Easy to use resource
I have been impressed by this easy-to-use book from the Frostig Center.The six factors were identified through a longitudinal study with individuals with learning disabilities. The lessons presented in this book were first used by the psychologists at the Frostig School.

I found the activities easy to understand, and I like how some lessons teach skills outside of academic domains while other lessons are more focused on academic success.I work one-on-one with students, and some of the activities do seem better suited for the classroom.If you're like me and actually want to see the research, you can see the peer-reviewed published research on the six factors at the Frostig's Schools website.

Not just for students with learning disabilities
Great book but not just for students with learning disabilities.I could see using this book in a guidance/citizenship class to help students know themselves and society better.One will find lots of fun, creative ways for the students to discover themselves.

Well designed and well written

As a teacher of special ed children, I found this book to be particularly useful.The 6 success factors are well explained and useful in any school setting, especially those dealing with students with learning and/or emotional difficulties.The lesson plans are detailed and well thought-out and can be adapted for any age or disability group.I highly recommend this book to any teacher of students who struggle with learning and motivation.

Very Insightful
As a parent of a learning disabled child myself, I found Anne Ford's willingness to share her story incredibly helpful and insightful, and I'd like to personally thank her for it.I sent a copy to each adult member of my family with hopes of giving them greater insight into my daugther's world as well as our family's....

A Must Read for Mothers
For years I have looked for books that validate the feelings I've had as a mother of children with learning disabilities.No book does it better!I highly recommend this book as a keepsake in the home library and return to it often on those days when no one seems to understand what you're going through.

Laughing Allegra
Excellent and true story about a family dealing with their beloved daughter and a major learning disabilty.

I purchased this book many times, it is one that I keep in my car.I use it to help teachers, friends and family members understand my children and others like them.It has helped me understand why I feel the frustration when my kids "don't get it" or need extra guidance in different situations or in the public school system.It is a book that I give to their teachers in hope that they will take the time to read it. As I read this book for the first time, I highlighted many sentences, example - page 17 - quote "She was so funny and effervescent and her behavior was so far frm being considered " a problem" that my mother gave up all attempts at discipline or even expressions of disapproval".... I can remember so many times my kids - acting out -- but in a way that was just "their way" they are so full of expressions and life.

most important - page 39 - There is more then enough heartace involved in coming to terms with the fact that your child is disabled. .... this is the truth, but with this book it helped me come to terms with it and I am trying to help others.Please take the time to read this book it will help you, empower you and your child.You are the voice for your child, you are their confidant.You need to read this book....another wonderful book is Legacy of the Blue Heron, Living with Learning Disabilities by Harry Sylvester.

If you have a special needs child, this is the book to read.
I have read many books out there, and this is the best one that I have found.This book is much better than Dana Buchman's book called "A Special Education" in which she constantly refers to her daughter's mild mental retardation as a "learning difference".In this book, the author is honest and tells it like it is.... she does not sugar coat it like Buchman's book.In Buckman's book, she talked too much about herself instead of her daughter.The only negative part of Anne Ford's book is that she constantly talked about the private schools refusing to let her child attend, but if she had picked a public school, it is the law that they would have to allow her child to attend.Most regular private schools would not have the resources that her child would require.For instance, speech therapist, occupation therapist, physical therapist are not necessarily found in private schools, but public schools would have these resources because they are required by law to teach all children.Anne Ford did note this in her book.Finally, here are some quotes from Anne Ford's book that might be helpful...

"a learning disability affects a person's ability to interpret what they see and hear or their ability to link information from different parts of the brain, because their brain is 'wired' a little differently.These differences can show up as specific difficulties with spoken and written language, with coordination, self-control, or with paying attention.People can have learning disabilities in reading, writing, math, and processing information."

"Most children with LD can read words, but comprehension may be another matter entirely."

"Children with LD can and do succeed in school."

"Adults with LD can and do succeed in the workplace."

"LD can be treated successfully, and children with LD can go on to live happy, normal lives."

In conclusion, I highly recommend this book to all parents who have special needs children, and the teachers who teaches them.

Excellent source for parents of teens transitioning into adulthood and independence. Great tips for school meetings.

