Product Description

Video gaming and Internet surfing are the top sources of entertainment for tens of millions of North Americans today. As these technologies continue to grow and flourish, so does the number of people becoming obsessively absorbed in the imagination and fantasy that they present. More and more people are isolating themselves, turning their backs on reality, ignoring family and friends, and losing sleep and even their jobs due to excessive use of video games and the Internet—and they continue to do so despite harmful consequences to their mental, physical, and spiritual health, a telltale sign of addiction.

In this groundbreaking book, recovering video game addict Kevin Roberts uses extensive scientific and social research, complemented by his and others' personal stories, to give compulsive gamers and surfers—and their family and friends—a step-by-step guide for recovery. He outlines the ways that 'cyber junkies' exhibit the classic signs of addiction and reveals how they can successfully recover by following a  program similar to those used for other addictions. Readers learn to identify whether they have an addiction, find the right resources to get individualized help, and regain a rewarding life away from the screen by learning new thoughts and behaviors that free them from the cravings  that rule their lives. Included is a guide for parents for working with their addicted children.

Kevin Roberts is a recovering video game addict who runs support groups to help others struggling with cyber addiction get their lives back on track. He is a nationally recognized expert on video gaming addiction and a regular conference speaker. Roberts has a background in education and is the developer of a sixteen-module curriculum designed to give those with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), often a driving factor of video game and internet addiction, the skills they need to succeed. Cyber Junkie is his first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read
I found this to be an extremely insightful book. Having been a victim to video game addiction, I wish I would have had this book around when I was stuck to the screen. A great read. I can't wait to see more from Kevin Roberts.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening read
I am one of those people who has abused the cyber world out of dissatisfaction with my life. It's been a negative way for me to escape. I have been frustrated with the lack of forward momentum, and have complained about that a lot.But I never figured out how to make positive steps.Playing games and obsessing on Facebook, of course, did nothing to help my situation. Not only did Cyber Junkie help me to understand WHY I was spending so much time on the computer, but it gave me steps to CHANGE my life.Kevin Roberts is someone who has been where I am and that came across loud and clear. There's no preaching. There's no "video games are Satan."It's an honest story that contains helpful hints from Kevin's own life and the lives of people he has helped. And there are some fascinating stories. It is part novel, part self-help book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Resource!
Cyber Junkie is a journey into the world of video game addictions. Addictive behaviors like this are often seen in the people I work with (adults with ADHD) and Mr. Roberts does an unusually fine job of covering all the major points in a way that emotionally pulls the reader in. He does this by courageously sharing his own personal battles with video game addictions.

By doing so, he gently gives the reader permission to see his/her own behaviors as being problematic and shows how one can face the addictive demons and overcome them.

He quite bravely brings in his own personal foibles and childhood history that drew him into gaming in the first place, and offers a short synopsis of why certain types of people (those with ADHD, for example) fall into the trap. He rounds it off by sharing his own experience on how he found his way OUT of the black hole of addiction- and he does this without preaching, or insisting on any particular therapeutic model.

I would recommend this to anyone who is personally struggling with video game addiction and to those around him/her that care. A must have for all therapists' bookshelves!

5-0 out of 5 stars Escaping the trap
I had been working at a high-stress law firm and the worse it got, the more time I spent wasting endless hours playing solitaire on my smartphone and it was affecting not only my work performance but time with my family and social commitments as well.I just couldn't stop playing and no one around me seemed to understand how a grown woman could be having a problem like this. Up until I came across Mr. Robert's book, I had no idea how many other people are affected by cyber addiction (and especially those with ADD, which I've been diagnosed with) and that there are solutions.I haven't given up my game completely but through reading cyber junkie I've learned to train myself to just do it in free time and stop when I need to.I think this book is a must-read for the technology generation whether you personally have an issue or you know of someone who does- besides being helpful and informational, I found the writing style quite enjoyable as well. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hit the nail on the head
This book spoke much more to me than other books I TRIED to read on the subject.I, like Roberts, have held a job and carried out most of my responsibilities in life, but my obsessive trolling of internet media and distracting myself with games have in the past prevented me from taking necessary steps to move my career forward.I am not exactly sure why, but I connected to Roberts' stories and something about his revelations inspired me to take a new look at my computer behaviors.I think it's because Roberts is radically honest and has gleaned a lot of wisdom from his own journey. He talks a lot about that nagging feeling that he was wasting his life. That feeling nagged at me the more I read!I feel like he is someone who knows how my brain works, and knows what makes me tick.If the guy made an impact on me, a 27 year old previously unrepentant computer junkie, I think he's onto something.I am not a big reader at all, but this book was a pleasure. ... "I don't even help [my children] with their homework in the evening because I'm in the chat rooms, and I don't help put them to bed because I don't realize how late it is. I also don't help them get ready for school in the morning like I used to do because I'm checking my e-mail. And I just can't stop myself."—Raymond, an Internet addict.

