OH, BRRRRROTHER!

Hi. I'm Julie Welsh. My nine-yearold brother is always cooking up schemes...and I get blamed. Because I'm older. Eleven, to be exact. But Frankie has his good points too, as I told Mrs. Kaplan, my 89-year-old pen pal, who lives in Kansas. I write Mrs. Kaplan about everything. Even my secrets. She was the first one I told about my juvenile arthritis. Mrs. Kaplan understands. She has arthritis too. I was feeling tired and achy all the time, and discouraged. Then Mrs. Kaplan gave me ideas about running for student council, and though I could barely lift my legs, Frankie made me want to compete in a fun run. Just when I thought my life was a permanent time-out, you'll never believe what happened.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My Brother Didn't Make Me Read this amazing book
My Brother Made Me Do It by Peg Kerhet, a realistic fiction novel, is a collection of letters to Mrs. Kaplan, an 89 year old pen-pal.Julie, a fifth grade girl that has a mischievous brother, writes all of these letters.Frankie, her younger brother, has ideas like making a dummy that looks like Julie and throwing it out the window as Julie screams. Intending it to only be a joke, it ends up getting Julie in trouble as most of his ideas do.Julie writes stories about the activities around the school and sends them to Mrs. Kaplan with extra fun and bad thing. When Julie finds out that she has JRA, a type of arthritis that stands for Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, it makes lots of things harder for Julie.I think Mrs. Kaplan really listens to Julie and understands some of the problems that Julie has now from having JRA because Mrs. Kaplan has arthritis too, and Mrs. Kaplan gives lots of great ideas to Julie for her campaign of becoming class president and more. After a couple of punishments for Julie that Frankie causes, Frankie starts memorizing the encyclopedia. While Frankie is memorizing the encyclopedia, Julie also ends up memorizing it too from Frankie saying them out loud.Even though Julie gets annoyed, it comes in helpful when her talent show act gets flushed down the toilet. Her friend that planned on performing with Julie ends up catching the flu. That's when Julie comes up with the idea of having Frankie come on stage with her and recite the encyclopedia by memory.Frankie and Julie win the whole talent show.I liked this book; it just wasn't in my reading range, so it made some parts boring.I would recommend this book to 6th and 7th graders.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ali's Review
I thought this was a really great book!! Its about this girl, her name is Julie Welsh. She's in 5th grade. Her teacher Mrs. Lumbard assigned everyone in her class a pen-pal. Julie got this lady named Mrs. Kaplan. Mrs. Kaplan lives in a nursing home called Shady Villa Care Center. Mrs. Kaplan always talks about all these people she has meant and places she has gone! Julie starts really opening up to Mrs. Kaplan! See, Julie has been having really bad pains. Her parents finally take her to the doctors and then doctors found that Julie has Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis!
Julie still wants to do something really big before she leaves her school to go to junior high. She decides to run for student council. She is known as Bubble Girl. Because she really wants to clean up Adams schools playground because its always so messy. She WINS!! Then Julie decides she wants to run this race that her friend is in charge of. She is not sure she wants to do it because her joints have been hurting. Well, Julie doesn't let down her friend!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK YOU WILL EVER READ!
In this story a girl is penpaling with a lady that is 89 years old. She tells the lady everything that she gets blamed for her brothers pranks, that she has artritus, and all of the things that are changing her life. This is an OUTSTANDING book for anyone. I just started today and I am already finished. THATS HOW GOOD IT WAS! I hope everyone who picks up this book will NOT put it back down

5-0 out of 5 stars My Brother Didn't Make Me Do It
There is not much stuff related to the title and I actually think Julie's brother is nice.

I am although happy when I read the ending and I do give it five stars. If we could give one to ten stars, it would be ten.

Julie is concentrating on other things, not her brother. And one including JRA. It's a disease that makes her bones hurt and now she has to take pills.

I will want everyone to read it, especially people who have JRA.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Brother Made Me Do It
This was a touching, funny book. The story is told through letters.
The book was about a girl named Julie who has JRA.She corresponds with her new pen pal, Mrs.Kaplan who helps her through hard times.Despite her JRA, Julie works hard, and in the end, she wins in a way.