A must have for any educator in charge of these special needs students
Learning Disabilities do not have to be a giant neon sign blinking "I can't" over ones head - they can be overcome just like any other disability. "Guiding Teens with Learning Disabilities: Navigating the Transition from High School to Adulthood" is a comprehensive guide for guidance counselors and others responsible for assisting these individuals onto the next stages of their life. Advice on understanding the transition planning process under the IDEA of 2004, how to accept these individuals more, and how to prepare them for their life long careers. "Guiding Teens with Learning Disabilities: Navigating the Transition from High School to Adulthood" is a must have for any educator in charge of these special needs students and for community library education shelves.

A clear roadmap for supporting your ld teen
Dr. Roffman has thankfully written exactly the guide book I needed as my Down Syndrome son turned 16. As a parent, I had no training in how to think about transitioning my son to adulthood. He has been in an inclusion school environment all his life, from infant day care to high school. But the transition to the wide-open space of adulthood, when the structures of schooling were gone, was a complete mystery to me. How could I prepare? How could my son be best prepared during his final few years of secondary education?

Roffman's guide is a step-by-step roadmap for parents, of what to do, what to ask, who to ask, and when to ask. It is also useful for anyone on the service side of transitioning learning disabled teens. The book seems most specifically addressed to the parents and service providers of children with more common learning disabilities than Down Syndrome. Yet it helped me to raise my hopes and standards of what to expect for outcomes of my son'stransition as well. For example, with proper preparation, perhaps my son could attend a community college or build a more advanced skill set toward future employment than I was thinking previously.

When I attended his 10th grade IEP review meeting, I felt completely prepared, and for the first time, I knew what I wanted to have happen during the meeting, and it did! This book made the difference. I have recommended Roffman's book to everyone in our school district's SPED PAC, to those who work with my son in the high school, and to members of the school committee. I no longer feel like "the blind leading the blind." Instead, I feel confident that I will be able to support my son's transition with confidence, even if I don't know all the answers yet. Now I know how to ask the questions, of both my son and his service providers, in time for us to figure out the best answers together. If you are parenting a learning disabled teen, or providing services for ld teens, I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. You'll be glad that you did.

Well Organized, Practical, a Reference, not a story book.
This book is organized well. It explains what youneed to do in a step by step fashion.It has tables, and checklists. It pulls in essential information that you need in reference like style that is easy to go back to.

Other books on this topic, which I've obtained, review, and returned because they read like a story book because they were difficult to reference later on.This one is not a story book, by an emotional author.Its written with facts, objective recommendation and suggestions that you can apply to your own situation as you see fit or as you need.

A valuable contribution!
This is a concise, well-written, very understandable guidebook for parents and teens with LD facing a challenging time in their lives. Most delightfully, this book is very positive (while realistic) in its tone and suggestions. For a small book, it is simply packed with practical strategies (with emphatic finger-pointing bullets!) and guidance. The timetable is an easy to use resource for those with attention challenges! Dr. Roffman intersperses case vignettes to show the human side of these issues, and she shows what the individuals can and did do to deal with the challenges. Very good role models for success!All in all, an excellent book.I'll keep this copy on hand to show parents and will certainly recommend it to staff and patients. It's a must read roadmap for families who find themselves at this intersection.

First to review, but I'm not a shill -- merely an involved parent.

This is an exceptionally valuable reference for professionals, academics and invested laypersons.This is not a casual read.The book is wonderfully concise -- no fluff here.

For professionals and academics, it contains a wealth of references -- of the ~300+ pages, ~250 are text, 10 are index, and a full 55 pages are references to other texts and journal articles.The book is worth purchasing for the references alone.

Professor Gregg documents ADHD & LD research, offers her own cogent analysis & insights, and provides practical recommendations for navigating the relevant legislative and therapeutic frameworks.

The only noteworthy omission is that the book, probably by design, contains virtually no discussion of medication.One must look for that discussion elsewhere.

The net result is that this book has helped & continues to help me to intelligently, knowledgeably and helpfully engage the professionals I work with to assist my son in leveraging his strengths and manage his deficits.

