Product Description
This study was designed to measure insulinsecretory and sensitivity status of non-obesehyperlipidaemic and normolipidaemic Malay subjectsand to find out their relationship with differentblood lipids and to determine the effectiveness ofTLC and lipid lowering drug Simvastatin on insulinsensitivity of these subjects. In the first step ofresearch a cross sectional study was done on 246subjects aged between 30-60 years. Insulinsensitivity and secretorystatus were computed using the homeostasis modelassessment (HOMA) software to obtain HOMA%S, HOMA%Band HOMA-IR. In the second step intervention by TLCand Simvastatin was done in hyperlipidaemicsubjects. The hyperlipidaemic subjects showed substantiallylower insulin sensitivity and higher insulinresistance in comparison to normolipidaemicsubjects. HOMA%B was high inhyperlipidaemicsubjects. Which indicated that thepancreatic B cells of these subjects have tosecrete more insulin to overcome the relativeinsulin resistance. The intervention showed significantreduction of insulin resistance and improvement ofinsulin sensitivity in hyperlipidaemic subjectswith reduction of lipid levels. ... From the author: Insulin resistance, a metabolic dysfunction in glucose metabolism, is associated with numerous physical health findings that have serious health consequences such as obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes. The clustering of these diseases is termed insulin resistance syndrome, previously described as a metabolic condition exclusive to adults. Studies now indicate many of the components associated with insulin resistance syndrome are present in children and adolescents. Identifying children at risk for the development of insulin resistance is important for early prevention and intervention. Detecting early evidence of insulin resistance in children and adolescents can have a preventive effect on the disease components associated with insulin resistance. Primary care providers are in pivotal position for early recognition and treatment of insulin resistance in children.