This story shows what any kid with JRA can go through and what they can do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It got me to love reading...
I read this book when I was in 6th grade and I am 22 now and still skim through it. This book really got me back on the reading track and I started enjoying reading again. Cherie is a terrific author, and if it weren't for this book and her many sunset books, I don't think I'd be reading as avidly as I do today! Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars You won't want to put it down.
Sixteen year old Amber has everything: a rich and handsome boyfriend, popularity, a role as head cheerleader, a dance group close to stardom, poverty, a thirty-two year old mother, and a crippling medical secret thatcould cost her everything she thinks is important in her life. Amber'scockiness and manipulations to rise to number one also play a role in hersocial downfall. This novel by Cherie Bennett is an excellent story abouthow one girl's impoverished beginnings created a stong desire in her tohide her true self and become the best at everything, only to find one daythat the life as she had built as her own was nothing but a lie. Amberfinds that undoing this lie takes her away from her previous dreams andshows her the dreams that she really wanted. I recommend this book for itsexcellent writing and "soapopera-esque" storyline.

4-0 out of 5 stars It was pretty good.
It was a good book, but I didn't like how Amber was so self-centered. In the end, she changes for the better though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beneath all popular teens, there is always a problem.
Amber Lynn Harkin has it all; boyfriend, cheerleading, and the hot dance group, Sizzle. One day she finds out that she has a disability. She now faces many risks concerning her reputation. It just goes to show you thatbeing different is ok and just because you are popular, doesn't mean youdon't have a lot of problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is a sad story but truthful
The story was very touching. It made me cry.I felt her pain.It was well written and described the truth of a teenagers life.People can be cruel to those that are different.I hope in the next book I read withAmber, her luck changes ... Read more

Product Description
This is an autobiographical account of the influences and people who have helped Rosemary Sutcliff in her personal development as a writer. The author is a well-established historical and children's novelist who has been awarded several prizes and in 1975 was honoured with an OBE for services to children's literature. Sutcliff recounts her early years when, as a victim of Still's Disease, a rare form of juvenile arthritis, she was unable to walk. After the war and a love affair which left a lasting impression on her life, she started to write. This book ends when her first manuscript was accepted by Oxford University Press. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sad but good
If Sutcliff's books are amongst your favorites, you will be very interested in this sad little tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
Five stars aren't enough for this wonderful book. Perfectly written, deeply moving, beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful autobiography, but not long enough
This is a fascinating book on several levels. First it is the story of a young girl, an only child born in 1920, growing up with middle-class parents, but in a fashion which combined the usual practices and mores ofthe time with the unusual. As she was crippled (her word) at the age ofthree, her mother insisted on bringing her up herself rather thandelivering her to a nanny, and, due in part to her disabilities, and thelong periods of treatment made necessary, she had little formal education. However, she discovered books at an early age, initially through being readto, and was a consummate observer of both people and landscape, particularly on a small scale - the play of light on a dagger blade, thepetals of a flower. Second, it is story of the development of a writer, upto the time her first book was accepted for publication (what a pity shestopped there - I wanted her to go on!) Third, for me as the child ofService parents (father in the RAF) it is the best representation I haveever seen of the life of the Service child. Rosemary's father was a navalofficer, and she, like me, absorbed unconsciously the traditional valuesand mores of the British Armed Services while moving every two or threeyears according to her father's postings. These values, which have atimelessness about them, in particular the reciprocal loyalties of officerto man and man to officer, the duty of an officer towards his men, comethrough very clearly in all her fiction. As with all her books, thedescriptions are superb (she trained as a miniature painter. The fourthelement, I suppose, relates to the disability and her acceptance of it, inan atmosphere very different from that of today. She says that her motherin particular sought as far as possible to bring her up as a normal child, and so she never really thought of herself as crippled, even though inpractical terms she was quite badly disabled. I was lucky enough tocorrespond with her, and to meet her on one occasion before she died, and Iwas quite surprised to see how disabled she actually was - she was a personwho was incredibly alive. ...
