Product Description
The text that has set the standard for students working toward certification in special education has been substantially revised and updated to meet the needs of a new generation of teachers and students. As reflected in the new title, Learning Disabilities and Related Mild Disabilities now includes a cross-categorical emphasis, making it suitable to a broader number of courses. Specifically, the text now accommodates the increased number of courses aimed at teaching students with mild disabilities that are part of many states' certification requirements. Researchers are finding that many students with learning disabilities exhibit coexisting related disorders such as ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, and nonverbal learning disabilities. Preservice and in-service classroom teachers, who are increasingly responsible for teaching students with special needs within general education or inclusive classrooms, will find this new edition especially helpful. The text describes the characteristics of various mild disabilities and offers teaching strategies for general education teachers, special education teachers, school psychologists, and other related professionals. All of the text's new coverage and special features were developed to align with the Cengage Learning Education Mission Statement--"Bridging the gap from preservice to practice"--to help new teachers be successful in their future classrooms, and with their future students. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Learnind Disabilities and Related Mild Disabilities
I have purchased two copies of this book.
The first copy was exactly what I needed.
The second copy came from SuperMovie Deals.Unfortunately, the order was for a hard copy which they said they sent me....also charged me for; however it was a paperback...NOT TO BE USED IN THE UNITED STATES!!!!
Difficult time with return.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not satisfied
I purposefully asked for Expedited Shipping (and paid extra for it). After waiting almost a week later I still have not received my book. I should have used Standard Shipping. It probably would have taken the same amount of time. I can't respond to the condition of the item......... I'm still waiting!

5-0 out of 5 stars FYI
This is a decent book for anyone taking the LBSI test or the Special Education General Curriculum test. I just took both tests and there is a decent amount of info you will need in this book.Currently I am still in the course. As I progress in my course I am finding additional information related to the above tests.

The book is easy to read and understand. Not too super textual. I purchased my book "new" as well, and it did not come with the passkey. Luckily it was not needed.

Also, FYI, the chapter questions in this book are not the same as the older edition. I tried to be cheap by purchasing the older edition book for my course. But if your syllabus has you doing the review or reflection questions at the end of each chapter- you will need the edition specified by your instructor.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for the older NLD child
I returned the book.It was designed for the child diagnosed at a young age.We were diagnosed at 15.Found other books that were more helpful (also from Amazon) Nonverbal Learning Disabilities by Marieke Molenaar-Klumper, which is more clinical, but a very good book and Helping a Child with Nonverbal Learning Disorder or Aspergers Disorder by Kathryn Stewart, this one less clinical, and more practical.Talk about the similarities and differences between NLD and AD.

5-0 out of 5 stars greate book!
ad excellent ad the version for school!very helpful for a parent with a kid with a new diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful
I found this book extremely helpful. My 15 year old daughter was recently diagnosed with NLD so I am playing "catch up".For years we thought she had ADD and more recently, mental illness. She was fine socially until middle school and then she just couldn't "keep up" with her friends.
Everything in the book from personal care to academics is so accurate for her.She is however athletic, and, contrary to what the book says, can hit a softball.Just like the author's daughter my daughter is also musical. This is a must read for all parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference!
I wish I had this book when my child was younger. However, even now it is helpful in understanding more about what he struggles with and how I can help. It's nice to have a book where you don't have to read it cover to cover but rather can turn to a page to answer your current concern.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
This book has provided me with very needed insight into the issues my son has been experiencing and can't express. It explained alot of what we have been going through for years. What we thought was an attitude & disciplinary issue has actually been a learning disability.

My son was diagnosed in August '07 with high functioning Asperger's & NLD.He is 11 years old.I have had so much difficulty finding support & knowledge. This book was a good start! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had this as a new teacher!
This is a thick handbook, packed with useful resources. The overview of learning disabilities includes information and graphics simple enough for me to use it when explaining their disabilities to my students. The research section is comprehensive and offers ten different graphic organizers that teachers could use ready-made. The law section may become outdated in the future unless they print new editions (though, since this edition has a publication date of 2008, it should be fine for a while, plus it's brief so it doesn't make a big difference for the text). The early child ed chapter provides solid information on developmental milestones and age-appropriate activities. While the student study team (SST) chapter is helpful, each district has their own ways of handling this, so it may have limited usefulness depending on your district strategies. The chapters on assessment (for identification purposes) and planning (for eligibility and IEP processes) are clear yet general enough to apply to different states. The classroom management chapter offered good advice for all teachers, including real-life scenarios to conisder and ideas for utilizing classroom assistants/paraprofessionals. The academic management chapter was a good overview, but the book blew me away in the chapter "Interventions for Specific Problems" with plenty of student work examples, tough scenarios, and clear and simple solutions that could be used the next day. The content-specific chapters (reading, writing, math) were detailed with a plethora of practical strategies and tools to use in the classroom. The final two chapters, about working with adolescents/adults with LDs and about working with the family as a whole, provide great guidance in two areas that are often overlooked by teachers.