Internet addiction is real. Like alcoholism, drug addiction, or compulsive gambling, it has devastating effects on the lives of addicts and their families: divorce, job loss, falling productivity at work, failure in school, and, in extreme cases, criminal behavior. The problem has already reached epidemic proportions in the United States, and the number of "netaholics" continues to grow rapidly as more households and businesses go on-line. Yet, until now, no one from the mental health community has come forward with a specific description of Internet addiction and its effects or a strategy for treatment and recovery.

In Caught in the Net, Kimberly Young shares the results of her three-year study of Internet abuse. Often using the words of the Internet addicts themselves, she presents the stories of dozens of lives that were shattered by an overwhelming compulsion to surf the Net, play MUD games, or chat with distant and invisible neighbors in the timeless limbo of cyberspace.

Why is the Internet so seductive? What are the warning signs of Internet addiction? Is recovery possible? Dr. Young answers these questions and many more. She provides a questionnaire to help Net users determine whether they are addicts, and offers concrete steps to help problem users regulate Internet usage and devise a more balanced place for it in their daily lives.

For Internet addicts as well as their parents, spouses, friends, and employers, Caught in the Net offers guidance on where and how to seek help from counselors, therapists, and other professionals who take this affliction seriously. For mental health professionals, this book provides insights into the nature and causes of Internet addiction and encourages counselors and therapists to expand their addiction recovery programs to address the specific problems of Internet addicts.

"Think that computer addiction is a joke? Think again. This groundbreaking book is the first to explore on-line addiction in a serious way and to consider the effects on individuals and their families. Caught in the Net is an important book for anyone who spends mornings and evenings connected to the Net."—Clifford Stoll, author of The Cuckoo's Egg and Silicon Snake Oil.

"An excellent account of the dangers of the burgeoning Internet industry. Dr. Young carefully outlines the traps into which people can fall and offers pragmatic self-help suggestions. Caught in the Net is valuable for both consumers and the professionals who deal with them."—Maressa Hecht Orzack, PhD, Founder and Coordinator, Computer Addiction Services, McLean Hospital Lecturer, Harvard University Medical School

"I don't mean to spend all my time this way, but I can't stop. It's the only place my opinion matters and I feel important."—bob&atsign;age38.automechanic.internet.addict

"I feel guilty about it, but when I tried to break free, I simply didn't have the strength....I'm a long-time smoker, but I've found the craving to go on the Internet first thing every morning is stronger than my urge to light a cigarette."—marylou&atsign;age40.motheroffour.internet.addict

"When you're talking about the Internet, you're talking about power. It's the most powerful information tool I have ever known. When I explore the on-line world, I feel like that robot in the movie Short Circuit. I need more input! More input!"—dave&atsign;age28.militarytelecommunicationsexpert.internet.addict

2-0 out of 5 stars Outdated Information
I should have paid more attention to the publication date before I purchased this book. The information in it concerning the internet is antique at this point.Days of CompuServe, AOL and hourly charges for time spent online are long gone. It's hard getting past the outdated information to find the book of any help. It's a good enough read but check it out of the library and save your money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Prescient
This book was written almost 10 years ago, back in the days of list servers and chat room mania.Even so, it really captures the allure and addictiveness of the electronic medium.I bought it because my 19 year old son is addicted to video games.Though it isn't (yet) an "official" psychiatric diagnosis -- probably due to lobbying by the video game industry to the psychiatric industry (maybe even payoffs) -- it is a REAL thing. If gambling can be an addiction and sex can be an addition, video gaming can definitely be an addition.I probably shouldn't have written this review because I haven't finished the book yet, but Amazon sent me this email asking me to ... so far it is very factual and resonates completely with my son's situation.I haven't gotten to any "solutions" yet ... I am hopeful.

2-0 out of 5 stars out of date
out of touch. It would be good to take a re-visited look at the issues involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Information - Do You See Yourself?
First, the drawback? This book is based on studies done ten years ago. But to be fair, the problem is real and getting worse. And we need more current research into this addiction that fractures families.

Now, let's look at the positive side of this book. The reasons around this addiction haven't changed. People who are addicted to the 'Net often don't see there's a problem until, well, there's a BIG problem. Dr. Young gives us helpful information on how to become "unplugged" and get back into real life.