Practical, research-based resource
As a reading tutor for children and teens with reading disabilities, I found this book to be a valuable resource.O'Connor's writing is straight-forward and easy to read.The chapters are laid out in a way that parallels the logical, successive teaching of skills.Most importantly, O'Connor extensively cites the research that she is using to draw her conclusions.There are several techniques that I will be adding to be teaching.I found the section on the partial alphabetic stage of reading development in older students fascinating.

Scholarly book with many practical applications for educators
Teaching Word Recognition is an extraordinary work of scholarship on reading instruction geared for children with learning disabilities. It contains a wealth of practical information and ideas for enhancing instruction based upon the current body of research as it pertains to quality pedagogical practices. While the book is researched based, it provides a very accessible view for all educators (even those who do not work exclusively with special needs children) and includes countless strategies for approaching the complex process effective teaching.

Great for Parents!

Helped me pass the SpEd GACE
I'd read that the GACE study guides were not useful to the GACE General SpED test, so I bought this instead. I did very well on the test and was able to add that field to my certificate. This book was a good study choice. I'd recommend it.

Highly recommended read for LD parents
I can't say enough about how informative this book is for parents of LD kids who are just about to turn 18. A great source of info that is hard to find. Her other book, "Laughing Allegra", is also an incredible read for those with younger kids, especially those who live in New York.

Not just another self help book.
I was worried that I would be bored by all the language specific jargon so commonly used by professionals in books like these, but the insight and personal account of dealing with learning disabled adults kept me totally engrossed for the entire book. I wish more books about dealing with disabilities were written with such a human voice.

On Their Own by Anne Ford
This is the book every parent of an adult child with LD should read, especially in those times when you feel so hopeless and that no one truly knows what you are going through.As the parent of an adult son with learning disabilities I can honestly say that On Their Own has changed the way I think about my son and his future.Most of all it has given me hope that he has a future at all!The book helped us see the whole person with all their strengths and weaknesses.Nothing is sugar-coated here, and parents of adults with LD will find many points where'll they'll nod in agreement and realize that yes, after all someone truly does understand what we are going through.I absolutely loved Anne Ford's previous book Laughing Allegra.In that book, I felt she spoke to me personally as we followed her step by step while raising a child with LD.On Their Own continues the story, but it is a much more hands-on approach and with a great deal of practical information.Even so, I found it as readable as Laughing Allegra, with many insights and anecdotes that separate it from so many other dry academic books in this field.Parents of adult children with any disability will benefit greatly from On Their Own ... Great for non-verbal learners
This book was recommended by Rick Lavoie and also The School Counselor's Guide to Special Education, so I thought it must be good. The new hardcover illustrations are OUTSTANDING and there's plenty of detail for a nonverbal learner to notice. I love this little guy who keeps trying to invent a cookie snatcher and the fact that the teaching techniques are current.

The Ticket for Self-Esteem
I figured I better buy this since the author was cited so many times in other people's books on parenting, bibliotherapy and education. Lucky me, it just came out in hardcover with new illustrations. Brain scans of dyslexics show that when kids feel bad about themselves it interferes with their thinking. This fun story packs a punch of affirmation and gets the facts across, too. Just the ticket for an LD child with bruised self-esteem.

Great Book!
This book has great insight into what it is really like to have a learning difference.I would recommend it for any teacher, parent, or child who struggles with learning differences.The Parent Resource Guide is great!I would suggest that any book written by Jeanne Gehret would be worth reading.

Shows that persistence pays off
Alex is a persistent little guy, which turns out to be an important asset since Alex also has a learning disability that makes it hard for him to learn to read. The Don't-Give-Up Kid is a vibrantly illustrated picture book that tells the story of Alex's inventiveness and dogged persistence as he tackles challenges like learning to read...and getting at the cookies that his mom put on top of the refrigerator!

When Alex's parents take him to see a psychologist, they find out that he learns in a different way from other people. "When most people read, the letters stay in one place on the page, but for you they sometimes jump around," the doctor explains to Alex. When Alex starts to work with a learning specialist, he realizes that kids have many different learning styles, and with hard work he will be able to overcome his challenge and learn to read.

Like the other books in The Coping Series, Gehret provides two pages of "discussion starters" at the back of The Don't-Give-Up Kid. Readers are encouraged to expand their thinking beyond Alex's story to apply its lessons to their own lives. By selecting a few of these questions each time the book is read, young readers may be encouraged to re-read this story with an adult, gleaning something new at each pass.