All in all, this is a fantastic resource. The weak spots, the law chapter and SST one, didn't detract from the usefulness of the rest, so it deserves 5 stars. Also, the book isn't text-heavy; it has lots of tables, charts, sample forms, and graphics that present the information in varied ways.

I think general education teachers need this for any struggling student, not just those with LDs, and a special educator could use it for students with a variety of exceptionalities. It may be LD-specific, but it certainly isn't limited to LD in its usefulness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Studying for GACE
I bought this to study for a teacher certification test after reading that the official GACE study guides weren't preparing other educators to do well on the SpEds test. (I took the general test for 6-12 grade). This book was great; it did exactly what I intended it to do--help me rock the GACE SpEd exam! My scores were excellent. This book has what you need to get the SpEds perspective as an educator.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for special education teachers
I've been teaching special education for 10 years. This is the book I wish I would have had my first year of teaching. I flagged almost every page while I was searching through for great ideas to use with my students. I definitely recommend this book for any new or seasoned special education teacher/regular education teacher. This book is full of excellent resources. This is a must have and you'll be happy with your purchase! =)

4-0 out of 5 stars Parent of children with learning disabilities
As a parent of children with learning disabilities I am acutely aware of the fact that not all learning disabilities are the same and they can not all be overcome without some very specific interventions. Claiming all colleges can supply the needed aid to LD students implies that there are a much greater population of trained special needs teacher in the world than there is. This book is a wonderful resourse for finding those teachers and the schools with the greatest assortment of learning aids for LD students.Perhaps it is possible for some LD students to succeed in any school if they self advocate enough and are fortunate to find the right consulor and teacher. But there are schools available which make the college process less painful and more successful for LD students so what parent wouldn't want to know about them. This book provides a wonderful resourse for families of LD students with well presented school information and how it is designed to help specific LDs

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough catalog of college services is appreciated
As an often frustrated parent of a bright, talented ADHD boy, I appreciate this source of information regarding colleges' ability to serve students with LD/ADHD. It is a great time saver - last week my husband and I visited a small college and asked one of their very experienced special ed professors if she would recommend her college for my son, and she said no - look for one that is geared for the ADHD student. We will be using the K&W Guide for our next step with our older son. My son's ability to advocate for himself is evolving - he is not organized enough (yet) to think through what he has to do in college. He still needs external structure. Finally, I have used one of the authors as an educational consultant for both my sons, and I have been absolutely amazed at how quickly she developed an accurate assessment of their essential issues. Her recommendations have been right-on and it's easy to tell how deep her experience is.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't limit yourself with outdated application advice
This book is full of blatant lies! It insists disability accomodations are only available at certain campuses--when the Americans with Disabilities Act requires them made available at ALL colleges and universities throughout America. Don't limit your opportunities and potential because the author/publisher of this guide is illiterate!

As a person with a learning disability, who HAS successfully completed her college degrees, I honestly vouch that self-advocacy IS required at any college you are accepted to and enroll at.

In addition to falsely implying that people with disabilities can only enroll at a limited number of campuses, these guides also 'forget' that students are legally required toself-advocate for their accomodations at any college campus which they are ultimately accepted to and then enroll at. No campus, unlike K-12 special education, just gives accomodations to you!

It has nothing to do with intended major or extra curricular hobbies. The self-advocacy is what ultimately allows us to receive the same accommodations which we need to successfully complete class assignments and then graduate. The advocacy also provides us with the accomodations (where also required) for on-campus living/student life...etc. College students MUST understand that their campus is legally covered by a different set of disability laws than had existed in the k-12 environment.

Now, ANY college campus only has to provide 'reasonable accommodation' to a student with disabilities. It is not under any circumstances obligated to retain every one of us wanting to earn a degree no matter how 'nice' or `hard-working' we are. We must instead prove that we can do the `regular' work at a `regular' speed' compared against people without disabilities.

Nor is it required to deal with the concerns of our parents, irrespective of how concerned they are that we be able to complete that desired degree.

If they haven't already, the last years of high school are a prime opportunity for a person with disabilities to develop our own self advocacy skills, especially in exercise at our own annual IEP meetings. We need to be the ones ourselves who are meeting with college officials. If we do not advocate for accommodations, nobody else legally can at the college environment.