If you think you have 'Net addiction, it won't hurt to read this book, would it?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my family!
Dr. Young's strategies helped me to identify and learn about my addiction to the Internet.I was spending all kinds of time in online chat rooms and instant messaging, my marriage of 15 years almost ended, and I almost lost my kids because of it.My wife bought this book and it helped me to understand what I was dealing with - an addiction - and gave me specific ways to help me recognize what triggered this problem.I've been in counseling for the past few months and slowly putting my life back together and I thank Dr. Young for her book.It saved my family! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This book is amazing, for any women who has a partner struggling with this it is also good for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful tips, but taking the entirely wrong attitude towards recovery
From someone who has recently stopped smoking through Allen Carr's Easy way to quit smoking, I have an idea of what helped me along that process (or the addiction process in general) and an understanding of things that may not have. I turned to this book because it was specific to quitting pornography.
To start with, Dr. Skinner does a great job of illuminating the "reaction sequence." This little illustration in his book, along with a description of what you feel when facing an addiction, is phenomenal and does help with self awareness. Therefore the first half of the book is down to earth, encouraging and great. And then comes the second half..
He spends most of the second half saying.. You'll fail.. You'll fail and should continue therapy.. It's dam tough, and yeah you'll fail so keep someone close. Absolutely no positivity, I was almost considering resuming my addiction because he made it seem so hopeless [in stark contrast to Allen Carr's optimism which I found inspiring]. In addition, way too much of a moral overtone and help seeking from "God." This is an addiction, I think we have all tried whining to a higher power and it hasn't gotten us far. Jokes aside if you want to have faith great, but he certainly didn't do a good job incorporating that aspect in.

In conclusion, good read, but pick it up if you want to learn more about your addiction, not if you want some inspiration to start or continue your journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for therapy
This book has basic condensed skills that is helpful for treating porn addiction.I like the exercises and the graphs that the client can complete and learn from.It is also a faster way for the theraputic process than the usual psychotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I have been in a 12 step program for sexual recovery for years and this
book put things in a new way that was very helpful.Rather than just
depending on a vague higher power there are very concrete tools and processes to use in this book. The author certainly understands pornography addiction thoroughly (unlike most therapists) and talks about it in a way that anypornography addict can relate to.A definite addition to a toolkit to deal with this horrible addiction ... Essential strategies to keep children and teens safe online

As our children and teens race down the onramp to the Information Superhighway, many parents feel left behind in the dust. News stories about online sexual predators, child pornography, cyberbullies, hate groups, gaming addiction, and other dangers that lurk in the online world make us feel increasingly concerned about what our children are doing (and with whom) in cyberspace. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Internet safety expert Nancy Willard provides you with need-to-know information about those online dangers, and she gives you the practical parenting strategies necessary to help children and teens learn to use the Internet safely and responsibly.

Parents protect younger children by keeping them in safe places, teaching them simple safety rules, and paying close attention. As children grow, we help them gain the knowledge, skills, and values to make good choices--choices that will keep them safe and show respect for the rights of others. In Cyber-Safe Kids, Cyber-Savvy Teens, Willard shows you how those same strategies can be translated from the real world to the cyberworld, and that you don't have to learn advanced computer skills to put them into effect. As you work on these strategies with your child, you will also discover that remaining engaged with what your children are doing online is much more valuable than any blocking software you could buy.

"Willard blends the perspectives of a wise parent and a serious scholar about issues related to Internet behavior and safety. . . . Pick up the book, open it to any random page, and you will find on that page or nearby a wealth of helpful advice and useful commentary on the cyberreality facing our children and on how to deal with any of the issues she's identified."
--Dick Thornburgh, J.D., former U.S. Attorney General; chair, National Academy of Sciences Committee on Youth Pornography and the Internet

"Simply put, this book is a must-read for anyone--parents, educators, law enforcement, and policymakers alike--concerned with the critical issue of children's internet safety and what to do about it."

