," claim the authors, who say that up to 60million North Americans have it. "Syndrome X is primarily anutritional disease caused by eating the wrong foods," they write. Themysterious-sounding "Syndrome X" refers to a group of health problemsincluding insulin resistance ("the inability to properly deal withdietary carbohydrates such as sugars"), plus at least one additionalproblem, such as abnormal blood fats (elevated cholesterol ortriglycerides), overweight, and/or high blood pressure. Insulinresistance is "a diet-caused hormonal logjam that interferes with yourbody's ability to efficiently burn the food you eat." According to theauthors, you probably have this problem, and if you do, eatingprocessed carbohydrates are the root of it. Pastries, pastas, breakfast cereals, soft drinks--these refined carbos are theenemy. The book warns you that you probably suffer from insulinresistance (please get a blood test instead of relying on theadmittedly unscientific questionnaire in the book, which makeseveryone suspect who eats cereal or drinks fruit juice). Then theauthors jump on the high-protein, low carb bandwagon. You can eatthree eggs for breakfast, roast duck for lunch, and salmon for dinner, and snack on chicken slices.

It seems odd that if the problem is refined carbs that the solution ishigh protein and low carbs. The authors admit that most unrefined, orcomplex, carbohydrates do not have the excessive glucose- andinsulin-stimulating effect of refined carbs, so why not recommendhigh-quality, unrefined carbohydrates (which are preferred overhigh-protein diets by the American Dietetic Association)? Consumerscan't tell the difference, the authors say. So rather than educatethem to the difference, let them eat meat. Go figure. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for those with genetic factors for metabolic syndrome
Read this book if you eat a lot of refined food and drink sugary drinks and need to be convinced to change these habits.

If you can't tell from the big "X" on the front, this is an alarmist book, the subcontext of which is "blame the patient".Despite the fact the authors give a couple of nods to potential genetic factors in some cases of "Syndrome X",this book is not meant for people who have a genetic predisposition to metabolic syndrome and who already have an awareness of what proper eating is.The book makes no mention of the connection of insulin resistance to polycystic ovarian syndrome, probably because at the time the book was published, this discovery was just being made.Setting aside that other parts may be outdate as well, the book may contain some useful information, but it's difficult to sort it out of the shear verbosity of the preachy language.

One sentence in particular offended me as an anthropologist. When discussing the "Paleolithic Diet", the authors state "people had little choice but to develop agriculture because of a shortage of large game animals".For better or worse, the authors are *medical* doctors, not professors of anthropology. They either made this statement up or pulled it from a convenient, but most likely untested, hypothesis that they don't bother to cite.If you want a cohesive, and thoroughly researched, account of how agriculture began, read "Guns, Germs, and Steel" by Jared Diamond. For an understanding of the population pressure that would cause people to rely fully on agriculture, try "The Time Before History: Five million years of human impact" by Colin Tudge.

Two other things to note: 1) This book is meat-centric (if you can't tell from the quote in the previous paragraph), i.e. it is *not* a vegetarian-freely in any way. (Has anyone proved that eating meat at every meal helps you to live longer?Other evidence I've read suggest the opposite.)2)The authors berate the use of medicines, and while pharmaceuticals do indeed deserve some of it, they go on to recommenda certain pet supplement because it is "natural".Remember that just because something is natural, does *not* mean that it can't cause side effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I wish at least one of my many doctors had told me about this book.My last internist knew very little about Syndrome X and didn't seem to consider it of interest. This book will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book I have ever read on nutrition! Ever!
I had been struggling with understanding what sugar does to someone who is intolerant to sugar, and this book instantly got rid of all the mystery.I know what foods make me feel good, and which ones just dont sit right afterwards, and the common factor was always sugar or foods with a high glycemic index. As a healthy athlete, I wanted to learn the best fuel to put in my body, and I stick to this diet, with predictable results. What I really enjoyed about this book was the proactive approach to help me increase my energy, and to understand the supplements to take.I am now very mindful of high glycemic foods, and plainly just avoid them, to keep my mind, body and spirit operating at the optimum rate. Thanks for educating me! Andrea Samadi, author of The Secret for Teens Revealed: How Parents, Teachers, and Teenagers Can Inspire Leadership and Transform Lives

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Ideas for Getting Healthy!
Syndrome X is High Cholesterol, Obesity, High Triglycerides, High Blood Pressure and the centerpiece:Insulin Resistance. The book provides the reasons for many people's poor heath and practical solutions to improve it greatly. It is also applicable to those who are already healthy and want to stay that way.