College administrators simply do not have to meet with--let alone listen to parents/guardians--even while taking the tuition money!

Instead of these books, I strongly recommend "Self-Advocacy Skills for Students With Learning Disabilities: Making It Happen in College and Beyond". Henry B. Reiff explains in depth the points which I have briefly covered above, instead advocating that colleges are picked based on the institutions nationally-recognized academic credentials and your degree focus/intended degree focus so that college education will actually be worth something when you do graduate. Wanting people with disabilities ourselves knowing how to properly perform the college application and enrollment processes which will be expected, his book provides a much more realistic perspective than this so-called guide and similar con-jobs.

Their books are about as helpful as encouraging somebody to narrow down and then pick a college based on 'Is it located on a round earth?'.

5-0 out of 5 stars eye opening book
This book is a must for parents and professionals in the field of learning disabilities. So little is known about symptoms and remediation for right side brain learning issues. The fact that Ms. Martin has a daughter with this issue makes her insight more credible, insightful and impassioned. Very readable for anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice for both professionals and parents

Marilyn Martin has taken much of the mystery out of NLD in this very readable, thorough book. She includes not only the latest findings and strategies for working with children with this disability, but also her own experiences with her daughter, a person with NLD who is now a successful adult.Chapters about Sara are amusing, poignant, and beautifully written. They convey the everyday struggles of childrenwith NLD.Other chapters are very practical and clear, identifying approaches and materials that help children like Sara flourish. The book will be a boon to parents, teachers, and other professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for a better understanding of learning disabilities...
I learned a lot from this book. How frustrating must it be for a child or anyone to be thought of as lazy or having a lack of care, when in reality they are struggling to just grasp what is being taught. This book gives clear examples of why a child may seem good in math one day and bad the next... or in any other subject. If you have a child or are helping a child with learning disabilities, I would definitely recommend this book. If you suspect your child has a learning disability, this would be an excellent book to read. One thing that was particularly interesting to me is that the part of the brain that controls speech is closely connected to the part of the brain that controls the fine motor muscles. A child I am working with had speech problems AND is extremely clumsy. This clicked for me. The book is easy to read and gives intermittent short personal stories that clarify the different learning issues children face. It was very helpful to me. I give it an A+++++++++!

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Helpful
For any parent facing the possibility or reality that their child has learning problems this is the book I would recommend. I cannot think of a question it did not answer or a facit of the topic it did not cover. It helped me enormously - I am on my second read and this time I am taking notes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver
When my daughter was diagnosed with a learning disability I was lost at how to deal withthe school system. The first time we did her IEP I did not know what to expect. There weren't any parent advocates for us at the time of her IEP.This book prepared me on how to be an advocate for my child.I educated myself about her needs from the book and had alot of confidence when meeting with the school system to plan her education for the following year.Actually I went to the meeting knowing what to ask for and how to ask for it.It worked out that the items I asked for she received. Now we constantly use the book as a reference guide when we are unsure of something. This book is good right up into adulthood when your child is choosinghigher education or out in the workforce. It was a lifesaver for us and a great learning tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for the parents of LD child!
I borrowed this book from the library and then I'm here now to buy it for my own. This book goes through each type of disability, how they are identified and will guide you through the maze of school testing, IEP's,and how to be your child's advocate to make sure they are gettingeverything they should be getting from their education!Great detail onemotional growth, planning for the future and assessment measures! ... Product Description
Two reasons educators want to implement this book's Building Blocks model in their classroom: They'll have an innovative framework to help them understand the reasons why students in K-12 struggle. They'll have the proven strategies to help students learn. The Building Blocks model is practical, supported by research, and easy to implement. It identifies ten areas important to school success (the building blocks), divided into three levels: the foundational level includes attention and impulse control, emotion and behavior, self-esteem, and learning environment blocks the symbolic processing and memory level contains the visual, auditory, and motor skills blocks the conceptual level comprises using strategies and thinking with language and images A detailed questionnaire for each block helps identify a student's strengths and limitations, cultivate their strengths, address the weaker areas, and develop appropriate accommodations and instructional interventions. Each chapter contains proven teacher strategies to give educators direct information to meet students' individual needs. Once educators understand the causes of students' classroom challenges, educators can design individualized and effective interventions. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing guide
I received the book and intend to return it as it is not useful. There are many colleges that are missing. For example, I know of one college nearby that has a special program for LD students, and this college is not even mentioned! Like another person stated, the book is dry and does not give personalized information on the colleges.