Product Description
Overuse of the internet is often characterised as problematic, disruptive, or addictive, with stories frequently claiming that online use interferes with relationships, or that 'excessive' time in front of computer screens is unhealthy. People joke about suffering from withdrawal if they cannot check their emails and some parents worry about their children's use of computers, wondering whether it is to the detriment of other life experiences normally associated with childhood. Is it possible that people, both young and old, are addicted to computers and Internet use?"The Multiplicities of Internet Addiction" contests the claim that computers - specifically internet use - are addictive, arguing that use of the internet is now a form of everyday leisure engaged in by many people in Western society and one which is reflective of the benefits and employment of microcomputers within society. Offering an analysis of the nature of addiction alongside an evaluation of the current day usage of computers, this volume explains how new learning spaces have developed which are also sites of leisure. These sites challenge traditional notions of childhood as the environment in which people are positioned is increasingly digitised. With a discussion of this everyday practice constituting both leisure and learning in this digital age, "The Multiplicities of Internet Addiction" informs our understanding of the discourses surrounding internet addiction and our grasp of the emerging relationships between leisure and our learning, as well as the increasing blur between our private and public spheres. Presenting a detailed empirical study of home computer use, this book will be of interest not only to sociologists of culture and popular culture, but also to scholars of media, ICT and education. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
I did not find this book earth shattering or, in fact, even very helpful. Some of the spiritual meditations are good, however, very little information was helpful or applicable. The information is rehashed, nothing new, virtually no help at all.Waste of time!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Compassionate
Author Kimberly Young is a clinical psychologist and internationally known expert in Internet addiction. Her co-author, Patrice Klausing, O.S.F., is a licensed professional counselor. Breaking Free of the Web is their effort to help motivate Internet addicts and their loved ones to seek help. Their approach encompasses factual information, stories from their clinical experience, and spiritual guidance. Highlighted Prayer Connections are especially helpful. These might contain a review of church teaching, questions for reflection, or a relevant Scripture passage, to help readers "discern the voice of the Spirit who brings forth creation from chaos."

The book is organized in two main parts. The first provides information on general and specific additions with a clear explanation of physical (e.g. substance abuse) and process (e.g., gambling) addictions. Part 1 is designed to break through the denial common among addicts and their loved ones. Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction and early steps in dealing with the attending emotional turmoil are covered. Part 2 explores Internet abuse and addiction in relation to couples, parents and children, college students, and those in the world of work.

The content is rich in subheadings and practical guidelines such as stages of the addiction process, steps parents can take when they suspect a child is becoming addicted to the Internet, and risk factors among college students. The conclusion focuses on the healing process with recommendations for seeking professional help and celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. This last is especially encouraging as the authors address the question of timing. Referring to a man in the active phase of Internet addiction, Klausing suggests that even though one is not ready to stop, "a celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation can be meaningful--it may even be the agent of change." She then lays out a plan for preparing and making that confession, which includes choosing and locating a confessor.

This extremely informative and compassionate work is suitable for general audiences and those who minister to and council others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL CHRISTIANS
This book not only gave me insights into the addictions that I see happening around me but also real ideas of how I can be of help and encouragement to those who are being sucked into these life destroying habits. If you don't need this book now, you or someone you love will soon need it.Since I started reading it, my eyes have been open to many friends that are struggling.

3-0 out of 5 stars Internet Addiction: More Common Than You Think
Is the Internet disrupting your family life? Are you worried about a loved one's preoccupation with the Internet? Your fears may not be unfounded. According to Real Solutions For Overcoming Internet Addictions by Stephen Watters as many as 10% of all Internet users may be addicted to either cybersex, online gambling, online games, or other problem areas.
Psychologists noticed that as soon as having Internet access became as common as having a microwave in the kitchen, online support groups started receiving requests from people seeking help for out of control Internet habits.
It may be that more people than we realize are struggling with Internet usage problems particularly in the areas of distraction/obsession with new technology (surfing, chat rooms), money (online trading, auctions, and shopping), games (gambling and multi-user dimension games), and sex/relationships.
Watters, an Internet Research Analyst for the department of Legislative and Cultural Affairs at Focus on the Family, admits that Internet addiction is not an officially recognized as a psychological disorder. However, this does not mean it does not exist; it took twenty years before gambling was listed on the DSM-IV (Diagnotic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders).
If you're wondering if this is a problem for you or a family member, Watters says ask yourself some probing questions. "Have you embraced the excitement and novelty of some area on the Internet only to find yourself on a roller coaster where the highs are followed by the lows of anxious thoughts, guilt, and a growing sense of dependency? Or are you the person on the outside looking in, watching someone you love abandon you, hobbies and activities, and everything else that used to be important, to spend countless hours staring at a computer monitor?"
Watters, says to determine whether there is a potentially damaging Internet problem assess your `Internet life'. Is it affecting your relationship with God and your family? Is it affecting your work, health, and reputation? If you have answered "yes" to any of these questions, it is likely you have a problem that is worth addressing.
Watters emphasizes that Internet obsession needs to be nipped in the bud. "Your first step is to delete any accounts, special downloads, or profiles that you have created in order to indulge your addictions-especially if you have been hiding them from your friends and family. Remove programs for games that have gotten out of control, profiles used in chat rooms, accounts created for gambling or day-trading, and other arrangements that directly fuel your addiction." He also recommends setting up a filtered Internet service.
The author goes on to suggests that people with Internet addiction get professional help-Christian counselors, support groups, and accountability partners.
Solutions For Overcoming Internet Addictions is a thoughtful self-help book that will aid you in determining whether you or a family member needs help with an Internet addiction, in addition to providing you with down-to-earth solutions to get life back on track.