The authors clearly explain that Glucose is our biological gasoline and insulin is escorts the glucose from the blood into cells where it is burned as energy. As with the carburetor of a car, when this isn't working right, we are not going to be at our best!

Knowing what to eat is crucial in good health today. With our fast paced, fast food society this is no easy task.Syndrome X addresses the wide array of good foods, vitamins and nutrients to return to good health. It explains in layman's terms but never talks down to the reader about the benefits of eating right and the terrible effects of eating poorly.

Powerful topics include: The importance of diet, Glucose, the body's fuel and the secrets of living to age 100. Other subjects include, individualizing your Anti-X program, what to buy at supermarkets and more.

Vitamins C, D, E and more are explained in excellent detail.Minerals such as chromium, Zinc, Magnesium, are also addressed as well as nutrients such as antioxidants, good and bad fats and more.

The easy to understand explanations of how the body processes food and supplements is some of the best I have read.Overall Jack Challem, Dr Burton Berkson, and Melissa Diane Smith have done an exceptional job at providing a common sense guide to healthy living through good diet, vitamins and supplements!

Stop Prediabetes Now: The Ultimate Plan to Lose Weight and Prevent Diabetes

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Jack Challem's new book on prediabetes
Syndrome X was a breakthrough book when it first came out in 2000. Of course Syndrome X is a form of prediabetes, which increases the risk of full-blown diabetes and heart disease. Jack Challem (the lead author of Syndrome X) has outdone himself with his latest book along these lines: Stop Prediabetes Now, which came out in October. The description of the problem, his dietary recommendations, and his supplement recommendations are all much clearer and easier to follow. The recipes are superb -- I love the curry chicken salad, in particular. Jack addresses the bigger picture of prediabetes, of which Syndrome X is only one part. ... Read more

A cardiologist's revolutionary weight-loss plan that allows dieters to enjoy good carbs while still losing weight

The glycemic index has been the basis of many popular diets. But it doesn't take into account the serving sizes people actually eat and eliminates too many foods for dieters to stick with it. Now Dr. Robert Thompson's breakthrough program uses the glycemic load--the glycemic index adjusted for serving size--to take the GI a step forward. The glycemic load is a more accurate and effective tool in controlling weight and insulin resistance, allowing dieters to eat more foods while still burning fat, cutting cravings, and speeding up their metabolism. Safe, simple, and scientifically proven, it's the smartest weight-loss plan yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book worth reading
Dr. Thompson's book, The Glycemic Load Diet, simply works for me. If you don't read anything else read this..."The combination of removing the starch from your diet and activating your slow-twitch muscle fibers is the simplest way to lose weight."
Cutting out breads, potatoes, and other white starches and exercising will result in weight loss.THIS IS NOT A LOW CARB diet. This is not Dr. Eades' Protein Power Diet. Milk, nuts, and fruit can be part of the plan as well as a few peanut M&M's.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a winner!
This Book is a Winner!

I didn't know losing weight could be so easy. I read Dr. Thompson's book, did what he said, and twenty pounds just melted away - no dieting, no painful exercise, no rebound weight gain. I had tried other diets before, and they never seemed to work. They were unsatisfying and whatever weight I lost came right back. Since I learned about the glycemic load and slow twitch muscle exercise, I have been eating tastier, more satisfying food ever, and my weight just keeps creeping down. I feel great. I just bought copy to give to a friend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Glycemic Loads listed in the book are all wrong
I have diabetes and became quite interested in the glycemic load.I have developed a program that calculates the glycemic load from the glycemic index and the amount of carbohydrates in the item.I have a program that I installed on the iPad and have verified EVERY number found using my program.EVERY number for the glycemic load in this book has failed to verify. The information listed in the book appears to be correct, but do not believe any of the glycemic loads listed.I always tell people "Don't take my word for it, do the calculation yourself."At first, I thought my program had a problem in it when it kept giving answers WAY lower than those in the book. When I finally checked against other web sites and the data in the database on the iPad, EVERY number from my program was verified indicating ALL the numbers in the book for glycemic load are WRONG.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Simple and Effective Program
This is an easy to follow diet plan you can stay on for life--you won't be hungry and you will lose weight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure am glad to have discovered this book.
My dermatologist suggested this book with great praise. I purchased the book a week after that visit and discovered a whole new meaning to my true weight gain over the years. From the second week of April till June 15th, I have lost 33 pounds with hardly any effort. I am now eating more healthy than I ever have. I wish I could shake the authors hand. ... Read more