In the postscript, the author reveals that she wrote this book in order to provide hope for her family after they were told that their son may never learn to read. Like Alex, Gehret's son fortunately overcame his challenges. Parents can take the author's advice to heart when she assures, "Your belief in these kids makes all the difference. Keep the faith!"

Good information, but not the most interesting read
I appreciate all the information provided are research based, and for the most part are practical. The book nevertheless reads like a manual, and doesn't seem to offer much suggestions on how to make the teaching more fun and palatable for students with learning difficulties. More real-life examples would be good, as they will illustrate clearer how the tools can be applied. Definitely worth reading, but on the whole quite dull text.

Excellent resource for teachers
"Teaching Reading Comprehension" may be a rather stale title for a book on one of the most important (and, arguably, well-studied) components of education, but the content is highly enlightening and refreshing for those concerned with improving instructional practices with students with learning disabilities, as well as all other students.

Many highly effective, practical, and research-based ideas for teaching reading are provided in this well-organized book. A considerable amount of useful information will provide all teachers with many fresh ideas for enhancing their literacy program. My one criticism is that there are several (rather small, almost silly) errors that were missed by the publishers that appear to be the result of poor editing. Just the same, those errors do not subtract from the content and should (hopefully) be corrected in future editions.

Great Resource for Resource Teachers!
I'm usually pretty skeptical about new books for teaching. This book contains practical lessons that are easy to use in the classroom. I've already recommended it to several of the Language Arts teachers that I work with. These strategies are good for students with LD as well as all students in the classroom.

This is a quality product full of accurate information. But still too hard for an LD student to take the time to read. Yet, this is the right book for the parents!

Great for my daughter!
I got this product right away and my daughter and I started reading it as soon as we got it. She loves it. She will stop me when I am reading and tell me "Mommy, that is me." or "Mommy, I do that."

The Fisher/Cummings series of books on dealing appropriately with LD in school is one of the best out there.In this particular book, aimed at elementary schoolers, they demystify LD and help kids develop personal coping strategies for success in school and in life.Children with developmental or emotional disorders might also benefit from the authors' casual, spot-on approach to doing what must be done in a world where you've been labeled as different.

Comprehensive and up-to-date revision
Pennington's first edition on diagnosing learning disorders was showing its age, yet still the best one-volume summary on the neuropsychological underpinnings of learning disorders.This is a thorough revision and update of that earlier work.My office has owned it for about a week and I am not yet finished, but can already see that it is a major update, equivalent to writing an entirely new book.

Like the first edition, this volume starts by offering a general neuropsychological breakdown of learning disorders and questions about subtype analysis.Where the first edition then described research evidence for five types of learning disorder, this edition covers eight.Each includes summaries of relevant and recent research substantiating the cognitive problems that undergird each of the types of learning disorder.Pennington describes his own program of research a good deal, which is natural, but also includes references to competing hypotheses, such as the generalized cerebellar skill-deficit hypothesis of the syndrome commonly known as dyslexia.

Good Resource
This book is a good addition to any educational professional library. I found it to be quite helpful with some of the students I currently have in my class and was reminded of modifications and accommodations I have made in the past with other students. Well worth the investment.

Great overview
This was a required text for a doctorate level class and covers information very thouroughly.Because of constant changes in the field, even this 2004 copy has some outdated information, but it acknowledges areas where change seems to be coming.This is the first time I had ordered one of my texts from Amazon and decided to do so due to the price.I have always been very pleased with deliveries that rarely take more than 3 days.I ordered this on January 19 during the last few minutes of being able to have it delivered by January 22.I did not receive it until January 29.The only time anything has taken more than 3 days was when I really counted on having it sooner.If you need it as a class text, you can save money--but allow yourself plenty of time. ... This is an excellent book for anyone who works with or around children with learning disabilities.It is complete in all areas. It gives techiniques and explainations for working with children wilth learning disabilites.