There is nothing but one-side christian propaganda here. Especially on the article regarding pornography. It has the typical right wing christian response toward it. "Any porn whatosever is wrong...blah blah blah.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating & Informative.A must read!
This out of print book is in need of another printing. It is worth the 30 bucks or so that I had to pay online for a used copy. The only thing out of date might be some of the statistics.

With the advent of the internet, porn is now one of the most lucrative ventures in the history of mankind. Love it or hate it, porn is here to stay.

What's odd is the deafening silence about this taboo topic. If you have ever wondered WHY porn is so attractive to the mind/body and how it can lead to addictions and other problematic behaviors in both men and women alike, then this is a great place to start.

Without being "preachy", the author addresses how exposure to erotic images cause physical changes in the brain and body.

The Drug of the New Millennium: The Science of How Internet Pornography Radically Alters the Human Brain and Body is one of the best books I have seen so far on the topic of internet pornography and it's influence on individiuals and society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for helping people understand addition
I have read this book and consider it to provide a more complete understanding of how pornography affects our society and how it affects the human body as a "drug."Indeed, pornography is a drug addiction just like cocaine, marijuana, or alcohol since it alters the chemicals in brain.A must read for anyone who is suffering from pornography addiction or for anyone who wants to help someone with pornnography addiction. ... IS ADDICTION TOO STRONG OF A WORD TO USE, I THINK NOT. SUNSHINE44'S WORDS NOT ONLY KEPT ME INTRIGUED BY HER STORY BUT MADE ME REALIZE THAT OTHERS OUT THERE LIVED, BREATHED & BASED THERE WHOLE HAPPINESS AND EXISTENCE ON THOSE MOMENTS THROUGH THE NET THAT BROUGHT LAUGHTER, HAPPINESS, TEARS, AND SHARED INTIMACIES TO THERE REAL LIVES FOR NOT ONLY A ESCAPE BUT COMFORT .I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS STORY TO OTHERS SO THEY MAY NOT ONLY SEE HOW THE NET SEEPS INTO OUR LIVES BUT HOW IT CAN HOLD A TREMENDOUS HOLD AND ADDICTION TO SOMEONES LIFE. IT'S NOT ONLY A ADDICTION THAT AFFECTS THE NET USER BUT ALL THOSE AROUND THEM THAT FIGHT FOR THE SINGLE MOMENT THERE ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THEM AND NOT A SCREEN. THANK YOU SUNSHINE44 FOR YOUR HONEST TOUCHINGSTORY THAT I KNOW WILL NOT ONLY HELP OTHERS OUT THERE BUT THAT HELPED ME KNOW I AM NOT ALONE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!
This book is just like sitting across the table with a cup of coffee talking to an old friend.Easy to read, with just the right balance between content and narrative.I would recommend this book to anyone, because addiction comes in all different styles.Internet is just one of the new scenerios of this century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
I typically would not have picked up a book of this nature on my own, but when asked by a neighbor to read it, I started it and couldn't put it down.I found the book to be a fascinating, but deeply honest story of actual events told from the author's heart. The author deserves great respect for being willing to put her life story in black and white for everyone to read. Moreover, the book serves as a reminder to us all that anything that captivates your attention full-time can be a dangerous thing to yourself and those around you. After you read this book, you will be glad you invested a little bit of time and money for the unique literary experience if offers.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars I can relate
I was researching to internet (oddly enough) for help with a facebook/internet addiction of my own.I have written the author whose kind words have helped me tremendously.I ordered the book and as I read...I could see myself in her words. The book was not only fun to read, it was also therapy for me.
This book held my attention and was fun to read.I especially enjoyed the fact that the author gave just enough detail to make you feel like you were experiencing the addiction along with her. There was no boring filler words.Another bonus is the larger print...something eyes over 40 appreciate.
I would highly recommend people reading this book for fun or (as in my case...therapy)
Thank you Sunshine 44 for helping and entertaining me. ... Read more