Abstract: Insulin resistance is an important clinical issue in patients with other prominent components of metabolic syndrome, such as central adiposity and diabetes. However, its presence may be less evident in patients who are neither obese nor diabetic. Is measurement of insulin resistance important in clinical practice? How might its presence change management in individual patients? In this concise review, Dr Sivitz discusses the underlying mechanisms involved in insulin resistance, the issues surrounding assessment, and the implications for management in patients in whom insulin resistance is either detected or suspected. Product Description

The prevalence of disorders related to insulin resistance has continued to increase throughout the developed and developing world. The world’s population has continued to become more obese and sedentary. Of great concern in the last decade is the extension of these deleterious lifestyle patterns to the pediatric population, leading to both obesity and the appearance of insulin resistance-related disorders in youth as well as adults. Insulin Resistance: Childhood Precursors and Adult Disease presents topics related to insulin resistance and its consequences across the lifespan. In the first section of the book examining epidemiology, the contributors review controversies over the definition of metabolic syndrome in adults and children, current knowledge regarding the epidemiology of insulin resistance in the pediatric population and the contributions of the prenatal and early childhood environment to the development of insulin resistance. The Second part of the book explores pathophysiology, with reviews of the techniques used to study insulin resistance, as well as current knowledge of the molecular and physiologic mechanisms of insulin resistance, including the contributions of adipose tissue and biochemical mediators. This section concludes with discussion of the relationship between insulin resistance and cardiovascular, endothelial, liver and gonadal disorders. The final section of the book explores the impact of exercise and weight loss medications on insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is likely to be the most important public health concern in many parts of the world in coming decades. This volume provides up-to-date reviews of these areas, providing the reader with a current perspective on issues in insulin resistance as they affect patients across the lifespan. The hope for Insulin Resistance: Childhood Precursors and Adult Disease is that it will spur continued interest in the topic on the part of clinicians and researchers, perhaps promoting new points of view and creative approaches to a daunting challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and easy to follow
I decided to put a paper clip on the pages that looked like a tasty recipe, half an hour later almost every page had a paper clip! The explanation of glucose/carbohydrates and what they do in your body made complete sense.Basically you get to eat whatever you want, just avoid "white" foods (potatoes,pasta,bread...).

4-0 out of 5 stars Forget The Glycemic Index, Get Delicious Low-Carb, Low-Glycemic Load Recipes From Dana Carpender
We've heard a lot about the glycemic index in recent years, but not many people know exactly what that means and why they should care. The problem with GI is it is an incomplete equation when it comes to figuring out what impact a particular food will have on the body. A better tool is to determine the glycemic load of what you eat and that's something Dr. Rob Thompson has devoted himself to with his diet plan. In this book of recipes that serves as a companion to The Glycemic-Load Diet, Dr. Thompson teams up with world-famous low-carb cookbook author Dana Carpender to whip up some yummy recipes that are designed to control insulin spikes which lead to weight gain, hunger, and disease. Product Description
Insulin resistance, defined as a reduced biological action of insulin, has emerged as a major factor in the development and progression of a number of common non-communicable diseases. This book addresses the current understanding of insulin action in humans as well as the physiological and pathological conditions with which insulin resistence is associated. Pharmacological and non-pharmalogical treatment of Type II diabetes is also addressed.

Section 1 (Pathophysiology of Insulin Resistance) considers the development of current concepts of insulin resistance. This is followed by a critical review of techniques for the assessment of insulin action in humans. The section concludes with an outline of current hypotheses concerning the molecular defects responsible for insulin resistance.

Section 2 (Insulin Resistance in Clinical Medicine) broadens the discussion to include physiological and pathological conditions with which insulin resistance is associated; the effects of drug treatment on insulin sensitivity are also considered.

Section 3 (Management of Insulin Resistance and Associated Conditions) focuses on the avoidance and treatment of insulin resistance in its clinical manifestations. A discussion of the potential benefits of non-pharmacological measures prefaces a review of the range of drugs used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and related disorders. ... Read more

Product Description
Hardbound. Insulin resistance was recognized as a feature and a pathogenic mechanism in pathological states such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. More recently, however, it has become apparent that an impairment in insulin action is shared by a variety of conditions not necessarily associated with diabetes or obesity. These conditions include essential hypertension, dyslipidemia, endothelial dysfunction, hyperuricemia and many others. Moreover, these conditions tend to cluster with insulin resistance prompting the definition of the "Syndrome of Insulin Resistance." This association has been recently recognized by the WHO as a tentative definition of diagnostic criteria was proposed. This book provides a comprehensive information on the role of insulin resistance as prognostic parameter.