Poor Reduplication
I have made several purchases from Amazon during the past and have not had ANY problems (from other sellers).However, when I decided to purchase from Amazon directly, I am VERY DISAPPOINTED.As a matter of fact, disappointed twice.The first copy of this book was of very poor quality.The ink during the printing process was extremely low, the graphics are not clearly visible, the binding is misaligned from the spine of the book, it appears to be reduplicated and I thought it was going to be hardback for $97 and "new"!.So, I requested another one and one was reissued.If I did not know any better and did not still have the first copy, I would have thought that it was the same exact book.I will never choose to order directly from Amazon again, as in the past, I should have used another seller.I expected much more from Amazon, especially when ordering directly from them.

Very poor quality
I have only read the first two chapters and I feel that the text is straight forward and presented well.

However, when I pay almost $100 for a new book I expect it to look like a textbook.I am in a bind because I am currently taking a class for which I need this book, otherwise it would have gone straight back to amazon.This is not a hardcover book.It looks like a bootleg copy!The inside looks like a poor photocopy (black and white only).Some pages are hard to read and have copy lines.This is not what I expected from amazon at all.I have never been disappointed in the past, but I am with this purchase.I will purchase my textbooks from a different seller in the future.

Finally a book for NLD adults!
I'm 49 years old and never heard of NLD until my son (now 15) was identified with it 8 years ago.Through his journey I realized that I also have NLD.There are several great books for children and teens with NLD but this is the first book I've seen for adults with NLD.Wow, it's nice to finally have something to relate to!Admittedly I haven't finished the book yet but it's been wonderful so far. There's a section called "NLD Voices" in which individuals with NLD talk about their career history that really hit home!This is a great book for the older generation NLDers.

Best book found yet concerning this subject
As a mother looking for information on transitioning into adulthood, I found this book to be a wonderful resource. I first borrowed this book and kept referring back to it so I realized this was a keeper and needed in my library.Our son has even read some of the entries given by adults with nvld and aspergers.He gains from reading their experiences and allows him to think about career choices in a very constructive way.Love the book.(o:

Highly dissappointing
I was hoping for some insight to help my 13 year old make some choices as he enters high school.This book offered me nothing, other than to bring on anxiety because of all the negativity in it.It was full of just chapters of individual Aspie experiences, MOSTLY BAD experiences.Chapter after chapter would say the same thing: try to find what you are good at, then emphasize the positive and try to work around the negatives.

The book offered no real direction or help, just sob stories.

Well Written Tremendous Resource
This book is a very organized employment guide for people with Asperger Syndrome or Non Verbal Learning Disability (AS/NLD) and their friends. It would also be an excellent resource for Vocational Rehabilitation professionals, enabling them to understand these often misunderstood neurological disorders.

After retiring at 63 years of age from a career as an Electronic Engineer I did some research on my lifelong weaknesses. I discovered I had a Nonverbal Learning Disability (NLD) and ran across this book. Having NLD meant that although I was very good at challenging and creative tasks I couldn't easily do things that most people take for granted like folding paper. As one person quoted in the book says, "I am generally quicker than others catching up with all sorts of knowledge and skills that require analytical understanding but I need much more time to get used to different telephones or copiers and to know where to find what."

I wish I had access to this kind of book when I was working. I read it eagerly from cover to cover.

The book, written by someone with NLD, covers the gamut and includes descriptions of what AS and NLD is,biographies of actual people with NLD and AS including what jobs worked for them at what didn't, and information for the AS/NLD person on how to plan a career, how to look for a job and how to function on the job.

Included are lists of resources including organizations and websites.

The book would also be useful for employers who could benefit from the strengths of AS/NLD people and would be willing to accommodate for their small weaknesses. As stated in the book: "Projects that allow the employee to use his/her creativity and problem-solving skills are best. Employersshould value the individual's laser-like concentration ability and understand and respect these employees' work style."

Useful and Insightful
This book is very suitable for people with Asperger syndrome who are conducting their job search independently or semi-independently, and who are interested in finding a career, not just a job. The author herself has Non-Verbal Learning disorder, and a large part of the book is devoted to contributions from other people with Non-Verbal learning disorder or Asperger syndrome, describing their experiences of employment. The later chapters look in depth at the issues, and provide lots of information and advice on the application procedure and dealing with your employers. Interestingly, the author recommends non disclosure to employers, and instead suggests being honest about yourself and how you are without giving people labels.