For colleges with comprehensive programs, the book lists special fees and details of the program. The book states if services are available to graduate students.

Review adapted from Learning A Living; A Guide to Planning Your Career and Finding A Job for People with Learning Disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Dyslexia

2-0 out of 5 stars not helpful
I guess I ordered this book thinking it would help with a pretty normal ADD kid; instead it focuses on kids who are severely disabled, is very dry reading, and not helpful unless you have a child with a true disability.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but too many colleges are not included; none are rated
This is one of very few large directories available which deal with LD programs/services forcollege students. However, it combines 2-year and 4-year colleges so the number of colleges included is misleading.I wantedto see more about 4-year colleges.Additionally, there were no HBCUsincluded at all. Finally, I would have appreciated some kind of rating of"quality."

4-0 out of 5 stars a great guide to colleges for students with special needs

Product Description
This anthology is comprised of two major components: thirteen full-length, autobiographical essays written by persons with learning disabilities and five analytical chapters written by education and psychology scholars. Speaking in terms alternately intimate and analytical, the autobiographical essays each tell of a sustained personal encounter with the challenges and mysteries of living with a learning disability. But these autobiographies are not merely personal, concerned solely with their writers' private lives.Rather, they are also in various ways consciously analytical, offering astute critical readings of culture and society. The scholarly essays are written by such noted educators and psychologists as Lisa Delpit, Robert Kegan, and Janet Lerner. For any educator or parent of students with learning disabilities. ... Read more

This book was recommended by an instructor for a class this semester. What a book! The editors present a series of essays from individuals who have various learning disabilities and how they have approached a hostile world, and how they have handled their journey. If you want to know how a child feels this is the book to read. You will walk away with a different viewpoint of people who are differently abled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good experience
This seller delivered exactly what they promised: a great quality book that arrived quickly.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Landmark Work
Learning Disabilities and Life Stories is a landmark work. It is one of the few books that provides the 'insider's' perspective on the complex, controversial problem of learning disabilities. Thirteen college students vividly recount how LD affected their academic, social and emotional lives, and how they overcame these problems. Some of the students also suffered from ADHD, emotional problems (i.e. anxiety), and social problems (i.e. stigma). Although these students are probably not representative of the entire population of LD students, their stories make a wonderful contribution to the understanding of LD.

This is a must-read book for educators, parents, and LD students. It is especially helpful for LD students. They will likely find a particular author that they relate to. The 13 authors have a variety of life experiences, learning problems (i.e. dyslexia, auditory processing difficulties, etc.), and perspectives on LD. Each story is inspirational in its own way. As each author attended college, the book is especially suited to inspired other LD students to consider pursuing higher education.

Also read: The Pretenders by Barbara Guyer. She is a teacher who vividly describes the lives of adults with LD.

New Ways of Looking at Learning Disabilities is an excellent book for educators.

Product Description

Learning with YOUR purpose in mind -- not your parents', not your teacher's, not your school's

Every day, your school, your teachers, and even your peers draw lines to
measure and standardize intelligence. They decide what criteria make one person smart and another person stupid. They decide who will succeed and who will just get by. Perhaps you find yourself outside the norm, because you learn differently -- but, unlike your classmates, you have no system in place that consistently supports your ability and desire to learn. Simply put, you are considered lazy and stupid. You are expected to fail.

Learning Outside the Lines is written by two such "academic failures" -- that is, two academic failures who graduated from Brown University at the top of their class. Jonathan Mooney and David Cole teach you how to take control of your education and find true success -- and they offer all the reasons why you should persevere. Witty, bold, and disarmingly honest, Learning Outside the Lines takes you on a journey toward personal empowerment and profound educational change, proving once again that rules sometimes need to be broken.Amazon.com Review
Criticism for the public school system in the United States is nothing new; kids of all skill levels are slipping through the cracks at every age and in every city. Rather than attempting to change the system or point out it's failures, Jonathon Mooney and David Cole have created a practical guide to help kids jump through the necessary hoops to achieve whatever larger, postschool goals they may have. While much of the material is written for kids who've received the label LD or ADHD, many of the suggestions can be just as helpful for those who've been labeled "gifted," or any other student who feels frustrated with the daily routine of standard education.