This book collects the contribution of the most eminent experts in the field of genetics, epidemiology, physiopathology, complications and therapy of insulin r ... Read more

Product Description
The liver is the first organ to receive nutrients that enter the body via the intestines after a meal, and this organ plays a pivotal role in energy metabolism. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is among the most common causes of chronic liver disease in the world and is now considered to be a component of metabolic syndrome. A wide spectrum of histological changes has been observed in NAFLD, ranging from simple steatosis, which is generally non-progressive, to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), liver cirrhosis, liver failure, and sometimes even hepatocellular carcinoma. This book reviews recent evidence concerning insulin resistance and NAFLD/NASH as a step towards a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology and treatment of NAFLD/NASH. ... Read more

Product Description
Insulin resistance is a simple concept with complex ramifications. The notion that insulin action differs in different people and under different circumstances has been known for a considerable period of time. For example, it has long been recognised that young children with type 1 diabetes are 'sensitive' to small changes in insulin dosage, while obese adults with type 2 diabetes may require huge doses of insulin to establish metabolic control. What is more recent is the finding that insulin action differs in a number of different and very common conditions and may in fact be a central contributor to the pathogenesis of some or all of these, including obesity, atherogenesis, type 2 diabetes, the metabolic syndrome, hypertension, hyperandrogenism, polycystic ovarian syndrome and perhaps some types of malignancy. The increasing burden of obesity and its ramifications has firmly and increasingly focused the spotlight on insulin resistance in recent years. Yet most of this attention has been paid to adults and much less to the consequences and causes of insulin resistance in children and teens. This is despite the fact that many of the adult diseases associated with insulin resistance, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, atherosclerosis, have their origins in childhood. Furthermore, insulin resistance has long been documented in certain circumstances in children and teens with type 1 diabetes (e.g. at disease onset, with episodes of ketoacidosis or poor metabolic control), and is likely an adaptive response contributing to the growth spurt of puberty. More recently, in utero contributions to programming of insulin resistance and its consequences have been brought to light, initially by Barker and his colleagues who have championed the field of 'foetal origins of adult disease'. Given the rapid explosion in research in insulin resistance and its increasing importance throughout the life span, we felt it timely to bring together in one place a thorough analysis of the field. The objectives of this book are two-fold: first, to educate the reader about the importance and spectrum of insulin resistance in the childhood population, and, second, to help stimulate and focus further investigation in this exciting area.We have attempted to gather the contributions of leaders in the field of insulin resistance in the paediatric population. The sequence of the chapters moves from basic mechanisms, to measurement of insulin sensitivity, to description of specific disorders, to prevention and management. ... Read more

Product Description
Insulin resistance is defined as an impaired biological response to either exogenous or endogenous insulin. It is an increasingly prevalent disorder in the developed countries and is known as a high risk factor for both cardiovascular diseases and malignancies. This book describes the endocrine disorders that are associated with changes in insulin sensitivity, often resulting in clinical consequences such as impaired glucose tolerance or secondary diabetes mellitus. The main components of a pathological condition known as metabolic syndrome (MS) or syndrome X is also described, including insulin resistance, type II diabetes, hypertension, central obesity, dyslipidemia, and nephropathy. The treatment of type II diabetes is examined, including the adjustments to changes in insulin resistance and secretion and to variations in basal and prandial glucose along the diabetes continuum. The prevalence of insulin resistance among children and adolescents is also looked at, including insulin resistance in childhood cancer survivors. In addition, the association between insulin resistance and oral cancer risk (i.e. smoking) is addressed, as well as the roles of insulin resistance and sympathetic nerve activity in obesity, hypertension, Turner syndrome and liver disease. The association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and insulin resistance, and the pathogenetic and therapeutic implications are also addressed. ... Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases are common disorders that afflict the majority of individuals who live in westernized societies. Moreover, all these common medical disorders occur with increasing incidence as the population ages. Previous meetings on this subject have provided remarkable advances in diabetes research and patient care. This volume, based on the most recent meeting, provides a reflection of prospective research which will contribute to promoting not only the proper management of diabetes mellitus and prevention of its complications, but also effective control of the frequently occurring cardiovascular risk factors in diabetic patients. ...