The introduction (personal histories of the authors) is great reading for parents of LD or ADHD kids, and much of it has a humorous tone that makes it equally appropriate (and approachable) for discouraged adolescents. From the terror of weekly spelling tests to the few inspiring teachers and tutors the two encountered, the tales are equal parts entertaining, poignant, and encouraging to others who may well be experiencing quite similar events. There's little discussion of what methods are right or wrong--ultimately, both authors take a fundamentally pragmatic view, and it's "right" if it worked. A steady focus on study skills fills the majority of the book, and Mooney and Cole take what are generally pretty familiar stands on note-taking and test preparation and break them down into easily digestible concepts. With different methods for different types of learners (visual thinkers are encouraged to use maps and brightly colored markers), students will find plenty of help in creating notebooks, focusing their attention, and even appropriate ways of conducting the infamous all-nighter. Including information on how to recover lost class notebooks, how to make the most of a syllabus, and "The Seven Habits of Highly Disorganized People," Learning Outside the Lines provides students with plenty of tools to further each reader's personal idea of success. --Jill Lightner ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Book Review
Have the book in hard copy - excellent value.Rating is for the Kindle version.A book about coping with learning disabilities and the publisher has NOT enbabled Text To Speech?

Kind of ironic if it wasn't so sad.Won't buy any Kindle edition unless Speech is enabled.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unsuitable language
I would have liked to buy this book after reading some of the reviews, but the vulgar language turned me off. It's unnecessary, and makes the book totally unsuitable reading for anyone who prefers to live outside the garbage can.Sorry, folks - your readers deserve to hear your message, but your language puts up a barrier that makes it impossible.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Damn Book About ADHD EVER!!!
I don't care how many F*** the writer put down on this book. This book has life! It reminded me of who I am. A person who are Dyslexic who has ADHD who suffer like hell in school being bullied and treated unfairly. Those years in a grammar school was the worst days of my life, elementary school were no better. Just a number of handful teachers that I remembered that really cared and took me under their wings.Dad went bankrupt several times. We cannot pay for school. I continue school after waiting for three years only to stop again because dad's finance gone under, again!

Life was bloody hard . Mom beats me like a dog in order to get those stupidity out of my system but no it never worked.

Whenever there's test at school she would make me study for hours and hours until 3 am or 5 am when she saw me closing my eyes because I was so tired and sleepy she would slapmy face to wake me up. And you may ask "you've work so hard, does it worked" Hell no!I do read, my mouth wasmaking noise , but all those word that I read does not and never register in my mind NEVER.

Home was like Hell to me, School was nothing better.

How can I not rebel ? My system is screaming inside me in order to survive!!

My mom kept on calling me crazy. I went to bed with her voice hovering over my head I can hear her say "you're crazy" and at a time I thought if I did not make a proclamation to myself saying" I am not crazy and will never be " Iknow for sure that I will have a nervous break down. I can't sleep for may nights. My heart felt as if it would leap over my chest.Life was HELL Truly Hell .

When I was 16 I read a book by a pastor in order to criticise him and insult him I want to curse him and tell him how stupid he was and what a liar it is and what a waste of time worshipping the God of Dillusion. Instead I drop on both of my knees and pray the prayer of repentace. I receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

I make a pat to myself to read the bible and to read it well. I started with the new testament. Reading was easy. understanding it need time and practice. I read and digest one line per one line slowly...and repeating it again until I really get the meaning of it.

Not to promote on religeon or anything but this is the turning point of change for my mentality. All those years sounding out words without knowing what I was reading suddenly became easy. Used to get grades much lower than D and now beating straight A student became easy.

But it did not happen over night. It takes several years for me to become what I am today.

I am still hyperactive. I can multi task so many things that others has no capability in matching. I however has totally lost the "Deficit Disorder" as I am Hyper Focus.

But Life was hard as an ADHD person . Life was really hard. My son who is 10. Did not start speaking untill he was 6 and that was just a few words.
I was the one who taught him to read and write. Not the school!Definately not the school! He got bullied all the time and he is such a gentle kid and I felt so sorry for him. All those books about helping ADHD had suggest nothing but 'don't forget to take your DAMN medication' but this book inspires me.

This book reminds me of my past with the honesty that the writer himself has poured over his heart and soul into this book and I thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read this ASAP!
Wish I woulda read this in hs or college. Out of all the ADHD books that I have read, this one was the best at providing real suggestions to improve and overcome LDs. The authors both have a good sense of humor too. They make the book easy to read - perfectly targeted for their intended audience. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A book based in reality
Every book I've ever gotten about A.D.D. focus on diagnosing and medicating the symptoms.Mooney and Cole go into actually living with the pluses and minuses that A.D.D. brings to the table. They cover so many different areas of learning with suggestions on each and multiple suggestions at that. It's very helpful to someone who doesn't want A.D.D. to rule their future academic prospects.
(PS I use A.D.D. instead of A.D.H.D. because not all of us are hyper, some are hypo) ... Read more
